Echoes of Indiana Avenue

This week on Echoes of Indiana Avenue we'll celebrate the July birthday of Charles Tyler – an important avant-garde saxophonist known for his work in free jazz music. Tyler spent much of his childhood in Indianapolis. He attended Crispus Attucks High School, and studied music with the Indianapolis Junior Symphony Orchestra. During his historic career, Tyler performed with many of the greatest legends in jazz – including Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Wes Montgomery, Albert Ayler, Billy Bang, Steve Lacy, and others. We'll share an hour of classic music from Charles Tyler and speak with his cousin Gregg Bacon, who calls Tyler a mentor and inspiration.

William Parker has perhaps done more than any musician alive to spread understanding and support for open improvised music.  More than that, he is a bassist, bandleader, and conceptualist of the highest order.  The sheer volume of projects (including the upcoming Vision Festival) that he commits energy to is simply daunting and the list of noted improvisers he has played with is practically a who's who of the idiom.   So which of them are we going to focus on?  You'll have to tune in to find out but trust me: you are going to be a fly on the wall with William and me for some heavy, heavy business!   This Monday 6p to 9p NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD and wkcr.org.  Next week it goes up on the podcast on your favorite podcasting app or at mitchgoldman.podbean.com/   Photo credit: William Parker by Jimmy Katz, used by permission of William Parker, williamparker.net.   #WKCR #JazzAlternatives #WilliamParker #DeepFocus #MitchGoldman #JazzInterview #JazzPodcast #FreeJazz #JazzImprov #VisionFest

Laurie Towers is a bassist within New York City's “downtown” scene of free improv, new music and punk-laden experimentalism. Over the past twenty-five years she's brought her R&B-driven counterpoint and chops to venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, sharing the stage with an array of musicians in the nexus between rock, jazz and the avant garde. Towers also made her mark in the upstate artists' community of Woodstock NY where she was referred to as a “bass wizard” in a ‘Woodstock Times' review. As a member of the Red Microphone, she recorded with revolutionary poet Amina Baraka for the legendary ESP-Disk label. Also a successful business owner and host of her feminist radio show, Towers' tenacity and activism have guided her journey, offering a model of empowerment for women in the arts and more. Towers has also been a member of the Dissident Arts Orchestra from the start. Creating downtown-style improvised scores to silent films. On Halloween, the Orchestra crafted a unique soundtrack to the FW Murnau terror classic ‘Nosferatu' with Towers' pulsating, throbbing fretless bass offering the vampire a voice to be reckoned with. Capping off her rebel yell for women's rights, Laurie Towers created ‘She's Raising the Bar', a weekly podcast, in 2012. As its producer and co-host, she's engaged an array of woman actors, writers, vocalists and entrepreneurs and broadcasted her show live from the NYC Women's March, in the heat of battle. The bassist, composer and poet William Parker is the soul of the Lower East Side free jazz scene. A veteran of ensembles led by Cecil Taylor, Bill Dixon, Billy Bang and David S. Ware, Parker is also remarkable leader in his own right. In 2021 he released a ten-disc boxed set, The Music of William Parker: Migration of Silence into and out of the Tone World, Volumes 1-10, featuring compositions in a dizzying range of styles. With his wife and collaborator, the dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, Parker has turned the annual Vision Festival into one of the defining events in New York creative music. In our conversation, William spoke to me about his early years in the Bronx, how he rose up in the “Loft scene” of the 1970s, his experiences with Cecil Taylor, and his understanding of music as a force of revolutionary social transformation.Links and References:recordings in this episodeMigration of Silence into and out of the Tone WorldI Plan to Stay a Believer: The Inside Songs of Curtis MayfieldPiercing The VeilFarmers by Nature: Love and GhostsCecil Taylor Unit: The EighthBlue Lime Light: A Tribute to Cecil TaylorDavid S. F2K Ep. 24 William Parker Among the most prominent New Yorkers in the world of contemporary jazz and creative music, Parker first gained notice playing with the groundbreaking pianist Cecil Taylor in the 1980s and has gone of to release dozens of his own recordings on numerous labels internationally as well as on his on Centering label. Parker has worked extensively with many of the most-uncompromised talents of his time including David S. Ware, Matthew Shipp, Billy Bang, Charles Gayle and Jeanne Lee. For me, he is a favorite artist among musicians worker today with an endlessly searching quality that makes each of his many diverse releases a discovery. Much like his music, I was delighted to find the man to be of big ideas and goods humor and our time together seemed to go by much too soon. We discuss Parker's beginnings on the bass, his love of foreign films, The NYC "Loft Scene" of the 70s and 80s, "The Hallelujah Stage," his late collaborators Billy Bang & David S. Ware, his poetry and other writing, The Vision Festival and future projects. This conversation took place in May of 2014
