In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we're joined by Alison Kondler, an Audubon Master Birder—or as we like to call it, a certified bird guru. Alison wows us with her eerily accurate bird calls and shares her immense birding knowledge. We chat about the rarest birds you can spot in Colorado, the best apps for bird identification, why the American Ornithological Society (AOS) is renaming North American birds that are named after people, how to squirrel-proof your bird feeder, tips for turning your yard into a borderline bird sanctuary, and she finally settles the debate on whether birds are in fact government drones. If you're a bird lover—or even bird curious—this episode is for you. We wrap the show with a lively debate about whether thru-hiking belongs in the Olympics, the triple crown of underrated wildlife, a former guest obliterating the Arizona Trail FKT, and a generous dose of shameless self-promotion. Your support goes directly to creating future episodes and allows this podcast to be ad-free and 100% listener supported. Your kindness means the world to me and I hope you might feel inspired to explore the natural areas where you live.My recordings from the upper peninsula are not useable because some type of critter thought it would be fun to chew the microphone cable. I didn't notice until I got back to Traverse City, but I had to order a replacement cable. Of the 30 hours of recorded files, I could only salvage what you heard in the episode last week. As you know, I went to the eastern UP hoping to record wolves. The good? I found the wolves and tracked them for two days before setting up my recorders. The bad? They are very elusive and difficult to capture on “tape”. I have a few seconds of what might be a howl, but it is distant and could also be a Common Loon. Welcome to the 17th episode of the Nature is my Jam podcast! Because of some technical difficulties while I was in the upper peninsula, I had to dig into some older files for this week's episode. Not to fear, though. We are in Leelanau County again and we are going to be spoiled with a menagerie of bird calls recorded in an open meadow. How many birds make up a menagerie?? I don't know that answer but we have 10 birds for the price of admission. And not just any birds. We are talking Common Yellowthroats, Magnolia Warblers, Black-capped Chickadees, Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-shouldered Hawks, Blue Jays (song and calls!), Crows, and more. Northport is a tiny village near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula that has beautiful rolling hills, forests, farmland and perhaps my favorite, expansive open meadows that soak up the sun and play host to a who's who of Northern Michigan wildlife. This recording, as I mentioned above, is very much bird forward to the listening palate. As always, I welcome your thoughts and hope you enjoy this episode. In which the author talks about how to see. Ayurveda divides us into three phenotypes: vata, pitta and kapha. Vatas have acute hearing and enjoy the sense of touch— if my memory serves right. Pittas have acute vision and enjoy the sense of smell. Kaphas have acute taste and enjoy the sense of touch. As a classic vata, I have acute hearing, as a result of which I'm very sensitive to the sound of birds. As I write this, I hear three birds: a wagtail, a bulbul, and a parakeet. This can become a curse when I hear the sound of a bird that I cannot identify. I obsess about it and go to an app called "Bird Calls," that is loaded on my phone to try to figure it out. It has to do with a way of seeing that is cultivable but not necessarily common. If you have it; that's a gift. Some people can see owls just by walking past. The trick to quick identification is observing size and shape, colour patterns, behavior and habitat according to this website. I have still not cultivated this way of seeing yet. Mostly I stare at a tree where the bird-calls emanate from and wait for movement. I cannot drive by birds on telephone poles and quickly identify them. Where I score is with the sound. Once I hear and identify a bird by it call, I never forget it. Even now, I can wake up and listen to the trill of a Kingfisher calling at a distance and know that it is in my neighborhood. I know the rosy starlings who have migrated from Tajikistan by their excited cheep-cheeps; the bulbul, by its sweet piercing whistle that echoes around my building; and the wagtail by its loud call, unusual for a bird so small. My bird watching happens through the day. Usually, when I'm bored or have nothing to do, I pick up my binoculars and look out. Usually I see something. There was the time when it was raining. I trained my binoculars on a Ficus tree, and found a golden oriole perched on the top. It did the most amazing thing. It circled and went upside down on the branch, almost as if it wanted the rain to wet its underside. It had been a terribly hot day. As I stood in doors and watched the oriole enjoy the water drops, I felt like doing the same. In another branch, a black drongo (Dicurus macrocercus) sat perfectly sit, enduring the rain that was pouring on its black head. In the beginning, with blind ambition, I decided that I would memorize the Latin names for all the bird species that I saw. I have given up that endeavor now. It is complicated enough to keep track of the markings and learn the common names. This then is the other learning that will occur: spotting minor differences between birds that belong to the same species: white cheeked barbet, gray-headed barbet, coppersmith barbet, blue-throated barbet, you get the picture. They all belong to the Megalaima species. It doesn't come easy but I struggle at it anyways. Slowly and surely, like a tortoise, I'm climbing up the hill of taxonomy and nature watching.

If you're out walking in the morning, you'll notice a symphony of sound has arrived. It's well and truly spring, and the birds know it. But do you know how to identify the songs? Our birder Alain Clavette sure does.

Unlocked: Daily Devotions for Teens

I examined the scroll. The instructions were clear, but sometimes hard to interpret. I nodded my head confidently as I rolled up the scroll and stuffed it into my satchel. I would need to make my way through the Whispering Forest, cross Chelsey's Chasm on the second bridge, then travel through the Ash Trenches. Simple enough, but not easy. Still, my steps had a joyful bounce. I was glad the Son of the High King had periled through our country to clear a path for us. A friend from my village had given me the instructions spoken by the King Himself, and I had started the journey right away. “Be sure to follow the path exactly,” he had said. Then he whispered, “And beware the Prince of the Air.” All shuddered when speaking of the thief prince. I was deep in the forest when a raspy screech startled me. Crimson-beaked black birds crowed, “Away! Away!” I had to catch my beating heart. I suppose those birds had always been there, but I noticed them more now. I made it through the forest, the birds still following me, screeching, “Away! Away!” When I came to the first bridge, I was so relieved. I almost set foot on the bridge thinking, "A way across!" But then I laughed as I remembered I needed to cross on the second bridge. Once I found it, I crossed the chasm and started toward the Ash Trenches. This was the part I feared the most. “Away! Away!” The landscape became rocky and hazardous the closer I got to the trenches. “Away! Away!” Finally, I came to the first trench. Its walls were steep and jagged, and the birds were silent for the first time. "Away! Away!" I heard inside my head. I looked around the trench and saw the rocky plains. I started backing away from the trench. Maybe I was supposed to go away from here and instead go through the plains? I tripped on a rock and fell on my satchel. I remembered the scroll. I checked it quickly. “Yep. The way is through the trench.” Abigail Scibiur • Jesus faced every temptation we do, and He overcame them all (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus was the only one who could live without sinning, and He has compassion on us. Because of God's great love, He gave His life for us—dying on the cross and raising from the dead so that we could be totally forgiven and free from sin. He calls us to follow His good ways, but even when we do give in to temptation, Jesus extends His grace and mercy to us (1 John 2:1). When we are experiencing temptation, how might it be comforting to know that Jesus understands what we're going through and wants to help us? • We face various challenges that come in many forms on our journey with God. What specific tools has God given us to help us combat these challenges? (Ephesians2:1-10) • Throughout our lives, the enemy tries to lead us away from where God is leading us. But as we follow Jesus, He empowers us to overcome the pull of the enemy. Can you think of a time you didn't know what to do, but then something in the Bible helped you? • Many temptations are hard to spot in the moment. How does the Holy Spirit help us in these moments? (John 14:25-26) Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:7-8 (NIV)

I hope you all see the irony that for episode 69 we are talking about two of the weirdest and most promiscuous animals in the animal world: Bonobos and Ducks! With Spring Break upon us, why would anyone want to work, unless of course its for sex. That's right; we're talking about animal sex. So keep your kids at home as we adults dive on in to the group sex world of bonobos and the beautiful and at time terrifying love life of ducks As great apes, bonobos are probably the best at sex. If you will think of this troop of primates as a chill hippie commune. In order to solve problem and keep aggression from escalating their answer is sex. As for ducks there are many ways males try to attract the females so to win their favor. It comes down to three thing: a dance, a song and fancy feathers.  With every duck species with a different head and/or tail dance so to show off their beautiful plumage, as well as some calls; the female decides which one is the most beautiful. But what about the ones who don't get picked? Well let's just say they turn to the dark side and it has to do with their long and twirly penis. Those poor female ducks...well not really as their vaginal tract is just as weird, long and twirly.
