Paul Carlucci has published 3 short story collections and works as a copywriter, making other peoples work read better. He's just released one of the most hotly anticipated debuts of the year, it's called 'The Voyageur'.It tells the story of Alex, a motherless stockboy in 19th century Montreal, who is taken in by Serge, a drunken fur trader. After heading out on an expedition into the wilderness which goes awry, Alex must fend for himself at the mercy of stranger men, and a seemingly brilliant saviour in Dr Beaumount. We talk about the novel being inspired by real life, and how he blended fact with fiction. Also, you can hear about the switch from short stories to long form, and what he's learned from a day-job in copywriting. We chat through learning grammar and how that affects creative storytelling, and how much he worries about the formalities of writing when getting down prose. You can hear about his particular blend of plotting and pantsing, and why this project would be lost without his current publisher.Support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Judy has lived and worked in Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Greece, Mexico, and Venezuela; and speaks Spanish and Portuguese.Judy recently published "Death in Wartime China: A Daughter's Discovery" a book about her father's service in WWII. It is in that capacity that I had the pleasure of speaking with her. It was on a fateful day in 2016, a simple email from an interested stranger would uncover a world where her father continues to be revered as a hero. Judy would board a plane to Kunming, China, where her father is honored with a mountain memorial that heralds the bravery of a man who sacrificed his life to save his entire B 24 Liberator crew during the China Burma India conflict of World War Two. This journey would welcome her to the country as the daughter of an important hero and lead her to create the new book” death in wartime China, a daughter's discovery,”.Remember to subscribe, rate, and review Eyewitness History.Follow the Show on Social Media!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EyewitnessHistoryTwitter: https://twitter.com/EyewitnessPodThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5351305/advertisement
In the second part of their conversation, Patricia Evangelista discusses with Howie a thought-provoking aspect of her approach: unpacking the peculiar language used in the Philippines to cloak, justify and record violence by the state, from the origins of "salvage" to mean extrajudicial killing to the refrain of "nanlaban" (resisting arrest) to the clinical coldness of absurdly fantastical police reports. Evangelista did not come out of nowhere. Her book is part autobiographical, including her wunderkind years when she became a teen-age public speaking world champion. She talks about her famous grandfather, the journalist Mario Chanco, and the big reveal she makes about him in the book; and her turning point when she stopped being a carefree youth and began to care about the forced disappearances of other youths. She offers advice for would-be book writers ("if you're going to sit with a story for four or five years, you better very much care about it."), and for those who want to follow her path as a "trauma journalist." When interviewing victims, she instructs, "try to make it as easy as possible. We ask for facts, not for feelings. Hindi 'yung 'anong pakiramdam mo?'... I try to be as respectful as possible. Francis Spufford is a child of his times. He was raised on a university campus by “serious and convinced” churchgoing parents, in an era when Christianity was “taken for granted” as part of most people's ordinary lives. His teenage years began two decades in which God was absent. In his 30s, Spufford committed what he calls a “classic, destructive male mistake of midlife”. He politely declines to provide any further details other than explaining: “They are my shames, but other people's privacy is involved.” That the crisis somehow led him back to God is both a miracle and a testament to the creative ways that a creative God breaks through into our everyday, he says. In this in depth interview with Premier Christianity's Emma Fowle, Francis unpacks some of his books, including the "sweary" Unapologetic and talks about why Christian art is sometimes a little bit rubbish. You can also read this interview in Premier Christianity magazine.

Critically acclaimed author, Hilary Leichter, spoke to me about why she thinks of herself as a realist, how her life imitates art, finding a novel hidden in her closet, and her latest, TERRACE STORY. Hilary Leichter is an award-winning short story writer, and author of the novel Temporary, which was a finalist for The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and an NYPL Young Lions Fiction Prize, that was also longlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Award, was named a New York Times Editors' Choice as well as a Best Book of 2020 by NPR, Elle, Vulture, and Publishers Weekly. Her latest novel, Terrace Story (Ecco; on sale: August 29, 2023), is described as “... an intimate exploration of time, a fable about love,[and] an epic daydream for a broken-hearted world.” Booklist said of the book, “Terrace Story is fun and profound, fickle and erudite. It is an irresistibly cool book.” Hernan Diaz, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Trust, said of the author, ”Hilary Leichter, [is] one of our most original novelists, [and] amazes us again with a beautifully unclassifiable novel. Step out onto the terrace, where space and time, cause and effect, and fiction and reality have been redefined and gorgeously subverted. Terrace Story isn't a novel you merely read; it's a book you inhabit.” Hilary teaches at Columbia University where she is the Undergraduate Creative Writing Adviser in Fiction. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, n+1, The New York Times, Conjunctions, and elsewhere. Her work in Harper's Magazine won the 2021 National Magazine Award in Fiction. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Please welcome acclaimed Author & Memoirist Cathy Rentzenbrink to the 'Clearing'!You can also Watch/Listen to Cathy's wonderful episode here:https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/cathyrentzenbrinkCathy Rentzenbrink had just delivered the draft of her latest novel when this interview took place. So, naturally enough, she was reluctant to discuss it beyond saying it was two years in the writing and two decades in its creation. Cathy is happiest encouraging other writers to write, on the credible assumption that ‘writers are people for whom writing is more difficult.' Cathy herself is a fast reader and a slow writer, who spends lots of time considering what she can cut without loss from her first or later drafts. For her, as for most good writers, writing is rewriting.Paradoxically, at age 18, when her Irish father first met her English mother on the Quay in Falmouth, he could neither read nor write. Happily, he could both talk and sing and his words were an early inspiration for the young Cathy. In contrast, Cathy's loving mother was very literate, as well as a 'love at first sight' super romantic. Cathy says “all life is full of material” and the tragic material in Cathy's early life was the traffic accident that put her younger brother into hospital after being knocked down by a motorbike, which led to the family's agonising decision to turn off his life support system, 8 years later. In her early ‘career,' Cathy was happiest when she was working in Hatchard's bookshop. (It remains her scorched earth emergency option.) Cathy never wanted an office job where she might be expected to laugh at dodgy ‘jokes delivered by drunk men.'Instead, Cathy became a writer. And an encourager of other writers, at festivals and workshops. Meanwhile she has been married twice. She remains good friends with her first husband and supportive of her ‘current' husband, a Dutchman with a difficult name for strangers to spell. Her only criticism is of Mr Rentzenbrink's intolerance while driving, but allegedly this characteristic is present in all heterosexual male drivers and may perhaps be an essential element of the Patriarchy.Cathy's body of work now includes novels as well as autobiographical books and how to start writing guides. To quote Ovid, translated from the original Latin: “Be patient and tough. Some day this pain will be useful to you.”Cathy would like to be remembered as a Laugh rather than someone who's ‘had a big paper round.'The only award that Cathy's won so far was at 17 when she won the Snaith and District Ladies Darts Championship, with an additional award for including three treble twenties as a single score in that success. Cathy Rentzenbrink - one hundred and eighty!Cathy is 'passing the Golden Baton' on to fellow acclaimed Author, Kit De Wall. Critically acclaimed author, Andrew Lipstein, spoke to me about failure as an MFA, how he sold his first novel, why time spent not writing is also important, and his latest THE VEGAN. Andrew Lipstein is a Brooklyn-based writer who also works in finance and has a mathematics degree. His debut novel, Last Resort, was named a Top 10 Book of the Year by Slate, a 2022 Best Book by The New Yorker, a 2022 Best Book by Vulture, and a New York Times Editors' Choice. His latest, The Vegan is described as a book about “....high finance, moral reckonings, veganism … guilt, greed, and how far we'll go to be good.” It was named one of Town & Country's Must-Read Books of Summer, an i-D Magazine, ELLE, Literary Hub, and Our Culture Magazine's Most Anticipated Book of 2023. Author Andrew Martin called it, “Crime and Punishment for the Brooklyn brownstone set," and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joshua Cohen called it, “... a meaty comedy with a bleeding heart, highly recommended for all animals who read." In this file Andrew Lipstein and I discussed: Why he chose to use a pseudonym to sell his first book The moral ambiguities of money Why having a great editor feels like cheating What to do if you can't find the time to write Why all of our best ideas come to us in the shower And a lot more! There are times when going to the doctor will save your life. There are also times when going to the doctor will kill you because medical care is the third or fourth leading cause of death in America. - Glen MerzerMy very special guest for this episode is Glen Merzer, and I cannot wait for you to receive his empowering message around our personal health and the health and future of this planet. We begin with his backstory, which I find super interesting given that he was an award-winning playwright who ended up in Hollywood writing for network television including the show Blossom (which for me is quite nostalgic). We cover the deaths in his family that prompted him to become a vegetarian at an early age, and the discovery that paved the path to his passion for sustainability and improving the health of the Planet.Glen talks about his book, Own Your Health, and how he weaves in fun and fascinating stories from his personal life, including how his dad saved his mother's life by telling her to listen to Glen's advice about what to eat.We cover the climate crisis and Glen's book, Food is Climate, including the discrepancies between the story we've been told and the reality when it comes to both the causes and the solutions for the climate crisis. Glen says, “A lot of what the problem is arrogance” because we really “don't know how close we are to the tipping point.”We talk about how there's been a lot of ridicule about documentaries Cowspiracy because of the statistics cited. Glen brings clarity around accounting for the extreme discrepancies in statistics out there about how responsible animal agriculture is for climate chaos. And although it can be difficult to feel hopeful when there are so many unknowns and there are still so many people who seem ambivalent, Glen leads by example with his ability to stay positive and motivated to continue his work, even when progress appears slow.VIEW THE FULL SHOW NOTES AND GUEST BIO & LINKS HERE ---------------------------------------SPONSORED BY22REBOOT - The most comprehensive 22-day lifestyle transformation system designed for driven individuals and high-performing entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders who are making waves with their work, while neglecting the one asset they can't afford to lose… their health. Show Notes - Interview with Dr. Pamela Blair In today's podcast I interview the Reverend Dr. Pamela Blair, perhaps best known for the book she co-authored that was first published the year 2000 entitled “I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye: Surviving, Coping & Healing after the sudden death of a loved one.” Dr. Blair is a retired psychotherapist who specialized in working with individuals grieving the loss of a loved one especially after a sudden death. Although retired, Dr. Blair continues to lead grief support groups and write. In today's podcast interview she shares her personal grief story, highlights the impact her book “I was not ready to say goodbye” had on those she worked with and explores excerpts from her new book – The Long Grief Journey. Together we delve into the concept of long-term grief, ways to cope with continued loss that occur throughout the grief continuum, how to experience happiness within the context of grief and the notion of holding hope during grief. Key Points: Pamela's book, I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye, has been the most consistent resource I recommend to any client who has recently experienced a sudden or unexpected death. This book is a comprehensive guide for individuals and families who are living with a sudden death and provides information on different types of loss, for different family members at different points of time. The Long Grief Journey by Pamela Blair and Bradie McCabe is an excellent resource that covers so many of the challenges long-term grievers encounters and provides exercises you use to work through many of the areas where you may be feeling stuck. Pamela discusses hope when it comes to grief. So many people have trouble finding hope again after a sudden death. She talks about finding hope in the support you get from family, friends, or support group members and about finding hope in new growth in nature. Her thoughts brought me back to the interview I had with Kim Cantin, who described finding happiness in new, simpler things in life, mainly with connections to people where she experienced joy in their presence. I encourage those of you struggling to find hope in your life right now after the devastating sudden loss of a loved one to examine how you are defining hope. Perhaps you are still using definitions of hope from the life you lived prior to your unexpected death. It may be time to redefine your concept of “hope” in a way that matches your current experiences. If you want an opportunity to connect with Dr. Pamela Blair, please join our Facebook group “Talking about the Podcast Untethered with Dr. Levin.” The Facebook group for this week's podcast also contains the reference for the book on continuing bonds discussed in this podcast by Dr. Denis Klass as well Dr. Blair's website and information about her new book – The Long Grief Journey. Critically acclaimed debut crime novelist and poet, Margot Douaihy, spoke with me about what she learned from Gillian Flynn, subverting the hard-boiled mystery, and writing a queer, iconoclastic, chain-smoking, punk rock nun, for her latest SCORCHED GRACE. Cynthia James is a risk taker at heart. When she was younger she was preoccupied with surviving. But little by little, she moved from welfare to possibilities in part, because of her grandma's wisdom. She kept planting seeds, encouraging Cynthia to think bigger. And she went from being a flight attendant to Miss Minnesota, then becoming an actor and a singer! There are a lot of good nuggets in our conversation. Mainly, Cynthia thinks it's important to know: what's lights you up? And to ask yourself: what would you do for free? My favorite thing she said was: fear is nothing but energy and info. We're always evolving and growing. There will be fear, but it's normal and it's just energy. Use it to your advantage. And stay away from the people telling you that you can't. Keep your mind on the CAN. More about Cynthia: It took Cynthia James many decades to find her authentic voice; today, she supports clients around the world to do the same.
