The Rolling Stones were back in 1981 with a brand new album --- except this was unlike any "Brand New Album" they'd ever released as a band, since almost none of it was actually brand new. Instead, the Stones and their engineering team combed the vaults and found a bunch of half-finished tracks, put lyrics and modern production on them, and released them to the public. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?Except it was great. Tattoo You is broadly viewed as the last truly awesome Rolling Stones album, and time has arguably been kinder to it than even the initial reviews were. Similar to mix of rock, balladry, and groove that they perfected on Some Girls, this mix of songs sounds surprisingly coherent, despite most of them not coming from the same recording session (or even the same group of musicians, in many cases). We go track-by-track through the grooves on this album, from the archetypal riffage of Start Me Up all the way to the dreamy songscaping of Waiting on a Friend.

March 24, 2016 Welcome back to World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan in Portland for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. We took a couple weeks off while I had some R&R. I’m OMN’s Tom D’Antoni. I’ve been looking forward to sitting down and talking with Curtis Salgado around the time his new album The Beautiful Lowdown is coming out. It’s always fun to talk with Curtis, he’s a brilliant guy, a great singer, and the world has been waiting for his follow up to Soul Shot his last album. He and I have very similar taste when it comes to music, he returned an Otis Blackwell LP that I had loaned him about three years ago. He could have kept it longer,I knew it was I good hands. I had just handed him the new album, which he had never seen in it's final form ;and we just jumped on in from there.

Anthony and Will have their third "self-indulgent" episode where they basically interview themselves, although they brought in returning all-star guest Neil Casey. And they have gathered to discuss their mutual obsession, the 1990 They Might Be Giants album "Flood." What is the appeal of these now 25-year-old quirky jittery melodies with obtuse lyrics? How did they all come to discover this band? How did Will come to have a ring tone recorded by the band? All this and other things a lot like this revealed in this ep!
Returning champion guest Cole Johnston (@KeyboardCole) is back and we officially announce his new position as the official replacement Based on Nothing cohost! This show just isn’t as good with one host and it’s time to fix it. Cole and I open up some new and old segments such as Where’s The Brand New Album?, In The Loop, Great Stories, Bedtime Stories, and Tired of Weezer. We talk about adult playgrounds, institute a failed no cursing policy, Fantastic Four, Saved By The Bell, Star Wars lullabies, a comedy show we went to, we take a call from a friend of the show and much more. Finally, Cole dramatically quits his new position as the official replacement Based on Nothing cohost and gets permanently banned from the show. It’s a real roller coaster of an episode. Episode #50 is next! Thanks for listening!
In this very special episode of the Based on Nothing podcast I am joined in studio by repeat guest and friend of the show Kelsey Degnan. Near the end of the episode I realized that I have been doing this podcast for over a year and it becomes a joyous and celebratory affair. The episode begins with a prayer and a state of the podcast address. We take LIVE calls from Karl Germanovich from the band Howlish, New York based comedian Alisha Delp, (who is coming to us live from a life or death battle with a mosquito) Michael Morrison, (who has scorching hot takes on Mad Men and Taylor Swift) and Rob Moden (host of the Orphan Black Clone Cast on the Nerdist network!) Kelsey and I discuss Brand New and how she recently confronted part of the band Seether over their blatant rip off of the Brand New song ‘Daisy’, a lost episode of the Based on Nothing spinoff Where’s The Brand New Album? podcast, summer music like Hop Along and their wonderful new record, American Football, Yuck, Mikal Cronin, Rilo Kiley, Colleen Green, summer vacations, Disney World wishes and curses, Podcastaway the movie, the great Dancing Epidemic of 1518 which is my favorite thing to ever be talked about on this podcast, and finally we go through the new Brand New news. Sorry for the little popping sounds, but also fuck it. Thank you to everyone who has been on or listened to this podcast over the past year. New episodes coming all through June/all summer/until the end of time.
The podcast no one asked for is back to ask the question that haunts us more than any other - Where is Brand New's brand new album? It seems closer than ever with the band paying new material live, releasing their old demos on cassette and sending out The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me lyric books almost nine years after the fact. Brand New are giving their fans more intrigue than ever lately and it seems like something is right around the corner.Friend of the show and Brand New scholar Crit, who has seen Brand New live 34 times, joins us.
It's the season finale of Where's the Brand New Album? and Jacob and Spenser are ready to put the podcast to Bed before its Glory Fades (or until Brand New starts releasing actual news for a change). They Won't Know whenever the next episode returns, but they are caught in Handcuffs to provide the best possible answer to that age-old question, "Just where is that Brand New album?" The two hosts invite Brand New scholar Luke Thornton to discuss the band's legacy and meaning to everyone who enjoys them, along with playing a Mix Tape full of games and odd bits. Officially surpassing Brand New's discography count (if we're included a new, fifth album soon), Where's the Brand New Album? enters its six episode with Layne Montgomery! Co-hosts Spenser and Jacob discuss the band's genre-defining albums, certain songs, and where the band comes from with Layne -- an avid music fan who has never heard a single song from Brand New. They all also realize how many songs of Brand New feature piano. Remember to subscribe to us on iTunes and email us at info@basedonnothing.net! The season finale of Where's the Brand New Album? is next episode so feel free to email us anything. ANYTHING. We will read it on air.
The fifth episode of Where's the Brand New Album finally conquers the c-c-c-controversial Brand New record, Daisy. Jacob and Spenser (and special guest Mal!) try to put a fire out with gasoline as they unravel just why Daisy gets so much hate to begin with. Topics include Brand New's live shows, the one dollar conspiracy, and much more! You can find Mal over at @malive and don't forget to contact us at info@basedonnothing.net, and follow us over at @brandnewpodcast
Here to talk about Brand New's monumental album, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me, are Spenser and Jacob in the fourth episode of Where's the Brand New Album? They, accompanied by the great Isaac Leggett, discuss Modest Mouse, Say Anything, whether or not lambs are really innocent, and the usual Brand New-discussion that obviously makes this podcast this podcast. Remember to subscribe to us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter, and email us over at info@basedonnothing.net!
It's been two weeks since the last episode and Where's the Brand New Album? is slowing down discussion about a specific record from Brand New and just talking about the band themselves. This episode plays around with format -- two guests! three segments! -- in which conversation goes as far as the band's silent presence, those mysterious demos, the music scene in general, Kevin Devine, and the extremely popular Layne Montgomery. Andrew Gelburd and Matthew Ryan join in for "Fighting Off Your Deja Devil Demons."Don't forget to subscribe to us on iTunes, follow us on Twitter, and email us at info@basedonothing.net!
It's the second episode of the only podcast that asks the age-old question, "Where's the Brand New Album?" and in this episode they discuss Brand New's sophomore record, Deja Entendu. With guest Drew Beringer (AbsolutePunk.net), Spenser and Jacob go through the monumental album track-by-track, talk about the band's social media presence (or lack thereof), Spider-Man, Dashboard Confessional, and Matthew McConaughey. You can find more of Drew over at his Twitter, @drewberinger, and you can follow us on Twitter too! @brandnewpodcast. Be sure to subscribe to us on iTunes.
The time has come for another podcast where we talk about a band's discography, and that band is Brand New. Where's The Brand New Album? asks the age-old question, "where's that goddamn brand new album from the band Brand New?" In this episode, Spenser and Jacob pose the question, can't find the answer, and so they discuss Brand New's debut album, Your Favorite Weapon. In depth conversation gets crazy when they talk about each track individually, national tragedies, and, for some reason, Dashboard Confessional. This is just the beginning of this podcast so subscribe to us on iTunes, write to us at info@basedonnothing.net, and follow us on Twitter (@brandnewpodcast)!
