Law Enforcement Life Coach / Sometimes Heroes Need Help Podcast
Welcome back to another impactful season of the "Sometimes Heroes Need Help" Podcast. We are starting this year off with an amazing , impactful, dedicated 33 year law enforcement veteran, Doug Shoemaker. Doug has held many high ranking assignments making his way from patrol officer to chief in several jurisdictions. Doug and is currently working in the private sector, bringing his years of experience to industries that serve the law enforcement profession. I had a really great conversation with Doug about leadership, culture, and the role each of us plays in bringing about the change we desire. Sit back and give it a listen and come away a better version of you for doing so!More About Doug:I believe passionately in policing. Those who answer the call to serve are the ones who we look to not just to be the bedrock of policing now, but the ones who will ultimately create a better future for us and for our communities. I began my career in Jefferson City, Missouri, and spent nearly 27 years serving residents of the state capitol. I spent years developing and prioritizing community partnerships, which ultimately became a pivotal piece of managing the "Journey for Justice," a march held in the wake of the Ferguson protests in 2014. Working closely with the local NAACP chapter, the department and the community began to come together, rather than remain divided to begin to build more meaningful solutions for all. I served as the Chief of Police in Grand Junction, Colorado for over four and one half years and then served the people of Denton Texas as their chief of police. The women and men I've had the good fortune to work with are passionate about policing, much like those in police agencies across the world. I've most recently retired fully from policing, and while I will miss it, I'm proud of what I accomplished during my time on the job.I have had some incredible opportunities working with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, beginning back in 2007 and through today. I've served on several committees and sections, and in 2018 was elected to serve a two-year term as the Vice Chair of the Public Information Officers Section. I was honored to be elected as the IACP's 5th Vice President in September of 2021 and during my work as a Vice President I had the opportunity to lead several national and international efforts on culture within policing agencies.Outside of IACP, I'm also a member of the Texas Police Chiefs Association (TPCA), NAWLEE, IAWP, and NOBLE.I am very proud to be a founding board member of The Curve, an effort founded and led by renowned author and speaker Simon Sinek. Our work at The Curve aims to change the way we address culture within policing organizations - particularly at the leadership level.I begin my new journey as a Public Safety Executive with Peregrine in August of 2024, and I can't express how excited I am by the opportunity to be a part of a company that is forward thinking, genuinely values it members and clients, and looks to the future as an incredible opportunity to work with public safety agencies to provide solutions to challenges they face within their communities.- I look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals who want better public safety Thank you for taking the time to give this podcast a listen. In the final episode of our Case Studies season, Just Science sat down with Ashleigh Berg, Senior Forensic Investigator for the Denton County Sheriff's Office, to discuss a capital murder case, where a combination of a variety of forensic evidence types aided the resolution of the case. When a homicide occurs in a dynamic environment, like inside a moving vehicle that was involved in two car crashes, it can pose challenges for reconstructing the timeline of events and differentiating incident-related evidence from post-incident artifacts. For a fatal shooting case that took place in Denton, Texas, forensic practitioners needed to utilize a wide range of forensic evidence, such as bloodstain patterns, surveillance footage, and real-time tracking data, to help locate the suspect and provide insight to the investigative questions in the case. Listen along as Ashleigh describes her role in collecting and analyzing evidence in this capital murder case, the importance of considering all evidence and forensic findings in the context of a case, and how a combination of physical and digital evidence was crucial in bringing this case to justice. This episode is funded by the National Institute of Justice's Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (Award No. 15PNIJ-21-GK-02192-MUMU).

Send us a textTonight, we discuss the murder of Viki Lozano at the hands of her husband, Bobby Lozano. Bobby was a Denton police officer in 2002 when he found his wife lying on their bed with a gunshot wound to the chest. He tells his fellow officers, the Texas Rangers, and his family, that what happened to Viki was probably an accident. Because of favoritism, inaccuracies, and possible perjury, Bobby was released and not charged with Viki's death. Things changed six years later when Bobby was rearrested, and charged with the murder of his wife. Magic Mind is how we start our day! During this episode, Dr. Wayne “Mike” Hall discusses his latest capstone book: the Moral Imperative of Our Time-Purposeful Intellectual Growth. Satisfying these callings is the moral imperative. Mike also discusses other important themes such as: will, incorporating information and cognition as warfighting domains, how to think in today's fight, non-linearity and complex systems, anticipation compared to prediction, and the importance of initial conditions, and unity of effort. Troy and Spencer talk about three urban legends that may give you the spooks! La llorona is known in many parts of the world but most famously comes from Central and South America. Night Marchers are rumored to be fallen soldiers in Hawaii that protect the island but some believe they may have more dark intentions for those that encounter them. Goatman's Bridge in Denton Texas is known to be a place where dark spirits reside due to the tragedy that happened there in the late 1930's. Spencer and Troy also do a classic Thought Dawgs Draft. House shows in Denton Texas, hard hangovers, and not being able to see out of the right side of a van. Ariel Hartley (Pearl Earl) Pearl Earl “IT'S DREAD” album: https://pearlearl.bandcamp.com/album/its-dread “Pearl Earl is an all-female rock band from Denton, Texas made up of Ariel Hartley, Bailey K Chapman, Stefanie Lazcano and Chelsey Danielle. The band was founded Summer 2014 by Hartley, Chapman, and Lazcano and quickly became more than just a drunken jam party. The band almost immediately began touring nationally and regionally and in 2015 released their debut EP titled Karaoke Superstar. Pearl Earl shows began to attract music lovers of all persuasions, and they gained traction in DFW with airplay, and event regional awards. Pearl Earl's sound is a psychedelic cornucopia of the glitter and sparkle of glam rock, the space and cosmic intervention of prog, the angst and grit of punk, and the synth pop of the times of neon jumpsuits and disco balls. The band's debut full length and self titled album was recorded in Dallas at Elmwood Recording by Alex Bhore and Brack Cantrell. Mastering was handled by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters. Hartley, Chapman, and Lazcano began recording the album in August 2016, with Danielle joining the band after its completion. Hartley is the key songwriter of the evolving project with each song coming into its own with the rest of the band. The songs on the album are each their own animal; where “Star in the Sky” dives into an epic ode to prog rock with accenting flutes and space soundtrack synths, “Take A Shot” explores a tongue and cheek almost doo-wop, organ ornamented pop song with a double entendre. The psychedelic spaghetti western style and funk in “Captain Howdy” will dance you into confusion when the time signature and key change takes a twist; and “I Know” will leave you feeling soft and somber for the album's finale. The lyrical content ranges from whimsical characters to introspection and moving forward to internal anxiety about the state of America. With influences from many eras of music, Pearl Earl has the power to transmit you to the past and the future and back again.” Excerpt from https://livesessions.npr.org/artists/pearl-earl#:~:text=Pearl%20Earl%20is%20an%20all,just%20a%20drunken%20jam%20party. Whether they're just starting out or they're big stars, like Leon Russell, it's a place to see live music almost nightly in Denton, Texas.
My conversation with Mario was pretty enlightening. It reminds me of when I was younger and all I had to do is cook. No real responsibilities other than having fun, learning, and growing. My path was much more self-destructive early on mainly because I did not have anyone to kick me in the ass when I got off course. I worked my ass off and partied just as hard. When I was at work though it was all about work. I took the shit seriously as I knew it was my path in life and I was having fun doing it. I have no regrets as every decision made in my past has put me where I am today. Life is good now, but it sure as hell wasn't easy for a long time. For Mario - his journey has been full of challenges because he put them there. Not roadblocks but opportunities to learn, grow and find his place in the culinary world. He first cut his teeth at Bar Boulud and is now cooking at a 3 Michelin star restaurant. 5 years before that he was at a gastropub in Denton Texas. Goals kept his mind focused while he continues to learn. Mentors, Accountability Partners, Find a mentor or at the very least a battle buddy to help check you back into place. When finding someone to hold you accountable make sure they are not your drinking buddy as well. It will not help either of you if you are on the same path. Tell your chef and sous as well - let them know whats going on and your intentions, let them help challenge you as well. Trust me, they will see that as a new level of commitment from you and will start holding you to a higher standard. Goals! Where will you be in 5 years? 10 years? Honestly - no idea and any answer you have is nothing more than wild hair. Truth is, as you learn and grow new doors open. Doors you never knew existed are now opportunities that will change the path you thought was what you wanted. Start setting simple short term goals now as well as goals every years. The short term goals should be very attainable like reading a cookbook every month, having your mise ready to go 15 minutes faster, consistently, at the end of 30 days… Goals that are more about making you smarter, faster, stronger are the best short term goals. 1 year goals should be lofty and different than your short term… If you read a book a month than a 1 year goal to read 12 books is just cheating yourself. Do not short change yourself, be real but challenge yourself. If you are a line cook the likelihood of you taking over and being the exec. Chef by the end of the year probably isn't going to happen.Tools of the Trade5” Small Offset Spatula/Turner at JB PrinceSlotted Fish Spatula - I use this one for everything myselfCake Tester - For testing doneness and texture for everything but cakesBooks DiscussedThe Flavor Bible Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris Legal Shit:To help pay for the costs of running this podcast we use affiliate links from which we earn a commission from your purchase at no additional cost to you.Riverside.FMRecorded using Riverside.FM - The best solution I have found for recording my podcast. If you are listening to this episode you've taken a sharp left turn into GIRLS NIGHT. Join Icequeen, Mic, Tressa, Kara, and our special Guest Eva to talk about her #HometownHorror the Goatman's Bridge of Denton Texas! They discuss the story (and theories) behind this very special bridge, while discussing some other hometown horror. Including a (very possibly fake) story about a lady cannibal who ate the homeless in her funeral home. Is a real story better than a made up one? You decide! Find out about one of Mics very first ghost hunts when she was on the High school soccer team as an added bonus. We also end up at an intersection of talking about Lollapalooza, and Icequeen's coworker and his atrocities committed against communal workplace desserts.

Media freak-out over the mythical center fall out of our politics. No longer neocon vs. neoliberal. Sanders Applauds Denton, Texas for Passing 100th Local Resolution Backing Medicare for All: “The way we will pass Medicare for All,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, “is by continuing to build a strong grassroots movement that is prepared to take on the big money interests.” The city council of Denton, Texas passed a resolution Tuesday endorsing federal Medicare for All legislation, the 100th local government to do so as millions across the United face rising insurance premiums, skyrocketing drug costs, and imminent loss of coverage. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/politicsdoneright/support
