Today's Show we have a quadruple dose of “5 Questions With…” as I bring back my 5 guests and 4 interviews from last week to get on the hot seat with five more silly and fun questions for my wonderful friends. First up is James ‘Duke' Mason, Duke is a huge advocate and activist for lgbtq rights, democracy as a political insider, and a great journalist with a substack newsletter on important issues of the day. Coming back soon is his Duke Downloads, which are great interviews with news makers, celebrities and personalities of interest to our lgbtq community. Next up are the handsome, engaged couple from the current season 35 of The Amazing Race. Joe Moskowitz and Ian Todd were already extreme travelers and adventure guys, and they make the perfect couple as they travel the globe with other racers this season. Both are also very successful in business and are smart, fun and it was so great getting to know both of them. Third on the hot seat is the very handsome and multi-talented Stewart Taylor. Stewart is an actor, singer, songwriter, dancer and model who moved from the East Coast to make his mark in entertainment in Los Angeles, and whose boyfriend he left behind to pursue those dreams, gave Stewart the idea of his newest hit song, “Favorite Ex.” I always love talking to Stewart who has worked with some of the biggest names in music and continues to impress me with his talent. Finally up is one of my favorite returning guests, Brandon Stansell has a new song out also based on love, his boyfriend whom he had to take his time courting before wondering what it would take to make it official. Brandon has a million dollar smile and wears his heart on his sleeve in both his music and emotions. Be sure to listen to his newest single, “That's What I Feel About You.” Be sure to check out my guest's Website at: jamesdukemason.substack.com stewarttaylorofficial.com and brandonstansell.com. Today's Show we have one of my favorite musical guests back. Brandon Stansell writes songs from the heart, sings from his soul and is just a great guy chat with. He is country, out, proud and an amazing singer. This is Brandon's third visit to the Left of Str8 Show and I'm always happy when we have a chance to catch up. After a successful fall tour last year, his newest single drops the day this interview drops and talks about falling in love at first sight and the apprehension and love that goes with it. We have a great chat about the love that inspired the song, a low turnout on tour that led to one of his favorite nights and so much more. Sit back, have a cocktail and listen to my great chat with Brandon Stansell. Dennis is joined via Zoom by singer-songwriter Brandon Stansell to talk about his latest album This Must Be the Place, his upcoming show at Hotel Café in Los Angeles on April 6 and shares the stories behind his songs “Pick Up Where We Left Off,” “Good At the Time” and “Did You Settle Down Too Soon.” He also talks about the reaction to his 2020 documentary Three Cords and a Lie, about the strained relationship he's had with his family and hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee since he came out in his early 20's. He also recalls being a dancer on Taylor Swift's Fearless tour around the same time he came out, his favorite T Swift tune and the sweet note Taylor wrote to him. Other topics include: why he loves CrossFit, having lunch with Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks at their compound, why Amy Grant is everything, why he loves Los Angeles, working at Opryland from age 6 to 12, saying hell no to conversion therapy and that time Halle Berry came to one of his shows. @brandonstansell on Instagram https://www.brandonstansell.com/
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ginger Ming over Zoom video.Drag Race and singer/songwriter Ginger Minj returns to the big screen in the new Disney+ film, Hocus Pocus 2. We had the pleasure of interviewing Brandon Stansell over Zoom video.Seven years after the release of his debut single, singer/songwriter Brandon Stansell has come to occupy a unique niche within country music. He has been an ardent advocate for the queer community and the advancement of LGBTQ artists in the still widley conservative genre. In 2018, Brandon's music video for his single “Hometown” was the first LGBTQ-themed video to ever premiere on CMT. It was also named one of Rolling Stone's 10 Best Country Videos of the Year. In 2020, he released Hurt People (the title track featuring Cam) - a heartbreaking EP about his own family's response to his coming out.The EP also served as the soundtrack to his documentary, Three Chords And A Lie, where the Tennessee-born artist lays bare his struggles with his Southern Baptist family as he prepares for his first hometown show. The documentary was produced by OutTV and Leslie Jordan and premiered at OutFest in Los Angeles in August 2020.Brandon's newest project, This Must Be The Place, released September 2021 via PEG Records and Warner Music Group/ADA is an amalgam of the tear-inducing country music of his previous efforts and a compelling pop vibrancy of hope. This Must Be The Place, the LP, which includes the original six tracks plus four additional tracks was released June, 24 2022.We want to hear from you! Super special episode of the STP Podcast featuring Brandon Stansell! Brandon is an openly gay country music singer/songwriter/artist! He has a really incredible story and is passionate about being a source of hope and inspiration for people that are in similar situations as him. He recently was part of a super powerful documentary called, "Three Cords and a Lie" that documents his life and tells the story of coming out in a Southern Baptist Christian household. It's a gut-wrenching story that way too many people experience. Brandon is definitely a light and a great example of all things STP. His music is amazing and he is doing so much for the LGBTQIA+ community. He supports organizations like Launch Pad that support kids that are displaced for coming out. Amazing story, amazing conversation! Thank you for the work you do Brandon! Be sure to check out his new EP, This Must Be the Place on all of your favorite streaming platforms! Listen here on Spotify
On the 24th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, the pianist talks with country artist Branson Stansell about his documentary Three Chords & A Lie. Country music says all you need for a good country song is three chords and the truth, well that is, unless you’re hiding the truth from your conservative religious family and friends. Brandon discusses with Paul his heartbreaking journey growing up in a small town in Tennessee and being rejected by those he trusted most because of his sexuality. His journey began as an Opryland child entertainer where he met stars like Faith Hill to growing up and having the first music video on CMT showing a homosexual relationship. Discussed is the song “Hurt People” about generational differences between us and our parents. We get therapy and most of their generation were raised not to talk about it. Brandon is breaking down walls that his mentor and friend Grammy nominated country artist Ty Herndon helped pave the way for. When CMT premiered the video for Brandon’s single HOMETOWN in November 2018, he instantly became what they called,“living history.” The premiere of this video, addressing LGBTQ themes, was a first for the home of Country Music videos. The video then went on to be named one of Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Country Music Videos of 2018.” "Country music may not be known for being inclusive to LGBTQ artists, but rising musician Brandon Stansell is redefining the genre one soulful song at a time, “ says Billboard. His is a bold new voice in the genre, as comfortable making you tap your foot as shed a tear - a singer songwriter with something to say, and a voice to remember. All Heart with Paul Cardall is proudly a part of the American Songwriter Podcast Network. Brandon grew up in and around Nashville, born with Country Music in his veins, but it wasn’t until after transplanting to L.A. that he started developing his own brand of 'California Country.' Tapping his Tennessee roots with the fresh air sound of his West Coast home, Brandon released his first full-length album Slow Down in October 2017. His is a bold new voice in the genre, as comfortable making you tap your foot as shed a tear - a singer songwriter with something to say, and a voice to remember. Ty Herndon the award winning country singer talks about the 2019 Concert for Love & Acceptance at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on June 6th with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The 5th annual concert takes place during the legendary Country Music Association Festival and will be hosted by Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning artist Herndon and CMT’s Cody Alan. The concert features a coalition of artists and celebrities appearing and performing to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people. Herndon co-founded the concert with GLAAD the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization in 2015 and will also perform along with Antigone Rising, Daughtry, Harper Grae, Tayla Lynn, Brody Ray, Brandon Stansell, Rita Wilson, Chely Wright, Tyler Rich, Lee Brice, Mickey Guyton and more. Anita Cochran is returning as a performer and musical director for the show. We talked to Ty about his inspiration for The Concert for Love & Acceptance and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked as we approach the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall how he sees our LGBTQ community moving forward in this Trump administration Herndon stated, “You know that’s a big question. In this administration today I know there have been many challenges. I pretty much try to focus my attention on the kids and where we are in the South. We have seen the suicide rate go down but there’s so much work to be done educating not only the kids but educating the parents out there that don’t want to lose their kids. When I first started doing this even in a political environment it was hard to get people to listen to me. You’d go ‘Hey, do you know how may LGBTQ suicides you had in your state alone this last year?’ I had a number of people go, that’s not correct and I’m like no go look it up, it is correct. So when it comes to having power at all, it comes to the children...” Ty Herndon’s career spans two decades with 20 Billboard charted singles and 5 million albums sold. He continuously performs shows and maintains a heavy appearance schedule proving Herndon as unstoppable. In 2014 Ty was the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay. Shortly after he made history when he hosted the first country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance. The event is designed to bring attention and support to at-risk youth. Since the launch of the event Herndon has partnered with GLAAD to produce the event each year using his celebrity influence for the better good. GLAAD announced that a grant named after Herndon was being offered to support young people for their commitment to enhancing LGBTQ inclusion and representation in music. The recipient of the Ty Herndon Rising Stars Grant receives $2,500 to further fund their work and initiatives. We’ll be covering the 2019 Concert for Love & Acceptance that takes place at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on June 6th.For More Info & Tix: glaad.org LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES
Zeke Stokes, GLAAD Chief Programs Officer talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about GLAAD + Ty Herndon’s The Concert for Love & Acceptance at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on June 6th. The concert features a coalition of artists and celebrities appearing and performing to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people. The 5th annual concert will take place during the legendary Country Music Association Festival and will be hosted by Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning artist Ty Herndon and CMT’s Cody Alan. We talked to Zeke who is also the Executive Producer of The Concert for Love & Acceptance about the inspiration for this amazing concert and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what he would like to accomplish with this event Stokes stated, “This is really important because it allows us to reach into the fan base of the country music community which is an enormous fan base. It’s the most popular format of music in the country behind R&B and so reaching country fans at a place they can be at each year at the Country Music Association Festival in Nashville to shine a light on stories of acceptance and LGBTQ equality is super important. A lot of people across this country haven’t made up their minds yet how they feel about LGBTQ equality and may be with us on marriage equality but they may not understand the transgender experience just yet. We’re bringing all those a message to the fan base because we want them to see what we know which is that if you’re not loving and accepting LGBTQ friends, family, community, church members, the people at work then you’re living in the past and not in the future and that’s where we’re trying to go.” Zeke Stokes joined GLAAD as Vice President of Programs in 2014 and as Chief Programs Officer he oversees GLAAD's advocacy work to advance the stories of LGBTQ people that lead to positive cultural change in the United States and abroad. He leads a staff of media professionals in both Los Angeles and New York City charged with executing GLAAD's campaigns and initiatives in entertainment, news, youth engagement, Spanish language, transgender representation and more. GLAAD is the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization tackling tough issues to shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change and accelerating acceptance for our LGBTQ community. For More Info & Tix: glaad.org LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

We all want to be seen. We all want to be loved. We all want to be connected. And when we don’t feel seen, we forget to see ourselves for who we are and be content with that. Yet, sometimes we need little reminders along the way, and a few good people to nudge us…

BRANDON STANSELL is a fresh face onto the Country Music scene, but has always been nearby; honing his craft and finding his voice. SLOW DOWN, his latest EP and the title of his upcoming full-length album, is the epicenter of his “California Country” sound. While the sounds of this country crooner are appealing, there is more that meets the eye with this singer of Nashville roots. He is navigating the path of an openly-gay Country Artist. Brandon, while not the first to chart these waters, is one of few people in the industry willing to lay everything out for the listener and the result is an honest, beautiful musical experience. The video for Brandon’s most recent single, Spare Change, premiered on the Huffington Post earlier this month in tandem with the launch of his Kickstarter campaign to help fund his first full-length record. I arrived in Spokane Valley in 1975, at six weeks old. My large, loving, mixed-race family experienced its share of ups and downs and taught me the value of character, compassion, and community. My parents always worked for social justice, as youth leaders, social workers, public defenders, and activists, teaching their six children that we must use our gifts to help others. My first foray into politics came as a child, after my father was fired from his job simply because he was gay and my mother struggled to support the family as a single mother of six. My family experienced poverty, as well as discrimination based on race, gender, and sexual orientation. I helped my dad fight for a law to make discrimination against gay people illegal in the 1980’s. While that effort failed, neither I, nor my dad, would stop fighting for what’s right, because we knew it would happen one day. But I also experienced the incredible power of community support, and people looking out for me. I had the privilege of receiving scholarships to attend wonderful schools, such as Saint George’s School in Spokane. I recognized what an extraordinary opportunity this was and worked as hard as I could. I graduated in 1993 as valedictorian and was accepted into Yale University, where I earned a degree in clinical child psychology. Most importantly, I met my wife Amy on our second day on campus. We fell in love instantly, married just after graduation, and will soon celebrate our nineteenth anniversary. We have two amazing teenage sons, Alex and Aidan, both students at West Valley High School. My professional life has been devoted to public service. I began as a case manager, treatment provider, and mentor for juvenile offenders and kids in special education classrooms, and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. I served adults with serious mental illness while working at Frontier Behavioral Health. I then went to Gonzaga Law School, as a Thomas More Scholar, so that I could learn the skills necessary to make a systemic difference. After graduating from GU law at the top of my class in 2006, I worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in Spokane and had the honor of representing the United States in a wide array of civil and criminal cases. I learned more about what government can do and found solutions to large challenges. I moved to private practice in 2012, and have zealously and successfully advocated for consumers victimized by corrupt businesses, people trapped in jails and mental hospitals, and workers who have faced discrimination. I have helped hundreds of people recover millions of dollars, and have stopped numerous illegal practices. Through it all, I remain a determined optimist. Looking at how much progress we have already made, there is no reason that we can’t overcome today’s challenges. I thank you for caring about this community, and would be honored to work for you as your county commissioner. LAUNCHES NEW #CHANGETHEGAME CAMPAIGN, CHALLENGING PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE GAY September 13, 2016 – NEW YORK: Jack’d, a leading gay social app, is continuing its #ChangeTheGame initiative with an eight-week campaign aimed at challenging preconceived notions of what it means to be gay. Each week, the campaign focuses on a new topic of special relevance to the community of gay men that use Jack’d. Topics include the dangers of labels among gay men, measuring self esteem, and the importance of activism. The hope is by encouraging its members to openly discuss these issues and how they impact their daily lives, Jack’d will empower them to make more meaningful connections with others who share their views. The first week’s topic focuses on kindness. “Gay men often have this stigma that we are bitchy and unkind to one another other, especially on the apps,” says Russell Horsey, a Marketing and Social Media Specialist at Jack’d. “We’re asking Jack’d members to share the encounters they’ve had with people on apps, or explain why they were driven to be act a certain way to someone else. We’d also like them to discuss the value that they believe our community places on kindness.” Kindness is something most parents try to instill in their children at an early age. The Dalai Lama even says kindness is his religion. We all know – or, at least, have been told – that when we focus on kindness, our world becomes kinder and we become kinder. Kindness broadens our perspective. It breeds tolerance and understanding. It softens our heart, brightens our lives, and makes people want to be around us. So why does it seem to be lacking in the gay community – especially on the hook-up apps? Jack’d’s eight-week #ChangeTheGame campaign launched, September 14.
