HEAVY Music Interviews
Lashings Of Emotion With LUKE BENTHAM From THE DIRTY NIL

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2025 17:00

Interview by Kris PetersAfter playing together in high school, guitarist Luke Bentham and drummer Kyle Fisher decided to take on the world by forming The Dirty Nil in 2006. The following year, they won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year, kickstarting a career that would see the Canadian band rise to prominence over four albums and setting the band on a collision course with destiny. That meeting of superpowers seems set to transpire with the release of The Dirty Nil's fifth studio album, The Lash, on July 25. Recorded in just over two weeks, The Lash sees The Dirty Nil tap into an urgency of evolution that has been simmering quietly below the surface but has finally set itself free.Thematically, The Lash trades the band's usual romantic optimism for a cathartic scream, tackling everything from music industry burnout to heartbreak in a body of work that has been described as Luke's therapy record by Fisher. Stripping back the glitz and glam, The Dirty Nil go full-throttle on what matters most: no frills, just ferocity and good times in abundance.Bentham recently sat down with HEAVY to tell us more."We are gearing up to release our fifth studio album, The Lash, which unequivocally, in my opinion, is our best album," he began. "And I really do mean that sincerely. I know you probably get a lot of people on here saying that through perhaps gritted teeth, but this one, we do feel very strongly about it, and so we're extremely proud to present it to the world."We mention the more stripped back, raw sound promised on the album."The recording process was much faster and more stripped back than what we've pretty much ever done before," Bentham nodded. "We did it in two weeks with our friend down the street. Traditionally, we've worked with a producer from Seattle, who's an incredible producer with a huge resume of incredible albums, but this time we just did it with our friend down the street. So it was a very different process that way. During the album cycle for the last album, there wasn't a huge break or anything, and I think (with this one) we were just really feeling confident as a band, and the material came together very naturally and easily. I think that's part of the reason why I have such positive feelings about it, is because it wasn't a struggle."In the full interview, Luke highlighted the emotional depth of the album, expressing a connection to the darker aspects of human experience through music, and noted the introduction of strings as a new element in their sound. He shared an anecdote about a visit to the Vatican that inspired his songwriting, particularly a bronze relief that influenced the album's themes, although their attempt to use the artwork for the cover was halted by a cease and desist from the Vatican. He also reflected on the band's growth since their debut, emphasizing their increased musical competence and willingness to experiment, while remaining optimistic about future creative endeavours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to the episode 33 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. My guest today is none other than singer, songwriter, and one half of the multiple award-winning Vancouver-based alternative rock band “DEAR ROUGE”, Danielle McTaggart! For over 10 years now Dear Rouge, the alternative rock duo of Drew and Danielle McTaggart, have been winning fans over consistently and hitting new career heights. Following their major label debut record, Black To Gold, the couple picked up multiple Top 10 radio hits, a SOCAN Songwriting Prize, and a Juno for Breakthrough Group of the Year. Dear Rouge continued their upward trajectory with their sophomore album PHASES (Deluxe) which included the lead single Boys & Blondes and the #1 Alternative Rock hit, Live Through The Night. Along the way, they opened for artists like Phantogram, Lights, and Our Lady Peace, and wowed crowds on festival stages from coast to coast with their energetic and dynamic live performances. The band continued to solidify their presence in the Canadian music landscape with their third full length record Spirit. The record spawned the #1 hit Fake Fame, and the band picked up an Indie Award for Group of the Year at Canadian Music Week, before a packed summer of touring that included opening for Vance Joy and a tour supporting Canadian legends Metric. All the tracks from Spirit, along with the band's previous singles have seen heavy recurrent radio airplay, leading to Dear Rouge being the most played Canadian band on alternative radio in 2022. The band then returned to the studio with acclaimed producer Gus van Go (The Beaches, The Stills). The duo's new single Goon is out now. We had the pleasure of interviewing Milk & Bone over Zoom video.Behind the entrancing vocal harmonies and heartbreakingly honest lyrics of the electro-pop duo Milk & Bone hides the vibrant inner world of close friends and musicians Laurence Lafond-Beaulne (Soft Fabric) and Camille Poliquin (KROY). With every release, Milk & Bone redefine the boundaries of pop music with a mix of deeply emotional tracks and candy-pop hymns.Since coming together to create Milk & Bone in 2015, the duo has spawned two critically acclaimed albums and one EP: Little Mourning (2015), Deception Bay (2018) and DIVE (2019) on top of accumulating over 75 million streams online. On stage, the musicians have captivated audiences while touring across Canada, Europe and the United States. At home, the duo's touchingly personal songs have reached fans of such television series as Riverdale, Search Party, Broad City and Tiny Pretty Things, as well as several advertising campaigns, including Dior.Milk & Bone has won a Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year (2019), and was nominated for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2016, as well as two long list nominations for the Polaris Prize (2015 and 2018). Outside their record releases as Milk & Bone, Laurence and Camille have also crafted music for two original shows produced by Cirque du Soleil, as well two feature films from Québécois filmmaker Podz. The theme song for King Dave, titled Natalie, earned the pair a nomination for Achievement in Music (Original Song) at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards. After a long wait, the duo is ready to unveil the fruits of their musical and personal explorations with Chrysalism, a new album set to be released in 2022. For Milk & Bone, the writing process felt like a renewal of vows -- an opportunity for them to work together on new music with intention and desire, instead of doing it simply because it's the next logical step. The result is a highly spirited record that marks a departure into an unmistakably pop-forward territory for the duo. With enthralling vocals, synth-led music and melodic guitar riffs, the pair explores topics like love, longing and heartbreak from a decidedly more mature perspective, choosing to see themselves as actors in the storyline of their love lives, instead of victims of circumstance. What comes through is a poignant reflection of growing older and coming into oneself. We want to hear from you! Co-founder for the critically acclaimed Canadian reggae-pop-fusion group MAGIC!, Pelli wrote the earworm vocal hook for their hit single"Rude"which achieved#1status on US Billboardcharts for 6 consecutive weeks and also hit #1in many other countries around the world, gaining the band and Pelli himself a Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of The Year. MarkPelli has also performed with legendary songwriter Stevie Wonderin the south of France at a coliseum while on tour with fellow soul artist and vocalist Justin Nozuka. As well as being a prolific and experienced songwriter, Mark Pelli is also notable producer and engineer, and has produced records and tracks for many top artists includingUsher, J Cole, Chris Brown, Shakira, Anthony Hamilton, Trey Songz, Sabrina Claudio, JoJo, Marsha Ambrosius, Jennifer Lopez, Classified, the legendary Diane Warren and many, many more. These credits include co-writing the 2012 hit single"Don't Judge Me"by Chris Brown, co-writing "Inner Ninja"with Canadian hip-hop artist Classifiedft. David Mylesin 2013 and co-producing American rapper J Cole's first album single "Kevin's Heart"on his 2018 LP, "KOD". Born into a musical family in Toronto, picking up a piano at just age six, Pelli takes inspiration by nostalgic motown and soul artists Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson, tomoremodernized contemporary RnB or pop artist Leon Bridges- Pelli'swonderfully unique sound could be more comparable to singer-songwriters such as John Mayer and Ben Howard. Mark Pelli's latest single "You Changed Me"sparks open with guitar harmonics, and Pelli's subtle, yet velvetine voice whirls around full, deep bass lines, '60s inspired percussive techniques, hypnotically fixed organs and of course, a skillfully polished guitar solo to set the mood, and dim the lights for the rest of this refreshing, relaxing experience. On the latest single, Mark Pelli comments:"This is a bitter sweet song about love and confusion. It's written in a classic style - I was very much influenced by the music of Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson while writing and recording this song. I attempted to make it sound retro as if it had been recorded on an analog tape machine."  Website - Facebook - Twitter - Soundcloud - Youtube - Instagram - Spotify
