In the winter of 1924, the boroughs of New York City were plagued by a series of robberies ostensibly committed by a young couple. This was not the first time a woman had been involved in armed robberies; however, rather than be a reluctant participant in the crimes, it appeared as though the traditional roles were reversed and the young woman was the mastermind behind the hold-ups. The press quickly caught on and soon the “Bobbed Haired Bandit,” as she came to be known in the papers, was grabbing headlines across the country. Starting with the robbery of grocery store in early January, the Bandit's crimes got bigger as weeks passed, as did her personality. Not only did the criminal pair become famous for their exploits and fashion, but also for the ways in which she taunted the police with notes daring them to come after her. In time, the NYPD's inability to catch the bandit began to reflect very poorly on Mayor Richard Enright, who was ridiculed by both the bandit and the public. Finally, in late April, the Bobbed Haired Bandit and her partner were arrested in Florida, having fled New York earlier in the month after a robbery in which someone was shot. To everyone's surprise, the couple wasn't quite the Jazz Age antiheros everyone was expecting, but a young newly married couple who were desperately in need of money at a time when employment was hard to come by.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesBrooklyn Daily Times. 1924. Bookseller, publisher, Dissenter and dinner-party host, Joseph Johnson was a great enabler in the late 18th-century literary landscape . . . Daisy Hay is the author of Dinner with Joseph Johnson: Books and Friendship in a Revolutionary Age and Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Exeter, and Kathryn Sutherland is the author of Why Modern Manuscript Matters and Senior Research Fellow in English at the University of Oxford. Together they join the Slightly Foxed editors to discuss Joseph Johnson's life and work at St Paul's Churchyard, the heart of England's book trade since medieval times. We listen to the conversation around Johnson's dining-table as Coleridge and Wordsworth, Joseph Priestley and Benjamin Franklin, Mary Wollstonecraft and William Blake debate the great issues of the day. And we watch as Johnson embarks on a career that will become the foundation stone of modern publishing. We hear how he takes on Olaudah Equiano's memoir of enslavement and champions Anna Barbauld's books for children, how he argues with William Cowper over copyright and how he falls foul of bookshop spies and is sent to prison. From Johnson's St Paul's we then travel to Mayfair, where John Murray II is hosting literary salons with Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, and taking a chance on Jane Austen. To complete our tour, we glimpse the anatomy experiments in the basement of Benjamin Franklin's house by the Strand. Our round-up of book recommendations includes Konstantin Paustovsky's The Story of a Life which begins in Ukraine, Winifred Holtby's conversations with Wollstonecraft and Woolf, a fresh look at Jane Austen's Emma and an evocation of the Aldeburgh coast as we visit Ronald Blythe for tea. Episode 10: The Story of Anne Bonny & Mary Read Anne had flaming red hair, and the stereotypical fiery temper to go with it. She was the illegitimate daughter of Irish lawyer, William Cormac. In those days, having a child out of wedlock was kind of a big deal. William Cormac's maidservant, Mary, gave birth to Anne in sixteen ninety seven. Shortly after her birth and, not surprisingly, William's wife found out about the child and his mistress. So William fled with Mary and baby Anne to America, in order to avoid the scandal. They settled in Charleston, where they fell into a tumultuous life with a Troublesome Anne. As Anne got older, her father wanted nothing more than a respectable marriage for his daughter, but Anne had a mind of her own. A respectable marriage was not on her list of things to do. In today's episode we make predictions of what the next 12 months in the ANZ Salesforce market could look like. We look at which sectors are likely to grow the most, what could happen with salaries and the size of the talent pool due to potential border openings, and whether we foresee demand increasing. We discuss what the spread of Salesforce talent could look like across the cities in ANZ, and how companies are positioning themselves in the war for the very best Salesforce talent. If you'd like to remind yourself of the general sentiment amongst your peers from 2021, you can check out our annual Salesforce Market Survey for 2021, and keep a look out for our 2022 survey, which will be published in the coming months. In today's episode we take a look back over the past 12 months and revisit predictions that were made, and what ended up transpiring across the Salesforce market in ANZ. We look at which sectors grew, what happened with salaries and the size of the talent pool, and whether vacancies increased or decreased. We theorise the reasons for the developments which have unfolded in 2021, how companies have responded, and how differently the Salesforce ecosystem looks as we leave December 2021 from what it looked like back in January of this year. If you'd like to remind yourself of the general sentiment amongst your peers from earlier in the year, you can check out our annual Salesforce Market Survey for 2021, and keep a look out for our 2022 survey, which will be published early next year. As a matter of basic metaphysics, we classify individuals in terms of their relations to other things – for example, a parent is a parent of someone, a larger object is larger than a smaller object. The nature of relativity – the question of how things relate to other things – is a topic that winds its way through the history of philosophy to the present day. In Ancient Relativity: Plato, Aristotle, Stoics and Skeptics (Oxford University Press, 2020), Matthew Duncombe considers ancient views of relativity from Plato, Aristotle, the Skeptics (particularly Simplicius), and the Stoics (particularly Sextus Empiricus). Duncombe, an assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Nottingham, defends the view that these thinkers shared a common basic position that he calls “constitutive relativity” – the idea that relativity is a matter of the relative being a certain way, rather than having a certain predicate true of it or having a certain feature. He argues that this reading is in the background in a number of arguments in these thinkers, including Parmenides' main objection to Plato's Theory of the Forms, and that it comes into its own as a key element of the Skeptics' opposition to dogmatic belief.
