New supporter Gareth has chosen a cult classic comedy horror movie this week with 1990's Tremors. Tremors was a collaborative effort between director Ron Underwood, producer Gail Katz, and writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who crafted a unique blend of science fiction, horror, and comedy. Filming took place primarily in the arid landscapes of the California desert, specifically in the small town of Lone Pine, which provided the perfect backdrop for the film's fictional setting of Perfection, Nevada. The production team faced the challenge of creating realistic, underground monsters known as Graboids, which required innovative practical effects. The creature designs were brought to life by the visual effects team led by Amalgamated Dynamics, who used a combination of animatronics and puppetry to create the menacing and memorable Graboids. Despite a modest budget, Tremors benefited from a talented cast that included Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Reba McEntire, whose performances helped elevate the film's quirky humor and charm. The filmmakers strived to balance suspenseful moments with comedic relief, making the movie appealing to a wide audience. Upon its release, Tremors received positive reviews for its clever writing, engaging characters, and practical effects, which set it apart from typical creature features of the era. Though initially modest in box office success, it garnered a strong cult following over the years, leading to several sequels and solidifying its status as a beloved classic in the genre. As local handymen Val and Earl team up with a motley crew of townsfolk, including a seismologist and a survivalist couple, they must band together to outsmart and survive these deadly creatures determined to eliminate anyone who ventures above ground. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

When writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock were working as editors for the United States Navy while helping to produce educational videos, they had a thought while standing on top of a boulder in the middle of the desert — what if there was something underground that prevented them from actually getting off this rock? That spawned an idea for a monster movie about creatures that swim around under the dirt. The original working title was “Land Sharks” but that had to change thanks to a “Saturday Night Live” skit of the same name. They eventually teamed up with director Ron Underwood, who had previously worked with National Geographic and he had a better understanding about the kinds of creatures that could potentially haunt this movie script. After the writing duo received rave reviews for their film “Short Circuit,” they immediately began shopping around a new idea about some gigantic, underground worms that attack a small town called Perfection in the middle of nowhere Nevada. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to take photos with the Graboids and pole vault across some boulders as we look back at the 1990 cult classic “Tremors”…

Episode 264: The Crew's fighting a giant steampunk spider while watching Barry Sonnenfeld's Wild Wild West. After ruling the Fourth of July box-office with Independence Day and Men in Black, Will Smith stumbles with this box-office bomb. The critics and audiences weren't happy with the film. The story is bad, Smith and Kevin Kline lack their usual charisma, and all the blue screen composites are terrible (especially for a $170 million budget). But the production design, props, costume design, and music are truly amazing. Will Smith kills the title song, which may be the best thing to come out of this film. Hello! Welcome to the third episode of the audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. This episode we're blessed with a brand new director's commentary for "Heart and Souls", the whimsical, high-spirited 1993 comedy-drama directed by Ron Underwood (Tremors, City Slickers) and adapted – by Tremors screenwriters S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock – from Gregory and Erik Hansen's (impossible to find) short film "Seven Souls". The film wasn't the hit Universal Pictures was hoping for back in 1993 – full disclosure: I worked on the international release of the film, and one of the places it didn't get released was the UK – but it has been discovered over time, and I know it has a place in the hearts of a lot of people. And what a cast: Robert Downey Jr., Alfre Woodard, Elisabeth Shue, Charles Grodin, Tom Sizemore and David Paymer... not to mention Robert Downey Jr. playing Alfre Woodard, Charles Grodin, Tom Sizemore... (If you've seen the film, you'll know what we mean.) Hopefully we don't have to say this, but please watch the film before you listen to the commentary, as there are spoilers aplenty. As always, you can listen as a podcast, or cue it up to the film, which – thanks to JustWatch – you can find here (UK) or here (US). Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or tweet at us. (We know it works, because this episode was inspired by a listener who suggested we ask Ron Underwood to record a Tremors commentary – which he'd just done for Arrow's new box set, so he couldn't do for us. But he gave us the next best thing...) We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Oh, and follow us on Twitter to stay up-to-date on our forthcoming releases. Thanks for listening! Hosted by David Hughes. Produced by Sam Ibrahim. Music by Olli Oja. We watched tremors and I have to say that this may be the epitome of a made-for-TV-movie feeling movie. I’ve seen it 20 times and I’ll see it 20 more during my life, and that’s a good thing. (0:27) - Intro(8:30) - Trailer(10:15) - Synopsis(14:20) - Review(21:15) - Score(31:30) - Spoilers(1:20:30)  - Final Recommendations(1:23:40) - Baconator(1:33:53) - It Came From Social Media(1:47:15) - Outro and Thanks @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. Synopsis Tremors follows Val (Kevin Bacon) and Earl (Fred Ward) in their attempt to leave Paradise Valley, Nevada, while doing odd jobs and handyman work. As they make their way up and down the valley between odd jobs and quirky small-town characters they begin to notice a string of seemingly related ground-level killings.  Upon meeting up with a grad student, Rhonda (Finn Carter) who is doing some important if timely seismic research, they learn that there are a bunch of little earthquakes - or tremors - happening all over the valley.  Before they jump the gun on declaring that there is a 100 foot tall, 200 ton serial killer on the loose, they find evidence of a subterranean suspect. A worm of sorts.  The rest of the movie is spent running for their lives from an unlikely, if terrifying phenomena with a ton a quirky townsfolk. https://youtu.be/liJfZvXdiTE Watch Tremors Now Watch on AmazonClick here to Watch Review Tremors, by director Ron Underwood, is one heck of a solid movie. It’s basically a monster movie, but it feels a bit more like an action-thriller to me because of all the action and adventure that takes place, along with lots of changes of scenery and methods. Tremors is a nearly perfect movie in terms of it’s script, who we have S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock to thank for . Everything that is said or mentioned is followed-up on or ruled-out at some point in the movie. Almost nothing extraneous or unneeded is mentioned, and all the characters play a wonderful role in making Paradise Valley a believable place. Maybe the best part of Tremors is it’s intense focus on the characters instead of the monster. Sure, we see the monster but the focus of every scene is on the characters and getting the audience to empathize with them. This forces a pivot in the otherwise fucked-out monster movie paradigm. It’s why Jaws was great, and it’s probably no coincidence that this is essentially a Jaws remake - even down to the movie poster.  It’s terrifically ironic that a movie that focused so much on the characters instead of the monster spawned five completely monster-focused sequels that lack most of the charm of the first, with exception of the second movie, Tremors II : Aftershocks. Many horror skeptics will say that this movie is not a true horror movie noting the goofy fun and light ambiance, but I beg to differ. Not only is Tremors definitely a horror movie, it’s the most important kind of horror movie - entry level horror.  This is the stuff that I watched as a little kid and sent me scrambling for the rocks. It hooked my pint sized imagination and lit up every corner, making me wonder if it really was safe to play tag on the playground or if I should seek the high-ground. Tremors is interesting, has wonderful tension, and most importantly is fun as any movie you will ever watch.  Score 8/10 What Makes Tremors so Great? From an entertainment and rewatchability standpoint this is a bit of a sleeper, but upon review, it holds up quite well. a big part of this is the horror aspect mixed with good, old fashioned humor. Humor in Tremors The humor in this movie is goofy, and downright wholesome, but it's good enough to make you smile on every viewing. The wholesomeness of an early 90's feel good sitcom mixed with the horror elements of Jaws really works. It's directly responsible for the late success of the movie on television. In theaters,

They all ride the same bus that night and die because their bus driver Hal can't keep his eyes off a sexy pair of legs. The 4 souls of Penny, Harrison, Julia, and Milo all enter Thomas Reilly while he is being born in the family car. Hal for some reason gets a pass and accends to heaven. As the years pass Thomas is the only one you can see his ghost and they all form a deep bound. As the boy ages, he has problems because people think he's weird. Thomas's mother and father almost have him committed but the ghosts realize they are harming his life and make themselves invisible to Thomas. The abandonment causes young Thomas to avoid close relationships for the rest of his life, fearful that they, too, will leave him. Twenty-seven years later we meet Thomas, now a ruthless foreclosure banker who refuses to open up to his devoted girlfriend Anne and lives on his car phone. Hal returns with his trolleybus. Because his irresponsibility ended four innocent lives, Hal has been condemned to convey spirits to the next life, and he has now come for his former passengers. They reveal themselves to Thomas and he crashes his car. He wakes up in a hospital and he attempts to check himself into a psychiatric hospital, where a schizophrenic patient can see his ghost. This convinces Thomas that the spirits are real, but he is still angry with them for their abandonment and refuses to help them. The quartet convinces him by leaping in and out of his body during an important meeting and threatening further public humiliation until Thomas reluctantly agrees to help in order to finally be rid of them. One by one the ghosts solve their unfinished business. 1. Milo steals back the stamps and gives them to the grown-up kid. However, after the burglary, a nervous Thomas encounters a police sergeant (who is ticketing his illegally parked car) and accidentally gets himself arrested, forcing Anne to bail him out.2. Harrison uses Thomas's body to sing the national anthem at a B.B. King concert. Anne is in the audience and gets mad at Thomas for skipping their date. 3. After which Thomas is arrested again by the same police sergeant, who Penny suddenly recognizes as her son. Thomas tells Billy the location of his long-lost sisters, and Billy is so overcome that he lets Thomas go with a warning after hitting his car. 4. Finally, Thomas and Julia write a letter to Julia's boyfriend John in which she confesses her love for him, only to learn that John died several years before. At the same moment, the trolleybus returns to take Julia. Thomas protests that Julia's business is still unresolved, but Julia realizes that her true business is Thomas, who is making the same mistake with Anne that she made with John. Thomas promises her that he will tell Anne his true feelings before it is too late, allowing Julia to depart.
