Ep76: Marketing You Can Do While Writing Your Book

Writer Craft Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2022 54:04

Hello Writers and Crafters! I'm Valerie Ihsan, And I'm Erick Mertz, and this is Episode 76 of the podcast and it's July 14, 2022 as we record this. Main Topic: Marketing You Can Do While Drafting Your Book    This podcast is sponsored by our patrons at Patreon.com/valerieihsan. For as low as a $1/mo, you can get a shout out on the podcast and we can make announcements for you on the podcast. At other tiers, the benefits increase--free books, accountability Zoom calls, scene analysis, mastermind calls, and even free Writer Craft retreat tickets. Become a patron of the arts at Patreon.com/valerieihsan.      All marketing plans will be different based on your plans for the book, your career, and your personality, and--to some degree--your budget.   1) First, you'll need to decide what your plan is for this book and for any future books you plan to write. And you'll need to define TO YOU what success would look like for this particular book and also for your writing career. Do you want to write any more books? Do you want to be award-winning? Do you want to make a living with your writing? Et cetera. The answers to these types of questions will determine the answers to your other questions. Namely, how to market and promote your book(s).   It's also important to note that if your goal is to make a living with your writing, you cannot do that with book sales from one book. Think, 10 or 20, or more. UNLESS, you are also providing author services, like editing or retreats or teaching.   2) Paid Advertising. It's the way to go these days. It is a Pay to Play Market now. There are 8 million titles on Amazon alone.    The three top paid ads sites are BookBub, Facebook, and Amazon Ads. Additionally, there are FreeBooksy and BargainBooksy. As well as others. (For instance, if your e-book is published on the Kobo platform, there is a Promotions tab on your dashboard that enables you to partake in their promo days.)   Each of the ads platforms have different rules and suggested methods of operation. There are loads of books and other resources on all of them. (Help! My Facebook Ads Suck by Mal Cooper; Mastering Amazon Ads by Brian Meeks; Bookbub Ads by David Gaughrin; Bryan Cohen has an Amazon Ads School on his Instagram site @bryancohenblurbs--just to name a few.)   That said, up until very recently--and is still considered truth by many--the industry "standard" advice for advertising for authors with less than three to five books in one series is to NOT advertise. The return on your investment won't pan out very well with nowhere for the reader to go after reading your one book. (I don't know how many books you've published.) If an author has several books, then paying for an ad on one book can often lead a reader to reading the other books in an author's backlist, thereby making the cost of the ad click go much farther.   3) I believe the best thing an author can do to build excitement about their books is to write the next book. Seriously. If you look at it like any other business, a business owner (read: bookseller) needs to create more than one product for their store. They need to create free content marketing for their audience and to build a(n) [author] brand through engagement with their [readers] customers.   The most important first step in getting people to buy your product is to get readers to know it exists. That comes with getting on podcast interviews, going to networking events, doing book readings, teaching workshops at libraries, etc. That's Attract Marketing. Letting people know you are out there.   Then, you Engage with them. Write a blog, or do a podcast, or create some other way of engaging with the people that now know you exist, but still have not become a customer of yours (like get them on your mailing list).   Then, you Nurture them. That's where they begin to Know, Like, and Trust you. Still before they buy! This is the time when you'd be posting regular content for them in a newsletter or FB Live posts, or pictures of your life on Instagram.   Only then can you Invite them to buy.    And, in order to keep them as an ongoing client [reader], you must Delight them. Create the best book(s) possible and they'll come back for the next one and tell their friends.   This process isn't something you do in a week or even a month. It's a long-term strategy. It's part of the author life and part of our job. Have fun with it.    *** I hope some of that was useful and has given you some ideas for your marketing/promotional plans.   Another resource I would recommend is How to Market Your Book by Joanna Penn.   I'M READING: The Sixth Wicked Child Erick's Reading: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir Next episode: Erick's Coaching Session, Part 2   Resources:  Productivity for Creative People: How to Get Creative Work Done in an "Always on" World by Mark McGuiness Essentialism by Greg McKeown Lore podcast (and Prime series)   Announcements:   I wanted to announce that my friend, colleague, and mentor, J Thorn, just launched his new book, Writing Scenes.  I'm especially excited about this because I contributed to the making of this book in several ways, and I feel quite proud of all I did. One of the example scenes in the book is one I submitted from my current work in progress (my memoir). I narrated that scene (in the Before and After example) in the audiobook. And I edited the book for J. It would tickle me if you picked up the book for yourself. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a word from the episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices . . .You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In the personal update area, Mark talks about a recent 40% off Box Set promotion that he and author Sean Costello had with Kobo, how they added their own push for the promo, and how it helped them sell more copies not just on Kobo, but also on Kindle, Apple and Nook. Mark talks about the detailed analysis of the promo which he published for Patreon supporters of the podcast and thanks them for their ongoing support. In their chat, Mark and Brian talk about: How Brian once put off launching a fiction title for 60 days because he wanted to avoid the task of writing the product description How a description done correctly will convert at about 1 in 10 (1:10) - ie, ten views of an ad will result in a click through to the product by a potential customer The most common problems that authors face when trying to write their book product description The idea of using previous or existing reviews of a book to find hints and clues to what made the book special to readers Ways authors can practice writing or creating compelling product descriptions The ultimate goal of a product description, which is to get a potential reader to READ your book Creating a log line that can be used as an "elevator pitch" How formatting of a description can be as important as the words used in that description How the main goal of the FIRST line (or opening hook) of a product description is to get the reader to read the SECOND line The concept of the call to action to request the reader to "buy" or "get" the book today Brian's story of the "miracle product description" How customers don't care so much the difference between $2.99 or $4.99 and that their TIME in reading the book is something they consider more valuable, more precious The concept of variance, and how it can take 1000 clicks before you have enough data to accurately measure the results of a data set Amazon Ads for authors who are published exclusively to Kindle (KDP Select and part of Kindle Unlimited) VS authors who publish their books "wide" to all retail platforms Why an author shouldn't spend more than 90 seconds writing up their advertising copy What is a good place to start or to learn how Amazon Advertising works for you The critical importance of patience and setting expectations and how much investment of time and energy it takes to perfect the process How "Bid Plus" is a terrible idea for authors to use in Amazon Advertising How Brian gives about 7 to 10 days for an ad to see if they are "getting turned on" and, if it isn't, he kills it The differences of playing within the Amazon Advertising world today compared to how it used to be   In his post-interview reflections, Mark talks about three things from the chat that stuck with him. The idea of NOT using the "Bid Plus" option when creating Amazon Advertising Ads The concept of having a first line / log line of 4 to 6 words to grab the attention of a potential reader in your book description The methodology of incorporating elements from reader reviews of your book when revising your book's blurb   Links of Interest Brian Meeks Website Mastering Amazon Ads Facebook Group Mastering Amazon Descriptions Facebook Group Brian's Amazon Page The Facebook Live video for the interview segment of this podcast Findaway Voices Patreon for Stark Reflections Stark Reflections Survey   Brian D. Show Notes & Links: -What's the best way to know which keywords will work the best in my genre with my book? Where would you suggest I start looking? -What is the minimum number of ads I should be testing to get good results? -Is it true that AMS ads aren't really worth the effort unless you're in Kindle Unlimited. What's your opinion? -What are the biggest mistakes people make when running their AMS Ads? -I've heard that you should be running ads targeted at the books in the top 100 in your genre. I would think they would be the most expensive bids. How do you choose which books to target?  -How long should I let an ad run before I consider deleting it or changing up the copy? And how can I tell if the copy is the problem? -What are some benchmark numbers to watch? For instance, I've heard 70% ACoS or higher is considered good. Is that consistent? What's a good CPC for AMS?  - When should I consider tweaking keywords? Those with lots of impressions but no clicks? Only those with clicks even though they have no sales?  -How do I know if I am bidding the right amount to get traction on my ad? -Is it important to get on the first page of results for promoted books on another book's sales page? 35. How to Sell More on Book Markets other than Amazon

Book Marketing Show Podcast with Dave Chesson

One subject that has come up a lot in this podcast is the advice of not putting all your eggs in one basket. Amazon may be at the top when it comes to the book market, but newer platforms for people to sell their books on are emerging and making your book available on those platforms can increase your sales. Amazon has started cracking down on authors and publishing companies who are practicing deceiving tactics when it comes to increasing their sales, and Amazon has begun cracking down on these. But that has created some casualties of authors who weren’t breaking any rules, but were still dinged by Amazon. It’s important these authors are making their books available elsewhere, not only to avoid being left out to dry if Amazon decides not to sell their books anymore, but also to increase overall sales. While many authors see about 90 percent of their sales come from Amazon, our guest today, Tracy Cooper-Posey, has been able to market her books on other platforms and estimates that only 35-40 percent of her revenue comes from Amazon. She uses Draft2Digital, which helps distribute her books and she also distributes them herself on as many different sellers as she can find, including on her own website. She recommends learning the different platforms and how to create a vibrant presentation of the books yourself, instead of trusting an aggregator. This gives her a little more control over how her books are shown and even smaller sellers count. She also uses these smaller platforms in her advertising with the intention that the market will see her book sales increase and possibly promote her ranking within their ecosystem. But, like we’ve talking about in previous episodes, if you are planning on running any sort of ads for your books, make sure you give them a little time to pick up traction.   She also asks her readers to leave reviews on the platform they bought the book from. This may sound like a no-brainer, but it bodes well for our books if reviews are spread across different sites, and may increase the book’s visibility. Another thing she recommends is selling you book on your own website, which you can do through a shopping cart plug-in like Selz, Woo Commerce, or Gumroad so you’re not bogged down by technical questions and you can focus more on writing. Doing this also means you can set your own price and offer deals and coupons, and you can increase the revenue you recieve when someone purchases your book directly from you. However, if you’re selling your first book, you don’t need to worry too much about selling on your own site for the time being. A last piece of advice Cooper-Posey gives is to stay on top of industry news so you’ll be able to find out about new platforms that are just starting up. POSSIBLE PULLQUOTE: Things change and you can’t just set it and forget it, you keep monitoring, keep an eye on the ground, and listen to the gossip. Find out what’s going on in the industry.   Bio of the Author in the Case Study: Tracy Cooper-Posey is an award-winning author who’s published over 90 books since 1999, been nominated for five CAPAs including Favorite Author and won the Emma Darcy Award. Today, Brian Meek, an AMS subject matter expert, provides some great tips on what to do and what NOT to do while marketing your books via Amazon ads. He shares about the MOST common mistakes authors make with their ads in an effort to provide the best possible advice for all those wanting to get the most from their ad campaigns. As the author of Mastering Amazon Ads: An Author's Guide, listeners get firsthand advice from Brian including why one needs to master their copywriting skills for their book descriptions and the value of analyzing your ad’s performance on a regular basis. Tune-in to discover how you can strategize and unleash the power of Amazon ads and achieve those sales! Brian’s book Mastering Amazon Ads: An Author's Guide is a must have for anyone putting out Amazon Ads Was spending 2 hours every day answering questions in the “20 bucks to 50K” Facebook Group; has put all his answers into this book People have wrong expectations when it comes to Amazon Ads They expect Amazon ads to perform like newspaper blasts or discovery sites 80% to 90% of people that start with Amazon ads result in foiled attempts Working with Facebook Ads and Google Adwords colors an author’s view AMS reports and total sales are not reliable; often it takes as long as 72 hours to report data Often, a sale is not captured in AMS reports Analyze ads based on the impact to the KDP report and not the AMS report If you are bidding at a rate which is going to optimize your return on investment, you have a shorter window where your ads are working; and so, you need to replace your AMS ads more frequently Unlike Amazon Ads, Facebook Ads can run for 3 months and still be profitable Turning off all ads will enable you to get clean, baseline data and effectively analyze A former data analyst, Brian states that an 80% accuracy is good enough to figure out the long term trends and make correct decisions Do not bother with how a specific ad is doing; look at the entire group and analyze the cost per click A lower CPC value will convert at the exact same rate as the higher one with the passage of time Imperative for an author to cultivate and practice some basic data analysis Authors should be able to calculate their ROI; in layman’s terms, ROI is pile of money earned, minus the pile of money spent, divided by the pile of money spent, multiplied by 100 Do not get bogged down by spikes in sales; as long as the numbers are positive, just keep on trying to further improve Often authors tend to overbid for their sponsor’s product ads and then lose money; lower your bid, and you might end up making money Do not fear math; the more you practice, the better you will get, and it is hard to hate what you are good at Avoid getting emotionally attached to your ad; instead become emotionally attached to your ROI Never use the synopsis of your book as the description The importance of developing your COPYWRITING skills Brian has included a couple of chapters on copywriting in his book Unhappy with the description on his book, Brian put off launching his book for 4-6 weeks He mastered the skill of copywriting, rewrote the description and published his book Conversions dropped from 1 in 30 to 1 in 10 due to this; had he done this a year back in October 2015, Brian would have saved $60,000 Reaching out and helping others is the best way to improve your copywriting skills Avoid copying your old ads to maintain integrity of your data Top Tips by Brian: Redo the description on your first book; try to have the opening line five to six words and a hook Do not fall in love with a single ad; build volumes Try to keep a tab on what your ad is producing for you by looking at it everyday 4: Give your product display ads 2-8 weeks, especially if you are bidding conservatively Connect with Brian through Mastering Amazon Ads: An Author's Guide - Beta Group 3 Key Points:    Try to keep a tab on what your ad is producing for you by looking at your metrics every day.    Do not fall in love with a single ad – build volumes; an Amazon ad tends to lose effectiveness with the passage of time.    Give your product display ads 2-8 weeks, especially if you are bidding conservatively.
