After working for AML, Ohio Valley, and of course Joe Cazana promotions AJ Cazana, started working for the National Wrestling Alliance in early 2022. Eventually, he would team with Anthony Andrews as the Country Gentlemen and go on to win the NWA United States Tag Team Championship. The pair would be managed by Cazana's father and former wrestler Joe Cazana. The US Tag Titles were lost at The NWA 75 in St Louis, Missouri. At that point, Cazana started to team with his younger brother KC Cazana, and that pair would win the United States Tag Team Titles at NWA 76th. Cazana is also a former JCP Southeastern Heavyweight Champion and a former two-time JCP Southeastern Tag Team Champion.Cazana stops in to talk shop with Jay Cal about the National Wrestling Alliance, Joe Cazana Promotions, and what it is like being the United States Tag Team Champion. AJ details his transition from collegiate football player to pro wrestler. He also draws comparisons to the level of excitement of doing both. For a half dozen years beginning in the late 1990s, The Flood always greeted March's arrival with an annual road trip into the mountains. Providing an evening of music, jokes and stories, the band would entertain a roomful of visiting volunteers, kindly students who had come more than 600 miles from Milwaukee's Marquette University to use their spring break helping with assorted post-winter chores around the little mining town of Rhodell on Tams Mountain about 20 miles south of Beckley. As reported here earlier, from 1997 to 2002 The Flood's original three amigos — Joe Dobbs, David Peyton and Charlie Bowen — shared this weird, wonderful way to celebrate the coming of spring. To read more about these Tams Mountain adventures, click here. But, Hey, This is About a Song…Each year, party hostess Martha Thaxton never failed to ask the guys to play one particular tune before they left for their two-hour journey back to Huntington. It was a song that seemed to speak to Martha's own rambling soul as a die-hard folkie, a beloved Tom Paxton composition from his 1964 debut album for Elektra Records.“I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound” was a song Dave and Charlie knew well — they had played it with Roger Samples back in the old Bowen Bash days — so they were happy to dust it off for Martha and her visiting good samaritans. In the past 60 years Paxton's song has been recorded by everyone from The Mitchell Trio and The Kingston Trio to Tiny Tim and Dion (no, really!), from The Country Gentlemen and Country Joe to Doc Watson and Nanci Griffith. But surely the most touching rendition was Johnny Cash's recording of the song in his final session in February 2010.In a recent interview, Paxton noted that Cash used to come in The Gaslight back in the early 60s “in what we now know was his worst period. “He was skinny as a rail because of all the pills he was doing. He had not had his renaissance yet. But he was a gentle man. He was a direct man and he took you as you were. I just liked this man.”Paxton said he was “absolutely thrilled … to hear him sing the song. That's just a once in a lifetime kind of thrill.”Elijah Wald Blazed the TrailSpeaking of being thrilled, members of The Flood's crack research department are always overjoyed whenever they discover the blazed trails and rambling footprints of the incomparable Elijah Wald on some musical terrain they've come to explore. For nine years now, Wald's online “Songbiography” has been his musical memoir, giving history and personal reflection on some of his favorite songs, which often turn out to be Flood favorites too. Elijah's site was barely a month old when he took up “I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound.”It is a tune he loved as a young man, but, he writes, he couldn't “help noticing that Paxton himself got married back when he was writing these songs, and the marriage lasted, and he moved out to the country and raised a family, and all in all has had one of the most settled and stable lives of anyone on the folk scene.“It's as if he actually meant the last verse, where he sings that anyone who sees the ramblin' boy goin' by and wants to be like him should just ‘nail your shoes to the kitchen floor, lace 'em up and bar the door/Thank your stars for the roof that's over you.'”In retrospect, Wald said, “I think it's a nice touch that the singer keeps bemoaning his sad ‘n' ramblin' ways, but it's the girl, rather than him, who leaves on the morning train.”Our Take on the TuneSo this is an evergreen song, and that word has special meaning in The Flood band room. It is reserved for tunes that are timeless. This Tom Paxton classic might be 60 years old, but it feels it could have been written last week — or, well, a century ago. This is a public episode. This week, North Dakota based 2023 SPBGMA International Bluegrass Band Champions the Waddington Brothers recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with eldest brother Seth Waddington. “The Waddington Brothers, a band of four brothers from rural North Dakota, perform what they live: music that is real to them, that takes listeners on a journey through the heart of the American West. “Seth, Ethan, Jacob, and Job Waddington skillfully blend cowboy and bluegrass music, creating a style that's timelessly classic and yet refreshingly new and unique. With their rich, stirring vocal harmonies and instrumental versatility that ranges from hard-driving bluegrass to more mellow acoustic tones, this quartet has developed a sound that is truly as strong as it is special. And their gift for captivating an audience comes naturally to these men. Whether they're singing about cowboys or cabins, hunting or horseback riding, ranches or Indian reservations, The Waddington Brothers share heartfelt songs that evoke feelings of warmth, appreciation, and a genuine connection to the way life was lived by our country's pioneers. “This group shares their music as a well-polished craft: one that's been cultivated by four siblings who have been playing and singing together their entire lives. While their performing experience together traces back to 2004, the band officially came together as The Waddington Brothers in 2019. Their musical inspiration today is drawn from many pools of influences. Their sound might be described as a mixture of traditional bluegrass, gospel music, and Western strains reminiscent of The Sons of the Pioneers. Even more accurately, though, it can be described as something brand new—something powerfully different—a breath of fresh air to their audiences, that could only be created by four brothers with such an authentic synergy and blend. And it's been proven: in 2023 at the annual SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, The Waddington Brothers took first place in the International Bluegrass Band Competition.” - https://www.waddingtonbrothers.com/about In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of bluegrass legends the Country Gentlemen performing the Kris Kristofferson song “Darby's Castle,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater demonstrates American clog dancing styles and their influences.

Acclaimed bluegrass musician Missy Raines is also a very cool and funny lady originally from West Virginia, not far from the Maryland border and the city of Cumberland. First of all, I had questions for her about why people from West Virginia are SO into their state. She gets into that and also the influence of the rich tapestry of bluegrass music she found there as well as the scene in nearby Washington DC. Raines has made a significant impact on the genre, earning 14 International Bluegrass Music Association awards, including 10 for "Bass Player of the Year." Her latest album, "Highlander," showcases Raines' mastery of the bass alongside an ensemble of top-tier musicians from Nashville (her home base for the last 34 years) and beyond, blending traditional bluegrass with innovative twists.Throughout our conversation, Raines reflects on her deep connection to Appalachian culture and the Appalachian Mountains, which have profoundly influenced her music. We explore her experiences performing live at music festivals and the evolution of bluegrass music. We recount the passion her family felt for music touching on the story of her mom and aunt crying their eyes out over John Duffy leaving their favorite bluegrass band, The Country Gentlemen. She also talks about taking care of her late brother Rick, who died in 1994 from AIDS at the age of 39. Through that experience, she was empowered to help others whose loved ones were also dying and suffering from HIV and AIDS. With her unique blend of banjo and fiddle music and her activism in a normally conservative genre, Raines continues to push the boundaries of the genre while staying true to its roots, making her a trailblazer in the world of Americana and folk music. Our conversation was in depth, fun and enlightening - I had high hopes for this one and I was not disappointed!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Reading The Custom of the Country this winter has felt like stepping into the most lush, dramatic, and marathon-worthy period piece–so today we're sharing some of our favorite period dramas and pairing them with excellent books for cozy winter reading. We discuss the appeal of watching historical fiction versus reading it, the throughline from reading Dear America books to watching Downton Abbey as a comfort show, and the complex nature of colorblind casting. We hope you find a new, or old, TV series or novel to enjoy after listening to today's episode.  PS: if you hear some odd background noises in this episode, just imagine little toddler feet stomping above Chelsey's head!    For more pairings, classes, and nerdy conversation join our Patreon community! Sixty years ago this summer, Ironton, Ohio, native son Bobby Bare started work on his debut album for RCA Victor. The LP's title track — “500 Miles Away from Home” — would turn out to be one of the best-selling singles in the 88-year-old Bare's long career.Composition of the song is generally credited to folksinger Hedy West, who is said to have put it together from fragments of a melody she heard her uncle sing to her back in her native Georgia. One of Hedy's influences was a traditional tune called “Railroaders' Lament.”In 1961 West copyrighted the song, which many of us first heard the following year as the second track on Peter, Paul and Mary's wildly popular self-titled debut album for Warner Brothers.Enter Bobby BareIn 1953, an 18-year-old Bobby Bare left Ohio, getting a ride to California and playing music along the way to earn tips to help pay for the gas. In Los Angeles, Bobby struggled to break into country music or rock and roll as a performer and/or songwriter. He had little luck with his recordings, finding more success playing in nightclubs, until he was drafted into the Army in 1959.After his military service, Bare's big break came in 1962 when Chet Atkins signed him to record country music for RCA. His first single for the label was 1962's "Shame On Me,” followed by the Dennis Dill/Mel Tillis composition, “Detroit City,” which charted and won him a Grammy for best country & western recording of the year.It was after that Grammy that Bare recorded his 500 Miles Away from Home album. For the title track, Bare and his friend Charlie Williams wrote new lyrics to the melody that he characterized as “an old campfire song.” Years later, talking with interviewer Gary James, Bare remembered creating his version when he was living in North Hollywood down the street from Glen Campbell, his sometimes drinking buddy.“I was driving back from San Diego one night,” Bare told James, “and I was surfin' the radio and I heard Peter, Paul And Mary singing the old campfire version of ‘500 Miles' and I thought, boy, that's great! “Soon as I got home I got Glen's album and it was an instrumental. There were no lyrics. I called Charlie Williams up. I said, ‘Hey Charlie, come over and let's write some lyrics to this.'”“500 Miles” put Bobby Bare firmly on the musical map. His version became a Top 10 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, as well as a Top 5 hit on both the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. The Song's Incredible Legs“500 Miles” has been extraordinarily popular with singers all around the world. In America, it was covered by everyone from the Kingston Trio and the Country Gentlemen to Sonny & Cher, the Brothers Four and Elvis to Reba McEntire, Jackie DeShannon and Johnny Rivers.Beyond these shores, versions of “500 Miles” have been recorded in Albanian, Assamese, Bengali, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, French, Germany, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Slovenian, Spanish and Vietnamese. Whew! Our Take on the TuneWhen we play our monthly gig at Sal's Speakeasy in Ashland, Ky., we often like to have a salute to local folks who've made it big in music. For instance, we regularly perform “When You Say Nothing at All,” the song generally associated with Kentucky's late Keith Whitley. At our next show, we intend to offer “500 Miles” as a tribute to Bobby Bare and to all our Ironton, Ohio, friends.Incidentally, “500 Miles” also has a tiny West Virginia connection too. Composer Hedy West was the daughter of Don West, Georgia poet and coal mine labor organizer of the 1930s.Don co-founded the famed Highlander Folk School in New Market, TN, and later ran the Appalachian South Folklife Center in Pipestem in West Virginia's Summers County. Don died in Charleston, WV, in 1992 at age 86. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

I have never known Kamille to ever back down from a fight. Markova gave Kamille everything she's got… but with the crowd clamoring for more time, Kamille took the Burke and left. Could this be something more than general fatigue? Is this foreshadowing? Let's talk about it. Plus we know now that both La Rebelion and the Country Gentlemen will be in the Crockett Cup. The Champions have byes. We also know that Magnum Muscle (Dak Draper and Mims) The SVGS (Jax Dane and Blake Troop) and the team of Murdoch and Knox will all be in the Crockett Cup. We can assume that Kerry and Ricky will be in the tournament. And we can only assume Tyrus and his mystery partner will be in. But who else do you think will be in the Cup? Composed more than 60 years ago by the great John D. Loudermilk, “Windy and Warm” is a one of the late 20th century's most loved virtuoso pieces for fingerstyle guitar players. It was first recorded and released in the spring of 1961 by legendary guitarist Chet Atkins. In fact, the story goes that the tune came into being specifically because Chet wanted something that sounded old-fashioned, something in the old Merle Travis tradition."I'm getting too deeply into jazz,” Chet was reported to have said at the time. “I need to get back to my roots.”"I played this song for him,” Loudermilk mused many years later, “and he picked up the guitar and … he finished the damn thing before I finished it. And I wrote it!"The piece quickly became a signature tune for Chet, who continued to perform it throughout his lengthy career. It wasn't long after that thousands of guitarists — shoot, over the past six decades, perhaps millions — were learning it. Recordings came from everyone from The Country Gentlemen and Tony Rice to Tommy Emmanuel and David Grisman.Along Comes DocOf those also-rans who recorded “Windy and Warm” in tribute to Chet Atkins' original treatment, the most influential probably was Doc Watson's performance on his massively successful 1966 “Southbound” album. Doc recorded it again in 1970 in a popular “live” rendition with his son, Merle. The Watsons played it so well, in fact, that listeners who didn't pay attention to the album's credits might have assumed they wrote it themselves.Tommy EmmanuelThe day after John D. Loudermilk's death in September 2016 at 82, famed guitarist Tommy Emmanuel posted on Facebook that “Windy and Warm” was the first song “to come along and change my life.”Emmanuel added, “It was played by Chet Atkins and written especially for him by a great songwriter, storyteller, history-maker and all-round genius! … My love and sympathies go out to all the Loudermilk Family today. John, thanks for your humor, your passion for music, people and songwriting. We will never forget your beautiful blue eyes and your warmth for us all. Love you, Big Daddy.”Our Take on the TuneWhen the incomparable Dan Cox joined The Flood Fold last year, one of the first tunes he and his buddy, veteran Floodster Randy Hamilton, brought to the mix was “Windy and Warm.”While most of this take is all about Danny's pitch-perfect picking, it also features Randy and Dan vocalizing at one point, a moment that you can hear being happily applauded by Charlie. Check it out!Want More Danny? If that Dan Cox picking only whets your appetite for more, you're in good company. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Season 6 comes to an end this week with my guest - the incomparable Jerry Douglas, who has re-invented the concept of the Dobro over the last 50 years, while also working as a bandleader and acclaimed producer. There are select few musicians on the planet who have undeniably redefined their instrument and the way it is approached in modern music, but Jerry is definitely one of them. He has had an incredibly prolific career, starting in the mid 70's with stints in The Country Gentlemen, the groundbreaking JD Crowe and the New South, Boone Creek and with the incredible Buck White. Soon after establishing himself in the bluegrass world with those groups, he started playing on records as a session musician and became not only the most recorded Dobro player in history, but pretty darn high up there with anyone on any instrument. The number of records he's played on is somewhere seemingly about 1600. He's been nominated for 32 grammies, won 14 of them, and is a 10-time IBMA winner of dobro player of the year. His production credits are amazing too, and that really came to the fore with Allison Krauss and Union Station, not to mention his recent work with John Hiatt and Molly Tuttle. Jerry is very active with his own incredible band, and continues to produce and tour seemingly non-stop. He's been involved in alot of technical Dobro innovations as well, which are really interesting. We're going to get into all of that and more here today, and meanwhile you can keep up with his latest projects and touring at jerrydouglas.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

Bill Emerson was a banjo giant, whose work with Jimmy Martin & The Sunny Mountain Boys, The Country Gentlemen, Emerson & Waldron, and more, resulted in his 2019 induction into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. His impeccable playing, innovative spirit, and pleasant demeanor, made this southern gentleman a beloved figure in bluegrass music. This interview was recorded the day after his Hall of Fame induction in Raleigh, NC. Due to some technical difficulties with Mr. Emerson's microphone, the audio quality of this interview is subpar, but the content that this legend has to share is priceless. Bill Emerson passed away August 21, 2021, making this interview special, but bittersweet. The image of bluegrass is mountain music played and heard at high altitudes and towns like Deep Gap and remote mountain hollers across the Appalachians. But the earliest form of the music originated at lower elevations, in textile towns across the North Carolina Piedmont. As far back as the 1920s, old-time string bands like Charlie Poole's North Carolina Ramblers were playing an early form of the music in textile towns, like Gastonia, Spray, and Shelby - in Cleveland County west of Charlotte. In this second episode of Carolina Calling, we visit the small town of Shelby: a seemingly quiet place, like most small Southern towns one might pass by in their travels. Until you see the signs for the likes of the Don Gibson Theatre and the Earl Scruggs Center, you wouldn't guess that it was the town that raised two of the most influential musicians and songwriters in bluegrass and country music: Earl Scruggs, one of the most important musicians in the birth of bluegrass, whose banjo playing was so innovative that it still bears his name, “Scruggs style,” and Don Gibson, one of the greatest songwriters in the pop & country pantheon, who wrote “I Can't Stop Loving You,” “Sweet Dreams,” and other songs you know by heart. For both Don Gibson and Earl Scruggs, Shelby is where it all began.Subscribe to Carolina Calling to follow along as we journey across the Old North State, visiting towns like Greensboro, Durham, Wilmington, Asheville, and more.Brought to you by The Bluegrass Situation and Come Hear NCMusic featured in this episode:Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers - "Take a Drink On Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Ground Speed"Don Gibson - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Andrew Marlin - "Erie Fiddler" (Carolina Calling Theme)Hedy West - "Cotton Mill Girl"Blind Boy Fuller - "Rag Mama, Rag"Don Gibson - "Sea Of Heartbreak"Patsy Cline - "Sweet Dreams "Ray Charles - "I Can't Stop Loving You"Ronnie Milsap - "(I'd Be) A Legend In My Time"Elvis Presley - "Crying In The Chapel"Hank Snow - "Oh Lonesome Me"Don Gibson - "Sweet Dreams"Don Gibson - "Oh Lonesome Me"Chet Atkins - "Oh Lonesome Me"Johnny Cash - "Oh, Lonesome Me"The Everly Brothers - "Oh Lonesome Me"Neil Young - "Oh Lonesome Me"Flatt & Scruggs - "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"Bill Preston - "Holy, Holy, Holy"Flat & Scruggs - "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart"Snuffy Jenkins - "Careless Love"Bill Monroe - "Uncle Pen"Bill Monroe - "It's Mighty Dark to Travel"The Earl Scruggs Revue - "I Shall Be Released"The Band - "I Shall Be Released"Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"The Country Gentlemen - "Fox on the Run"Sonny Terry - "Whoopin' The Blues"Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee - "Born With The Blues (Live)"Nina Simone - "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free"Cover image courtesy of the Don Gibson TheatreAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

For the final episode of season one of Toy Heart, we have host Tom Power’s 2019 sit down with legendary artist, musician, and sideman Jerry Douglas at the International Bluegrass Music Association’s annual business conference in Raleigh, NC. Douglas talks all about hearing “Uncle Josh” Graves for the first time with Flatt & Scruggs and, in the early days, using a toothbrush to turn his own guitar into something like a Dobro. He tells stories of his father’s band, the The West Virginia Travellers, and being discovered by the Country Gentlemen. He shares about his lifelong friendship with Ricky Skaggs — and his connections with Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, Alison Krauss, Ray Charles, to O Brother, and more. Jerry Douglas will go down as one of the finest American musicians of his generation, but for this episode we focus on his true love — his life in bluegrass.

The Gents boasted an excellent line up in '76, including of course founding member, guitarist and lead vocalist Charlie Waller, Doyle Lawson on mandolin and vocals and with Bill Holden on banjo this collection of songs reflects that talent. Labelled bluegrass progressives for their masterful combination of folk, country, gospel and bluegrass traditions - The Gents appealed to and influenced a broad range of listeners and their music marked a beautiful, respectful but nuanced shift in the music of Bill Monroe to a more expansive interpretation of the same tradition. Waller's vocal similarity to Hank Snow was one he played on and with his enthralling picking technique, this album hasn't many dull moments. From a banjo-driven cover of Willie Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning"; to the title track and it's dealings with the timeless country and bluegrass themes of trains, hobos and ageing - The Gents have an absolute winner on their hands with "Joe's Last Train", and the four bandmembers dressed as railroad bums on the original album cover is only the beginning of the appeal.

Only five artists or acts have been inducted into both the Country Music and Bluegrass Music halls of fame, and only one is actively touring and shaping the dialogue around roots music generally. And that's 64-year-old Ricky Skaggs. As a fiddler, mandolinist, singer and band leader he's bridged the country/bluegrass divide more deftly than any artist alive, and he still does it with sets that split the difference as his band can shift gears on a dime. In a full-hour feature interview, Skaggs reflects on two key periods of his career - the 1970s when as a twentysomething he worked with epic bands the Country Gentlemen, J.D. Crowe and the New South, and Boone Creek, which he started with a young Jerry Douglas. And we talk about the 2000s, when he turned his full attention back to bluegrass and quickly dominated the industry with awards and era-shaping records.

When I started the Unstarving Musician's podcast, I had no idea how rewarding it would be to speak with all of the talented music artists I've met and interviewed over the past few years. I wanted to do something a little different for the 100th episode. A best-of compilation seemed a fitting way to celebrate the podcast's journey over the last two years. The interview segments I chose to feature are based largely on listener downloads, and inspirational value to me personally. It was tough choosing only four episodes to focus on when there are so many episodes that really stand out as among the most popular and personally inspirational. So I am pretty sure that there will be another best of sometime in the future. I ultimately decided to go with these four contributors. Mark Wenner, frontman of The Nighthawks (featured in episode 30) Modern Drummer Magazine's Mike Dawson (featured in episode 1) Singer Lisa Leuschner Andersen (featured in episode 33) David Barrett, blues harmonica educator (featured in episode 28) By the way, thank you for listening and thank you for supporting the podcast. It means everything to me! Mark Wenner The first featured guest is Mark Wenner, founding member and frontman of American blues/roots band The Nighthawks. Conversation Highlights with Mark Mark discusses his band's touring schedule, past and present. While I suggested that it looks like a busy schedule, Mark explains that it's nothing like it used to be. When the band was younger, it toured coast to coast. Today it's more focused on driving home after gigs and spending weekends with family. Mark and I discuss labels, and he shares the many changes he's seen. Mark believes that they still have a place, but it's much different than in years past. He also speculates  they'll continue to exist. Mark shares a story of discovering a punk scene. He found a new generation that had built a complete network for touring and music distribution, completely independent of the "industry." Mark explains that crossover to the mainstream eluded his band. He admits many of their peers had something The Nighthawks never quite figured out. Mark reminisces on DC as the once epicenter of bluegrass, remembering bands like the Country Gentlemen and Seldom Scene. He then thought The Nighthawks could have developed a similar ecosystem. Mark explains how opening for Muddy Waters tours created new opportunities and formed important relationships Mark explains how relationships with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood and others came to be, and how they helped the Nighthawks grow their touring circuit. Mike Dawson The second featured guest for this episode is Mike Dawson, Managing Editor at Modern Drummer Magazine, co-host of the Modern Drummer Podcast, and drummer-for-hire. He's one of the most creative guests I've had on the podcast. Conversation Highlights with Mike Mike talks about meeting and working with musicians who are formally educated versus self-taught or educated through private lessons How dynamics and learning to play quietly at a young age has given Mike many opportunities. Mike observes that drummers who can play quietly are hard to come by Mike elaborates on projects he's passionate about Mike talks about his love of recording, the art behind it, and how it lends to his content on YouTube, Instagram & Facebook Mike shares his morning practice routine and how it benefits his playing Mike shares his creative method and his goal to create without over-thinking Mike sees his morning routines as a way of setting himself up for daily achievement On the business of music, Mike discusses the importance of word-of-mouth, reputation, relationships, and professionalism Life-lesson from Mike's father that have paid dividends in his music career Lisa Leuschner Andersen The third featured guest of this episode is vocalist Lisa Leuschner Andersen. Lisa is a partner at the acclaimed Greaseland Studio. She was featured in seasons 2 and 3 of American Idol, and on Showtime at The Apollo. Conversation Highlights with Lisa Our conversation opens with how Lisa came to be a member of the Michael Jackson tribute band Foreverland Lisa explains why her stint on American Idol got her started on the road to doing music full-time Lisa talks about the fun and difficult parts of her American Idol appearances Lisa shares her experience as a contestant on Showtime at the Apollo Lisa discusses her contributions at Greaseland Studio as a vocal coach and singer I ask her about also being a drummer, and she talks about the skill of challenge of singing while playing (drums) Lisa and I discuss Bedtime Jams, a Facebook Live creation of Greaseland Studio and company David Barrett The fourth and final guest of the episode is acclaimed music educator David Barrett. He was originally featured in episode 28. David founded the San Jose School of Blues and BluesHarmonica.com. He also holds the distinction of being the only guest to do a live performance for the podcast. That performance has been included in this episode. Conversation Highlights with David The conversation opens with David's admission that schools could have cared less about harmonica when he was in college David explains his endless fascination for the harmonica David shares the motivation and evolution behind the creation of the School of Blues David shares a full-circle story involving local musicians and the School of Blues faculty David explains his teaching philosophy David tells me why he feels an obligation to create opportunities for all of his School of Blues students David offers advice to others interested in starting a music school, sighting the importance of community and a nurturing environment The interview closes with David playing a tune on the harmonica Visit UnstarvingMusician.com for additional show notes and bonus content.

Jerry Douglas in the encyclopedias as the singular innovator of the Dobro, that horizontal acoustic slide guitar developed in the early 20th century. But that's like calling Charlie Parker a saxophone player. Jerry is a consummate creator who found an unlikely muse and who made the most of it. Among the vast catalog, Douglas has recorded or performed with: Charlie Waller's Country Gentlemen, The Whites, Ricky Skaggs, JD Crowe, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, James Taylor, Garth Brooks, Elvis Costello, Bill Frisell and it just goes on and on. Since the mid 90s he's been a key voice, instrumentally and vocally, in Alison Krauss and Union Station. Recently he formed the Earls of Leicester, a deeply traditional bluegrass band that channels the work and feeling of Flatt & Scruggs, and they promptly won every award in sight. And for many of us, the hub of the wheel of Jerry's world has been his lifelong collaborations with fellow newgrass superstars Bela Fleck, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Tony Rice and Edgar Meyer. And yet for all his adventures, Jerry the  band leader and composer never quite found the path to writing and recording in an idiom he's loved his whole life. Until now. He's recently released a jazz fusion record called What If.  Also on the show, a short interview with Anna Bek Schwaber, producer and director of The Porchlight Sessions, a profile of the bluegrass community in the 21st century that's newly out as a web pay per view documentary.
