I'm honored today to bring you a conversation with Honorée Corder, who is my Yoda, Gandalf, and Dumbledore all rolled into one. She's my mentor and business coach, and it would be an understatement to say she's had a big impact on my life and business these last few years. Honorée Corder is the #1 expert on self-publishing. You can scour the internet, and I promise you will not find anyone who has more experience, credibility, or success when it comes to publishing and marketing their own books and creating a multi-layered, successful business from their ideas. She is also the author of dozens of books, including: You Must Write a Book, The Prosperous Writer book series, Vision to Reality, The Bestselling Book Formula, Write Your First Nonfiction Book, She's sold millions of books, so she definitely knows a thing or two about selling and success. Honoree also runs the Empire Builders Mastermind, which has been an awesome experience these last couple of years. One of the ways we work together is that Honorée offers bespoke book creation to clients, and I'm the ghostwriter for those projects. Basically, this means it's ghostwriting, publishing, and marketing at a very high level. It's been an honor and a pleasure working on her team because she not only knows about marketing … she's also written dozens of books and has sold books in every conceivable way. Today's episode is a recording from Honorée's recent appearance as a guest expert in our Profitable Writer Community. We do a call each week, and once a month we feature an expert. Honorée shared some thoughts about money mindset and book monetization from her brand-new book, You Must Monetize Your Book. On this call, we hit on several key topics: The meaning of the phrase, “Scared money don't make money.” Using the filter ELFF (easy, lucrative, fast, fun) to decide which income streams to develop. Why you need to start thinking a lot bigger. Various income streams you can develop. I encourage you to grab a copy of her new book because she shares a lot more detail than what you'll hear on this call. But I hope it whets your appetite for more! You can connect with Honorée and learn more about her books, courses, and more, by visiting https://honoreecorder.com. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Karen Hunsanger, an incredible editor known as “The Word Wizard.” I've worked with Karen many times, and she is your secret weapon for crafting the highest-quality book possible. As a ghostwriter and author coach, I talk to a lot of writers. Whether someone has already written a book, or they're considering writing their first one, I hear something like these phrases quite often: I'm stuck. I don't know what to write about. I don't know how to get started. When you get stuck in the “writer's vortex,” it can feel debilitating with no clear way of escape. Thankfully, my guest today has a fantastic, brand-new resource to help both aspiring and seasoned authors alike. Her name is Honorée Corder, and this past Monday, she released her newest book, There is No Such Thing as Writer's Block: You Can Unleash Your Inner Prolific Writer. You've probably heard Honorée on the podcast before, and she's made multiple appearances here for a good reason: she's not only a good friend, but also my business coach, and leader of the Empire Builders Mastermind, which has been an awesome resource for me the last couple of years. Honorée Corder is the author of dozens of books, including: You Must Write a Book, You Must Market Your Book, The Prosperous Writers book series, The Bestselling Book Formula, The Successful Single Mom book series, and many more. In this episode, we do a deep dive into several topics related to writer's block. We talk about what it means to be a professional writer, how to remove the blocks holding you back, writing to the container of the book, surrounding yourself with other writers, and much more. You can get There is No Such Thing as Writer's Block on Amazon, and I also recommend signing up for Honorée's extremely helpful email list at https://honoreecorder.com. We also have 5 copies of the book available as a giveaway. The first 5 to leave a review of the Daily Writer Podcast on Apple Podcasts will receive a print copy in the mail. Honorée Corder is an executive and strategic book coach, TEDx speaker, and the author of dozens of books including You Must Write a Book, and she's co-creator of The Miracle Morning book series with Hal Elrod. Honorée passionately coaches business professionals, writers, and aspiring non-fiction authors who want to publish their books to bestseller status, create a platform, and develop multiple streams of income. As expected, Honorée was her usual delightful and inspiring self! We cover her latest book, which is all about Writer's Block and how it's largely a myth (at least, as we usually understand it). With that conversation as a launchpad, we touch on her process in producing so many books, and how that commitment to her frameworks actually gives her the freedom to do her best work in the best way. Also, she reveals her REAL reason for writing this latest book - cake! In between process and cake, we find ourselves talking about many of the core aspects of great coaching - like the importance of asking good questions and providing a new vocabulary for finding and exploring the answers. This episode is just too action-packed to properly describe here - you'll have to give it a listen to get the goods! When you talk to writers, there are certain themes that come up repeatedly in conversations. One of those themes is that authors know they need to market their books, but get confused about how, when, and where to start. I'm thrilled today to have a guest who is not only the #1 expert on self-publishing… she's also a bona fide expert on book marketing, as well. You can scour the internet, and I promise you will not find anyone who has more experience, credibility, or success when it comes to publishing and marketing their own books and creating a multi-layered, successful business from their ideas. Her name is Honorée Corder, and she is the author of dozens of books, including: You Must Write a Book, The Prosperous Writers book series, Vision to Reality, Business Dating, The Successful Single Mom book series, and many more. Next week, she's releasing her brand-new book, You Must Market Your Book: Increase Your Impact, Sell More Books, and Make More Money. This is a fantastic book that is concise, to-the-point, and exactly what you need to start selling more books. I would be hard-pressed to say there is anyone who has had more impact on my mindset and growth the last couple of years than Honorée. I'm in my second year of her amazing Empire Builders Mastermind, and it has truly been life-changing. In this interview, we dive into a few topics in her new book, You Must Market Your Book, including: where book marketing really begins, how to think like a business person, how to market with your book, and much more. One of the common misconceptions among writers is that success is a mystery. Many people believe that some books are just magically successful for no good reason, and others languish forever with no readers. It's all just luck of the draw, right? Not so fast. My guest today is here to help us understand the simple yet incredibly effective formula for crafting a bestselling book. Her name is Honorée Corder, and she THE self-publishing expert. Honorée is the author of dozens of books, including: You Must Write a Book, The Prosperous Writer book series, Vision to Reality, Business Dating, The Successful Single Mom book series, and many more. She is also the co-author of The Miracle Morning book series, which has over a dozen titles. Honoree coaches business professionals, writers, and aspiring non-fiction authors who want to publish their books to bestseller status, create a platform, and develop multiple streams of income. She also happens to be my writing and business coach, and I've benefitted greatly from her wisdom through her courses, books, and the Empire Builders Mastermind. In this conversation, Honorée breaks down the Bestselling Book Formula, which consists of four key elements. If there's a book that stands the test of time, makes the author money, grows their platform for years, it probably contains some version of this formula. A Strategic Book Coach Meets a Recovering Magazine Editor at the Podcast Cafe Honoree Corder is a Strategic Book Coach, a self-publishing expert, and the author of 53 books that have sold 4 million copies!  She also calls herself a co-creator: “I work with professionals and entrepreneurs to help them write, publish, and monetize their books.” For the purposes of this conversation, refer to her title, You Must Write a Book: Boost Your Brand, Get ...  Dave Herndon is a recovering magazine editor and newspaper person, which makes him one of a legion of former print journalists who are trying to find a Plan B (C, D...)  since the publishing industry has cratered and jobs have disappeared. He’s now a wordsmith for hire (editing and writing) and a podcasting apprentice. To learn where he’s coming from, check out Herndon-at-Large.com. Dave asked the questions, Honoree did most of the talking, and John chimed in with insights about how podcasting fits into the communications and branding ecosystems. Key talking points include Honoree: Self-published books can’t be amateurish. You need to have them edited, designed, and proofed professionally. Her indie team is full of pros with backgrounds in traditional publishing. “You can actually hire really great people who are making a fair living because you're paying them directly.” Honoree: Self-publishing can be more rewarding than traditional publishing. “I can create a book that is every bit as good and I get to do all of the other things that I want to do with the book. I get to have quality control. I get to have content control. I get to have timing control. I get to have creative control. I get to keep all the cash.” Honoree: Carpe diem! “Write it, write it, write it. You have more time than you've ever had and may ever have. Again, we don't know when this is going to be over and you might have to go back to work. … You can't predict the future, but you can sit down and write.” Honoree: Podcasts are great publicity. “As a podcast guest, I have done about 500 podcast interviews. And when someone signs up for my newsletter, one of my questions is how'd you find me? And it's always through someone recommending, or they heard me on a podcast.” John agrees with her: “Your podcast is your advertisement. … It's just great, quote-unquote, advertising.” John: Podcasts are still the land of opportunity. “Last count [there were] … about 900,000 podcasts …Only about 250 to 300,000 are actually active….So when you compare basically podcasting to any form of media, it's just wide open still. ...it's certainly less than $500 a year, depending on how much you really want to get into it.” Honoree recommends these writers’ podcasts for tips and technique: Kelton Reid – The Writer Files and Six Figure Authors. New Releases and Reviews: Dungeon Desolation (Divine Dungeon book 4) (06:14) The story is filled with punny humor, adventure, cultivation, and some pretty awesome battles. Score: 7.8 out of 10 https://amzn.to/2IAKh6x Dark Elf Chronicles Book Two: Survivors (10:06) There are lots of new characters in both the IRL and game storyline, lots of adventures, and even a bit of sadness. Score: 7.5 out of 10 https://amzn.to/2Pt8K3y Beginnings (Peaks of Power Book 1) (13:17) Overall, while there were some marked improvements made to the story from early drafts, it still has pacing and storytelling problems. Today our expert guest is Honoree Corder, an “authorpreneur” who coaches business professionals, writers, and aspiring non-fiction authors who want to publish their books to bestseller status, create a platform, and develop multiple streams of income. But really, that doesn't even scratch the surface of everything she does, and her badassery is legendary!   Honoree is, incredibly, the author of over 50 books, including You Must Write a Book, the Prosperous Writer series, and most recently, Write, Publish, and Market Like a Boss: The Complete Series. She is also previous guest Hal Elrod's partner in the Miracle Morning book series.   So how does writing a book help someone develop multiple streams of income?   First, of course, book sales can generate money, if you write it in a way that it is readable, it adds value, you publish it professionally, and you market it until you die.   But after that, a book can birth multiple streams of income: speaking, consulting, coaching, group coaching, events, and anything else you can do to repurpose the content of your book.   The 5 people that should be on your book business bench:   A professional editor Proofreader Book cover designer Formatter Copywriter   Self-Publishing VS Traditional Publishing   The traditional publishing route isn't for everyone. It's full of gatekeepers, and frankly you're not actually likely to make very much money – Honoree is working with a six-time New York Times bestseller who teaches writing classes to pay her bills.   But when you self-publish, you have complete control. You get to choose what to write about, when to publish it, where to distribute it, and for how much.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “You have to have a belief in yourself in order to make anything happen. You can want something, you can wish for something, but if you don't believe that you can have it or that you deserve it, then you won't actually go for it. You can achieve anything that you believe you deserve to achieve, and you should believe that you deserve anything you want.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Here are the fun nuggets from our interview: Fun nugget #1: There is nothing sexy about being hungry Fun nugget #2: Be on the lookout for folks that have made money Fun nugget #3: Create some juicy affirmations about your writing life (and say it 25 times a day!) Fun nugget #4: Turn your affirmations into actions (as you pray, move your feet) Fun nugget #5: Your “magic morning” can start whenever you start to take action Fun nugget #6: We have to be consistent with our writing practice Fun nugget #7: Treat your book like a business Sub-nuggets under treating your book like a business: 1. Go FIRST where most books are sold (Amazon) 2. Make sure that your advanced readers are your target market (so that Amazon will market to the right people) 3. Avoid spending thousands on publicity in one huge chunk (you’ll likely not get a return on that investment) 4. Instead, use small on-going investments to “seed the market” to build world of mouth buzz about your book. Examples Honorée gave us include leaving “loaner copies” in offices, leaving your book in coffee shops, using stamps — through Zazzle –sending out postcards and giving away bookmarks.

Must-Know Publishing Tips with Honoree Corder Tips for Your Launch Strategy Start building your list from the time you consider writing a book. It's the one thing you need for short-term and long-term success. Each book launch may look different. It depends on the outcome. The launch starts 2-3 or even 6 weeks before the book with the formation of an advanced reader team. This will be made up of your ideal readers, not just friends or random people who say yes. PRO TIP: Make sure your ideal reader team is targeted to the audience who would be likely to actually BUY your book because of interest. Not just friends or your mom. Probably NOT your mom. When these people buy your book, it can skew your also-boughts underneath the sale area on Amazon, which means that your book may not get shown to the right audience! You can gift a free advance copy to your reader team, but also ask them to buy and review and explain WHY it matters. If people cannot afford your book, consider how they might help you out in another way. Should You Try Hybrid Publishing? For a moment, let's define the terms. Traditional publishing is when you have one of the big five publishers or a small press publish your book. They pay you an advance and royalties if you sell more copies than the cost of the advance. Indie publishing is the new term for what we used to call self publishing. It means that the author takes control for all aspects of the book (though often this means hiring an editor, a cover designer, etc) and publishes the book without an outside publisher. Hybrid authors is a term NOT to be confused with hybrid publishing. These authors may have some traditionally published books and some indie books. Hybrid publishing is when a company asks for an upfront payment from authors in exchange for publishing, printing, distributing, or other aspects of the publishing process. The contracts and terms vary. Why Hybrid Publishing Might Not Be the Best (or a Good) Choice There are horror stories. Many. I hear them all the time from authors who paid thousands of dollars to get hundreds of copies of their book that may or may not even look professional. At best, you may end up with a book that has been formatted and have a cover designed...both things that you could do yourself or pay someone to do for MUCH less. For more warnings on companies to avoid, here is a great site! Hat tip to Elle Mott for this one! But one of the big points to consider is WHAT ELSE COULD YOU DO WITH THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY? (Or even less.) You could hire a top cover designer, editor, and even pay for Facebook ads or AMS ads for less than you would pay a hybrid publisher. Other Publishing Tips for Authors For non-fiction authors, consider how you can intentionally network. (See Business Dating.) Find 11 other professionals who serve the same client or ideal reader, but are not your competition. Then you can support each other and share clients. Intentionally seek them out. Then if you REALLY like them and connect well, ask for referrals. Practical tip: offer them copies of your book. For fiction authors, consider making a square cover that you'd be using for ACX (audiobooks) and have your followers and readers change their profile image to your book cover on launch day or as they finish the book. Consider having stamps made with this same image and use them to send mail. Ask yourself if you could spend your money in a wiser way. But don't think about trying to be CHEAP. Consider the way you send money as an investment. Your covers will be helping you sell books and bring in money for YEARS. Hire a professional copywriter or invest time to learn this. A cover gets people's attention. Copy converts people into buyers. You must write a book. Even if it's ONLY for your family and the people that follow you. Can I just say that I LOVE that Honoree burned her own books? There is something freeing there. And humorous. Ep. 17 - Honoree Corder: How Short-Term Massive Action Can Lead To Long-Term Massive Results

The Impact Entrepreneur

Today I have a delightful and authentic conversation with Honoree Corder. She is an entrepreneur, coach, speaker and prolific author. Currently, she is writing her 20th book, You Must Write a Book, for professionals who absolutely should write a book as a differentiator. She calls writing a book “the new business card.” Honoree was raised with an entrepreneurial spirit. “Being an entrepreneur means you get to eat what you kill.” Your effort is returned to you, and only to you. Entrepreneurs are punished or rewarded based on how much time and effort they put into their businesses. “Go ahead and start the business, instead of having it as an idea that's marinating. If it's been marinating, it's marinated.” If you start, your business will, over time, take on a life of its own. If you're currently an employee with the hunger for entrepreneurship, turn your idea into a side hustle. “Keep going. Be patient. Some day your side hustle will be your main hustle.” Carve out time to do the thing that you really want to do. That will fuel you, feed you and tide you over. If you're waiting to jump from one situation to the next, you're missing out on an opportunity for your passion to grow and be nurtured. Honoree wrote her first book because she had a 15 second mentor. She met http://markvictorhansen.com (Mark Victor Hansen) at a conference, and he said to her, “Everybody is a coach and a speaker, you need a book.” She took her most popular presentation and turned it into a book. Honoree wrote the amazing book Vision to Reality: How Short Term Massive Action Equals Long Term Maximum Results. In order to get from where you are now to your dreams, there are certain steps that have to be taken. You have to take short-term, massive action that will compound, and it will lead to long-term massive results. Four things precede a successful new reality: Think – If you don't think you can achieve your vision, you want get to the next step. Believe – If you don't believe your vision is possible for you, it will not be possible. Deserve – If you don't believe you deserve your vision, you will reach an upper limit to success. Commit – Finally, you have to commit yourself mentally, and commit your time, to your vision. Be authentically yourself. Authenticity is so powerful because people want to know that others are imperfect, and that others are vulnerable. Those are strengths, not weaknesses. Honoree invents the word “authentistic” during the interview to describe the act of being authentic and fantastic. You mess up, you have struggles, you are human, and it's okay. If you want something, you have to give it away: this can be anything from money to love to authenticity. As an author, Honoree wants good reviews. So, one day she decides to review The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod on Goodreads. Now, she and Hal have a partnership to create The Miracle Morning book series. “I think that people have the perception that successful people, in whatever they do, are somehow special people, and the only difference between successful people and people who aren't as successful as they want to be … is that they have done a little bit more a little bit longer.” Honoree truly exudes authenticity and positivity in the advice and stories she offers during this episode. I had a lot of fun talking to her, and I hope you got something great from it too.   SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How did Honoree go from single mom to prolific author? What are some ways that employees with a hunger for entrepreneurship can take their first step? Why did Honoree write Vision to Reality: How Short Term Massive Action Equals Long Term Maximum Results? How do people break through their own façade to be authentic? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How authenticity can be a powerful force for success Why, if you want something, you have to give it away How to bring an idea from vision to reality Why you should write a book Plus much more…

Mark Lefebvre, Kobo Writing Life Director, in conversation with Dean Wesley Smith, a USA Today Bestselling author of books in multiple genres including Science-Fiction, Mystery, Thrillers and Westerns. Currently producing novels in four different series, Smith is also the co-publisher of WMG Publishing along with his partner Kristine Kathryn Rusch and runs a series of workshops designed to help writers become smarter not only about the craft but also about the business of publishing. During their conversation, Dean and Mark talk about: ·         The fact that Dean wasn't born into writing, actually loathed it when he was in college (He has a Masters in Architecture) ·         The various careers and roles that Smith played during his life, including his past as a Pro Golfer and hot dog skier ·         How his goal of being a Golf Course Architect led to writing via an English course that he had to take. ·         The English Professor who told Smith that his writing was too commercial ·         The writing class that forced Smith to submit a poem to a college poetry market (at which he won second place and $300) – at the time, he had to go see the professor to ask about it because he had no idea what it meant ·         After this experience, Smith tried his hand at fiction, wrote a 1000 word short story and mailed it off to a market right away. Then he wrote a second story and mailed that off right away. Both stories sold immediately. ·         How, after these first three successes, Smith started listening to people's advice (AKA myths) about writing, and re-wrote his stories to dead, and for the next 7 years never sold a single thing ·         It wasn't until 1982 that Smith ran across Robert Heinlein's Business Rules of Writing, followed the advice, started selling again and has never looked back  (http://www.deanwesleysmith.com/heinleins-business-rules/)  The RULES  o   1 – You Must Write  o   2 – You Must Finish What You Start  o   3 – You Must Refrain From Rewriting Except to Editorial Order  o   4 – You Must Put It on The Market  o   5 – You Must Keep It on The Market Until Sold ·         Dean's books:  Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Publishing and Killing the Top Ten Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing. ·         The magazine that Dean and Kristine Kathryn Rusch ran for 9 years, called Pulphouse. ·         The Starfleet Corps of Engineers Series that Dean kicked off in the Star Trek Universe – a series about the people who follow up after Captain Kirk, cleaning up his messes (which was originally meant to be an eBook back in 2000 and knocked John Grisham off the eBook bestseller list when it was released) ·         The challenge of writing within an existing restrictive universe, such as Star Trek, such as the reader having to hear Shatner's voice when writing the character Captain Kirk. ·         Smith's lesson for writers creating character voice by paying really close attention to the differences in voice you can easily see created for the Star Trek characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy ·         Regency Romance as one of the only genres that Smith really can't write in ·         How Westerns, (the old West) and Science-Fiction are two of Smith's go-two genres for writing. ·         The FICTION RIVER anthology series that Smith edits with Kristine Kathryn Rusch and how this river of fiction brings in new talent along with some major names from the genre.  (For example, the latest FICTION RIVER property, Pulse Pounders, edited by Kevin J. Anderson, included a previously unpublished sci-fi story by Frank Herbert) ·         The Oregon Coast workshops where the FICTION RIVER anthologies are derived that include a board of 6 Editors critiquing the stories live on stage and how that helps inform writers that what one editor rejects another editor might have bought ·         How the workshops that Dean and Kris started originated as the “Denise Little” short story workshops; because of the similarity to the way that editor/agent Denise Little liked to teach these principles ·         A bit about Smith's Monthly Magazine, which has both a paper and an eBook edition ·         How Smith sees the approximate 80,000 words that he writes each month as still “not enough” ·         Smith's ongoing Blog in which he shares daily insights: Writing in Public ·         How the teaching that Smith does is part of his desire to try to give back or pay forward to the industry in the way that the industry and writers before Smith have given so much to him ·         One of the biggest myths from indie publishing, regarding indie writers not being able to get their indie published books into bookstores and the “fairy dust” that has long been spread regarding that ·         How Smith isn't anti-traditional but is 100% pro smart-writer   Other Links Dean Wesley Smith's Books at Kobo WMG Publishing Workshops WMG Publishing Lectures Fiction River Anthologies (website) Fiction River Anthologies (Kobo)
