The reciprocal relationship between mindfulness and creativity is fascinating. Sometimes when we're our most tapped in and mindful, we invite in powerful waves of creativity. Other times, when we're out of sync, creative endeavors can be a vehicle for exploration and expression that helps us ease back into more mindful rhythms.   In today's episode I talk with Katy Oberle, a licensed psychotherapist turned Creative Mindfulness Coach and singer/songwriter. Katy is passionate about expanding the definition of mindfulness to include creative, nature-based and embodied practices. She coaches clients to develop their own “brand” of mindfulness that honors their innate creativity, life circumstances, values and goals. Katy believes that when our wise creative spirits come out to play, healing and transformation can happen at all levels.   Katy shares with us what it means to practice mindfulness and some of the benefits that come with it. Additionally, Katy talks about being mindfully creative vs. creative mindfulness, provides advice on how to tap into compassion for ourselves and different ways to be creative.   Katy and I would love to hear your take on creative mindfulness and how you implement it. #133: Using Yoga To Bring Mindfulness and Equanimity Into Your Life

A misunderstanding about meditation is that it calms your mind. But even after 20 years of practicing, a calm mind will still have days of chaos. The purpose of meditation is not to become calm but to create equanimity.  Though the words calm and equanimous are often used synonymously, there is a slight difference. Calmness can be compared to still waters, while equanimity is more like the sky. It's a container that holds all things.  The equanimous mind remains the same, no matter what happens. It contains all of your thoughts, emotions, and memories but does not react to them.  Similar to memory, mindfulness requires total presence and having full faculty of your senses. But while memories are rooted in the past, mindfulness is now. If you can learn to anchor the mind with mindfulness and yoga practice, you can learn to become equanimous. Last week I came across this very interesting research published on the psychology today website about worry. A clinical study done with people from 18-59 years old concluded that most people worry about the same things. The most popular categories for worrying are personal relationships, work, financial, aimless future, and lack of confidence. Around 75% of these worries revolve around situations that may happen right now or in the future... How to unlock yourself from the worry trap Earlier, I gave you a clue of what could be an excellent strategy to increase self-awareness about your worrying addiction. I mentioned how our mind spends more time worrying in the evening hours when you are in our bedroom. Consider paying more attention to what is going on in your mind. Listen to what your inner dialogue is talking about between 9 pm to 3 am. Focus and mindfully listen to what stories your mind is narrating at these crucial hours. Bring mindful awareness to your worries and use this question on your meditation Self-awareness is the simple exercise of just paying attention and noticing what is happening. Starting tonight, take a break and observe what your thoughts are saying. Use this meditation question: What is the content and ideas that my mind is focusing on? In this week’s episode, Sharon shares her own journey into mindfulness and meditation and how she has come to understand these two practices. She then offers up 5 simple ways for how to bring mindfulness into your everyday and how these simple tactics lay the groundwork for more in depth meditation. If you are a meditation-curious or ready to deepen an existing practice, the week’s episode is for you. “What is it that my awareness lacks? What am I hungry for? What diversions am I giving more attention to than my true self?” Ideas Shared Mindfulness vs. Meditation These two terms are often used interchangeably. Here is how Sharon sees the two: Mindfulness - The act of bringing an observer’s lens to your thoughts; quieting the mind by bringing focus to it. Meditation - Letting go out your thoughts and tapping into your inner being and in so doing connecting to the universal oneness of all things. 5 Simple Ways to Bring Mindfulness into Your Day Pay attention to your breath - Take 3 deep breaths and really allow yourself to notice the quality of each breath. Hold a receiving posture - Sit or stand with your palms up, shoulders back and chest open. Follow your thoughts - Sit down with both feet rooted into the ground and bring focus to your thoughts. Do not let the thoughts run the show; allow your attention to slow your thoughts down.  Appreciate the action you take - Bring attention to whatever you are doing. Be in the task and appreciate your ability to both do and notice what you are doing. Get uncomfortable with not doing - To find stillness, we often have to move through the discomfort of not choosing the distraction. This week's guided meditation is the formal version of the cornerstone mindfulness practice of mindful walking (also called walking meditation), which is great when paired after your formal sitting meditation practice. Mindful walking is one of the primary mindfulness practices and for good reason. Mindful walking is something we can do throughout each and every day as well as in a more formal setting (today's version). To walk mindfully is to touch the peace of the present moment with each step. It's a powerful practice and a personal favorite, so I'm happy to be covering it this week. Mindful walking, or walking meditation, is the practice of either counting one's steps or being mindful of the rising, swinging, and placing down of each step. As this guided meditation is on more of the formal practice, I'll be guiding by counting the steps (with plans to do more informal version of the meditation where you'll follow your steps in the near future). Also, don't forget to check out this week's talk, episode #20: Mindfulness at Work: How to Bring Mindfulness to the Workplace. Thank you for listening & let me know what you think. In the : Bring Mindfulness into Your Martial Arts Podcast Original Essay by Cameron Conaway Acknowledgements: I was working out on multiple assailant strategies. While I was sucking wind and recovering, Lynn took the time to tell me that Episode 27, "Talk on Qi gave her a lot to think about". Jean told posted that she had "attended our Harmonizing Sex Drive Workshop and it was the perfect reminder of taking care of yourself first and the rest will follow." Garner Fire Dept Event : http://garnerfire.com/2014_photos They raised $15,000 to help burn victims in the hospital. Say 'Thank You to a Fireman'. Announcements: * Program Announcements near the end. * Couple of edit issues in last episode because I wanted to make sure it got out on time.. Why did I put it out anyway? My Top Priority is to be as consistent as possible, just like in practice. Some may be better than others. The effort is to provide quality information first, (practice with good intent), be consistent as possible, then performance.. Reid went to see Bruce in Charlotte, and together they did the Reeling Silk Tai Chi with the Veterans. Yesterday during the Free Monday Meditation Class at 11:30, we did a meditation on 'Creating Room for Your Thoughts'. Reid feels that it will be great for the Veterans, so I will record some bumpers and edit for them. Will send it to you Reid and Bruce, probably through dropbox. I exchanged a few emails with Cameron and I asked if I could share the essay with you. I hope you find it as worthwhile as I did.
