Picking up from where we left off in our June show “Defending the Right to Boycott: Confronting the UK's Anti-BDS Bill”, (covered here in Al Jazeera) we'll be learning whether the UK government has indeed been paying attention to British-Palestinians who have been voicing their deep concerns about the moral and legal legitimacy of this Bill, or whether they have attempted to erase them from the discussion altogether, as some reporters have recently claimed. We'll also be taking a closer look at the trade union conferences just kicking off in the UK, as well as the upcoming party conferences to assess what the trajectory for advocacy around Palestinian rights in the UK at a time when it has never been more urgent to make space for Palestinians to be heard and lead from the front in discussions which affect them most.

When National Security Law was imposed in Hong Kong SAR in 2020, the UK government responded by opening up a bespoke visa scheme to facilitate the migration and settlement of Hong Kongers in the UK. Upheld by the UK's Home Office as evidence of the UK's ‘fair and generous' approach to immigration, on the surface it seems like an exception to the Hostile Environment. But what if all was not as it seems? In this episode, we explore the back story to this new visa, to ask the question what can the Hong Kong BN(O) visa tell us about Britain's borders past and present? Presenter Michaela Benson uncovers how Britain's present-day relationship to the people of Hong Kong sits in a longer history through which the Hong Kongers had their rights eroded. George Kalivis heads into the archives to uncover how the British government responded to earlier political uprisings in Hong Kong, the 1989 protests about the Tiananmen Square massacres. And they are joined by John Vassiliou, an immigration and nationality lawyer at Shepherd and Wedderburn, who explains more about the bespoke HK BN(O) visa scheme and why it means that this is pegged to a so-called ‘useless citizenship' status. You can access the full transcripts for each episode over on the Rebordering Britain and Britons after Brexit website. In this episode we cover … Britain's relationship to people of Hong Kong from the 1960s onwards The Hong Kong BN(O) visa Useless citizenships Quote When we think of a typical citizen of a country they usually have certain benefits like I described—and the main one is the right to live there—and a BN(O) citizen does not. They are not on their own, there are another four types of British citizenship status that are in a similar category to this and they've generally been described by courts as useless citizenship statuses in the past. — John Vassiliou Where can you find out more about the topics in today's episode? You can find out more about John and his work here. He tweets @john_vassiliou1. Read his informative pieces on the Free Movement Blog about the HK BN(O) visa including this overview of the scheme and this comment on Hong Kongers applying for political asylum in the UK. Read Michaela's thoughts about what the case of the Hong Kongers in British nationality legislation can tell us about the racialised politics of belonging in Britain. Here's the full piece and a blogpost with the key points if you are short on time … We also want to give some love to this fantastic piece by Jun Pang about how the Hong Kongers in the UK are positioned as ‘good migrants' and why this matters in the context of the new immigration plan. How often do you think about race? If you're white, chances are – rarely. That's because you're unlikely to be the only person in a room who looks like you. If you're Black, race defines your experience from the day you are born. The street you grow up in. The school you attend. The friends you make. The jobs you go for. We might say we don't see colour, but our skin marks every aspect of our lives. The recent Black Lives Matter protests shocked many into paying attention to the systemic racism endured by Black people for centuries. In the UK, we realised it was much closer to home than we wanted to believe. The same goes for our firm. October is Black History Month – an annual celebration of the history, achievements and contributions of Black people in the UK. It's a time to honour and celebrate Black Britishness. Black heroes. Black talent. Creativity. Drive. Passion. But it's also a time to question and learn. For this episode, two guests help us get under the skin of Black Britishness. They're both senior professionals in their chosen fields. We talk about what it was like getting their first job. Their experience in the workplace. Did they ever think they got the role because of their skin colour? Were they ever rejected because of it? What's been the proudest moment of their careers? But they're also just people. Who did they look up to as kids? When was the first time they experienced racism? Were they told they had to work twice as hard? Does it ever get tiring talking about race? Are they proud to be Black? And British? Tune in to find out: Why George mentioned his lockdown love handles How seeing the first Black British role models on TV impacted Sandra About the responsibility David feels being one of our few Black partners Why Sandra and David are both optimistic about the future Enjoyed the episode? What's it really like to be LGBT in Britain today?
This week we talk to British socialist David Renton about the history of Rock Against Racism and the Anti-Nazi League. RaR and the ANL were a cultural and protest movement against the rise of the National Front in Britain in the 1970’s. Renton contends that these movements played a decisive role in preventing the rise of fascism in Britain, while similar movements took root in France. David Renton is a British historian and activist, a member of the socialist group RS21 and author of the book, Never Again: Rock Against Racism and the Anti-Nazi League 1976-1982 (http://bit.ly/RentonANL). We talk to him about the importance of the contestation for culture, particularly around punk music, and the role that RaR played in that. He describes some of the key turning points of anti-fascist mobilization and the creation of the ANL. We discuss what lessons we can draw for the movement against a resurgent right today. In our opener, we talk about socialists Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as they prepare to take office. We discuss the ways in which they are challenging politics as usual, raising expectations and opening up possibilities, while also exploring the constraints imposed by the Democratic Party and how socialists can take advantage of this moment. Links for our interview: *You can buy David’s book here (http://bit.ly/RentonANL) *David also blogs at his website lives;running where he frequently discusses politics and especially the new movements against the right in Britain (http://bit.ly/LivesRunning) *In this piece re-published at Socialist Worker, David makes the case for a militant movement that directly confronts the fascists and examines different trajectories within the movement in Britain *Today’s episode is being released on December 10 as part of a contribution to the call for a day of action against fascism and racism (http://bit.ly/Dec10Action) Links for our intro: *You can listen to our assessment of AOC’s election victory in episode 17 of this podcast (http://bit.ly/BOREp17) *You can read analysis of the November elections at Socialist Worker by Todd Chretien (http://bit.ly/ChretienElections), Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor (http://bit.ly/KeeangaElections), Alan Maass (http://bit.ly/MaassElections) and the editorial staff (http://bit.ly/EditorialElections) *In episode 34 (http://bit.ly/LanceSelfa), we interviewed Lance Selfa about the midterm elections. Thanks for listening and don’t forget to share! The GenderGP Podcast What does it mean to be trans in Britain today? Dr. Helen Webberley: Hello, this is Dr. Helen Webberley. Welcome to our Gender GP Podcast, where we will be discussing some of the issues affecting the trans and non-binary community in the world today, together with my co-host Marianne Oakes, a trans woman herself, and our head of therapy. We’re going to talk today about what it means to be transgender in today’s world, in 2018 and beyond. I suppose that leads us on to the first concept, really. Marianne, help me out. How many gender identities can there possibly be? Someone said to me a while ago that there are infinite gender identities, and I was telling my son that, and he told me that if I ever said that publicly, I was going to have it ripped out and that kind of thing. And so, is it true? Can we have an infinite number of gender identities? What does it mean? Marianne Oakes: Personally, I think the simple answer to that is “yes”. The only reason I would say that is I had gender explained to me really simply by one of my clients in the therapy room. They were explaining to the dad, who was struggling with the concept of non-binary, that he sees the world as men, women, boys, girls. And he’s got his child there trying to explain, “Actually, dad, I’m not a girl.” So imagine that men are black, and women are white. They said to the dad, “Actually, I’m a funny colour grey. I’m not quite one or the other.” We are all shades of grey along that spectrum. If we were to divide that spectrum to finite segments, then yes, there will be an infinite amount of gender identities. I’m not sure there is an infinite amount of ways to describe those identities. That would be a different subject altogether. But even if you see what we would term a cis-woman, she could be wearing more masculine clothes or she could be wearing more feminine clothes. What shade of grey would she be? Likewise, for a cis-gender man, what does it even mean to be a man? What does masculinity mean? So yes, I think there is an infinite amount of gender identities. Is there an infinite amount of words to describe it? I’m not sure. Dr. Helen Webberley: I love that concept. It’s brilliant. If you think about it, that colour grey, which was talked about elegantly by your client in the therapy room, when the sun goes behind the cloud, that grey sort of changes a bit, which means that whatever shade of grey you are on the spectrum, it can also change with the day, with the month, with the feeling of support you have. It is not a static place on that spectrum. I wish we had a little bit more colour.
