Central authorities on Friday relaxed restrictions to allow residents in selected areas of Guangdong province to visit Hong Kong and Macao more frequently, just in time for the peak travel season.11月29日,中央政府决定放宽限制,允许广东省部分地区的居民更频繁地前往香港和澳门,正好赶上旅游旺季。This decision has been welcomed by various sectors in the two special administrative regions as a boon to tourist spending. Starting on Sunday, travel permits will be reinstated, enabling residents of Shenzhen to visit Hong Kong as often as they wish each year, with a maximum stay of seven days per visit, according to a statement from the National Immigration Administration. Beginning in January, residents of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin will also be eligible to apply for a similar multiple-entry permit for Macao. Residents of Zhuhai will then be able to obtain permits allowing them to visit Macao up to once a week for a maximum of seven days. In response, Macao's police force on Friday pledged to improve border crossing efficiency, noting that these measures would solidify Macao's status as a global tourism and leisure center while promoting regional integration. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong SAR expressed gratitude to the central government for the policy change. The spokesperson said this development is expected to boost the tourism, dining and retail sectors in the SAR. The new arrangements also allow individuals without hukou (household registration documents) but who hold Shenzhen residence permits to obtain multiple-entry travel permits. An official estimate indicates that the expansion will increase the number of eligible Shenzhen residents for multiple-entry permits to over 10 million. In 2009, the central government introduced a policy allowing Shenzhen residents to visit Hong Kong as often as desired within a one-year validity period as part of an initiative to support the global financial hub during the financial crisis at that time.2009年,中央政府出台了一项政策,允许深圳居民在一年有效期内任意访问香港,作为当时金融危机期间支持全球金融中心举措的一部分。However, the influx of mainland travelers quickly overwhelmed entry and exit checkpoints and urban centers, straining relations with locals. Some Shenzhen residents even exploited the permits for illicit smuggling activities, leading authorities to cap such crossings to once a week in 2015. The relaxation almost a decade later has been hailed by many as a "cardiac stimulant" for local businesses, with numerous observers recognizing the vital role that mainland consumers play in helping the business sector navigate challenging times. Peter Shiu Ka-fai, a Hong Kong legislator representing the wholesale and retail sector, told local media that the consumption patterns of mainland tourists have evolved over the years, and they are more inclined to explore various areas in depth rather than merely visiting established attractions, requiring local businesses to adapt accordingly. This relaxation of restrictions coincides with Hong Kong's efforts to attract more visitors through hosting concerts, exhibitions and other mega-events. Officials, including Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, have sought the central authority's support to restore the previous travel policy to facilitate these plans. Now with the relaxation just a few days away, Hong Kong SAR Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki instructed all departments at an internal conference on Thursday to collaborate and ensure the smooth operation of ports, tourism facilities and public transport to enhance travel experiences.28日,距离新政策实施仅有几天时,香港特区政务司司长陈国基在内部会议上指示各部门通力合作,确保港口、旅游设施和公共交通顺畅运行,以提升旅游体验。Dennis Lam Shun-chiu, a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress — the country's top legislature — said that this reinstatement is timely. He noted that various tourist-drawing events, including drone shows, fireworks displays, concerts and the New Year's countdown, are just around the corner. Since early this year, many restrictions have been eased to provide mainland residents with increased flexibility when visiting Hong Kong and Macao. Notably, 10 new cities across the nation have been added to the existing list of locations whose residents can now visit Hong Kong and Macao without the need to join tour groups. Additionally, the duty-free allowance for mainland residents returning from Hong Kong has been raised. The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong, on Friday recommended that Hong Kong authorities promote payment methods favored by mainland consumers, such as electronic payments and the digital RMB, and suggested exempting fees for cross-border transactions to encourage spending.29日,香港中华总商会建议香港当局推广内地消费者喜爱的支付方式,如电子支付和数字人民币,并建议推出免手续费跨境汇款以鼓励消费。Peng Peng, executive president of the Guangdong Society of Reform, said that the new travel policies related to Macao are highly beneficial for Hengqin's real estate sector, which is close to Macao. The new permit policy will attract talent to Hengqin and play a key role in promoting the integrated development of Macao and Hengqin," Peng said.“新的通行政策将吸引人才到横琴发展,对促进澳门和横琴的融合发展发挥了重要作用。”

China will reinforce the role of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as an offshore renminbi hub to bolster its efforts to steadily lift the global profile of the renminbi, a course that is significant for both China and the world economy, according to financial officials and experts. This would be a feasible option as China seeks to open its financial markets wider to overseas investors, while also forestalling the risks of any drastic fluctuations in cross-border capital flows that could threaten national security amid rising external uncertainties, they said. Huang Yiping, dean of Peking University's National School of Development, said, "With full capital account liberalization unlikely in the short term, China should consider developing the Hong Kong SAR into the largest offshore renminbi market.""In this way, although 'nonresidents', or international investors, cannot completely freely enter and exit the capital market of the Chinese mainland, they can freely trade and hold renminbi-denominated assets in the Hong Kong market. This can provide crucial support for internationalizing the renminbi," he said. Huang's words echoed the resolution adopted at the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, which vowed to promote high-standard opening-up of the financial sector, steadily and prudently advance the internationalization of the renminbi and develop offshore renminbi markets. In an article published in a book to interpret the resolution, Wang Jiang, executive deputy director of the office of the Central Financial Commission — which is responsible for top-level design of financial stability and development — underlined strengthening the function of the Hong Kong SAR as a hub for offshore renminbi business as one of the key means to promote financial opening-up. Tian Xuan, vice-dean of Tsinghua University's PBC School of Finance, said that Hong Kong's unique position as an international financial center should be further leveraged, citing that Hong Kong's advantages in terms of financial institutions, talent and infrastructure remain significant. However, Tian highlighted the need to appropriately handle the pace of financial opening-up and renminbi internationalization, especially regarding capital account liberalization."We need to continue opening up our capital markets. We still have a long way to go, but we must also learn from the lessons of other economies, particularly those in South America, that took overly aggressive steps that triggered financial chaos and even caused national security concerns." The resolution also stressed financial security. It said that as China opens wider to the outside world, the country needs to "strengthen financial security mechanisms "and promote the development of a homegrown, controllable cross-border payment system.《决议》还强调了财政安全。 In an exclusive interview with China Daily, Zhu Min, former deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, said China is gradually advancing renminbi internationalization."It will take a long way. But I think the world sees that a dominant US dollar is not necessarily a good thing for the whole world, because US monetary policy and fiscal policy may have a big impact on the dollar's value and capital movements," Zhu said."Having a more balanced force against the dollar is good for the whole world. So I think the renminbi will continue to internationalize to serve that role, not only for China, but for the whole world, and particularly for international financial architecture," he added. The renminbi has recently recovered against the dollar as investors seek diversification amid expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate cut and concerns over a US economic hard landing. The onshore renminbi came in at 7.2583 against the greenback on Monday afternoon, following a 557 basis point rebound on Thursday. The RMB Internationalization Index, or RII, a comprehensive measure of the currency's global use regarding trade settlements, financial transactions and official reserves, reached 6.32 at the end of 2023, Renmin University of China's International Monetary Institute said on Saturday.7月27日,中国人民大学国际货币研究所(International Monetary Institute)表示,人民币国际化指数(RII)综合考虑了人民币在贸易计价结算、金融交易和官方储备等方面执行国际货币职能的情况(数值越大表示国际化越强);截至2023年底,我国RII已达6.32。The figure was below the US dollar's 51.52 and the euro's 25.03, but exceeded the Japanese yen's 4.4 and the British pound's 3.76. The RII's full-year average rose 22.9 percent year-on-year to 6.27, highlighting the RMB's momentum as an emerging international currency due to its increasing use. RMB Internationalization Indexn.人民币国际化指数Renmin University of China's International Monetary Instituten.
Officials strongly condemned some Western politicians on Wednesday for criticizing Hong Kong's new national security law, saying the attacks cannot stop the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from achieving greater success.3月20日,香港官员就西方政客抹黑《维护国家安全条例草案》的言论发表强烈谴责,称这些言论不能阻止香港特别行政区取得进一步发展。The SAR will enforce the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance on Saturday after it was unanimously cleared by the Legislative Council on Tuesday. The law has been created to prevent and punish five types of acts endangering national security, including treason, theft of State secrets and espionage.3月19日,《维护国家安全条例草案》获得立法会一致通过,将于3月23日执行。 Some Western politicians have been critical of the ordinance, claiming that it will undermine Hong Kong's freedom. Among those who have been critical are David Cameron, the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom and Josep Borrell, high representative for foreign affairs and security policy of the European Union. The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said it is firmly opposed to some countries and organizations denigrating and smearing the SAR's national security ordinance.3月20日,中国外交部表示,坚决反对一些国家和组织抹黑抹黑香港国家安全条例。At the Foreign Ministry's regular news conference, spokesman Lin Jian said the ordinance is a milestone in the development of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong. It helps the city fulfill its constitutional responsibility of safeguarding national security, and further strengthens the security foundation for Hong Kong's development, Lin said. Lin stressed that any attack and smear on the ordinance is destined to be in vain. In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong refuted Cameron's remarks, emphasizing the new security law, legislated under Article 23 of the Basic Law, will not affect Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy, and will fully protect the normal activities of foreign institutions and personnel in the SAR.3月20日,外交部驻港特派员公署发言人发表严厉声明,驳斥卡梅伦的言论,强调根据基本法第二十三条制定的新国安法不会影响香港的高度自治并将全力保障外国机构和人员在特区的正常活动。The spokesperson noted that the Sino-British Joint Declaration does not give the UK any right to interfere in Hong Kong affairs after the city's return to the motherland in 1997. He urged the British politicians to give up the illusion of continuing to peddle colonial influence in the city, and stop interfering in the internal affairs of China and the SAR. In a separate statement, the commissioner's office urged the EU to face up to Hong Kong people's broad support for the legislation, saying the ordinance is set to provide strong legal protection for the city's high-quality development and opening-up, better safeguard the properties of local residents, boost the confidence of local and overseas investors, and create a safer, and a more convenient and efficient business environment. The HKSAR government too on Wednesday condemned some Western countries, organizations and politicians for continuously making slanderous, highly misleading and false statements on the ordinance. A spokesperson for the SAR government emphasized that the ordinance was broadly supported by various sectors in Hong Kong, helping the city effectively prevent, stop and punish acts that endanger national security. Chris Tang Ping-keung, the secretary for security, said that only those who want to undermine the city do not want Hong Kong to have a law to protect national security. Experts familiar with Hong Kong affairs also criticized the smear campaign. Grenville Cross, senior counsel and former director of public prosecutions of the Hong Kong SAR, said some Western politicians only view the ordinance as a stick to beat Hong Kong with. He pointed out that the primary allegation is that it threatened human rights. On the contrary, Cross said the ordinance spares no effort to protect human rights, which goes further than any law in other common law jurisdictions such as Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States. British political and international relations analyst Tom Fowdy said that there is a persistent view that the city cannot make national security laws but only accept Western backed political interference. Fowdy called the view "nonsensical", saying that only those who have attempted to weaponize the city against China violate the city's long-standing strengths. treason英 /ˈtriː.zən/ 美/ˈtriː.zən/n.叛国罪smear 英 /smɪər/ 美/smɪr/v.

Government officials and political heavyweights strongly condemned a United States report and so-called "hearing" that smeared Hong Kong's judicial system and threatened to sanction Hong Kong judges. They stressed that Hong Kong's judicial independence brooks no interference, and the malicious and despicable trick could not change the Chinese people's resolve to safeguard national security and ensure the sustained success of the "one country, two systems" principle. The US Congressional-Executive Commission on China released a report on Thursday and also held a "hearing", during which it criticized 29 Hong Kong judges and judicial officers who have handled national security-related cases, including the city's Chief Justice Andrew Cheung Kui-nung. The commission also demanded that the US government consider imposing sanctions on the judges. The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council dismissed on Sunday the US report's smearing of Hong Kong's judicial system, saying the central government firmly supports the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's judiciary in performing its duty in an independent and impartial manner, and never allows US politicians to interfere in the SAR's judicial independence. The office's spokesperson said the National Security Law for Hong Kong has helped the city restore social stability, uphold its rule of law and protect the rights and interests enjoyed by Hong Kong people and overseas investors. However, the spokesperson said, some US politicians have tried every means to interfere with Hong Kong's law enforcement and judicial works, in order to help those who endanger national security and the stability of Hong Kong escape responsibility for their crimes and to try to contain the development of the city and the nation. The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR said the report is another rude interference in the internal affairs of China and the Hong Kong SAR.The US politicians' attempts to obstruct the implementation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong, disrupt the judicial order in Hong Kong and interfere with the city's independent adjudication of judges is a blatant blasphemy against the spirit of the rule of law, the liaison office said.A spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR said no sanctions or pressure could change the firm determination of the Chinese side to safeguard the prosperity and stability of the Hong Kong SAR and ensure the sustained success of "one country, two systems".Foreign intimidation will only make the Chinese people even more united, and all foreign interference will only fall flat, the office said. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, the city's largest political group, said it firmly supports Hong Kong judges in continuing to perform their duties. The group also urged the Hong Kong government to take necessary measures to protect judges from external interference and safeguard the city's judicial system.Lawmaker Stanley Ng Chau-pei, who also chairs the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, the SAR's largest labor union, said the attempt by US politicians to interfere in Hong Kong's national security trials with threats will not affect Hong Kong people's resolve to safeguard national security, safeguard Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and uphold the Constitution, the Basic Law and the National Security Law for Hong Kong.Judicial英/dʒuːˈdɪʃəl/ 美/dʒuːˈdɪʃəl/adj.法庭的,司法的Security 英/sɪˈkjʊərəti/ 美/sɪˈkjʊrəti/n.安全
This episode features Dr Joyce Chung and Weilin Chen (School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, China). What is already known about the topic: End-of-life communication can improve patients' quality of life, ease the bereavement experience, raise care satisfaction and reduce the utilisation of aggressive and expensive medical care. Healthcare professionals' perceived barriers, such as fear of causing distress, impede the delivery of end-of-life conversations in a professional, sensitive and appropriate manner. The communication strategies available to healthcare professionals for discussing end-of-life issues with terminally ill patients and their families have not yet been systematically summarised. What this paper adds: This review systematically examines, summarises and presents recommended end-of-life communication strategies for healthcare professionals. It organises these communication strategies into seven themes that should be considered when delivering end-of-life conversations. This review highlights that further research is needed to explore patients' and families' perspectives on healthcare professionals' end-of-life communication strategies; and available strategies in non-Anglo-Saxon countries. Implications for practice, theory or policy: The valuable strategies outlined in this review will assist and support healthcare professionals when having end-of-life conversations with their patients. Further training and education plans should be developed and implemented based on the study findings. Further research is needed to explore patients' and their families' experiences and views on end-of-life communication strategies used by healthcare professionals; and practical strategies to use in non-Anglo-Saxon countries. "It's often been said that if Hong Kong people have a defining ideology, it is the rule of law." This is written on the website of the Hong Kong SAR government. As the city marks the 25th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule, how has Hong Kong's rule of law developed? What challenges does the city's judiciary system still face?
President Xi Jinping stressed on Monday the decisive role of the new electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in enabling various sectors to jointly contribute to the growth of the city, saying that the system must be treasured and upheld over the longer term.Xi conveyed Beijing's full recognition and support to John Lee, the newly appointed chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR, during a meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.Lee, the former chief secretary for administration of the Hong Kong SAR government, scored a sweeping win in the election on May 8 and is set to take office on July 1, after being formally appointed by the State Council this month. The president said the new electoral system has played a decisive role in ensuring that patriots administer Hong Kong and guaranteeing that Hong Kong residents can exercise their rights to run the city.He noted that elections held under the new electoral system, including the election of the Election Committee, the Legislative Council and the chief executive, have all proved successful, adding that the system is a political system and a system of democracy that is in keeping with the "one country, two systems" principle, the reality of Hong Kong and its needs for development.Xi also spoke highly of Lee, commending him for his unwavering patriotism, love for Hong Kong, and for assuming his duties in different posts to contribute to national security and the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.As Hong Kong is set to mark the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland in July, Xi said the practice of "one country, two systems", despite the challenges it faced, has been a universally recognized success. He underscored that the central government's commitment to comprehensively and faithfully implementing "one country, two systems" has never wavered, and will remain unwavering.Xi said that Hong Kong has already completed a major turnaround from chaos to stability and is now in a critical period in transitioning from stability to prosperity.Xi added that he believes the new SAR government will demonstrate new vitality in its governance and the region will write a new chapter in its growth.Hong Kong's economy contracted by 4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of the year, as the SAR was hit hard by a fifth wave of COVID-19, which also resulted in cross-boundary transport disruption.Premier Li Keqiang, who granted Lee a certificate of appointment at a meeting on Monday, said the central government will extend full support to the chief executive and the new SAR government in exercising law-based governance, developing the economy and improving the public's well-being.He highlighted the need to amplify the strengths of the region and enable the city to better integrate itself into national development, and to maintain its long-term prosperity and stability. The central government and the motherland will always serve as strong underpinning for Hong Kong in tackling various difficulties, risks and challenges, he added. The premier expressed his hope that the new SAR government can unite the various sectors of society, proactively respond to the concerns of society and keep improving its governance capacity. It is important for the SAR to consolidate its traditional strengths, bolster its comprehensive competitiveness, steadily enhance its position as a center for international finance, aviation and trade, and expedite its efforts to develop an international hub for innovation, science and technology, he said.He called for continuous efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, improve the public's well-being and solve problems related to the interests ofthe general public and offer solutions to the major concerns of the people.Lee told the premier that he will live up to the trust of the central government and the expectations of Hong Kong people. He pledged to make all-out efforts to seek growth for the SAR and happiness for its residents, and promote the region's long-term prosperity and stability.

When National Security Law was imposed in Hong Kong SAR in 2020, the UK government responded by opening up a bespoke visa scheme to facilitate the migration and settlement of Hong Kongers in the UK. Upheld by the UK's Home Office as evidence of the UK's ‘fair and generous' approach to immigration, on the surface it seems like an exception to the Hostile Environment. But what if all was not as it seems? In this episode, we explore the back story to this new visa, to ask the question what can the Hong Kong BN(O) visa tell us about Britain's borders past and present? Presenter Michaela Benson uncovers how Britain's present-day relationship to the people of Hong Kong sits in a longer history through which the Hong Kongers had their rights eroded. George Kalivis heads into the archives to uncover how the British government responded to earlier political uprisings in Hong Kong, the 1989 protests about the Tiananmen Square massacres. And they are joined by John Vassiliou, an immigration and nationality lawyer at Shepherd and Wedderburn, who explains more about the bespoke HK BN(O) visa scheme and why it means that this is pegged to a so-called ‘useless citizenship' status. You can access the full transcripts for each episode over on the Rebordering Britain and Britons after Brexit website. In this episode we cover … Britain's relationship to people of Hong Kong from the 1960s onwards The Hong Kong BN(O) visa Useless citizenships Quote When we think of a typical citizen of a country they usually have certain benefits like I described—and the main one is the right to live there—and a BN(O) citizen does not. They are not on their own, there are another four types of British citizenship status that are in a similar category to this and they've generally been described by courts as useless citizenship statuses in the past. — John Vassiliou Where can you find out more about the topics in today's episode? While counterfeit goods are available almost everywhere online and offline, manufacturing and exportation is highly monopolized by a handful of countries. In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security reported seizures of counterfeit goods at U.S. borders have increased tenfold over the past two decades, with nearly 90 percent of seized products in 2018 arriving from mainland China or Hong Kong SAR, China. The most recent trade deal between the United States and China, in 2020, requires both countries to combat the prevalence of counterfeit or pirated goods, advocating for effective enforcement actions when private platforms fail to prevent intellectual property (IP) infringement. What do the counterfeiting dynamics look like today, and have they evolved over recent years? What is the role played by China? How are recent infrastructure projects, and particularly the new Silk Road network of trade routes connecting China and other regions, changing the conversation? The guest of this new episode of Brand&New, Toe Su Aung, is the co-founder and director of Elipe Limited, a consultancy firm based in London, UK, that provides strategic government relations, corporate affairs, and communication services, including advising companies on the protection of their intellectual property. Before setting up this company, Ms. Aung spent 20 years at British American Tobacco, where she carried out a variety of roles, including leading the legal and corporate affairs teams on IP protection and policy issues, as well as driving global strategies for addressing illicit trade. In addition, she has been an active INTA member for more than 15 years, including serving as the Association's president in 2013. Currently, she is chair of the INTA Foundation. Every two weeks, on Tuesday, Brand & New gives the floor to inspiring individuals, with a 360-degree vision, to help brand owners, intellectual property lawyers, and marketing and finance professionals (and beyond!) stay curious and agile in an ever-evolving business environment. Malaysian factories suffered shutdowns in June due to the rise in Delta variant cases and, as of now, are still not operating at full capacity. Our PMI survey results showed a close-to-record decline in output and new orders. This does not bode well for Malaysian manufacturing, employment, and much needed relief in supply chain delays. But is it all dismal? Perhaps new fiscal policies in Hong Kong SAR offer some hope for recovery? Join our PMI economists as they discuss these issues and more. Here is the news.Chinese scientists are expanding the capacity of an underground facility designed to detect elusive dark matter particles. The scientists are still searching for evidence to prove the existence of the hypothetical dark matter, an invisible substance thought to account for over a quarter of the universe&`&s mass-energy balance. The Jinping Underground Laboratory started operating in 2010. The laboratory is located 2,400 meters under a mountain in Sichuan Province. It features a store of xenon, one of the few materials that interact with dark matter. There are also cosmic rays which interfere with attempts to observe dark matter that generally cannot penetrate to such a depth underground.Researchers at the laboratory said they have started a new phase of experiment. The lab now stores 300 kilograms of xenon, an expansion from the 50 kilograms in previous experiment. In the future, the total amount of xenon stored in the lab will be increased to a number of tons, but it will depend on when the research funding is in place. The new experiment will last around a year, and will go further on the way to find dark matter signals. But the researchers said they may need to keep up their current fast pace if China is to win the race in this sector. International competition in the hunt for dark matter is fierce. Many countries are building larger detection equipment with cutting-edge technology. This is Special English. The bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao has moved a step closer to completion as two main bridge structures have been connected.Macao&`&s legislature has described the connection as a milestone for the world-class project; but said there will still be many challenges before the project is finished.By early July, 80 percent of a 7-km tunnel has been completed. A full-scale effort can now begin on the bridge deck pavement and traffic engineering. The 55-km bridge is comprised of the offshore bridge and tunnel, boundary crossing facilities in Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao, as well as routes connecting the three cities. The main structure of the bridge is made up of the underwater tunnel and a bridge spanning 23 kilometers. Artificial islands will be built at both ends of the tunnel.According to the authority, the amount of iron used in the main structure alone weighs around 400,000 metric tons, enough for around 60 Eiffel Towers in Paris. The completion of the Hong Kong section of the bridge, built independently by the Hong Kong SAR government, was postponed for a year to the end of 2017, after it was reported that the artificial islands had shifted between six and seven meters in September. This is Special English.Earthquake monitoring stations across China are making use of nature to supplement their man-made early warning systems.Researchers have found that many species of animals and birds behave abnormally in the buildup to a large quake.Although odd behavioral displays do not necessarily mean a tremor is on the way, they can be a good indicator. That&`&s according to Sun Delei, deputy chief of the quake monitoring and forecasting department at the Earthquake Bureau in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.Sun&`&s bureau designated the Xinjiang Ancient Ecological Garden as an earthquake monitoring station on June 16, bringing the number of such centers in the city to 28.It was chosen because it is home to a large number of animals, including the Ferghana horse. Most of China&`&s earthquake monitoring stations keep animals and birds on site, including horses, pigs, dogs and parrots.Keepers at each center record the animals&`& behavior daily, with any abnormalities reported and studied to find out if they relate to an upcoming quake. Before the magnitude-4.2 quake in Urumqi on December 24, more than 60 parakeets that had been asleep suddenly jumped down from their perches, and the parrots were squawking for almost 30 minutes. The development of monitoring stations was stepped up by the China Earthquake Administration in the wake of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan that left more than 69,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands injured. You&`&re listening to Special English. The embryo was implanted into her womb in November at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. The woman suffered from blocked fallopian tubes and began trying to get pregnant in the Shanghai hospital in 1998 through IVF, or in vitro fertilization. She had three failed implantations, one with a fresh embryo and two with frozen ones.At the beginning of last year, she went to the hospital again and had the embryo implanted.Frozen embryos are stored in liquid nitrogen at minus 196 degrees Celsius. Shanghai health department said in 2013 that a medical institution should keep a client&`& embryos for no more than five years. However hospitals usually have to store the embryos for much longer because most clients do not ask to halt the service. This is Special English.Four chronic illnesses, namely cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease, topped the causes for premature deaths in Beijing.A report released by the Beijing Health and Family Planning Commission said it was the first time a health department has released the premature mortality rate, defined as someone who dies before the age of 70. An official at the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that when a person dies at 40 years old, he or she is considered to have lost 30 potential years of life. The premature mortality rate is a measurement that gives more weight to the death of younger people; and it could be a guide to the health department to take a preventive action. Of the four causes of premature death, cancer was listed at No 1. It contributed to 27 percent of all deaths in Beijing last year, an increase of 4 percent over 2014. The report also found that lung cancer, colorectal and liver cancers were the top three that led to death in Beijing last year. The report said that what calls for special attention is that thyroid cancer has seen a significant growth among women in Beijing. In the past ten years, thyroid cancer among women in Beijing climbed from 2 to 15 per 100,000 people. The event was held by the World Economic Forum and also known as the Annual Meeting of the New Champions.Kevin Chen spent most of the event introducing his "RoboBees" to curious visitors to the Exploration Zone. The tiny and light machines, roughly the shape of a bee, can fly and perch by flapping their wings 120 times per second, rather than using blades, as most unmanned aerial vehicles do.Chen, a Chinese PhD candidate at Harvard University, used artificial muscles custom-made from carbon-fiber sheets to power the RoboBees. They can be used to spread pollen or search for people buried after disasters.RoboBees were not the only animalistic drone at Summer Davos. Also on show were robots imitating the movement of snakes and spiders and designed to assume search and rescue tasks. One of the most popular exhibits at the Exploration Zone was a brain-machine interface developed by San Francisco firm Emotiv. When a user puts on a headset, his or her brainwaves are linked wirelessly to a small white ball and can light it up with different colors. Testers at the zone were able to move the balls with their minds. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Liu Yan in Beijing. You can access the program by logging on to newsplusradio.cn.
