I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast today is the renowned British artist, Barbara Walker. Born in Birmingham, where she lives and works today, Walker is hailed for her intimate paintings of everyday life, and intricate drawings that not only show power dynamics in Old Master Paintings, but give voice to histories that are all too often erased. From works on paper to paintings on canvas, and large-scale charcoal wall drawings, Walker's work, no matter their scale, is full of empathy, depth, and emotion. Some tell us stories about the state of affairs in Britain, whereas others are much more personal – in the early 2000s, she made her son the subject of her work – which get to the heart of the brokenness in our society, and look at situations from both an artistic and motherly gaze. Research is at the heart of Walker's work, and she frequently goes into public archives, such as for her incredible series, Shock and Awe, which highlighted the contribution of Caribbean servicemen and women serving in the British Army from 1914 to the present day. As well as “Vanishing Point”, which so movingly – and powerfully – explores the visibility and invisibility of Black subjects in Western European collections in our museum collections. Drawing in the Black figures while obscuring the dominant white subjects, Walker encourages the viewer to consider other perspectives beyond the ones that have become the so-called ‘default' in these institutions. But she is also interested in the unknown – as she says: As she says, “I'll go into archives looking for the backstories behind events, individuals or paintings, but I never know what I'm going to find. Making art is about curiosity and it's the same in the archive – I love playing in the unknown.” Very excitingly, a major survey of her work is currently on view at the Whitworth Museum in Manchester, in including her Turner Prize nominated group of portraits, Burden of Proof, a poignant response to the Windrush Scandal – and a newly commissioned printed wallpaper inspired by the Whitworth's collection, that continues her representation of the Windrush generation. -- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield

The journey of the Empire Windrush that docked in Essex with 1,027 passengers & at least two stowaways on 21st June 1948 has come to define a whole generation of people who arrived in Britain for two decades from the Caribbean until the 1970s. The 802 Caribbean citizens onboard were the first of 500,000 Commonwealth citizens who settled in Britain having been invited to help rebuild the "mother country". Despite having equal rights to British citizenship most faced discrimination, prejudice and abuse. Many had fought for Britain in the war just years earlier and yet when they arrived were often denied jobs, housing and access to public spaces like pubs and dancehalls. But communities among new settlers thrived, arrivals brought with them a rich heritage that shaped British culture from music and literature to food and sport. Communities pooled their resources to buy houses, set up community centres, services and support networks and fought for the rights they were promised. In 2018, the rights of the Windrush Generation entered the news again when they and their descendants became the targets of mistreatment by the UK government, resulting in the denial of their rights, deportation threats, and significant harm to their lives and communities. Dan is joined for the 75th anniversary of Windrush Day by Dr Juanita Cox, who is a research fellow on Nationality, Identity and Belonging at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. She unravels the long history of the Windrush Generation, their struggles and impact on Britain and the scandal with help from the voices of that generation themselves, recorded as part of her oral history project, ‘The Windrush Scandal in a Transnational and Commonwealth Context‘.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore.Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world-renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsley, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more.Get 50% off your first 3 months with code DANSNOW. In today's episode we speak with filmmaker Sonita Gale, about her award-winning documentary film Hostile.    Sonita tells us how Britain's "hostile environment" stretches much further back than 2012, when then home secretary Theresa May coined the term, and is rooted in the British Empire.    We hear how successive governments — both Labour and Conservative — have created an inhumane system for migrants and refugees in the UK and how this has affected the people in her film.    She also tells us how these dehumanising policies lead to the Windrush Scandal, and how they link with the NHS crisis, workers' rights, poverty, and the government's anti-protest laws.     ---Get in touch--- Twitter: @FleetCivil Mastodon: @civilfleet@kolektiva.social info@civilfleet.com civilfleet.com   Support:  ko-fi.com/civilfleet   ---Show Notes---   For more on Sonita Gale's documentary, see here: hostiledocumentary.com   If you're in the UK, you can watch the film online here: tinyurl.com/569sfdd7   If you're outside the UK, then check here for more information on how to watch it: https://www.hostiledocumentary.com/watch-the-film/    See the trailer for Hostile here: tinyurl.com/34me88cv    You can follow Hostile on Twitter here: @hostiledoc   And follow Hostile on Instagram here: instagram.com/hostiledoc   For anyone outside the UK that doesn't know what the Home Office is, it is similar to the Ministry of the Interior in much of Europe, or the Department for Homeland Security in the US.    The head of the UK Home Office (called the Home Secretary) is Suella Braverman. Before her, it was Priti Patel. Both are mentioned in the podcast.    Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Theresa May and David Cameron were all former Conservative Prime Ministers. Members of the Conservative party are often referred to as Tories, and the party as The Tory Party.    Theresa May was the Home Secretary in 2012. She coined the term Hostile Environment in 2012. Date: 6 October 2022 Time: 1-2pm About the lecture: Between 1948 and 1973, around 500,000 people arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries, answering the call for workers to take jobs in the newly-formed NHS and other sectors affected by Britain's post-war labour shortage. In 2017, news began to surface that hundreds of Commonwealth citizens of the ‘Windrush generation' had been wrongly detained, deported and denied legal rights. They endured lost employment, housing and livelihoods, and were forcibly separated from their families. Dr Rochelle Burgess is now leading The Ties That Bind, the first study to map the mental health impacts of the Windrush scandal on those directly affected and their wider families. Over the course of six months, the project will record the experiences of those affected and document evidence that he team hopes will improve awareness of the ongoing traumas caused by the scandal and motivate policy action around mental health support for victims, families and communities. The absence of attention to the mental health needs of Windrush scandal survivors and their families is a huge gap that must be addressed. This project takes initial steps to raising awareness and discussion of the importance of these issues. In this lecture, Dr Burgess will give an insight into the experiences of Windrush communities and the work of the study. About the speaker: Dr Rochelle Burgess, Associate Professor in Global Health and Deputy Director of the UCL Centre for Global Non-Communicable Diseases, at the Institute for Global Health at UCL.

A Decade ago, the Former Prime Minister Theresa May introduced the most draconian internal border controls on people who she thought were living in Britain without permission. This onerous policy and accompanying legislation resulted in what we now know as the Windrush Scandal. British citizens, particularly those from former colonies were caught up in papers please checks at GP Practices, DWP Offices, in the NHS and landlords became border guards, mandated to verify documents demonstrating a right to stay in the country. Schools were checking children's documents. It was a horrendous decade of state-directed discrimination which resulted in the deportation of citizens and ultimately the resignation of the then Home Secretary Amber Rudd. Maya Goodfellow an Academic and Author of Hostile Environment- How migrants became scapegoats joins us to provide her analysis and reflections on this architecture of oppression. She is candid and forthright. Her analysis lays bare how discrimination is sewn into Britain's statutory landscape.

Through dogged reporting in The Guardian, Amelia Gentleman showed that British residents and citizens who had arrived from the Caribbean in the 1950s and 60s had been mistakenly classified as unauthorized immigrants. That came to be known as the Windrush Scandal. Three years on, I caught up with Amelia Gentleman ahead of Windrush Day to talk about its aging victims, the compensation scheme and the Home Office's promises of reform. And in the waning days of the EU settlement scheme, we ask: Just as the Windrush generation was caught out by the end of free movement in the empire, could the Brexit generation be Britain's next immigration scandal? 00:23 Intro02:42 Amelia Gentleman's career story04:20 The Windrush scandal: a primer08:14 Malice, incompetence or both?10:49 People screaming into the void14:42 When austerity and the hostile environment meet17:31 Individual cases were solved, but systemic issues ignored19:51 How these stories became "The Windrush Scandal"25:29 Has the compensation scheme held its promises?29:08 Could the EU Settlement Scheme be the next Windrush scandal?35:53 How do you relate to a country that has turned its back on you?44:07 Outro

In a week where: Floyd Mayweather robbed you lot again. United Airlines is running back supersonic flight. In the Sarah Everard case, PC Wayne Couzens pleads guilty to kidnap and rape. The TV BAFTA Awards happened.  An Italian Artist Auctioned Off an ‘Invisible Sculpture' for $18,300. In Music: (5:45) Drill music has taken a meteoric rise since its beginnings early last decade. But as it became a global phenomenon, it began to evolve exponentially. In the first of two Life segments: (26:19) America's obsession with guns is fascinating as much as it is depressing. But getting past how Americans refuse to do the simple things, America's attachment to guns, like a lot of things with America, ties back to slavery. In the 2nd Life segment: (37:29) The anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre came & went this past week. Which gave way to me seeing the classic "Tank Man" photo. So, in wondering what happened to him, I found a story that gave me the entire oral history of the photo itself.Lastly, in Film/TV: (47:24) Anthony Bryan, one of many survivors of the Windrush Scandal, was the case study for the outstanding one-off film "Sitting In Limbo" that recently won a TV BAFTA. But when he could be jubilant about the win, the Home Office continue to disrespect him.Thank you for listening! The UK relies on the bravery and sacrifice of members of the UK Armed Forces drawn from across the Commonwealth yet charges them thousands to continue to live here when they leave. This has to end.Currently when Commonwealth personnel leave the UK Armed Forces and wish to apply to continue to live in the country they have served for years, they face thousands of pounds of fees to do so.A Service leaver with a partner and two children will be presented with a bill of almost £10,000 to continue to live in the UK, despite their years of sacrifice and service on behalf of our nation. Exorbitant immigration fees are no way to say thank you for their Service, and risk pushing commonwealth personnel into poverty just for wanting stability as they leave Service.Without leave to remain, UK Armed Forces veterans are cut off from being able to access employment or state support, leaving them and their families reliant on charitable funds or facing repatriation to their country of origin.Windrush generation families have been condemned to uncertainty, lost jobs, lost homes and even been forced to leave the country. Now we find that this is going on again and at the same time every year the Government has a target of 1350 people from the Commonwealth to join the armed forces. No-one promised them a home in Britain but they are doctors, nurses, skilled people with children born in Britain who after years could be forced to leave this country. PLEASE SIGN UP AND SUPPORT THE BRITSH LEGION CAMPAIGN, if someone can die for a country surely they should not have to pay to live in that country.

This session examines how Britain's colonial and postcolonial history has shaped its understanding of citizenship. Citizenship can be understood as membership of a political community. As such, it cannot be separated from wider political projects of nation and empire. The session shows how colonial and postcolonial immigration shaped the development of what we now call British citizenship, and how national citizenship in Britain is inseparable from postcolonial conceptions of identity and belonging. The session explores how citizenship was introduced into UK law and traces its evolution in response to postcolonial immigration. It concludes with some reflections on contemporary legacies, including the Windrush Scandal.   Reading Gentleman, Amelia. 2019. The Windrush Betrayal: Exposing the Hostile Environment. Both the Windrush scandal and the Grenfell fire raise urgent questions for sociologists, and for people concerned about tackling racism more broadly. Both remind us that racism is not just about individuals being intolerant, prejudiced, or bigoted, but about the social and institutional structures that organise who is entitled to what. In this lecture, I invite us to ask some questions about racism, rights and exclusion – particularly in relation to the history and contemporary dynamics of immigration control. It is by asking who is a member of the nation, who is excluded, how this changes over time, and what can be done to those denied membership, that we can develop critical methodologies for studying racism in anti-immigrant times. He's just created one of the finest dramas of 2020, Sitting In Limbo, which airs on BBC One at 8.30pm on Monday June 8 (available thereafter on BBC iPlayer). It's based on his brother's experience of being detained and threatened with deportation during the Windrush Scandal. It's a film I've been thinking about for weeks.I really enjoyed my conversation with Stephen, which we recorded a few weeks ago. We chat about his film and writing something so personal. Stephen talks about how he got his brother on board and how Anthony has dealt with the long-term effects of going through this traumatic experience. We talk about scenes that involve video chat and how they've taken on a whole new meaning in the current climate. And we, of course, wade into the usual lockdown chat with a telly recommendation that harks back to a previous podcast guest. The people effected by the Windrush Scandal are still seeking compensation, and the damning report released just a few weeks ago has not received the attention it deserves. Please write to your local MP (use this handy tool: https://www.writetothem.com) to encourage the report to be discussed in more detail, and please spread the word about Sitting In Limbo because it's an eye-opening account into how this scandal destroyed people's lives. It's two weeks until the UK general election so we talked about that. This week we address some common excuses people make not to engage politically (tldr: "If you don't have to think about politics, check your f*cking privilege!"). We talk about the UN's damning report on poverty in the UK that exposes how much damage the Conservative Government has done in the last decade. We discuss the Conservative Party's shocking "FactCheckUK" Twitter deception and the moral vacuum that is Boris Johnson as his lies become ever bolder. Then there's part one of a discussion of the Labour Party. ---- This Week's Links ----[1] Politics Unboringed - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfxy4_sBQdxzZNqvVQXcBPvsl1Zgzy2-q[2] See people’s voting record - https://www.theyworkforyou.com/[3] Caroline Lucas - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroline_Lucas [4] The Democracy Club - https://democracyclub.org.uk/ [5] Brexit Party Stands Down - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/11/brexit-party-will-not-contest-317-tory-seats-nigel-farage-says[6] Remaniacs podcast - https://audioboom.com/channel/remainiacs-podcast[7] UN Poverty Report recording - https://grandpodcast.com/un-poverty-report-2018.html[8] Rutger Utopia for Realists - https://amzn.to/33HepG3 [9] Top Boy Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80217669[10] Windrush Scandal -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windrush_scandal [11] Tories fake twitter account - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/nov/20/twitter-accuses-tories-of-misleading-public-in-factcheck-row[12] “There are no press here” - Boris Johnson’s lies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYZswb7wCmA [13] Drag Race UK - https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p07kt8b4/rupauls-drag-race-uk---- Credits ----Talking is by Ivanka Majic and Michael ForrestMusic and editing by http://michaelforrestmusic.comMusic available on Apple Music | Spotify | Amazon | Google Play | Bandcamp---- Support Us ----Buy our mug! https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/672419524/grand-podcast-mugPaypal Donation: https://paypal.me/grandpodcastPatreon: https://patreon.com/grandpodcastRestaurants Brighton Jobs: https://restaurantsbrighton.co.uk/jobs iOS Apps by Good To Hear: https://apps.apple.com/gb/developer/good-to-hear/id501992448---- Follow us on Twitter ----https://twitter.com/ivankahttps://twitter.com/michaelforresthttps://twitter.com/PodcastGrand---- Grand Podcast Library ----Find links to everything we've mentioned on the podcast at http://grandpodcast.com/library---- Find us on Facebook ----https://www.facebook.com/grandpodcast See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Guardian reporter Amelia Gentleman describes how she uncovered the so-called Windrush scandal – the wrongful detention and deportation of scores of British citizens whose families came to the UK from the Caribbean in the late 1940s and 50s to help rebuild post-war Britain. Amelia’s reporting led ultimately to the resignation of the Home Secretary, but more importantly, forced the government to loosen its hostile environment for migrants. Amelia was speaking at an Investigative Journalism conference at Newcastle University hosted by the Civic Journalism Lab in association with the Centre for Investigative Journalism.

Papers destroyed by the Home Office. Forced out of work. Denied cancer treatment. Held in detention. Deported. Those are just a few of the terrible stories we’ve heard about the treatment of the Windrush generation over the past few months. We’ve had a change of Home Secretary, but will there be a change in policy? The government set up a ‘Windrush taskforce’ in April – but will it right these wrongs? And what does the ‘hostile environment’ policy say about the UK’s difficult relationship with its own history? This week, Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Omar Khan, director of the race equality think tank, the Runnymede Trust, and writer and researcher Maya Goodfellow, who is writing a book about the immigration debate in Britain. On this week's World View podcast, London Editor Denis Staunton reports on the appointment of Conservative MP Sajid Javid as Home Secretary following the resignation of Amber Rudd. The son of Pakistani immigrants, Mr Javid has promised action on the Windrush immigration targets scandal that led to the exit of his predecessor. Described as unsentimental, a Thatcherite and a man prone to recitations of Ayn Rand, his appointment should take some of the poison out of the crisis for the Prime Minister but weakens the Soft Brexit side of her Cabinet. It comes as the Conservatives suffered another major defeat on Brexit in the House of Lords on Monday night. Also on the podcast: In Spain, thousands have protested against a decision by a court in Pamplona to absolve five men of rape, in a case that has garnered international attention and ignited the country's MeToo movement. Guy Hedgecoe reports on the details of the story, concerning the attack of an 18-year-old woman during the San Fermines bull-running festival in the city in the summer of 2016.
