In episode 169 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with journalist Natalie Morris. Since we first chatted in JCIP #41, Natalie has left The Metro and now works freelance. She has also written her first book ‘Mixed/Other' since then too. In this episode we discuss her decision to go freelance, an exploration of the key themes of the book through a mental health lens and leaving behind the 'Sunday scaries'. Unfortunately, since we last spoke, Natalie also lost her father Tony, a beloved broadcaster and journalist in his own right to cancer in August 2020. We discuss that journey of grief she, her sister and her mum have gone on since his passing and we celebrate the brilliant, loving and larger-than-life character her dad was to so many people, including Natalie. Welcome back to another episode of The Grief Gang podcast. This week I'm speaking with Natalie Morris, Mancunian journalist and author of Mixed/Other, a non-fiction exploration of the joys, complexities and nuances that come with having mixed heritage.Natalie's father, Tony Morris, the well known & loved newsreader of Granada reports and BBC North West died in August of 2020 after being diagnosed with Kidney cancer in 2019. Leaving not only a bereft Natalie & her sister Rebecca behind, but in fact, a nation. Natalie and I speak in this episode on what it is like to lose such an adorned person in the public eye, how the outpour of a nation feeling this collective grief brought great comfort to her. Having hundreds & thousands of people come forward, sharing stories of her special dad. In Natalie's own words, it's set the bar high for future bereavements in her life!In touch with Natalie's book, we speak on losing connections to identity & heritage when that key person who connected them dies. With Tony being Natalie & her sisters main link to their Jamaican lineage, what & how does that look like now he's gone? Natalie shares beautifully a recent trip she took back earlier this year to Jamaica and that feeling of being home. I really loved this conversation with Natalie and I think you will too. Grief can be attached to so much more than just a person and I think this episode really tells that. Welcome to Time To Talk. Passing. Fetishisation. Colourism. Mixed race identity. These are the topics I have the pleasure of speaking to my friend Natalie Morris about this week on the show. Her book, Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality In Modern Britain. The book comes at an essential time, especially in Black History Month where it can bring up very strong feelings of exclusion for mixed race black people when entering the conversation. Interestingly enough, out in cinemas this week is Passing - the new film written and directed by Rebecca Hall, starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson about African-Americans who had skin color light enough to be perceived as "white" - which is known as ‘Passing'. Gemma spoke to Rebecca Hall – who's own Grandfather ‘passed' as white - about the movie which is out in cinemas on October 27th and will be on Netflix on November 10th - and is based on the 1929 novel by Nella Larsen. We do have an in depth conversation about what it means to ‘pass' especially today in the age of Meghan and Harry; the identities of mixed race people; fetishisation from within and without the Black community, and what books Natalie wants to share with us this week. Natalie and I have worked together as journalists before, and she is deputy lifestyle editor at the Metro covering race, mental health, women in sport and women in the work place. She has a column called Mixed Up on Metro.co.uk. She hails from Manchester, and is doing the work to make the newsroom a much more inclusive place. Find Natalie on Instagram and Twitter I do hope you enjoy the episode. Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe, and share far and wide. —— Some NEWS. Natalie shares with us the process behind publishing her book on such a strong discussion around race and identity, her father's legacy and work ethic, and the strong need all newsrooms need to implement more than ever before when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Jeanette Winterson talks about her new essay collection which covers 200 years of women and science, from Mary Shelley to AI. She asks what love, caring, sex and attachment will look like when humans form connections with non-human helpers teachers, sex-workers, and companions? And what will happen to our deep-rooted assumptions about gender? Will our own bodies be enhances by biological and neural implants making us trans human and keeping us fitter, younger and connected? When Ena Miller gave birth to her baby called Bonnie just over a year ago - she expected to receive the standard comments..."Oh she's so beautiful, aww look at her little nose, she's so cute, aww what a big baby..." She did get those, but she also got negative remarks from friends and strangers about the colour of her baby's skin. Ena realised she was not alone and went to meet two other mothers Fariba and Wendy to talk about their experiences and ask for their advice. Colourism, which is also called shadism or skin tone bias, is prejudice in which people of colour with light skin are privileged over those with darker skin. Colourism can occur both within and between racialised groups. Natalie Morris, journalist and the author of Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality in Modern Britain and Dr Aisha Phoenix, Social Justice lecturer at King's College London discuss the history of colourism and how it impacts people of colour. Paralympian Stef Reid is heading to Tokyo next month to represent team GB at the 2020 games in the long jump. She's a five-time world record holder and a triple Paralympic medallist. My guest this week is journalist and author Natalie Morris. Natalie is an online Senior Lifestyle Writer at the Metro, covering race, mental health, women in sport and women in the workplace. Her landmark weekly series ‘Mixed Up' spotlighted under-represented narratives and explored the nuanced reality of being mixed-race in the UK today. Natalie's debut book ‘Mixed/Other' was published in April this year, following a milestone year in the global conversation about race since the murder of George Floyd on 25th May 2020. The mixed-race population is the fastest-growing ethnic group in the UK, but the mainstream conversation about mixedness is stilted, repetitive and often problematic. In this episode, I ask Natalie about the experiences she presents in Mixed/Other, and why the concept of a “post-racial utopia”, where a golden generation transcends race, is not a solution to the inequalities racism creates today. We talk about the role of the media in encouraging healthy conversations about race, how most publications' bottom-up approach to diversity isn't creating real change and the challenge for journalists to co-exist with online abuse on social media. This conversation was recorded on 20th April 2021. Want to share your view on something we discussed on the podcast? Email us podcast@raisethe.bar. In Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality in Modern Britain (out now), Mancunian writer and Metro columnist Natalie Morris explores the multifaceted experience of mixed-race people in the UK. Examining identity, dating, family life, beauty, culture, and more through a plethora of people across the UK, Mixed/Other shines a light on what it means to be mixed race today. This was such an interesting conversation. Natalie Morris is a journalist and the author of Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality in Modern Britain, which draws on her own life experience as well as dozens of interviews to examine the mixed experience. From why she uses the term mixed, rather than mixed race, to the problem with brands' current enthusiasm for ethnically ambiguous models and how it makes her feel when people speculate as to the colour of any hypothetical child she might have, it's thoughtful, fascinating and hugely informative. I loved talking to Natalie about all of this - she was just so insightful. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Natalie Morris: Mixed/Other... with TRE´s Giles Brown
Hello! This week on Close-Up we were joined by complete genius Natalie Morris, who is a writer and an author. Her debut book Mixed/Other: Explorations of Multiraciality in Modern Britain is out now. We talked about her trailblazing book, identifying as mixed, why the conversation around being mixed desperately needs to happen, our wishes for the world in 10 years time, taking time for ourselves, personality traits we want to adopt and more.
Cameron, Johnson, and the murky world of lobbying - plus, what's it like to grow up mixed race? The Calling Peston team is back to examine the lobbying scandal which is engulfing the Tory Party. Shehab and Dan tell you everything you need to know, while Robert gives insight and analysis. Our special guest is author Natalie Morris talks to us about her new book, 'Mixed/Other', which explores what life is like growing up mixed race in the UK.Remember to like, subscribe, and rate us five stars!
Narratives around race and ethnicity continue to be reductive and damaging, says journalist Natalie Morris, who chatted to Jen about her new book Mixed/Other, as well as identity, entitlement, and the limitations of the census. Hannah’s found out some juicy gossip about her family, so she’s caught up with Professor Rebecca Probert about the history of divorce and – SPOILER ALERT – bigamy. In Jenny off the blocks, Jen’s talking about the unstoppable rise of Rachael Blackmore. In Rated or Dated, the team rollerskates gratuitously into 90s romcom, The Truth About Cats and Dogs. And it's breaking news, unreliable news, and surprising news sources in the Bush Telegraph. Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/3fvCBVo How does it feel when your heritage isn't listed as an option on an identification form? What is it like to grow up as the only person in your family who looks like you? Where do you belong if you are simultaneously seen as being 'too much' of one race and 'not enough' of another to fit neatly into society's expectations? The mixed population is the fastest-growing group in the U.K. today, but the mainstream conversation around mixedness is stilted, repetitive and often problematic. At a time when ethnically ambiguous models fill our Instagram feeds and our high street shop windows, and when children of interracial relationships are lauded as heralding in the dawn of a post-racial utopia, journalist Natalie Morris takes a deep dive into what it really means to be mixed in Britain today. From blackfishing to the fetishisation of mixed babies; from the complexities of passing and code-switching to navigating the world of work and dating, Natalie explores the ways in which all of these issues uniquely impact those of mixed heritage. Drawing from a wealth of research, interviews and her own personal experiences, in Mixed/Other, Natalie's aims to dismantle the stereotypes that have plagued mixed people for generations and to amplify the voices of mixed Britons today, shining a light on the struggles and the joys that come with being mixed.
In this ep we discuss THE celeb interview of the century. No, not Mrs Merton grilling Debbie McGee, but when Meghan met Oprah. We chat to journalist and author Natalie Morris about the implications of the Sussex’s revelations and how they may shape discussions of racism and mental health in the future. Plus we debate whether multivitamins or salted caramel bellends are acceptable Mother’s Day presents and how matching coat hangers are the key to a happy existence.

Actions are the loudest voice. It can be hard to feel like you are using your voice. Sharing your opinions. Knowing what to say. Worrying if it will be seen as right or wrong. Especially right now. The global anti racism protests that have been triggered by George Floyd’s horrendous death. I know many of my friends and family feel like they need to show the world that they care and that they stand by their black sisters and brothers across the world, yet hold back from fear of saying the wrong thing. I know this because I have had replies to emails I have sent about this very thing. There's an amazing article written by Natalie Morris for the metro > https://metro.co.uk/2020/06/01/white-people-why-vital-speak-racism-even-scared-12786718/ I will be honest - I felt like I didn't have the right words. Worrying that it wouldn't come across right. That I couldn't articulate what I wanted to say Like “who am I to have an opinion as a white woman who cannot understand” and has been extended many privileges in different shapes and forms because of how I look. I am doing a lot of reflection. This may be true for you in many areas of your life. On this show we focus on being more visible and to stop hiding so you can grow and learn and have the work you love and have the career you want. But that doesn't mean you have to be the loudest in the room to get that. “Your actions are your loudest voice” It is about being genuine. Genuine action. and this can look different for different people. Your way forward won’t be the same as other people's ways forward. You have to decide what that looks like. And to do it for the right reasons. Not because everyone else is doing that so you will too. Abi Adamson, a woman I don’t even known had a massive impact on me when she was talking about how organisations need to do things differently and her own experiences as a black woman - here is the video > https://www.linkedin.com/posts/activity-6674257575455924224-rNua Don’t sit there over thinking and planning all the time. Do something today and then do something the next day. Find your own way of using your voice. It doesn't have to be in everyone's face and you don’t have to do it to get more ‘likes’ on a post. “This is about the internal work so that you can be there fully for others externally.” If this is something that you know you want to do more of then reach out to me - depending on where you are at and what you want I may be able to help or I can definitely signpost you to some amazing people and resources.. I would love to hear from you - what action will you take - what does that look like for you? Let me know. In the twenty-first episode of the Just Checking In Podcast, we spoke to Senior Referee Officer at the English Football Association, Farai Hallam. Farai is a qualified professional referee and a former professional footballer having played for Stevenage before several injuries curtailed his career before he was released by the club and forced him to change career. Referees across the English football pyramid face abuse both verbal and in some extremely rare cases physical by players on the pitch. They also face a barrage of abuse by fans on social media platforms as well as by pundits when they make the wrong decision. In this case, we wanted to show that referees are human beings too, with their own mental health to manage. We chatted to Farai about his football journey, both playing and refereeing, racism in football as well as incidents of racism he faced whilst playing the game and his mental health journey. We also discussed the interview he did for the Metro for journalist Natalie Morris as part of her 'Mixed Up' feature, which is a weekly series that aims to elevate the under-heard voices of the mixed-race population in the UK. You can read that article in full here: https://metro.co.uk/2019/10/16/mixed-up-being-english-is-not-about-what-you-look-like-im-proud-to-represent-modern-england-10920711/ As always, #itsokaytovent Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk

In this pod we discussed the article he wrote for Vent in January 2018 about some of the realities of working in the restaurant industry and how it's pressure cooker environments can have an impact on one's mental health, with some important stories about how it has taken the lives of several prominent chefs as well. We also discussed his own cookery journey, his mental health journey and of course, a mental health chat. A final topic of discussion was around identity and the interview he did for the Metro for journalist Natalie Morris as part of her 'Mixed Up' feature, which is a weekly series that aims to elevate the under-heard voices of the mixed-race population in the UK. On a celebration of the first year of Radio Pizza Party we have the guests Ben Flynn, Steffani Grondin, Evan Ford, and Natalie Morris. Morgellons has been coined a delusional disorder by the medical community. Yet, many people have suffered from Morgellons. What is it? Furthermore, why does the evidence keep mounting that our history is changing in real time? This phenomenon has become popularly known as the Mandella effect. Why is it happening? On today's episode we are missing Jack (but not in the emotional sense) so the great Gabey Lucas and Natalie Morris are on the show. Our topic this week is "Getting into Fights". We talk about an altercation where a guy runs really fast and another where Gabey treats two adults like toddlers. We get a call in from Carl Planters who tells us about his adult food and beverage reviews, and to cap it all off we play a round of "Jokes Written by a Person". Please listen.
