QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“Satan wants us to view God's commands as barriers that keep us from enjoying the things we are entitled to. In reality, God is protecting us from what will harm us.”~Alisa Childers, singer-songwriter and author “The exposition of the Word of God and prayer belong together. It is in prayer, costly, sustained, and prevailing, that the Word of God is released through teaching and preaching. Prayer is the price of power, and the church is not likely to recover its lost authority until this basic biblical truth is recovered.”~Bruce Milne, pastor and educator “Eternal life is not so much everlasting life as knowledge of the Everlasting One.”~D.A. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962), U.S. first lady, diplomat, and activist “If you think that moral reasoning is something we do to figure out the truth, you'll be constantly frustrated by how foolish, biased, and illogical people become when they disagree with you.” “Our moral thinking is much more like a politician searching for votes than a scientist searching for truth.” “People bind themselves into political teams that share moral narratives. Once they accept a particular narrative, they become blind….” ~Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist and NYU professor “…what the heart loves, the will chooses, and the mind justifies. The mind doesn't direct the will. The mind is actually captive to what the will wants, and the will itself, in turn, is captive to what the heart wants.” ~Dr. Ashley Null, scholar at the Humboldt University of Berlin “Pharisees are not an extinct breed. Whenever we find ourselves valuing the letter of God's law above its spirit; whenever we find ourselves unable to rejoice in the saving and renewing of lives simply because the instrument used was not someone who dots all the i's and crosses all the t's of our…group; whenever we lose the daily, hourly sense of joy in the grace of God…, then we need to be beware. ‘Lord, is it I?' The only security against Pharisaism is grace, which is perhaps the reason the Lord may from time to time permit us to stumble in our Christian walk so that we may have opportunity to rediscover it. Luther's observation, ‘there is no cure for spiritual pride like a little over-eating, over-sleeping or over-drinking' is to the point…..” ~Bruce Milne, pastor and professor “We must not be frightened nor cajoled into accepting evil as deliverance from evil. We must go on struggling to be human, though monsters of abstractions police and threaten us.” ~Robert Hayden (1913-1980), poet, essayist, and educator SERMON PASSAGE John 9:1-41 (ESV) 1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. 8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” 13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” 18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. 35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,' your guilt remains.”

Dynamic Diversity According to the Bible- Culturology Dynamic Diversity, written by Bruce Milne, is based on the thesis that the church is meant to be a center of reconciliation. This idea of a reconciliation center is predicated upon the vast division in society, division which is normally comprised of the four major categories of class, age, race, and gender. According to Milne, a center of reconciliation is a place which seeks to reconcile the divides found in those four categories (Milne 14). In other words, a center of reconciliation is meant to either mend, bridge, or even transcend these categories of division and/or distinction, to borrow the verbs used by Milne. What follows is a brief summary of the book, interjecting some thematic and practical points related to Milne's thesis. Milne begins by noting that the way to bridge these points of division expressed in class, age, race and gender is first and foremost a conceptual approach to the global nature of the church: This book is written in the conviction that the divine mystery, the diversity in unity of the people of God in Christ, need not be confined to the global stage, nor need it be deferred to the future age of glory. Rather it can be experienced today, in embryo, in every local Christian congregation on the face of the earth. (9) Milne stresses that the church must recognize the diverse nature of Jesus' new humanity on the global scale in order to bring about real change and conformity to this reality within their own congregations. He makes a strong case of why this is necessary by noting that this was indeed a reality among the early church across the Roman Empire and beyond (10). To be clear, notions of diversity expressed in church history are often followed with calls to abandon orthodoxy for the sake of ecumenical renderings. A refreshing point in Milne's argument is that he opts not to abandon orthodoxy, but rather to follow it to the logical conclusion of unified diversity in the new humanity. He does this by savoring the truth of this among the people of God among the first two chapters, followed by suggesting the embrace of orthodox theology as necessary for unity: “this new-humanity, unity-in-diversity, together-under-Christ model receives significant support from primary Christian beliefs […] theology buttresses the exegetical conclusions reached in the first two chapters” (53). Milne then goes on to speak of the contours found in the Apostle's Creed, including the wonder of the Trinity, the atonement, and the church to name a few.  The next two chapters move to speak of the global approach of forming and structuring congregations, as well as a reaffirmation of the historical witnesses of global structures in the church. The argument is essentially, if the world around us is more globalized as ever (Ch. 4) and the early church was able to comprise itself in such a way before the globalization of the 21st century (Ch. 5), then the church today has no excuse not to be diversified in its structure. While this is his argument, Milne admits that this is an argument from cultural trajectories and history, not from a mandate in scripture (73-74). Chapter six offers some transitional material, along with some practical considerations for how the church can more readily be unified along denominational lines. Perhaps the strongest point in that short chapter is his point on the usefulness of denominations: “Denominations are commonly seen today as having only a limited shelf-life; however, at the very least, they provide a sense of identity and belonging, a family of kindred congregations” (99). In many ways, the content in this chapter serves primarily as a transition to the strongest point of the book, which I believe to be chapter seven. Having laid the foundation in previous chapters that the church is the heartbeat and center of reconciliation, the substance and form of worship becomes a real concern. Milne suggest several characteristics of worship that correlate to an inclusive church: all members of the congregation worshipping together, no one being disenfranchised in worship, worship must ‘please our neighbor' as well as ourselves, worship is gracious, inclusive and celebrative (106-113). These characteristics of worship are all important in their own rite, and since they are all grounded in scripture, it would be unwise to suggest that any of them are more dispensable than the others. In my opinion, chapter seven is the strongest chapter in the book, since worship is the heartbeat of the church in its structural form. As such, I have thought the most about how my church can implement these elements in our own ministry. We currently embrace Milne's principle that “all members of the congregation worship together” (106). It is hard to imagine that a segregated mindset of church can be avoided when this principle is neglected, if not racially then at least generationally. Milne states, “Without intending to be inappropriately judgmental, it is frankly difficult to see how this biblical principle is upheld in congregations that divide into generational or other subsections for their corporate worship” (106). Having experienced this kind of segregation previously, my current church is a breath of fresh air in the commitment to encourage all age groups to gather together for corporate worship. This certainly does not suggest that I find chapter seven to be the strongest chapter because it affirms the current practice in my church; this chapter also offers a helpful challenge for future implementation that would be equally wise to consider. My church needs to grow in the celebrative character of worship. As a church that emphasizes the simplicity of worship common among “old school” Presbyterianism, there is a danger to oversimplify the form and leading of worship so as to exclude any clear expression of celebration. Milne offers a helpful reorientating for my church to remember that worship done right does not need to exclude the importance worship experienced right, and this can be done without defaulting to experiential excesses. The remaining chapters of the book build on the foundation of worship in chapter seven in order to articulate what worship truly is beyond the Sunday morning service, yet this is not done in an effort to diminish the function of the worship service. Rather, the point Milne makes is to help the church to remember the nature of worship as discipleship (Ch. 8) and evangelism (Ch. 9). The logic of this argument is quite sound, since worship understood rightly is that which continues to disciple those who are believers, and discipleship is the functioning arm of evangelism in the broad corporate sense and the individual sense of person to person. While the church might be tempted to approach these categories in a programmatic way, Milne's point is to see these things as a happy expression of the driving principle of the book, dynamic diversity in the new humanity, which foster a unity and inclusivity to the consideration of discipleship and evangelism. The final chapter of Milne's book is not only a summary of his argument, but a revisiting of the point made in his preface about the global wave of the church in worship. The point is clear enough in this concluding chapter, a non-negotiable call to action: “Diversity is not optional. God's goal for his church, within his all-embracing purpose ‘to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ' (Eph 1.10), calls for congregations where that final unification is anticipated” (167). The thesis in Milne's book that the church is the appropriate center of reconciliation, is also the thematic underpinning throughout the practical points including those related to denominations, worship style, and evangelism. This reconciliation theme is based on the fact that the church is described as a new humanity, especially from the words of the apostle Paul to the Corinthians: “All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, that is in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation” (2 Cor. 5.18-19). This new creation is the only means to bring true unity into the human experience, since in the first humanity, the attitude towards one another is that of hatred and neglect. In this attitude, Cain is willing to kill his own brother and then argue to God about any supposed consideration of his brother's well-being: “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?' (Gen. 4.9). While this is true, Milne's encouraging point is that this new humanity is meant to reconcile humanity with new hearts that long to be one another's keeper with the same love which we all have experienced from Christ Himself.

Like many, Vice President/CMO of Corporate/Business Development Bruce Milne, and his team at Pivot3 never could have prepared for the unique opportunities that COVID-19 would present. However, not even a pandemic could affect the mission-critical nature of physical security and video surveillance. In the physical security market, 60% of data captured is video, and 80% of that is video surveillance. As we get a taste of what life might be like on the other side of virtual meetings and social distancing, schools and businesses of all types will only have a greater emphasis on safety and security. With 20 years of marketing experience under his belt, Bruce gives us a peek behind the curtain when it comes to how he and his team market Pivot3’s solutions. We’ll also touch on: -An unmatched level of insight that comes with building an executive team who has dabbled in every other function within the organization -Looking at marketing through the lens of art vs. science -The power and value of marketers ability to write exceptional prose, and synthesizing content based on audience (Sounds like the team over at SealedAir!) -Building and optimizing your solutions around real-life retrospectives on successful implementations -Naming products after the outcomes your services will provide (Smart City, Safe Casino, Safe Airport) with vertical-based messaging
