On today's episode of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, actress, writer, and stand-up comic Chase O'Donnell joins me to discuss the juxtaposition of having anxiety and working in the entertainment industry. Furthermore, we look at the changes comedy has undergone from the ‘90s to the present.    “I feel like, with where comedy is going now, we're all like super neurotic, you know? And I think we're just a little more expressive about it now. Like you kind of have to cater to the evolution of our audience. Yeah, it's true in the nineties. Like it was all very much like observational comedy, and that's been done. And now it's like going into your feelings and “what's real” comedy.” (8:17)   We chat about how death can be a dark but beneficial motivator, the importance of staying true to yourself, how appeasing your inner child can still be authentic to who you are today and the pros and cons of flexing your comedic chops in the open mic circuit.     “That's very insightful. And honestly, just hearing this makes me feel better about that questioning I do have of like, “am I just doing this because younger me wants it? And is it really what I want?” But if younger me did want it, that's when we are the most authentic and true to ourselves.” (16:18)   We also chat about topics such as handling imposter syndrome as a performer, how guilt is “an illusion,” and the power of saying “no.” Chase then provides me with key insights into the struggles of women in modern dating, her personal struggles dating as a female comic, her experience with stigmas surrounding female comics, and what she looks for in a potential partner.    “So now that I'm aware, I've been having to be selfish for the first time. And if someone asks me something, I have to; it's like a four-step process. I have to go, “why am I scared to say no? What am I scared of?” And then usually it's like, “I'm scared they're not going to like me. I'm scared. I'm not going to be the teacher's pet anymore.” Like whatever it is, it's so silly. And then I write out like, what's the action that I need to do for me, not for them. For me, it's that I need to say no and I need to take a day at home. And then I have to do the action. So when I go through these, like, I'm really having to break it down because I'm so ingrained to be a people pleaser and just say yes. And I have like an instant reaction, and my body gets like, okay, I have to do it. And I have to slow down and be selfish and tell myself what it is that I need for the first time I'm doing this. [You have to] It is a game changer to be selfish.” (31:02)   In This Episode:  (2:51) “High School Musical” slaps (6:00) Getting anxious at the most random times (8:17) Comedy in the'90s vs. comedy today (9:26) Being motivated by death (14:23) Staying true to yourself vs. appeasing your inner child to stay authentic (20:04) The pros and cons of an open mic gig  (22:50) Coping with imposter syndrome as a stand-up comic  (27:09) The intersection of guilt and selfishness (35:20) Seeing the power in saying “no” and being honest about how you feel (40:05) Modern dating as a female stand-up comic (44:26) The stigmas of women in stand-up comedy (46:06) The overcorrecting of casting in the modern entertainment industry  (51:39) Being on guard as a single female comic  (54:35) How naps benefit comics (58:32) The two things women are great at  (1:00:04) These are the traits you need to woo Chase    Our Guest Chase O'Donnell is a creative force to be reckoned with. As a writer, mattress, and comic, she brings unapologetic honesty and razor-sharp wit to the table, making her a truly unique and talented performer. Her style and personality have made her a fan-favorite on numerous podcasts, such as "Dr. Drew After Dark" and "Where My Mom's At.” When she's not entertaining the masses with her comedic chops, she is flexing her wordsmithing skills as a writer for National Lampoon's Final Edition Podcast. (7/28/2021) Mike and cohost, actress Analesa Fisher were joined by actress, writer and comedian Maeve Press for episode 104. A native of New York - now in LA, Maeve Press landed the role of Genevieve - starring opposite Josh Thomas and Kayla Cromer on the Freeform series ‘Everything's Gonna Be Okay' now in its second season on Hulu. Maeve has made this role her own and her comedic skills are certainly put to good use on the show. About to turn 18, Maeve has wisdom beyond her years which is probably why she comes across as real and confident. Discovering that being laughed at was fun and cool is the genesis of her interest in comedy. Maeve Press is blazing a trail as a standup comedian. Her material is original and inspired by the humor found in life experiences and random discoveries. Slightly edgy, Maeve Press feels at home on-stage and has performed standup sets at bars, comedy clubs and festivals everywhere. At 14, She was the youngest comic ever to perform standup at Boston's ‘Women in Comedy Festival' and has played other festivals including Hoboken and will once again be appearing at ‘Burbank Comedy Festival' in August. Maeve fell in love with the arts early on perhaps by osmosis. Maeve's parents, C. Fraser Press and Darren are award-winning filmmakers and have produced some amazing films. Maeve starred as ‘Tuesday McDermott' in the Award-Winning indie film ‘Theresa Is a Mother.' She also co-wrote and stars as ‘Nora' in the indie film short ‘Too Many Buddhas' – now on the indie film festival circuit. We are on week 5 of the podcast version of the New Year New jokes comedy writing intensive. To start, I'm so excited to share my interview with Ken Hamlett this week! Ken is a Chicago based Comedian/ published writer. You can catch him performing at some of the most notable clubs in the country like Flappers, Spokane/Tacoma Comedy Clubs, and The Laugh Factory Chicago just to name a few. Ken Hamlett is the two-time winner of Western Oregon University’s Last comic standing and the winner of the 2018 Western Oregon Comedy Competition. He’s also been featured at comedy Festivals such as Just For Laughs NW, Gilda's Laugh Fest, Burbank Comedy Festival, Out Of Bounds Comedy Festival, and more. Ken Hamlett is the producer/ host of the award winning Podcast and nationally traveling show: A Drunken Night Out. https://www.kendalehamlett.com/ https://www.facebook.com/Kendalehamlett https://twitter.com/kenhamlett2 https://www.instagram.com/kenhamlett/ --- The warm-up this week is to write a caption to a photo. I think "caption contests" are a great way to get the comedy brain warmed up. If you are following us on social media, I am offering a photo for this. You are totally welcome to comment your caption! The exercise is what I like to call Mirror Time! Take your notebook, phone, or whatever and go hang out in front of a mirror. What is the first thing you notice? Write about it. What do you notice after staring for a few minutes? Write about it. What are you finding yourself obsess over? Write about it. This is a great way to get some opening jokes. When you first step on stage the audience is obviously taking you in visually. If you can predict what they are thinking, and call them out on it, they will think you are in their heads. These jokes are great ice breakers, which is why you see so many comics open with them. -- Take your vitamins. Take care of yourself. Don't be a dick on stage. - You're Comedy Mom --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comedy-mom/message

On Today's Episode of “THee Fire Wolf Podcast” I have my incredible crystal aura friend Val Paschall!!!! She is a wonderful comedian, writer, producer, animal lover, Crystal chakra worker, and friend! She's performed in the She Devil Comedy Festival, The Burbank Comedy Festival, and opened for Wham City! Her and I met through the DC comedy scene and realized we were fellow “woo woos” immediately! Today's episode is all about the moon, crystals and what it is like being an empath during these times of spiritual transformation. Side note: Val also ran a wonderful comedy room at a space called “DOC FC” which is a staple bar for soccer fans in the Washington DC area. I know nothing of this ball sport, but it was really cool to learn about soccer fans and tell jokes to people who are incredibly die hard about their sport and teams! You can find Val here:

Every week comedian Yael Gavish talks with a comedian that has at some point been asked “Where Are You REALLY From?” Whether it's due to an accent, skin color, the outfit they are wearing or various other factors. Each conversation explores personal stories about travels, family life, cultural experiences and funny stories that have happened along the way. CHICAGO SPECIAL Today I met the incredible Mallory Bradford. She based in Chicago and produces the Chicago Underground Comedy but travels all around the world! Her comedy is sharp, emotional, and funny, which she thinks is a great combination of things to be. Audiences agree. Mallory is a producer at the historic Chicago Underground Comedy and a regular at Chicago's prestigious Lincoln Lodge. She has performed at showcases and clubs all over the Midwest and both coasts, including The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Bar, and Comedians You Should Know. She hosts a weekly open mic at the historic iO theater and is a graduate of The Second City Conservatory, The iO Theater, and The Annoyance Theater. Mallory has performed at The Chicago Women's Funny Festival, The Cream City Comedy Festival, The Big Little Comedy Festival, and The Burbank Comedy Festival, and her writing has been featured at The Second City Mary Scruggs Works by Women Festival.
