Lead Instructor for Calibre Press, Kelly DeVoll joins me on this episode. Kelly's Law Enforcement career is impressive but more importantly his passion to better the profession through his training and instructing is more impressive. Kelly is a 30 plus year retired Lieutenant and has held various positions from patrolman, to swat supervisor , to command staff level program supervisor. Kelly has taught and instructed innumerable Law Enforcement officers across the United Stated and Canada, and has been instructing since 1992. Wisdom oozes off of this seasoned veteran of law enforcement, and he delves into his training topics, and gets honest with the failures of the profession as well ( yes! He gives possible solutions to the failures). A truly enjoyable and insightful conversation and I'm honored as always. You can find Kelly at https://calibrepress.com/instructor-home-page-2022/00-lt-kelly-devoll-2022/ , and I highly recommend taking training from Calibre Press ( https://calibrepress.com/ ). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brownieinblue/support
Training, you are going to hear a lot about training in this season's episodes. It's the cornerstone of good police work and unfortunately, we don't get it when we need it. There are lots of reasons why and we are going to explore those and other training topics on this episode with our interview of Lt. Jim Glennon.Jim started with the Lombard Illinois Police Department in 1980 and held many positions at the department. In 1998 he became the first Commander of the Dupage County Major Crimes Task Force. He also holds a BA in Psychology and a master's degree in Police management. He acquired Calibre Press in 2012 and today provides training through books, newsletters, seminars, online training, and in-person training.Jim took the time to talk with me about the current state of training, the problems with training, and some insight into issues facing law enforcement today.

Episode 057 of the what's a Hero Podcast brings an understanding of lifelong service in our conversation with police officer, author, business owner, family man, public speaker and trainer, Lt. Jim Glennon. Lt. Glennon's desire to do nothing else than be a cop in the suburbs of Chicago had been with him since an early age. Hailing from a family of cops, he knew this was all he wanted to do and be. After 30 years of service, leaving was an emotional moment for him, and remains that way. His lifework will always be police work, which is why he continues to help a new generation learn the lessons he learned. The word hero means much more when one honors the kid, they once were, with the work of continuing to serve what that kid wanted so badly to become.

Scott Buhrmaster is the Chief Executive Officer at Calibre Press, Inc. (https://calibrepress.com/), one of the most respected law enforcement training organizations in the country. Combining his 30 years of experience in the industry with that of a team of world-class trainers and premier subject matter experts, Buhrmaster and the Calibre Press teamwork to provide a diverse selection of critical and timely training programs for a broad spectrum of law enforcement professionals nationwide. Scott sat down for an interview with Adam at the 2021 ILEETA Conference. In this episode, they dive into a conversation about the future of law enforcement training. Adam & Scott discuss the positive and negative impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on law enforcement training, specifically the “survival mentality” that paved the way for more collaboration between instructors and the transition to online training. Scott also addresses a hybrid teaching model and the need for instructors to merge in-person training with interactive online methods, as well as the challenges that come with interleaving these two delivery systems. As Scott says in this interview: “Adversity is one of the best catalysts to creative change”. For more training from world-leading experts, visit the ILET Network (https://ilet.network) today! Today's episode of the Tactical Breakdown features Steve Johnson at the 2021 ILEETA Conference. Steve currently serves as the Chief of Police for the city of Swansea, Illinois and is a lead instructor for Calibre Press. Steve provides comprehensive training classes with Calibre Press that teach you to be “conscious of the unconscious” and use your knowledge of human behaviour to effectively obtain a confession. At the ILEETA conference, Steve trained law enforcement instructors on the topic of Interviewing & Interrogation. He uses his lived experience to provide information on I&I methodologies, human factors, and human behaviour (understanding the behaviour and the context). We discuss the negative connotation around the term “interrogation” and Steve shares a case study that includes a great example of when to move on to interrogation tactics and how to pivot when you are stuck in an investigation. Adam & Steve also dive into what it takes to be an investigator including traits, inherent or developed skills, and how to get promoted. A key takeaway: there is no magic method for interrogation that will always get you a confession. Steve's suggestion? Learn every modality, tactic, and methodology around I&I. Get your hands on all the information that you can. Watch and learn in real situations whenever possible. Seek training & advice from the top experts in the field. Over time, you will find a blend of these tactics that works for you, and you will be armed with the necessary knowledge to pivot and try something new if your style isn't getting the job done. Develop your knowledge on I&I - train with Steve and Calibre Press! More about our guest: Previously, Chief Johnson was the Special Operations Coordinator for the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office. With the State's Attorney's Office, some of Steve's responsibilities include participating in grant writing and increasing technology in the grant writing process, coordinating communication between law enforcement and the state's attorney's office, and coordinating law enforcement training. Steve Johnson also served with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office and retired as a captain in 2014. Johnson was assigned as the Commander of the elite Street Crimes Unit, a special force designed to go after career criminals in violent areas of the entire county. He also served as the Chief Investigator overseeing the Criminal Investigation Section, Drug Tactical Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Special Response Team (SWAT), Warrant Section, Evidence Section, DEA Taskforce Agent, Auto theft Taskforce Agent, Courthouse Security, Domestic Violence Unit, Internal Affairs and St. Clair County Investigative Professionals Group (SCIP). Criminal Justice Evolution Podcast - Hosted by Patrick Fitzgibbons
Hello everyone and welcome back to the show. Special thanks to all the brave men and women who work in the criminal justice field. Thank you. You all are doing a great job. Do you love coffee? You will love the coffee from Four Sigmatic. Check the link out at www.cjevolution.com In this episode, Patrick welcomes Val Van Brocklin. For over 30 years Val has been winning hearts, inspiring action and helping people find greater meaning in the work they do. She got here through a unique combination of skills, education, and “in the trenches” experience — all fueled by her own passion for people who have chosen to serve others. Val had a teaching career before she earned her law degree at the University of Virginia and stalked high adventure in Alaska – joining the Anchorage District Attorney's Office. She quickly became a senior trial attorney. Because of her notable work, Val was asked to join the state's Office of Special Prosecution & Appeals where she had state-wide responsibility for cases that were so complex, they required specialized investigative and prosecution efforts. Val's endeavors again caught attention. She was recruited by the U.S. Attorney's Office to prosecute complex white-collar crime, for which she received the FBI's commendation. As a state and federal prosecutor for over 10 years, Val's trial work sparked not only ample, local media coverage but was also featured nationally on: ABC'S PRIME TIME LIVE Discovery Channel's Justice Files And in USA Today, The National Enquirer, and REDBOOK. Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Val's dynamic presentation style made her a frequently invited speaker for law enforcement and other professional and community groups. It also left her fielding many more speaking requests than she could possibly meet — prosecuting criminals is a full-time job. And so, another adventure presented itself. Described by Calibre Press as “the indisputable master of entertainment,” Val is now an internationally sought keynote speaker, trainer, and author. Her training programs can be seen on the Law Enforcement Television Network, one of which won a prestigious 2000 Telly Award that honors outstanding cable television and the finest video and film productions. Her Public Radio commentaries and stories include a 2005 national award winner.
