This series, which delves into the evolution from 19th to 21st-century supervisory practices, is a must-read for anyone interested in modern competencies. It covers various topics, from successful and inclusive leadership to empathetic, agile, innovative, and ethical leadership. The series has garnered high praise from Taylor & Francis, underscoring its importance in the field. Dr. Rothwell highlighted a crucial point: about 600,000 supervisors in the US lack formal training and learn by observing superiors. The discussion underscored the need for practical guidance in supervision, equipping supervisors with the necessary skills. This includes mastering interpersonal skills, managing cultural differences, understanding emotional intelligence, and fostering self-awareness. The transition from family-owned to corporate settings and the importance of respecting individual growth were also emphasized. Dr. Rothwell shared a story about a supervisor who called her boss instead of 911 when faced with an employee crisis. This illustrates how supervisors often provide life advice and work guidance due to broken family institutions in some regions. Dr. Rothwell, Dr. Bakhshandeh, and Dr. discussed leadership in hybrid work environments. They stressed the need for supervisors to be trusted advisors, skilled in empathy, communication, and other competencies. William shared success stories from a high-potential program emphasizing hands-on training and regular coaching. The group discussed challenges like loneliness and increased suicide rates in hybrid settings.

As CEO of Full Capacity Marketing, Celina is the 2017 Marketing CEO of the Year in the Pacific Coast USA, a former American Marketing Association Marketer of the Year, and a two-time Women Who Mean Business finalist. For the past 25 years, she's been a strong advocate for workforce education and economic development missions.  As a communications expert, Celina has helped more than 500 workforce development and K-12/post-secondary education organizations build high-performing outreach campaigns that empower vulnerable populations, students and job seekers to embrace their potential.  Finding the Best Marketing Strategy for Your Business After 25+ years experience in workforce development and marketing, Celina says she still follows the same process with all of her agency clients.  The first step is to sit down and define what problem the business is trying to solve in the market and what their unique selling proposition is. From there, the agency performs market research to understand the psychographics of the client's target audience. Customers are inundated with marketing messages so it's essential to use data to cut through the nose.  The last step is to add outreach strategies, which may involve a new website with search engine optimization (SEO), paid ads, or PR. The best strategy will depend on where your ideal client spends their time online. Relationship-Building and Word-of-Mouth Born and raised in North Carolina, Celina approaches business like a true southerner by putting relationships first. Up to 97% of her agency clients come from word-of-mouth referrals. From the early days of her business, Celina has prioritized her sense of mission and helping others. She built her network through email outreach, phone calls, and speaking at conferences. To this day, the company has never run an advertising campaign. Instead, Celina shares information freely with her audience through email newsletters, blogs, and ebooks. This educational approach has resulted in long-term, repeat customers–many of whom have become like family. Tips for Running a Remote Team Celina's agency is fully remote and has been from the beginning–something she sees as an inherent advantage. Not only does working remotely save on overhead costs, but it also promotes greater communication between team members. Celina's team works across several different time zones, but she's flexible on when her employees work, as long as they continue to deliver results.  Although these days there are many tools for remote work, technology alone isn't enough to ensure the success of your virtual team. It's equally as important for the CEO to set the tone and culture. You need to have systems and processes in place, and communicate clear expectations at the start of every project. Establishing key milestones will help keep everyone on track, and your team will appreciate having the freedom to work on their own schedule. Enjoy this episode with CEO and Marketing Expert Celina Shands…  Quotes “The reason why we're called Full Capacity Marketing is because I want each of our clients to be at full capacity long after our contract concludes.” “If you position yourself as a partner versus a vendor, you have more opportunities that come in. That's why we do things like ebooks, teaching, and things of that nature. Whether you work with us or not, we want you to succeed, especially in those missions.” “I can't say we've had all this success intentionally. We set the course as best as possible and then go with the flow and see what opportunities come up.” “PR strategies are fantastic for entrepreneurs–getting them out there, getting their voice, and having a connection in the community.”  “How does your business not only solve a problem, but connect to a bigger mission that is of value and relevance in the community or the markets that you serve?”  “My grandma always said, ‘No one can argue with results.'” “There's room for everybody. It's not a competitive thing, even though you're trying to be unique in your own way. It's really about being authentic." There's a learning problem in America's workforce. Opportunities for workers to develop skills that can lead them down successful career paths are scarce, and often ineffective. 83 cents of every dollar goes towards training for people who already have received some form of higher education, and even then, 59% of workers claim they had no proper training, and simply acquired skills "on the job." With massive turnover rates and somehow so-called "talent shortages," the current playbook companies are using needs to be shaken up, and that's what today's guest has set out to do. William B. Bonvillian is a lecturer at MIT in the Science Technology and Society and Political Science Departments, as well as Senior Director of Special Projects, at MIT's Office of Digital Learning. He also served for seventeen years as a senior policy advisor in the U.S. Senate. His legislative efforts included science and technology policy, helping create the Department of Homeland Security, and legislation regarding Intelligence Reform, climate change, and national defense and life science R&D. He's also the co-author of Workforce Education: A New Roadmap alongside our previous Bring It In guest, Sanjay Sarma. In the book, William dives into the disconnect between the public, private, and education systems that's led to many of the struggles facing our workforce, and what steps we can take at the legislative, educational, and business levels to fix it. In today's episode of the podcast we got to take a deep dive into William's strategies and hopes for the future of work. This is another one you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

About Performance and Happiness One of the first articles correlating performance and happiness was published in 2003 showing that these two concepts are closely related. They are part of an effective performance-management system; connecting a culture that supports positive impact on people: performance and overall happiness. Studies show that individuals who are happy and effective performers share similar characteristics. They: Have a clear direction and find that direction motivating Talk and act in ways that promote performance and happiness for all Are significantly engaged in their work, finding meaning and purpose in their work, and have more positive experiences than negative experiences Are optimistic, look into the future, and are happy about their workplace. That's where I want to dig more and understand new ways to Boost performance, growth and happiness at work. My guest - Angela Stopper - is known for her innovative views on education. Should we expect more changes? What are the most recurrent limiting beliefs that L&D / HR have concerning people's development What are the strategies that work to drive performance, growth and happiness at work One of the challenges for organizations is on scaling up coaching. It cost a lot and sometimes it takes time to see results - what are their options? Is ‘coaching culture' a myth and can it a reality? How? The traditional model of assessing performance might be the bottleneck to create intrinsic motivation and engaged workplaces. What alternatives should organizations consider? This episode is about white women doing racial justice work and we talk about the pitfalls, and the courage it takes to engage in the conversation. Dr. Darlene Snider with Racial Justice form the Heart is the Mom Courage guest who is diving in with me and sharing with us here knowledge, experience and insight! Dr. Darlene Snider is a mother, an educational leader, social justice advocate, scholar and a Racial Justice From the Heart certified coach. Darlene's career has focused on cross-cultural understanding, democratic education, and leadership. She was a community college teacher for 15 years and has been an administrator, teacher, and researcher for over 20 years in higher education. She has worked collaboratively with colleagues in Canada and the United States, developing programs for youth and adults in various settings. She has served as a community college dean overseeing programs for English Language Learners, incarnated youth, and adults, and workforce education. As director of TRIO Upward Bound, she developed programming to provide academic and social support for first-generation high school students in completing high school and transitioning to college. Darlene is currently an Interim Dean of Workforce Education at Whatcom Community College in Washington State. Darlene continues to be active at the regional and state level, initiating pioneering programs fostering effective, equitable access to higher education —all related to cross-cultural understanding and social justice. With a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northeastern University, Darlene's research focuses on teaching and learning as lived experience, applied linguistics; issues of identity; reflexive inquiry; interpretative phenomenological inquiry or how individuals make sense of their personal experiences; and education for social justice. Darlene grew up in a home where English was not spoken at home. While she had always recognized her Mennonite grandparents' sacrifice when they fled their homes in the Soviet Union, now Ukraine, to immigrate to Canada in the early 1930s. Darlene says that "While my parent's struggles learning a language, navigating a new culture, and making a life that afforded the opportunities I have today have been relatively visible to me, my race privilege has not. As a result, I have had to uncover how race has shaped my life." Darlene has gained deeper insight through work, study, and personal experiences that have allowed her to question how her racial identity has unintentionally socialized her to uphold inequitable and racialized systems. Darlene was initially drawn to Dr. Amanda Kemp's work, Racial Justice from the H.E.A.R.T, because of Darlene's desire to be effective in having difficult conversations about race and racial equity. Darlene is a certified Racial Justice from the H.E.A.R.T facilitator and mentor coach. Through her work within the Racial Justice from the H.E.A.R.T community, she has been able to understand how compassion and empathy are the antidotes to guilt and shame and the place to begin when seeking to examine and dismantle systems that hold racism in place. "Now I distinguish that, I grew up in an immigrant-origin home, but my experiences would have been different had I not been white." Work In Progress
The role of the CEO in solving today’s workforce crises

In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Vivek Sharma, CEO and co-founder of the workforce education company InStride and author of the new book C-Spark: CEO-led Workforce Education for the AGE of AND. In the book, Sharma warns that "the American workforce is in Crisis with a capital C" and challenges the nation's CEOs to do something about it. He calls a company's employees the most important for future growth and says that among the top crises are upskilling, recruiting and retention, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Sharma argues that corporate education is the answer and it's good for the company and the worker. “Corporate education is an imperative strategy for companies to equip employees with new skills for a post-pandemic working world. The goal is to work back from the goals of the CEO, the strategic priorities, and build a workforce program that provides life-changing, career-boosting, quality education to their employees," Sharma tells me. Helping CEOs create these corporate education programs is the mission of Sharma's public benefits company, InStride, founded in 2019 with partners Arizona State University and TPG Rise Fund. They now offer 300 degree programs from high school through doctorates, 100 certificates programs, and more than 1,300 skills-building courses across a variety of industries. "We have helped tens of thousands of employees avoid $480 million of student debt," he says and adds that these programs have helped dozens of large employers harness and develop the talent potential of their workers. "An initiative in a large organization has stickiness and legs if it achieves the business objective. As time progresses, we will see the companies investing in their employees' education reap the rewards of a more engaged workforce, better progress on DE&I initiatives, and above-average recruitment and retention, all issues that keep CEOs awake at night," he adds. Sharma says the InStride approach is not one-size-fits-all, that it needs to be tailored to the worker's need. He says the CEOs they work with agree. "The most frequent approach that our partners take is 'we are not here to judge what the learning aspiration of the learner is. She knows what she wants. She knows the pace at which she can do it. Let her have access to all the different universities, all the programs, make the decision.' "Some employees have high school completion needs, some have an associate degree need, some want to complete a certificate or a certification, some want to do a four-year degree, some want to do a graduate degree. Our job in partnership with the employer is to meet the learner where she is, make it convenient and frictionless and financially supported for her to make a decision on what she wants to learn." And that, stresses Sharma, is also very good for business. Listen to the podcast here, or find and download wherever you get your podcasts.
