His attire sent a message before he even spoke—and it wasn't a strong one. Like it or not, what you wear speaks before you do. Whether you're a police officer, a leader, or just navigating everyday life, how you present yourself influences how others perceive you and how seriously they take you. In this episode, we explore five key examples of dressing to impress and why it matters, especially in law enforcement. 1. Why Your Appearance Sets the Tone Before You Speak Whether it's a job interview, courtroom testimony, or just walking into roll call, your clothing sends an immediate, unspoken message about your confidence, professionalism, and credibility. 2. Courtroom Appearances: Looking the Part of a Professional Officer Example: A police officer testifying in court wears a clean, pressed uniform, polished boots, and proper grooming. Why It Matters: Judges and juries pay attention to details. A well-put-together officer is seen as competent and credible. A sloppy uniform or unkempt appearance could lead to doubt in testimony, even if the facts are solid. 2. Transitioning as a new officer can be one of the most difficult things a firefighter can go through in their career. Norm opens the show with an important correction regarding the state's authority to involuntarily commit an individual and how long that temporary commitment may last. Thank you to WICC's own Lisa Wexler for listening and providing our listeners with the right information. Norm begins the show in earnest by discussing the Randy Cox case, which is making headlines for the questionable handling of an inmate transfer resulting in the apparent paralysis.  How are officers trained? What tools are available to them? And what do officers experience on a day to day basis in their encounters with the individual that lead to an observed calousness from the vantage of a detached media and public? Norm takes a balanced approach in analyzing the Randy Cox case. While the officers might have been correct to be suspicious of Cox's words of apparent injury, Norm explains why they're conduct appears to have been way over the line.  But the bigger issue is what Norm has called race entrepreneurship. As applied here, Norm questions what business Ben Crump has with the Randy Cox case beyond the new requirement that prisoner transport vehicles be equipped with seatbelts. Closing the year out with a bang! What an awesome interview with the Nebraska Director of Economic Development, Tony Goins. As a young father in North Carolina, Tony knew he had to get things in order if he wanted to leave a lasting legacy. If you want people to see you as a trusted expert in your niche, you need to up level your vibe. Let's say you're a new officer. You want your crew to follow you, right? Now how do you get them to do that? One thing that absolutely will NOT work is to order people around arbitrarily. This does nothing but make them annoyed with you. Put yourself in their place: What would get you to follow someone? Chances are, it's an attitude called “command presence.” That's what instills confidence that you know what you're talking about. Back again on Code 3 today to discuss command presence – what it is and why it's important – is Tom Merrill. He's a 35-year fire department veteran and a former chief of the Snyder Fire Department in Amherst, New York. He is now a fire commissioner for the Snyder Fire District. Tom served 26 years as a department officer including 15 years in the chief officer ranks. He has taught at fire service events around western New York as well as at FDIC.
