Dani Almeyda has worked in the health and fitness industry for the last 12 years. Throughout her whole life, health and wellness have had a major influence on her life. Whether it was from her experience as collegiate athlete, as a Director of Campus Recreation, or as a Fitness Professional, her experiences and formal education have provided her with a unique perspective and skillset. Dani is a co-owner of OS Institute in North Carolina and OSi Online, and has a Master's Degree in Exercise Science. She brings an abundance of energy, passion, and an incredible drive to help the world regain its Original Strength. Almeyda, a mother of two, and wife to a firefighter, is dedicated to serving her family and community. Tim Anderson has been a personal trainer for over 20 years. He is an accomplished author and speaker and is known for streamlining complex ideas into simple and applicable information. Esports is a form of organized competition using multiplayer video games. This form of competition has been very popular among high school and college students. The University of Illinois Springfield unveiled their new Esports arena in September 2023. The arena is located in Founders Residence Hall. Jay Swenson UIS Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Zach Logsdon UIS Information Technology Services IT Technical Associate spoke to Community Voices about the journey to bring the esports arena to campus, Zach's process of building the gaming computers, and about the UIS Esports team. Over time and through other roles, he came to realize he loved working with students. A job at IU came open in campus rec and Arvin applied. The rest, as they say, is history. Arvin and Sheffield dive into Arvin's time at IU and serving as the executive director. They look at the current facilities and staffing set-up, to sending all staff through the NIRSA for Recreation and Wellbeing course. With a plethora of experience guiding trips and outdoor jobs, he eventually found himself in Texas, pursuing a career in campus recreation at Sam Houston State University. He gained experience, took trips around the world and realized the outdoor gig just didn't fit with having a two-year-old at home. Transitioning from outdoors programming to an associate director role proved challenging. As such, he looked for other opportunities and ended up at the University of Montana. Having been there since, he shares what Montana has to offer, how his previous experiences outside of campus rec have made him a better leader and what he loves most about his job. Chris Bullard, Senior Coordinator for the Outdoor Program, joins us to talk about the Outdoor Program and Campus Recreation at PSU. We learn how students can explore Oregon's great outdoors with the Outdoor Program's many guided trips and gear rentals, from sea kayaking to snowboarding to climbing, no experience or special equipment necessary. Chris also tells us about the many offerings the recreation center provides, including the pool, climbing walls, weight rooms, indoor track, multi-use rooms, fitness and cardio machines, basketball court, and much more. Students can join an intramural or a pick-up game, attend a yoga class, and go bouldering – it's all included for students enrolled in just one credit or more."

Host Grady Sheffield, the director of campus recreation at Towson University and the senior advisor to the Campus Rec Mastermind Groups, gives you the listener real and authentic conversation between himself and special guest, Tiffany Lomax, the director of Campus Recreation and Wellness Promotion at North Carolina Central University. Lomax's start in the industry happened before she even knew it and continued because of her desire to study abroad in South Korea. Soon, she found herself in the world of campus recreation, specifically in marketing at George Washington University. From there, the rest is history! However, during her time in campus rec Lomax has found herself in a profession where often people see a Black woman first before the rec professional part. She shares on facing microaggressions like comments made in reference to her coming from an HBCU to challenges like taking on a director role at a predominantly white institution in a predominantly white community in Maine. She gets real with some of the tough and painful conversations she's had with staff and leadership when it comes to equity, diversity and inclusion talks that didn't go well. Finally, Lomax speaks on belonging, the weight leaders carry and how she knew she was ready to be a director.

In this episode, we speak with, Kevin Wilson who took over the position of Vice President of Advancement, Athletics, and Campus Recreation in July of 2021. Wilson's responsibilities include fundraising for the university, directing the department of athletics, and overseeing the campus recreation center, the Linc. A proven veteran in both the realms of college athletics and university development, Wilson has experience working at a plethora of different programs, ranging from Historically Black Colleges & Universities to the highest level of NCAA Division I. Wilson's resume boasts success as both a fundraiser and as an athletic administrator, and his vast experience has led to multiple invitations to give presentations at multiple national conferences over the past eight years. So more than pursuing a title, it's vital to find your heart's calling and make your way towards it. That's where real satisfaction comes in. The Importance of Networking in Your Career Kristie obtained a master's degree in public administration. Growing your network and putting yourself out there is the key to success. Look for and join associations or groups that have to do with your trade. Through this, you'll find people to connect with. Kristie went from being an Aquatics Manager to a Parks and Recreation Director. Listen to the podcast to learn how networking helped Kristie do so! Becoming a Director Overnight Kristie felt highly confident going into her Aquatics Manager role because she was a born leader. You have nothing to lose if you put everything out on the table when applying for a job. This also applies to when you feel like you have no experience. The HR Director of El Centro hired Kristie because she was passionate and excited. Soft skills are what employers are looking for; it's something you can't teach. Working as a Parks and Recreation Director People move to communities based on the community services provided. Being a Parks and Recreation Director is coming up with creative programs and events. Kristie loves being a part of the community and getting to know the people in it. When the Writing's on the Wall Kristie later moved to a job that made her realize her ideas and suggestions weren't being seen. The signs become apparent in these situations but sometimes, it's hard to accept them. She realized her calling while working in that role. It was to work with organizations and teams to help them uncover their strengths and work better together. When she left that job, Kristie didn't follow through on her heart's calling. Instead, she went to another job. Kristie ended up having a worse experience in her next job. Because of this, she was asked to leave. Knowing Your Self-Worth Kristie left a fantastic job only to go to two others and not be successful. Sometimes, you are just not the right fit for an organization. It doesn't mean you are not good at what you do. The sooner you realize and recognize this and move forward, the better. KR Dynamics Solutions Kristie is now a success coach and career development expert. She's also a guest lecturer at several universities and does a lot of mentoring. Kristie works with organizations and teams. She does team building, customer service training, leadership, executive coaching, and more. Kristie's advice for people looking to advance: don't think you can't do things. Getting up and doing things despite being terrified is confidence. Your Job Title and Knowing Your Self-Worth Being let go from a role spun Kristie out. She had tied her self-worth to her job title for so long. She's happy and at peace with what she's doing. She's also making a bigger impact. Knowing your self-worth is not tied to your title makes you realize how you have so much more to offer the world. How to Encourage Collaboration Within a Team Know the different personality styles; what works for you will not work for somebody else. It is important to get to know your team. The DiSC personality test allows you to determine your team's strengths and how to communicate accordingly. Make sure that your team is a safe space where people can speak up. Being an extrovert or introvert doesn't mean you're better than the other. Writing a Book Kristie's book project is currently a work in progress. The challenge is committing to the time to do the actual writing. She started with a mind map and broke those topics down to what she wants to talk about. The book is about overcoming obstacles and how to make the next right move in life and work. Juggling Different Roles You need to find the right balance between the things you have to do. Kristie doesn't think there's such a thing as work-life balance; you will always have to prioritize one over the other. Just make sure you don't get stuck in one space for too long. Take the time to rest. Otherwise, you won't be your best self. Kristie's Daily Non-Negotiables Kristie prioritizes moving her body by getting some form of exercise. She also gives importance to drinking water regularly.
