In this week's episode, Mark Shropshire, a renowned figure in the realm of movement assessment and rehabilitation, explains the importance of foundational movement resets like diaphragmatic breathing, head control, rolling, rocking, and crawling. These staples of the 'Original Strength' system are demonstrated to improve core stability, enhance proprioception, and alleviate common aches and pains. Key Takeaways: Foundational Movements: Mark outlines the five crucial resets of the 'Original Strength' system—diaphragmatic breathing, head control, rolling, rocking, and crawling—and their roles in improving stability and mobility. Diaphragmatic Breathing: The critical importance of diaphragmatic breathing is discussed, from its role in core engagement to its effects on the parasympathetic nervous system for better 'rest and digest' functions. Proprioceptive Training: The episode emphasizes the significance of proprioception in maintaining body stability and how fundamental movement patterns enhance proprioceptive feedback. Misconceptions in Fitness: A critical look into common misconceptions like stretching as a one-size-fits-all solution and the fallacy that an impressive physique necessarily indicates optimal health. Holistic Health Approach: Insight into how foundational movements influence the interconnected systems of the body, promoting better neurological and physical health. Tim is passionate about helping people realize they were created to be strong and healthy. He has written and co-written many books on this subject, including The Becoming Bulletproof Project, Habitual Strength, Pressing RESET, and Original Strength Performance. Tim's message is simple yet powerful: We were created to feel good and be strong throughout life. Many systems, philosophies, and assessments start with clients and athletes feeling broken, while Tim's work blends a positive message with functional strength and restorative movements. The longer I go through my journey as a coach, athlete, and mover, the more I value Tim's work, and I have incorporated many of his ideas into my own methods and programming. On today's episode, Tim and I discuss fluidity of movement, body tension, and creativity, followed by a discussion on utilizing a variety of speeds in training. Much of our talk centers around the benefits of slow movements and how these can, in turn, benefit much higher velocity motions, as well as ideas on how these fit in training complexes. Tim speaks on this and much more in this episode. Today's episode is brought to you by TeamBuildr, the Plyomat, and LILA Exogen. Otherwise you're disconnected." - Tim Anderson “So I'm a huge fan of exploring slow motion in movements. Now, I do primarily do that, like during pressing reset, like say for crawls or rolls or rocks. But you can, you can do it with any, any movement whatsoever. And the beautiful thing about going slow, though, is that it teaches you so much about your body, but it also exposes the areas of, of your movement that you don't really have control of yet” - Tim Anderson “Sugar Ray Leonard, like, he was extremely, he was lightning fast, but he would also do super slow shadow boxing to, like, where like it trick photography, slow motion.” - Tim Anderson "It's not that going fast isn't great for you. It's just that it's only one end of the spectrum. You got all this other room that you can play in and learn from that actually will help you move faster when you do want to go fast." - Tim Anderson "So it's not beyond just moving slow. Um, is to. To kind of be curious to see where you can move. Like, a lot of times your body will. It'll give you barriers. You know, a lot of people say, well, I can't move that way because I get stuck right here. Great. Like, use that. That barrier to learn from it." - Tim Anderson

Today's episode features Tim Anderson. Tim is the co-owner of the Original Strength Institute, and has been a personal trainer for over 20 years. He has written and co-written many books on human performance including The Becoming Bulletproof Project, Habitual Strength, Pressing RESET, and Original Strength Performance. When it comes down to it, his message is simple yet powerful: We were created to feel good and be strong throughout life. It is because of Tim that I've developed a fascination with crawling, and largely, a fascination with bodyweight training in general. So often, our thought on bodyweight training is one that revolves around ways to produce copious amounts of muscle tension, such as in gymnastics, which is great, and do so in volumes that can produce slabs of muscle. At the same time, bodyweight training is much more than simply looking for alternative ways to seek hypertrophy. Training with one's bodyweight allows for a variety of reciprocal movement actions, where energy is stored and released, transmitting itself through the hands, spine, pelvis and feet. Training with one's bodyweight also allows us to hone on rudimentary and reflexive movement skills, such as crawling. Tim appeared on episode #154 of the podcast, talking about the power of crawling and reflexive movement. On the tail end of that show, Tim discussed rolling for a few minutes, but I wanted to get him back to dig more thoroughly into that topic. On today's show, Tim goes into the benefits of rolling, and how he progresses and instructs it for his clients. He speaks about rolling on the level of the vestibular system, joint rotation (particularly internal rotation), the gait cycle, sensation and awareness, and more. At the end of the show, we talk about modulating speeds and rhythms in ground-work, and finally, Tim gets into how his own personal workouts and training have progressed over time, and how rolling plays an important part of his own daily strength routine. Timestamps and Main Points: 3:28 – The purpose of rolling for human performance, and how Tim progresses it for clients 7:09 – The possibility of rolling to improve balance, coordination and dexterity through stimulation of the vestibular system 13:46 – Tim's description of segmental rolling and how to progress it over time 23:30 – How much rolling Tim prescribes for various clients and individuals 26:53 – The specific elements in the process of rolling that helps to “connect the X” of the torso 32:21 – Ideas on using rolling or similar connective movements between more intensive main training sets 39:17 – How Tim looks at rolling and similar movements in light of their capacity to help improve internal rotation in individuals 46:44 – Addressing various speeds or rhythms to training movements 50:27 – What Tim's early workouts looked like, and what his training has transitioned to now that he has gotten into his Original Strength workouts 58:29 – Ideas on super-slow crawling and the benefits of controlled bodyweight movement 1:04:02 – What the head and eye position should be like in the course of rolling “Our skin is our largest tactile organ, and when we roll, we are stimulating the skin a lot” “If you could imagine that your body is a sponge, and everything out there is information; so when you are rolling on the ground, you are trying to take that sponge and soak in the information everywhere” “If we do these three things, we'll more than likely stay healthy throughout our lives: The first one is breath properly with your diaphragm, nasal breathe, keep the tongue on the roof of your mouth.

There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” Dr Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience: “Whenever you are sparring, your mind will have a given direction of focus. HEY MONEY is your new secret weapon for advice in your personal finances. No time to listen? BUMMER. Here's some of what happened:Show Notes:Question 1:I switched jobs and I have a retirement account from my last job with a financial company. My new job also uses the same company. I got a call from them asking me to rollover my old account into an IRA with them, but it makes more sense to me to take my old account and put it into my new 401(k) account. Does it really matter?“Pete: I'm upset. Institutional fees are generally lower than individual fees. This is likely a money grab. Go with the new 401(k).Damian: “Maybe.” Let's look at the fees of the transaction and all of the investment options. For more on this and tips to look out for from Pete, check out the full show!Story Time!“My Grandpa Dunn, as a child of the Great Depression, learned to make do with what they had and nothing more. He was a very sensible, prudent person. He went on to fight in WWII, was stranded on a beach overnight, had to find their way to a ship, etc. He taught me about money, saving his coins in a Pringles can. His generation would laugh at a “Never Satisfied” bumper sticker. I think there's a sensibility reckoning as it relates to materialism and consumerism. Our financial habits have gotten worse year after year. I'm not sure we can come back from our addition to a comfortable lifestyle and regain that prudence his generation once had. What do you think, Damian?“Damian: I hope you're right, thinking we will change. Most of us have very comfortable lifestyles we're raising kids in. My kids are going to have an expected lifestyle where they graduate from college. The chances are probably lower than they should be that they're not going to have a period of struggle where they worry about putting food on the table. We try to solve our kids' problems. Community, confidence, and learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable are all values we should learn and embrace as we age. Creating a safe place to encourage people to combine faith and exercise is something Dani Almeyda, co-founder of Original Strength, is immensely proud of. CREATING A SAFE SPACE There seems to be this unwritten rule that as we age, we believe we’re no longer capable of having a base level of fitness, ability, and strength. That’s simply not true! Dani has designed a fitness atmosphere and method that encourages relearning and resetting our movement, breathing, and in turn, mindset. Dani explains what happens to our bodies when we learn how to actually breathe properly. Your body and mind become much more in sync and in tune. She also tells us how you can use the same techniques she teaches at Original Strength to help reset any stressful moments in your life. It all comes down to the breath. The other element of training that’s important to Dani is creating a loving and comfortable community and environment for women to learn in. When we feel loved and supported, we’re more likely to be more adventurous, be happier, and try new movements. But above all, Dani embodies a Christian spirit in everything she does at Original Strength. She believes that a person’s original strength comes from God and that it’s possible for all of us to regain this strength of body and of soul. This is what her women’s communities have at their heart - a calling to speak and express ourselves as God’s true wonder and beauty. Dani encourages women to find a community of girlfriends they’re comfortable learning and growing with. She also thinks we should all practice being uncomfortable as there are so many situations in our lives where we will experience this. When was the last time you tried something and struggled at it? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode Why getting older is no excuse for losing strength and ability What happens when you learn to breathe properly How you can press reset on any stressful moments in your life What happens when you feel loved and comfortable How community can encourage you to try new movements Where your original strength comes from Why women need a community of girlfriends they feel comfortable with Why you should practice being uncomfortable Quotes “We try to plant these seeds of hope in every single time we’re with somebody. Hope feels good. Giving and helping people see, understand, and feel hopeful is a really good way to get them more comfortable in exploring their relationship with God.” (23:06) “Being relatable is important. If people can’t relate to you and you can’t be vulnerable enough to share your own life, struggles, failures, and what you learned then it makes it really hard to create relationships that are meaningful.” (34:40) “Getting comfortable being uncomfortable will make you so much stronger at everything in life because you’re always going to have uncomfortable situations. So if you know how to move through the discomfort, you get really comfortable being uncomfortable.” (45:21) Links Find Dani Almeyda Online Follow Dani Almeyda on Instagram Follow Original Strength on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube Join my Free Webinar: How To Get A Regular Period Without Birth Control Find Fed and Fearless Online Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? I was scrolling through Instagram the other day and ran across post after post gearing up for 2020. People are READY to hustle, go crazy cramming the to-do list, and conquer the world on two hours of sleep. No breaks allowed. It's beautiful to have a vision and big dreams. In fact, it's healthy. When we keep going without pushing reset or taking a season to rest, it actually does more harm than good. In episode 47 of A Drop of Sunshine podcast I talk about how we cannot recharge our energy without pushing the pause button. When we step away, regain our energy, then we can come back refreshed with clear intentions.. Might I add.. the proper energy it will take to get it done. I'm Back! at 226.8 After writing a book, I'm back and up in my weight. I could cry and beat myself up, but I just looked at the calendar and said: "October 1st the day I turn this thing around." I reset some data in my apps, starting getting up a little earlier, walking a little more, paying attention to my water intake. I've even cleaned off my exercise bike as its fall in Ohio, and only a matter of time until the snowfalls. Don't let yourself get complacent with your health. What used to scare the crap out of me is now slowly becoming the norm. That is something that can't happen. These happen in small increments, and we kind of let them fly under the radar as these bad habits and inches, um, inch their way into our lives. I did find an article on what famed Quarterback Tom Brady (he is a bit of a freak of Nature). See it at https://tb12sports.com/blog/what-does-tom-brady-eat I'm glad to be back, and ready to get motivated. Thanks for being a patron!
What happens when you have experienced a tragedy that you were not prepared for? In this fourth sermon in this series on the women in the genealogy of Jesus, we look at Bathsheeba. History has mischaracterized what happened to her, suggesting that she was a willing participant in her affair with David. However, she is able to press reset in her life after being raped, becoming a widow, and the death of a child through the birth of Solomon. We invite you to listen to this sermon and be encouraged. As always, you can visit us online at www.stmarkcme.org or in person for one of our worship and learning opportunities at 402 S. 3rd Street, Wills Point, TX. We look forward to seeing you. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/stmarkcme/support
Today’s episode features writer and personal trainer Tim Anderson. Tim has been a personal trainer for over 20 years. He has written and co-written many books on the subject of primal bodyweight movements, including The Becoming Bulletproof Project, Habitual Strength, Pressing RESET, and Original Strength Performance. When it comes down to it, his message is simple yet powerful: We were created to feel good and be strong throughout life. Several years ago, I bought one of Tim’s books on Kindle, and was totally floored with the simple, but powerful concept of crawling as an essential athletic, and human performance tool. As an athlete who has lost a significant amount of my innate speed and power ability through my late 20’s and early 30’s, despite lifting more weights than ever, I have always been on the search for ways to reclaim the inner power and movement ability of my youth. One thing that I’ve found to be a cornerstone in this reflexive or innate strength has been taking on the training methods of Tim Anderson and Original Strength. Today’s podcast is about just that: helping athletes to reclaim their reflexive strength. Tim gives his take on how he first got interested in crawling and acquiring reflexive strength, the basics of crawl-based training, guidelines on breathing and rolling, and how learning “Original Strength” has changed Tim’s view of corrective exercise and addressing movement dysfunction (and why we should shy away from those terms). Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points How Tim got into crawl training The basics of “reflexive strength” How Tim’s relationship with traditional barbell oriented training has changed as he has gone through reflexive and crawl based training methods How Tim starts his clients in their training program Tim’s take on common crawl variations and add-ons Ideas on working with athletes who have a lot of lateral “sway” while crawling Tim’s take on the learning process in athletic movement Basic guidelines in Tim’s process for getting athlete’s breathing back on track Ideas on using crawling as a preferential mode of conditioning Rolling as the foundation of our gait pattern How original strength means have changed Tim’s view of “corrective” exercise “(Crawling) was almost like an elixir” “What I noticed that (after crawling) I was so much stronger at all the other stuff I was doing (weight training)” “Reflexive strength is the strength we are all designed to have that is supposed to be our foundation, it is both reactive strength and proactive strength; where your body is able to respond when something happens to it, but it is also able to anticipate the need to move before something happens to it… it is supposed to be extremely fast and without thought” “Crawling ties the body together in such a way, that it connects everything about you and gives you a great foundation of reflexive strength” “To me, strength is the ability to live your life the way you want to and do what you want to do, without strength you don’t have health” “There are huge gaps in traditional strength training (in terms of transfer to movement quality on the field)” “Probably 90% of what I do is original strength, pressing reset through crawling and the other resets” “So when I’m talking about looking to see if they have their reflexive strength, it is about how beautifully, and how easily and how pretty they can move” “I don’t even worry about how long they can crawl, it’s more about can they crawl pretty, does it look good? does it look like poetry? If it looks anything less than that, we got some work to do” “The core is instinctual, and intuitive and reactive, and it knows what to do. A child knows how to brace, and it’s reflexive”
Proper Dress for Podcasting We're podcasting earlier in the morning after a couple failed attempts at recording the show and Jennifer is surprised how dapper Greg looks (or as dapper as Greg gets when it's warm outside. Analysis Paralysis Overcoming the fear of a big decision, and jumping ahead, trusting God to pick up the debris. We Click The Big Red Button This week begins a new reset for us as we have all new reward tiers, bonus content, and more as we move to a monthly instead of per-show Patreon co-producer setup. Click here to become a brand new Patreon co-producer of our show and get some cool rewards! As we discuss in much more detail, the changes to Patreon have already gone into effect, and it is important to us that we keep our friends and supporters like you up to date on changes that may affect you because we really value your input! As we've discussed on recent episodes of Adventures in Imperfect Living, over the last few weeks and months, Jennifer and I have been looking at three major areas that impact our podcast (and our hopes for future content): How we create new and ongoing content that's enjoyable to us to create and helpful and entertaining for you to enjoy, How a different Patreon payment structure can support ongoing creation of even more exciting new content, Our current reward and tier structure for our Patreon page. As we've hinted on recent episodes, we've come up with a new framework for these three areas that we're really excited about and plan to roll out in the next few days. How We Create Content As you know, we love making content. From podcasts and videos to comic strips and written content to experimental new media and livestreams, we want to create content that energizes us to make even more (i.e., when it's fun and not work it inspires us with even more creativity), and serves the purpose of entertaining or inspiring others. The difficulty for us is the fact that A) our time — like yours — is limited, and sometimes we WANT to create something for you, but can't justify the time because we also have to B) do work that directly supports our family financially. This often means that videos we're ready to film, audio content we're prepared to record, comic strips we're ready to draw, and eBooks and other tools we want to write never happen because we have to do other less meaningful (but necessary) work behind the scenes that supports us but doesn't necessarily change lives. As our coproducers have already noticed in recent weeks, we're striving to include more bonus content such as behind the scenes photos, stories, videos, and recordings exclusively for our co-producers. This is just a sampling of the kind of stuff we want to do for you! Evaluating a Different Patreon Structure We started using Patreon to supplement our work back in October 2014. For those of you who have been with us this entire time, you know how important this has been for us personally, and we can never thank you enough for your generous support of our work and our family. Your patronage has kept us recording week after week even in the midst of cross country moves, debilitating illnesses, huge family transitions, and more. It's allowed us to share our faith and encourage others in their walk with Christ. It's allowed us to do things we never could have done otherwise. Honestly, Patreon is currently the number one way we support our family at this time. And while it's risky to put all of our eggs in one basket, this is the only basket we currently have, and we'd like to grow it. After much evaluation, discernment, and prayer, we believe the time has come for us to switch to a monthly Patreon structure instead of the per-episode structure we've used for the past four-plus years. What does this mean? If you're already a co-producer, hopefully not much will change for you, and what changes there are will be minimal in terms of your financial commitment. If you give $1 a show now with a max of $5 a month, you'll now be at the $5/month tier instead of the $1/show tier. If you give $10 a show with a max of $50 a month, you'll now be at the $50/month tier. Why do this? Honestly, because there are many times we want to make a bonus episode or create some other type of content but DON'T because we don't want to charge you extra and accidentally make you feel like we're taking advantage of your generosity. Secondly, we hope that a monthly tier structure will encourage more listeners to sign up if they know they'll be getting early access to more bonus content before everyone else. For the past four years, we've never been able to break past the plateau of 200 co-producers (we're currently at 174) and we'd like to change that. Changes in Tier Structures and Rewards Starting immediately, we're completely overhauling our reward and tier structure. The past structure was overly complicated to maintain, and we're fairly certain that we've inadvertently missed providing rewards to some of you who have earned them. Additionally, the rewards we've offered (such as paintings, comic strips, etc.) have required more time to fulfill than I've personally been able to manage. Therefore, we're starting over with a clean slate and will providing rewards at various tiers to all of you that we think will be even more fun. Going forward, our rewards will include access to more patron-exclusive content, as well as bonus swag such as stickers, drinking glasses, and other surprises sent directly to your home as our way to say THANK YOU. $5/Month - Community Forum Join the conversation with other co-producers by commenting in the Patreon-exclusive feed. Share your ideas and thoughts with other Patrons of Adventures in Imperfect Living, Greg's New Mental Health Show, Rosary Cast, as well as Greg and Jennifer themselves. Access to exclusive behind-the-scenes Patreon LENS videos (similar to Facebook Stories and SnapChat) where we'll share what's going on in our lives and take you along for the adventure! $10/Month - Swag in the Mail! Exclusive surprise swag sent to you in the mail after three months of patronage Adventures in Imperfect Living sticker. Access to Livestreams. Access to video episodes of Adventures in Imperfect Living Plus all previous rewards. $25/Month - Coffee Mug Exclusive Imperfect Living coffee mug! Plus all previous rewards. $100/Month We don't expect many of you to support at this amount. However, some of you have asked and we're deeply grateful to you. Our personal email address. You'll be able to reach us with thoughts and ideas whenever you like, and we'll respond! Plus all previous rewards. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO (IF YOU'RE ALREADY A CO-PRODUCER): Sign onto your Patreon account and confirm your monthly tier level (you can also upgrade at this time). Confirm your credit/debit card on file is your correct one. Be sure to provide a valid mailing address as well as your first and last name as we plan on sending you a thank you in the mail very soon.
