In this special episode, we welcome author and storyteller Martin Goodman to explore the extraordinary living story of the Bishnoi people—a community in the Western Thar Desert of India who have made protecting life, in all its forms, their deepest devotion. Three centuries ago, 363 Bishnoi villagers led by Amrita Devi gave their lives to defend the sacred khejri trees from destruction, speaking the words still taught to Bishnoi children today: “My head for a tree is a cheap price to pay.” But the Bishnoi are not just a story of sacrifice from the past—they are still here, still tending, still fighting for the beings and ecosystems that sustain us all. Martin shares the serendipitous journey that brought him to the Bishnoi, the profound lessons he learned among them, and the creation of his new book, My Head for a Tree: The Extraordinary Story of the Bishnoi, Guardians of Nature. We talk about devotion, care as daily practice, the ecology of love, and what it means to live in relationship with the smallest creatures. We hope this conversation reminds you: Love is not only an action. It is also a meditation. A daily practice of belonging. A vow, renewed again and again, to defend life-affirming practices. ✨ Highlights include: The origin story behind the term "treehugger" and why it still matters today The 29 rules of the Bishnoi faith: a life built around ecological care The emotional and spiritual legacy of Amrita Devi's sacrifice How the Bishnoi resist extractive forces with devotion and fierce tenderness Reflections on love as an ecosystem, not just an emotion How we can follow the Bishnoi's example without appropriating their sacred ways
Wrapping up Earth Month, I speak with JAMES THORNTON, founder of ClientEarth, the preeminent environmental law group, with 300 lawyers holding governments and companies accountable across the globe. He steps down as the group's president this month after 18 years. Their work training the Chinese - including their Supreme Court - in environmental law is remarkable. What I've learned about their successes has given me hope – something that can feel all too endangered these days. Listen in, if you could use a bit of the same. You can learn more at Clientearth.orgThornton-04-14-2025-transcript
Who could talk for over an hour and a half about the Daniel Radcliffe/Adam Driver-starring romcom? James Thornton and Andrew Hunter Scholey can of course.... Take the romantic plunge as they discuss the careers of the film's young cast, some random hot takes about relationships and dating and ultimately.... Why did no one see this (mostly) charming take on the old genre.

The historical log drivers and their importance in Canada's development as a country; the song's composer Wade Hemsworth and his influence on Canadian music; the 60's Montreal folk scene; Quebec separatism and the 1980 referendum; the film's animator and director John Weldon and his prolific career; the Canada Vignettes and their role in the NFB but also Canadian identity; and finally (*breathe...*) what do they finally have to say about the film itself?

Rev. Patrick Hines, Rev. James Thornton, & Rev. Henry Johnson walk through a goldmine of biblical truth in Ephesians 1:1-14.
In this fascinating interview, James Thornton, founder and CEO of ClientEarth, discusses his latest book Nature, My Teacher, offering a unique perspective on the intersections of law, nature, and spirituality. Reflecting on his decades-long career as an environmental lawyer, Thornton shares how his work to protect the environment has been shaped by his deep reverence for nature and his experiences as a Zen Buddhist priest. The book delves into his personal philosophy and the lessons he's learned from nature, which continue to inspire his work in environmental advocacy.Thornton reflects on his journey with ClientEarth, an environmental law charity that has made significant strides in using the law to hold corporations and governments accountable for environmental harm. His experiences span across continents, from the United States to Europe and China, where he has helped shape legal systems that protect the planet. One notable highlight in the interview is Thornton's experience in China, where he has been working to help develop laws that empower citizens to hold polluters, including government-owned entities, accountable. This groundbreaking work aligns with China's ambition to build an "ecological civilization," an effort enshrined in its constitution and reflected in transformative advancements in green technology.Throughout the conversation, Thornton weaves together the themes of his book with his practical experience in environmental law, illustrating how his spiritual beliefs, legal expertise, and deep connection to nature converge to guide his approach to sustainability. Nature, My Teacher serves as both a reflection on Thornton's remarkable career and an urgent call to reconnect with the natural world, offering readers a hopeful yet pragmatic roadmap for tackling the climate crisis.James Thornton is the founding CEO of ClientEarth, a path-breaking law firm which uses advocacy, litigation and research to address the greatest challenges of our time – including nature loss and climate change. ClientEearth has an extra-ordinary record of success built on solid law and science – and has brought about fundamental change in the way environmental protections are made and enforced across Europe. The New Statesman has named James as one of 10 people who could change the world. James has twice won Leader of the Year at the Business Green Awards. The Financial Times awarded him its Special Achievement accolade at the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards. James is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest; his latest book Nature, My Teacher: How to Be Alive in a World under Threat was published in April.
James Thornton is back because he wanted to discuss "New Waterford Girl" (1999), a unique coming of age film set in Cape Breton. His conversation with host Andrew Hunter Scholey covers a wide variety of topics, among which are the surprisingly fascinating early career of the film's director Alan Moyle, life in small towns, as well as how the film's plot plays with how certain aspects of women are portrayed in media.
With the passing of Canadian acting legend Donald Sutherland, Andrew Hunter Scholey and James Thornton decided to delay their previously planned episode. Instead they are discussing Sutherland's films produced in Canada and abroad. Then their discussion delves into one of Sutherland's most overlooked films: the medical drama, "Threshold" (1981).

Ever run into one of those people whose resumes are so bloody full of awesome accomplishments that you wonder why they even let you take up precious space on earth? Well this is one of those guys. James Thornton is a world-renowned environmental lawyer, author, poet, and Zen Buddhist priest. The New Statesman named him as one of 10 people who could change the world, and he has won the Financial Times Lifetime Achievement Award for Innovation in Law. James is the founder and president of Client Earth, the leading global not-for-profit law group who represent the natural world, advocate for policy changes that protect it, and hold governments and corporations accountable where policies have been violated. James is also the author of Client Earth which won the Judge's Choice Business Book of the Year Award. In 2021, he was a judge of the Laurel Prize for the world's best collection of eco-poetry, pointing to his deep understanding of the genre. Nature, My Teacher is his latest work. It is divided into 12 books, each a sequence of intimate essays, James investigates the nature of human consciousness. James discusses his own anxiety, why anxiety is a rational response to climate change, and he explains why environmental problems are mental problems. Both from his work as an environmental lawyer and his role as a Zen Buddhist priest, James shows us ways to find hope in a world under threat. This book is a meditation on those principles that will serve to both ease our fears and invigorate us to take action. Of course, I kid about those of us lesser mortals "taking up space" here. We all are worth something. Still. People like James do make one take stock.

This one is a doozy. Tackling a giant of Canadian cinema, Andrew Hunter Scholey and James Thornton sit down to discuss Norman McLaren. Possibly the most influential filmmaker in Canadian history, there is a lot to unpack. To discuss Norman one has to discuss the history of the National Film Board of Canada and it's impact on Canadian film. His pioneering animation techniques and the state of animation in North America in the 1930's to the 1960s. And that's just to start. Oh, and they eventually get around to discussing his 1952 Academy Award winning film "Neighbours".
Regular co-host (and big Transformers fan) James Thornton has been after Andrew Hunter Scholey for years to talk about Beast Wars, as well as Vancouver animation studio Mainframe. So Hunter-- for the first time-- sat down and watched some Beast Wars episodes James had picked out. How did that go? How confused did Hunter get? How do copyright rules make things even more confusing? One has to listen to this huge deep dive to find out!
We're keeping the laughs going as we continue our For the Love of Funny series–and this week we've got Kevin James Thornton, a comedian and entertainer, who, after spending his youth in a fundamentalist church in the 90's, found a lot to laugh about. After moving to LA to make his way on stages at the Comedy Store and as an actor, Kevin wasn't sure he was happy with how his life was going. After a move to Nashville and some serious contemplation about where to go next, the pandemic hit. Bored at home, Kevin discovered a little thing called TikTok and decided it might be fun to share some of the stories of what it was like to grow up gay in a fundamentalist church in the 90's, and much to his surprise his videos were wildly successful. At 50 years old, Kevin had found his niche, and now he brings his unique brand of comedy (often sung as a story through an auto-tune device—because it was the 90's, after all) ) with audiences across the U.S. and Europe and with over 2 million followers on social media. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! After college, James Thornton returned to the family farm and was looking forward to his first harvest when his dad was run over by a tractor. Six weeks in ICU and months of recovery meant that James was facing his first harvest without his father and mentor. Neighbors stepped in. Retired farmers stepped up. A community of experienced farmers walked him through that harvest and helped him make it a success. While we may not face difficulties this extreme, we all need a good support system. During times of stress, financial difficulty, illness, injury, or other tough situations, a good support system can keep us going. “It's humbling when your neighbor pulls in there, into a field that you can't get to… and they knock it out for you. It was a blessing and I saw a lot of good come out of something that was traumatic… That was the first crisis of my life that I saw God bring a lot of good out of.” – James Thornton “Don't be too busy to take care of yourself.” – Archie MasonThat Farm Life Podcast is a resource of Agri Health Network. Story This episode focuses on what being a B Corp means, what makes the B Corp certification a unique standard, and how becoming a certified B Corp transforms businesses' operations to do better for people and the planet. March is B Corp month, and we are celebrating it by bringing back some of our greatest podcasts featuring B Corp certified businesses and their inspiring journeys: James Thornton from Intrepid Travel; Karli Hiscock from Bates Well; and Carolina Miranda CEO of Cultivating Capital. Highlights Intrepid Travel offers sustainable travel experiences for its customers, an exemplary example of how businesses can balance purpose and profit. Intrepid went through a three-year journey to become a B Corp, in which they assessed the way they interacted with customers, the impact they had on the environment, and their relationships with shareholders. James highlights how B Corp helped Intrepid address their supplier issues and the lack of diversity within their organisation. “We've certainly found that the B Corp certification helps provide a point of distinction” - James Thornton. Bates Well was founded in 1970 with a set of core principles which had a clear purpose: “doing good for people”. They have always been a purpose-driven business but becoming a B Corp in 2015 hugely impacted their day-to-day operations. Through the B Corp certification, they have been driving staff and client engagement and improving their culture's synergy. Carolina helps businesses to operate in ways that are more socially and environmentally sustainable, particularly for small businesses that want to make a difference. The most common issue that SMEs come across when embedding sustainability is the lack of support from management. Consumers are recognising what the B Corp certification means, and actively looking to do businesses with organisations who are more socially and environmentally sustainable. This is a big incentive for companies to become a B Corp and improve their social and environmental impact.
