In this podcast episode, Nicole O'Byrne talks to Jonathan Swainger about his book “The Notorious Georges: Crime and Community in British Columbia's Northern Interior, 1909-25”, published by UBC Press in 2023. In The Notorious Georges, Jonathan Swainger explores how the local pursuit of respectability collided with caricatures of a riotously ill-mannered settlement frontier of Prince George, British Columbia, in its early years. Anxious that the Georges were being overlooked by the provincial government and venture capitalists, municipal leaders blamed Indigenous and mixed-heritage people, non-preferred immigrants, and transient laborers for local crime. Swainger combs through police and legal records, government publications, and media commentary to demonstrate that the reputation was not only exaggerated, but also unfair as “respectable” white residents were responsible for the lion's share of the disorder. This lively account ultimately tells us about more than a particular community's identity. It also sheds light on small-town disaffection and unease with a diminished place in modern Canada. Readers interested in the history of the Canadian West, and in particular crime, social reform, and community history, will find this a fascinating and accessible exploration of the northern BC interior. Jonathan Swainger has been a professor of history at the University of Northern British Columbia since 1992. After eight years teaching in the Peace River region, he relocated to the main campus in Prince George where he has worked since 2001. His research interests are Canadian legal and crime history, and he is particularly interested in crime in the Peace River region from that took place between 1910 to 1960. To test his determination, Persons' parents lied about his age (he was 12 years old) to enroll him in a dinosaur hunting exhibition in Wyoming's Glenrock Badlands. “My parents were very concerned about this career path I'd chosen,” explains Persons. “They thought, we'll send him to this camp, throw him into the deep end in the hot Wyoming sun with a shovel and pickaxe for a couple of weeks, and we'll see if he still wants to stick with it. And as it happened, I fell in love with the work and the environment.”Since that initial expedition, Persons has returned to the Badlands without exception every single summer. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital

Continuing the series on the 7 Deadly Sins, Greg and Ed address the envious Envy. Of course, we love Bangkok, but no place is perfect - so, what are some things in other countries that we are envious of from our perch here? Greg begins by looking over the fence at coffee culture in Vietnam. Presumably due to French influence, Vietnam has an insane number of local cafes that take coffee (and ice cream, as Ed points out) deadly seriously. The strict government helps to keep Western chains to a minimum, and the result is a coffee lovers paradise. Ed starts his list by reminiscing about his early days in Thailand when there were no legal closing times, and Bangkok was like New York - a city that never sleeps. As old farts, Greg and Ed might not take advantage of it now, but that doesn't mean they can't miss it on principle. Next, Greg laments that lack of school bus infrastructure that he grew up with in Canada, where most kids can walk half a block, jump on a safe school bus, and end up at school a few minutes later. The reality in Bangkok is far more dire, as Greg has explained on previous shows. Ed follows with his jealousy of the safe roads in Japan and elsewhere, where a person can go on a bike or motorcycle ride without having to say goodbyes to all their loved ones.  Last, Greg reveals his sensitive side (who knew?) with an admission that he misses Autumn, an entire season that basically doesn't exist in the tropics. Ed concurs, given that the fall is particularly beautiful in the American Midwest, as it is in the Canadian West. Ed finishes with a mini-rant on freedom of speech, which is not just an abstract principle but actually affects everyone in Thailand, both locals and expats alike. That being said, the guys still love living in Thailand. Go figure.  Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.

In the early 1800's buffalo (also called bison) roamed the American and Canadian West in the tens of millions, and the lives of the Plains Indians centered around the massive beasts. The buffalo provided food as well as skins for clothing, blankets, tents, and other leather items. Their dried manure was used for fuel. Indians followed the herds, taking what they needed and teaching the next generation to hunt. Theirs was a buffalo-based culture.

Today we're sitting down with one of my favourite photographers—Kyler Zeleny. Kyler's work documents the small towns and culture of the Canadian West, and is not only impressive visually, but also has incredible depth, and a very strong direction and purpose behind it.In this interview, we talk about the importance of photo books, long terms projects and finding direction in your work, having an end goal in sight, failing as an artist, and the act of photographing strangers. This is one of the longer interviews so far, but I really think it's full of a lot of valuable advice, especially when it comes to long term projects and photo books. Almost as early as Jews made the prairies and Western Canada their home, they began to build community institutions. Winnipeg was for decades the hub of Western Canadian Jewish life, and was home to the Canadian West's only Jewish orphanage.  As part of her PhD dissertation in history, Sharon Graham has delved into the archives to discover some of the stories and situations that made the orphanage both a necessary and vital part of Jewish life.  I spoke with Sharon in her kitchen, and Ronnie dog was there too.

From 1857 to 1859, five men set out from the Red River area and began exploring and surveying the Canadian West. Their surveys would help lead the railway through in three decades time, and also change the western industry from fur trading to agriculture.  They would spur on European settlement, which would also push the Indigenous off their lands.
