In this episode of Star Warsologies, we share the recording of our our Star Wars Celebration Japan panel "Droids, Artificial Intelligence, and Sentience" Panel description: R2-D2 and C-3PO. BB-8. Battle droids. Star Wars isn't Star Wars without its lovable droids. We'll examine the science of robots, the programming of personality and the ethics of sentient mechanicals in society, plus go behind the scenes on designing droids for the movies. Why do droids in Star Wars look the way they do? Why do we all love R2-D2? How close are we to having droid intelligence and personality in our own world? Let's go inside the gears and processing units to explore all the possibilities. Our team of experts includes Yukie Nagai (Project Professor, International Research Center for Neurointelligence, University of Tokyo), Fon Davis (ILM Model Maker - Star Wars), Chris Kempshall (author, Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire and The History and Politics of Star Wars) and Joel Welch (PhD Law candidate at Western University, Emerging Technology Policies & SciFi). Moderated by James Floyd (Star Wars Insider; Star Warsologies, Star Wars Crossword Puzzles). Show Links: Check out Yukie Nagai's robotics website. Check out Chris Kempshall's website. Season 6 continues! We are a part of Star Wars Podcast Day for our fourth year in a row! Today, we celebrate the 26th anniversary of the very first Star Wars podcast: Jedi Talk, which premiered in 1999. . On our premiere episode, we discussed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire with Dr. Chris Kempshall, and now we're witnessing life imitating art. Andrés Alvarez from Sithty Minutes joins us as guest host to chat about a whirlwind of things! From some quick news regarding updates on Rey's New Jedi Order film with the hiring of George Nolfi as writer, to a review of Alex Segura's The Battle of Jakku comic book series, we dissect our expectations for Star Wars in 2025 and how the battles in pages and screens help us process the current events we're going through. . Andrés brings his unique political perspective on how we interpret our space-opera stories, but also on how we confront and face social and political upheavals. Join us as we find strength, comfort, and joy in Star Wars and continue to energize our communal bonds. We hope you enjoy this one and continue being part of our community! . #StarWarsPodcastDay #SWPD2025 • • • Triad of the Force is a channel which was featured on the Podcast Stage at Star Wars Celebration 2022 and 2023, featuring Nani and Gus, lifelong Puerto Rican friends who after years of discussing the media they love, came together and created their show. The Star Wars universe gets a lot of attention for its lightsabers, space battles, and witty droids. But over the decades, a rich lore has developed around its history and politics. This month Angus, Chris and Jessica discuss Jessica's professorial inaugural lecture, 'No (Wo)man's Land: writing history at the intersection of gender and First World War studies'. Along the way we consider the problem of masculinity as an empty analytic category, the importance of the centenary for the study of the First World War and what Jessica might have done if she hadn't gone in to academia. There is also a sneak preview of exciting forthcoming and future projects from all three of us. DEATH STARS AND DEMOCRACY The hugely popular Star Wars films famously came about from George Lucas's desire to tell a ‘Vietnam War in space'. Since then, the Star Wars films have always focused on repurposing contemporary events in a science fiction setting. We'll discover the fascinating ways in which Star Wars is inspired by real-world events and history. This event explores the films and their responses to real world moments. We also look at the books and computer games in the franchise, to see how they responded to the fall of the Soviet Union, genocides and ethnic cleansing in the 1990s, and both 9/11 and the Global War on Terror.

Star Warsologies hosted "Andor, the Empire, and a History of Resistance" panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April 2023 in London. Because the panel audio ended up not recorded by accident, we invited the original panelists back to re-create the panel and add some new content, just for our listeners. Coming back we have Chris Kempshall, Rebecca Harrison, Oli Mould, and Jake Rowlett. Unfortunately panelist Prof. Manuel Barcia was unable to rejoin us. Moderated by James Floyd, one of the hosts of Star Warsologies. Panel description: Star Wars is full of conflict between good and evil, and the stories of the galaxy far, far away center on that fight against oppression. Using real world history of resistance and rebellions, we will examine the entire saga and the Andor series in particular to see how and why our heroes seek to stand against the Galactic Empire in their own ways. Our panelists include Chris Kempshall (author, The History and Politics of Star Wars: Death Stars and Democracy; co-author, Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy), Rebecca Harrison (author, BFI Classics: The Empire Strikes Back), Manuel Barcia, Oli Mould, and Jake Rowlett. Join host James Floyd (Star Wars Insider regular contributor, Star Warsologies podcast) in exploring the freedom fighters that helped topple the Empire. In Star Warsologies, hosts James Floyd and Melissa Miller combine their love of Star Wars with their keen interest in all things academic by asking experts about how their field is represented in a galaxy far, far away. It's a monthly podcast about science and Star Wars! Chris Kempshall's The History and Politics of Star Wars: Death Stars and Democracy (Routledge, 2022) provides the first detailed and comprehensive examination of all the materials making up the Star Wars franchise relating to the portrayal and representation of real-world history and politics. Drawing on a variety of sources, including films, published interviews with directors and actors, novels, comics, and computer games, this volume explores the ways in which historical and contemporary events have been repurposed within Star Wars. It focuses on key themes such as fascism and the Galactic Empire, the failures of democracy, the portrayal of warfare, the morality of the Jedi, and the representations of sex, gender, and race. Through these themes, this study highlights the impacts of the fall of the Soviet Union, the War on Terror, and the failures of the United Nations upon the ‘galaxy far, far away'. By analysing and understanding these events and their portrayal within Star Wars, it shows how the most popular media franchise in existence aims to speak about wider contemporary events and issues. If you are interested in the purchase of the book, you may use the following code for a 25% discount: HPSW25. Roberto Mazza is visiting professor at Northwestern University. We've got a Star Wars fan in No.10 – Sunak collects lightsabers – but is there real political meaning to the tale of empires and rebels? Chris Kempshall, historian and author of The History and Politics of Star Wars: Death Stars and Democracy, talks to Andrew Harrison about Star Wars' roots as a Vietnam allegory; what the Empire can tell us about fascism; why the Republic is a bad advert for democracy; and why Andor is the best political drama on TV right now. The band was formed in 2012 when a few longtime friends and high school classmates got together in a basement to cover their favorite songs. As the band grew and evolved they traded covers for original music and began to develop a live improvisational chemistry that would come to define their sound. They released their debut self-titled EP in January 2015, a blues and garage-rock influenced set that compiles four highlights from the band's early material. After the EP's release, the band took a drastic sonic turn, opting for more lush, mellow, and psychedelic textures. This approach culminated in their first full-length album Live at the Fillmore, released in August of 2016.
