In 2010, 18-year-old Jason Downie became obsessed with Chantelle Rowe, his friend’s girlfriend, after she rejected him. On the night of November 8th, in the quiet town of Kapunda, South Australia, Jason, consumed by jealousy, brutally took the lives of Chantelle, her father Andrew, and her mother Rose in their own home. Chantelle’s older brother, Chris Rowe, was on holiday in the Gold Coast at the time. When he heard rumours of a major incident back home, he logged onto Facebook to find out more. He was reassured with the message, “All’s good,” but soon, he would learn of the devastating loss of his family. Bryan Littlely, a journalist who covered the case extensively, is one of the only reporters to have interviewed Chris, the sole survivor, years later. Yes Politics: Interviews with content creators about politics.
Chris Rowe is running for Congress and joined me for a conversation about his campaign, his policy positions, and so much more. Chris is running as a Democrat in one of the most Republican districts in the nation. Tennessee's 1st congressional district is R+28 according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index (CPVI or PVI). There are only THREE districts in the entire nation with a higher rating. The last Democrat who ran in this district lost by 77% of the vote. And the incumbent, Phil Roe (no relation to Chris), is a five-term congressman who wields a great deal of power in the House. The district is considered so safe for Republicans that Chris is running unopposed in the primary. But Chris is not deterred. And I have to say I am in awe of his passion and willingness to take on the challenge. IMO, running for office is the ultimate form of activism. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and know you will too.
