Laurie Gelman got fired from a volunteer gig as a class mom. Then she wrote the best-selling book series "Class Mom" and wrote her personal next chapter as an author. Chances are you've seen Laurie Gelman from time to time on "Live with Kelly and Ryan." Her husband Michael Gelman is the show's producer. Gelman worked in TV as well as a news anchor, reporter and TV host. She left TV after the birth of her daughters and threw herself into raising kids and volunteering at their school. An invitation to be the class mom led to firm advice from Live's host Kelly Ripa, who warned that the volunteer gig was to be avoided at all costs. Laurie ignored Kelly's advice and jumped into the job with enthusiasm and humor. She infused sarcasm and humor into emails with parents to get their attention about school activities. It was a huge hit with parents until it wasn't. A mother complained about Laurie's approach and Laurie got fired as class mom. Yes, you can get fired from a volunteer school position. "It was my agent who said, when I was complaining about getting fired as class mom, 'that's your book, you know.' That's and it just poured out of me. I didn't expect to write sequels. I didn't expect anything to come of it, because it took me three years to write it, and literally, nobody on this planet was waiting for a book from Laurie Gelman. It was a happy accident," Gelman said. "Class Mom" is now a four-book series and tells the story of Jenn Dixon, who navigates parent politics with humor, as Laurie did in real life. It's irreverent. It's well-written. And, it turned into a total midlife career pivot Laurie Gelman never saw coming. On this week's Dying to Ask: The backstory on what it takes to get fired as a class mom How to see the humor in universal experiences like volunteering at your kids school What real-life class moms think of Laurie's books And what its been like for Laurie and her husband to raise their family behind the scenes on on-air of "Live with Kelly and Ryan"
It's been two-and-a-half years since the second season of “Dead to Me” dropped on Netflix, and since it was in the middle of 2020, it seems like even longer. At long last - season 3 is here! Judy and Jen have been partners in crime, quite literally, for some time now. The duo first met in a grief support group after the death of Jen's husband, Ted. Judy begins helping her take care of her sons and becomes part of her family. Eventually, Jen finds out that Judy and her estranged husband, were the ones responsible for Ted's death. Having shared her wedding in Tali's Wedding Diary and then her pregnancy in Tali's Baby Diary, Tali is moving back to Joburg in Season 3, determined to get Jayden into the premium preschool, Little Angels Hyde Park, and reclaim her crown, or at the very least the title of Class Mom.

This week I had to catch up with world class Triathlete and super mom Kristen Lipscomb. Kristen and I were teammates in high school (track and field). We both competed in the throwing events, with some shorter races sprinkled in. Since graduating from high school, Kristen has become a world class Triathlete, having qualified for the 70.3 world championships in 2020. Besides being a world class athlete, Kristen is a wife and mom of two little ones. Even after our interview, I still struggle with figuring out how she is able to balance a career, family, and training all through a world-wide pandemic. In this episode, Kristen and I discussed: 1. All things Webster 2. Competing in high school track and field 3. Overcoming injuries in high school 4. Making the transition to Triathlon 5. When she realized she might be a "good" Triathlete 6. Racing for two 7. Managing a work-life balance 8. The mental conditioning required to race longer distances (half and full Ironman races) 9. What goes into the physical preparation of competing in longer distances 10. Advice for those interested in competing in Triathlon

Laurie Gelman talks about her laugh-out-loud-funny debut novel "Class Mom," jumping from broadcast journalism to being an author, and spills details on her highly anticipated follow up!
Almost every kid who heads back to school time of year — into a new classroom, or perhaps even to a whole new school — does so with some mix of anxiety and optimism about fitting in. Will any of my friends be in my class? Will the big kids on the playground be mean? Who will I sit with at lunch? But less talked about, perhaps, are the other dynamics on the school yard. The ones between the parents. If you're new to having a kid in school, you're also likely new to the strange world of grown-up cliques in the playground. It can be a bit of a bizarre thing for those seeking a place in their school community, or even just trying to figure out what being a parent of a school-aged child entails. Canadian writer and broadcaster Laurie Gelman is our guest for this episode. Laurie is the former host of The Mom Show on Slice, but she's now turned her hand to writing fiction. Her hilarious new novel, Class Mom, is about a year in the life of a kindergarten class mom — a send-up of the petty and surprisingly cutthroat terrain of parent politics. We're getting all up in this cliquey business on today's show. Show Notes Love our work? Please check out our Patreon Campaign! Become a patron of the show for as little as $1 per month

Gerry and I moved to Ventura in July 1984. We were warmly welcomed to the Our Lady of the Assumption Parish by Msgr. Mulcahy and quickly signed the kids up for Sunday School. That was actually our first opportunity to get involved, as I volunteered to be a Sunday School teacher. Our three children, Marcellla, Joseph and Jason all attended OLA school as well as St. Bonaventure High School. We volunteered in many ways throughout that time from Room parents, Class Mom and Fall Festival Food chair at the school to music ministry, lectoring and church environment for the Parish. Two and a half years ago our blessings were increased with the birth of our grandson, Nathan. He lives in Oxnard with Marcella and her husband, David. Both Joseph and Jason continue to live locally after graduating from college. A year ago Gerry retired after 30 years in the fire service as a Fire Captain for the City of Glendale. God has been so good to us that we feel strongly how important it is to give back. Sharing our talents is SO easy! We always receive back so much more than we could ever give. Every day we thank God for our many blessings; sharing our time, talent and treasure is an almost effortless way to express that thanks.
