Georgia Hunter, author of the New York Times bestseller WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES, joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her latest novel, ONE GOOD THING. Georgia explains why she chose to set the book in Italy and the research trip that she took there with her mother, which was such a special time for her. She and Carol discuss what it must be like to live in a world where at any moment someone might be a friend or an enemy, and how a journey without a destination that you thought would be safe would be such a difficult one. Georgia also shares why she loves talking to students about her work. And yes, there is conversation about the Hulu series “We Were the Lucky Ones” and her presence as that was filmed.   Our Latest “Bookreporter Talks To” Interviews: Jeff Hobbs: https://youtu.be/Y-B_yErFlvI Clare Leslie Hall: https://youtu.be/vEtkFycxXjc Charmaine Wilkerson: https://youtu.be/jxlrtbxCAsE Marie Benedict: https://youtu.be/-GF-3ZU4a1M Joseph Finder: https://youtu.be/HIUUcBQeRWE Scott Turow: https://youtu.be/tkbQ7yUU8GE Michelle Horton: https://youtu.be/gQOWAirkZjE Our Latest “Bookaccino Live” Book Group Events: Anna Quindlen: https://youtu.be/OgMczT4JlTs Lisa Wingate: https://youtu.be/X4RKP3mT4Rc Ashley Elston: https://youtu.be/nQgw214dyjs Ariel Lawhon: https://youtu.be/rowGE3T2rfE Amanda Peters: https://youtu.be/sWX2Mxw5fT Shelley Read: https://youtu.be/3KdG1kIfcgc William Kent Krueger: https://youtu.be/IsIQJn3vYNI Ann Napolitano: https://youtu.be/VNYNugzjVbo Sign up for newsletters from Bookreporter and Reading Group Guides here: https://tbrnetwork.com/newsletters/ FOLLOW US on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bookreporter Website: https://www.bookreporter.com Art Credit: Tom Fitzgerald Edited by Jordan Redd Productions

Today I'm joined by NYT Bestselling author, Georgia Hunter, to chat about her novel and its subsequent Hulu and Disney+ TV adaptation, "We Were The Lucky Ones". I binge watched all of "We Were The Lucky Ones" in one sitting. I then needed to devour the book. This television series and novel could be my favourite piece of media consumed this year. I immediately knew I had to sit down with the book's author, as well as TV series' writer and executive producer, Georgia Hunter to learn more about the genesis of this story, and adapting the book to screen. This is the story of one family's survival of the Holocaust, told in the most touching, real and raw way. I absolutely loved getting the chance to sit down with Georgia, who's a grandchild of one of the survivors, to learn more about the research that went into writing this book... and the devoting and work that went into adapting this novel in the most perfect 8-episode mini series.I was on the brink of crying throughout this whole episode. What an absolute privilege it is to connect with Georgia and hear from her point of view what it was like to bring her family's story to the masses, especially during such trying times for the Jewish people.   ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡About Get Lit With Lianna: The PodcastJoin Instagram book content creator @getlitwithlianna as she sits down with a different guest author to chat about their books, writing career, and everything in between! The Gong Show was a spicy blend of talent, shock and zany, sprinkled heavily with the special sauce that was Producer/Host Chuck Barris. 70s TV was all about The Gong Gang and Game Show Guru Adam Nedeff's newest offering, Gong This Book chronicles the weirdly hypnotic cultural touchstone that was The Gong Show.Adam joins us with returning guest, author and Game Show Writer Shelley Herman. She appeared on The Gong Show and The Dating Game and her book is called My Peacock Tale: Secrets of an NBC Page. Together, we're celebrating game show history and delving deeply into The Gong Show, The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game. We take a look at Adam's all-time favorite hosts, Bill Cullen, Dennis James, Alan Ludden, Gene Rayburn, Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest. Adam shares The Gong Show's origin story which includes original hosts Gary Owens and John Barbour before the NBC head of daytime let Chuck Barris know that he was the only person who could host such a specifically strange show. He did and it worked, but it consumed him.Was Chuck Barris really a CIA spy???! We CAN tell you without having to kill you. Did The Gong show usher in the phenomenon that would become reality TV? Probably. What happened on those Dating Game dates!? Shelley is telling all. Fritz almost hosted two game shows but his tenacious weather job kept pulling him back in and Weezy's very first Hollywood show biz experience was her appearance on the game show, Face The Music!Adam and Shelley also discuss the fascinating intricacies of game show question writing and researching. And, they share the heartwarming story of Adam's book about Alan Ludden appearing dog eared and well loved in the very last photo taken of Betty White. Adam is now the proud owner of Betty's copy of his book. And in recommendations, Fritz has been loving Palm Royale on Apple Plus and Weezy went book to screen with We Were The Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. In Episode 16, Meredith Monday Schwartz and Kaytee Cobb join me to go behind-the-scenes of the Currently Reading Podcast. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights The segment Currently Reading guests are always the most nervous about. How (and how fast) Currently Reading came together. What Meredith and Kaytee did not want Currently Reading to be. How Meredith and Kaytee’s relationship has changed since starting Currently Reading. The biggest challenges of running Currently Reading (PS – Kaytee’s and Meredith’s are different). Meredith and Kaytee’s dream guests for Currently Reading…and Sarah’s for Sarah’s Book Shelves Live. Meredith and Kaytee share the biggest similarities and biggest differences in their reading tastes. The book all three of us loved despite thinking the premise was completely preposterous. A bonus book recommendation from Meredith. A tangent about Goodreads‘ skewed ratings because of people not rating books they don’t like and/or finish. She lives in the SF Bay Area and loves the cool temperatures and high number of bookstores that make up the gorgeous place she calls home. She’s been an avid reader since she was 4. She’s a very introverted INFJ, so she reads to re-charge. Her very favorite thing to do if she’s not reading is… wait for it… to talk about books! She’s so grateful that, in Kaytee, she’s found the perfect partner. About Kaytee Instagram | Blog | Twitter| Goodreads Kaytee is married to her best friend, a mama of 4 littles, a big fan of Jesus, and a homeschool mom and director (kind of like the principal of our homeschool co-op). She tries not to lose her mind while juggling all these roles by reading books. She’s attempting to reach “professional” reading level by regularly devouring 200 or more books in a calendar year! She’s an ESFJ, Type A, Enneagram 2w1, Obliger who obviously loves personality tests. She enjoys being around people, but her favorite thing to talk to those people about is…books! In Episode 9, Nicole Bonia and Gayle Weiswasser from The Readerly Report Podcast join me to discuss their reading tastes and share book recommendations…prepare for some potentially unpopular opinions!  This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights How Gayle and Nicole went from bookish friends to podcast co-hosts. Gayle’s vs. Nicole’s reading taste. The book Nicole and Gayle both violently hated. Gayle shares a very popular book she didn’t like – which I didn’t agree with her about. We all talk about some huge books we didn’t love. How we don’t generally like Pulitzer Prize-winning books. How we feel about World War II books. How we feel about real life book clubs. Goodreads Choice Awards. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of the hosts: getting sucked in by a book to the detriment of…. the rest of your life, and fun book mail deliveries. Next, we discuss our current reads. We have some very seriously large opinions about our books this week. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for Meredith to get spicy, you’re in luck! Our deep dive this week centers on the Currently Reading Challenge! If you’ve been wondering about some of our favorite classics for that second category on your challenge sheet, you are in luck! We’ve got 20 titles for you for this category alone! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands: two more classics are on our lists this week. Bestselling author of We Were the Lucky Ones, Georgia Hunter, joins me to share her (mostly) historical fiction book recommendations, talk about the impact her novel had on her life and her family, and go behind-the-scenes of her recent book tour. Highlights Georgia’s discovery at age 15 that she was ¼ Jewish and that her grandparents’ were Holocaust survivors…and then, recently discovering that she’s actually ⅓ Jewish. Georgia’s grandparents’ decision to put the past behind them and not talk about their experience in the war. Georgia’s family’s reaction to having huge gaps in their personal histories filled through her research.  Georgia is beginning work on a sophomore novel! What it’s like to blurb another author’s book (and her approach to writing blurbs). An All the Light We Cannot See read-alike. Georgia’s book she didn’t love is one I recommended! Article about author Daniel Mason in New York Times Magazine: If This Book Is Not Expressing Everything, What Am I Doing With My Life? About Georgia Hunter Author Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write. I penned my first “novel” when I was four years old, and titled itCharlie Walks the Beast after my father’s recently published sci-fi novel, Softly Walks the Beast. When I was eleven, I pitched an article—an Opinion piece on how I’d spend my last day if the world were about to come to an end—to the local newspaper. Since that debut in the Attleboro Sun Chronicle, my personal essays and photos have been featured in places like the New York Times “Why We Travel,” in travelgirl magazine, and on Equitrekking.com. I’ve also taken on the role of freelance copywriter in the world of adventure travel, crafting marketing materials for outfitters such as Austin Adventures and The Explorer’s Passage. In 2000, a family reunion opened my eyes to the astounding war stories of my grandfather and his family. Eight years later, armed with a digital voice recorder and a moleskin notebook, I set off to unearth and record my family’s story. I spent nearly a decade traversing the globe, interviewing family and digging up records from every possible source I could think of, eventually piecing together the bones of what would become my novel, We Were the Lucky Ones.   Support the Podcast ShareIf you like the podcast, I’d love for you to share it with your reader friends…in real life and on social media. Hey there word nerds! Today I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing author Georgia Hunter on the show! Georgia’s debut novel, We Were the Lucky Ones, is an emotional story about a Jewish family ripped away from each other at the start of the German and Russian occupation of Poland, and their extraordinary journey back to each other. And if that wasn’t juicy enough, the novel is actually based on Georgia’s grandfather’s (Addy in the book) real Holocaust survival story. Readers from all over the country have embraced this incredible story, leading it to be nominated as a finalist for the Goodreads “Best Books of 2017 Choice Awards” for “Best Debut Goodreads Author.” Listen in as we chat about Georgia’s amazing book, and how to balance real family lore with historical fiction.   In this episode Georgia and I discuss: Crafting suspense into a story when your readers already know the ending. Using the present tense to bring emotions to life in your characters. The distinction between nonfiction and historical fiction and when to draw the line. Flushing out snippets of oral history with believable transitions in your novel. Georgia’s tips on where to start when writing your family’s story.   Plus, Georgia’s #1 tip for writers.
