More than any other single person, one man towered like a colossus over all forms of media in 1994, the subject of It Happened One Year's slam-jammingest eighth episode - Shaquille O'Neal! Sarah & Joe explain how this episode ballooned from a mere nugget of trivia into a gold rush of stories surrounding the then Orlando Magic center - from his wildly successful gold and platinum rap albums (Shaq Diesel and Shaq Fu: Da Return) to his less well-received video game, from his hit autobiography to his popular appearances with World Championship Wrestling. '94 Shaq was possibly the greatest Shaq of them all! And no discussion of The Diesel in 1994 would be complete without a lengthy look at his co-starring role in the volcanic basketball epic Blue Chips, starring Nick Nolte, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell, and Ed O'Neill! The movie's bravura showcase of slam dunks, Larry Bird's sub-par acting, Coach Bell's moral ambiguity, and the opening five minutes being possibly the greatest in film history are all given their fair due. IHOY presents, at center, 7'1" from LSU, The Big Aristotle himself - Shaquille O'Neal!

“Boys, the rules don't make much sense. But I believe in the rules. Some of us broke them. I broke them. I can't do this. I can't win like this.” From Coach Pete Bell's mouth to our ears, this week the Bill Bradley Collective return to the movies for a discussion of William Friedkin and Ron Shelton's 1994 basketball drama, Blue Chips. Tepidly received by critics and audiences alike upon release, the Collective return a unanimous positive appraisal of the film's artistic merits: the strong performances of Nick Nolte as the aforementioned Coach Bell, Alfre Woodard, J.T. Walsh, Mary McDonnell and the host of cameos from a who's who of the early 1990's hoops scene, the soundtrack, and the portrayal of on-court basketball sequences. Nuanced cinema critique quickly gives way to an examination of Blue Chips' message, namely the question: what does this movie have to say about amateurism in college sports and the forces that continue to refuse collegiate athletes be given commensurate compensation within the very rules Pete Bell struggles to reckon with. Brought to you remotely thanks to the efforts of our esteemed producer in light of adverse weather and necessary COVID precaution, we are three fists in the face of sports and politics (and occasionally the movies), the Bill Bradley Collective.

This is probably the most in depth we have ever been on technique on the podcast, and for that reason this is definitely one of my favourite episodes to date. Dan Bell, Josh and I spoke about the role of the arms in affecting bar path, the role of the quads and hamstrings, and where the balance ought to be during all parts of the pull. We spoke about flat footed pulls, panda pulls, and belt squats. We also finished off with a few hilarious and informative stories about Westside Barbell. Ultimately, a tremendous podcast. Dan Bell (The People's Technician) has coached weightlifting exclusively for nearly 18 years. He is a USA Weightlifting National (Level 2) coach and has guided weightlifters to the national and international level, as well as helped hundreds of Crossfitters improve their weightlifting technique.Coach Bell has been involved in weight training and barbell sports for over forty years. His strength journey has taken him from preparing for high school football and wrestling to powerlifting, strongman training, and finally, Olympic weightlifting.
