It's one of those weeks where the headlines feel uncomfortably close to home. Between James Van Der Beek's death from colorectal cancer and Eric Dane's ALS diagnosis, it's hard not to think about your own health and mortality. So we brought on our friend Mickey Rapkin — journalist, author, former GQ editor, and yes, the guy who wrote Pitch Perfect before it became a major studio franchise. In August 2025, Mickey's older brother Jon died from brain cancer. We talk about sibling loss (aka the worst club), the sacred inside jokes, the random movie lines that become part of your daily language, and how grief rewires you on a cellular level. We also get into Mickey's Men's Health piece about cancer screenings — the big question of how much do you want to know, what testing can (and can't) do, and why “control is an illusion” is both depressing and… oddly clarifying. Send us a textWhat if sleep was the most powerful hormone-balancing tool you had—and you didn't need another supplement to access it?In this episode, Gina and Kristin unpack why sleep isn't optional when it comes to hormone health—it's foundational medicine. If you're eating well, exercising, and “doing all the right things” but still struggling with fatigue, stubborn weight, cravings, PMS, or cycle issues, this conversation is for you.We break down the science behind the hormone–sleep connection in a way that actually makes sense, including how poor sleep impacts cortisol, insulin, melatonin, and your hunger hormones. You'll also hear common client patterns we see when sleep is off—like waking between 2–4 a.m., feeling wired but tired, or plateauing despite your best efforts. Most importantly, we reframe sleep as an intentional healing tool, not just more hours in bed. You'll learn why quality matters more than quantity, how circadian rhythm drives hormone balance, and why better sleep starts first thing in the morning—not at bedtime. We wrap with practical, hormone-supportive sleep tips you can start using tonight, plus a simple reflection to help you take action without overwhelm.✨ In this episode, we cover:Why sleep is active hormone therapyHow poor sleep disrupts cortisol, insulin, and appetite regulationSigns your hormones are being impacted by sleep (even if you get 8 hours)The role of circadian rhythm in cycle health, thyroid function, and fertilitySimple shifts that can create big hormonal changes

How To Be Awesome At Everything Podcast
345. Bloodwork Every 90 Days For Awesome Preventative Health

How To Be Awesome At Everything Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2026 27:03

I get my blood work done every 90 days and I swear it's the ultimate tip for health in the short term and in the long term and just feeling your best on he daily. So, today I'm going to try to convince you to do the same. Because there is a huge difference between being "not sick" and being truly healthy and if you aren't getting your bloodwork done at least once a year, you really don't know what's going on. Most people only get blood work done when something is wrong. When they feel bad. When they are exhausted. When a symptom won't go away. When a doctor orders it because something already happened. Instead of doing it reactively, we are talking about doing it proactively. How can you know what your body needs? What supplements or adjustments to your lifestyle… it's almost impossible without bloodwork. It tells you how your hormones are functioning. How inflamed your body is. How well you are absorbing nutrients. How your cholesterol is trending. How stressed your nervous system is. How your metabolism is working. How your immune system is functioning. Today's episode is about why doing blood work every 90 days can completely change your relationship with your health, how the top longevity experts think about tracking biomarkers, how it helps you personalize supplements and lifestyle instead of guessing, and how it allows you to catch problems early before they become a real problem.  Let's go! Your blood work is your internal dashboard. It's crazy that most people are driving their body blind!! I do full blood work every 90 days and I swear by it.  I'm going to break it all down today. Every 90 days I sit down with my functional medicine doctor, Dr. Singler, and we go through everything. We look at what's trending up. What's trending down. What needs support. What needs to be addressed. We adjust supplements. We talk about lifestyle changes. We sometimes talk about peptides. We look at stress markers like cortisol. We look at hormones. We look at inflammation. We look at cholesterol. We look at nutrient deficiencies. It's not just "do you have a disease." It's "what is your body asking for." And that quarterly check-in has become one of the most powerful forms of self-care I do. Today's episode is about why doing blood work every 90 days can completely change your relationship with your health, how the top longevity experts think about tracking biomarkers, how it helps you personalize supplements and lifestyle instead of guessing, and how it allows you to catch problems early before they become diagnoses. Because knowledge is power. And when it comes to your health, awareness is leverage. ***Why the Best Health and Longevity Experts Obsess Over Biomarkers When you listen to people like Peter Attia, Andrew Huberman, and leaders in longevity medicine, one theme is constant. You can't manage what you don't measure. They talk constantly about biomarkers. Blood markers. Hormones. Cholesterol. Glucose. Inflammation. Nutrients. Stress markers. Not because numbers are the goal. Because trends tell the truth. You don't need to wait until something is "out of range" to take action. You can see patterns forming. You can see directions your health is moving. You can intervene early. Longevity is not built by reacting to disease. Longevity is built by managing risk decades before disease shows up. Blood work lets you see inside the body instead of guessing from the outside. Energy, mood, sleep, weight, anxiety, motivation, focus, hormones, immune function… all of it leaves fingerprints in your labs. *** Why Every 90 Days Is a Sweet Spot Doing blood work every 90 days creates a rhythm. It's long enough for meaningful changes to occur. It's short enough to catch problems early. It's frequent enough to personalize your approach. This cadence allows you to: • See how supplements are actually working • Know if lifestyle changes are helping • Track hormones as they shift • Monitor cholesterol trends • Watch inflammation markers • Identify deficiencies before symptoms • See how stress is impacting your body It turns health into an ongoing relationship instead of a once-a-year appointment. Rather than living on autopilot, it becomes a quarterly check-in. "How is my body actually doing?" "What does it need right now?" "What needs to change?" ***The Power of Baselines One of the most underrated benefits of regular blood work is baselines. When you know what your normal looks like, everything changes. If something shifts, you see it faster. If you get sick, you have something to compare to. If symptoms show up, you're not starting from zero. Your baseline becomes your personal health fingerprint. This is especially powerful with hormones, thyroid, cholesterol, inflammatory markers, glucose, and nutrient levels. Medicine is often built around population averages. But health is personal. Your optimal range is not always the same as "normal." Blood work every 90 days teaches you your body. ***Personalization Instead of Guessing Most people take supplements blindly. They try what's trending. What a friend is taking. What TikTok says. What an ad promises. Blood work removes guessing. You stop throwing things at your body and hoping. You start making informed decisions. When I review labs with my doctor, we are not just looking for problems. We are optimizing. We adjust supplements based on what my body is actually showing. We talk about hormones. We talk about stress. We talk about sleep. We talk about hydration. We talk about inflammation. We talk about recovery. If cortisol is elevated, the conversation shifts to lifestyle, nervous system, sleep, slowing down, hydration, sauna, recovery. If something is low, we talk about absorption, nutrition, and targeted support. It becomes a dialogue with your body instead of a guessing game. ***Emotional Health Lives in the Labs Too This is not just physical. Your labs often reflect your emotional and mental load. Stress hormones. Inflammation. Blood sugar instability. Nutrient depletion. Your body keeps the receipts. Blood work gives you objective data to support lifestyle changes. Sometimes the answer is not another supplement. Sometimes it's rest. Sleep. Boundaries. Sunlight. Movement. Slowing down. It's incredibly empowering to see that connection clearly. It turns self-care into strategy, not indulgence. ***How I Do It and How You Could Do It The way I do it is higher touch and more expensive. I use a mobile blood draw that comes to my house. Then I schedule a long call with my functional medicine doctor to go through everything. We take our time. We look at the full picture. We build a plan. But you do not have to do it that way. You can ask your doctor to order labs. You can go to a clinic and make an appointment so you're not waiting forever. You can get a basic panel and build from there. You can even upload your results into ChatGPT and use it as an educational tool to help you understand what the markers mean and what questions to ask your doctor. This doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to be consistent. ***Why This Is One of the Best Investments You Can Make We spend money on convenience. On clothes. On food. On homes. On trips. On businesses. But nothing affects the quality of your life more than the quality of your health. Energy. Mood. Confidence. Focus. Longevity. Relationships. Joy. Blood work every 90 days is not an expense. It is intelligence. It is prevention. It is personalization. It is early detection. It is self-leadership. It is saying, "I care about how long I live and how well I live." ***Most people wait for symptoms to tell them something is wrong. But by the time symptoms show up, your body has usually been whispering for a long time. Blood work lets you hear the whispers. It lets you see trends before problems. Adjust before crashes. Support before burnout. Correct before disease. For me, doing blood work every 90 days has become a quarterly health check-in with myself. How am I really doing? What does my body need? What needs to change? What needs support? It keeps me connected to my health instead of disconnected from it. And I truly believe this is one of the most powerful forms of preventative self-care anyone can adopt. So if you take anything from this episode, let it be this. Don't wait for something to go wrong.  Start tracking your health while things are going right. There's nothing more important or worth spending your time and money on!

This episode is a blunt, no-apologies examination of why healthcare feels expensive, impersonal, and broken—because it is operating exactly as designed. From end-of-life care to insurance “psyops,” the conversation highlights how divorcing patients from cost, choice, and responsibility fuels inefficiency and moral hazard. The episode closes with a clear message: you don't fix this system from inside it—you opt out where you can, take ownership of your health, and stop feeding the machine.GET SOCIAL WITH US!

Death doesn't wait for symptoms, and neither should you. This eye-opening episode tackles the critical yet often avoided topic of men's health during Men's Health Month.Did you know men are 24% less likely than women to have seen a doctor in the past year? The statistics are alarming, but there's hope. Whether you identify as male or simply care about the men in your life, this conversation could literally save lives. Dr. Jules dives deep into why men avoid healthcare (hint: it's not laziness) and how cultural messaging about "toughness" and "manning up" contributes to shorter male lifespans. The episode delivers a comprehensive breakdown of the top three killers of men - heart disease, cancer, and strokes - with practical strategies for prevention. Rather than vague advice, Dr. Jules provides age-specific screening recommendations from your 20s through your 60s and beyond. Through compelling real patient stories, including a 52-year-old man who was a "walking time bomb" despite feeling fine and a 59-year-old whose delayed colonoscopy led to advanced cancer, the message becomes clear: waiting for symptoms can be deadly. What makes this conversation especially powerful is its framing of men's health as a family issue. Women, who make up over 80% of the podcast's audience and often serve as family health coordinators, receive practical guidance on supporting the men they love. The episode concludes with a profound reminder that prevention isn't just about extending life, but enriching it. The Future of Everything presented by Stanford Engineering

Chemical engineer Beth Sattely studies the intricate chemistry of plant life. Plants are more than food, she says: They are living chemical factories churning out molecules that help plants do everything from adapting to climate change to fighting infections – or even producing valuable new cancer drugs. Lately, Sattely's lab is working on ways to make crops more resilient to engineer more sustainable foods and environments. Some of our most exciting technologies already exist in nature, we just have to find them, Sattely tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? This knowledge isn't just theoretical – Dr. Vrzal has used these connections to help patients who haven't found relief through conventional approaches.Beyond headaches, Dr. Vrzal discusses how muscle testing, nutrition, and addressing emotional components play critical roles in achieving lasting wellness. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE:(00:00) Why is the Standard American diet the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes, and what is insulin resistance(04:18) Metabolic health connects to every system, and the ultra-processed food dilemma(09:48) Why supplements are important(14:30) Everyone is pre-diabetic, unless. Modern farming, soil depletion, and long-distance transport have stripped our food of nutrients, making quality sourcing and supplementation essential.Staying ahead of metabolic disease means taking daily action—moving your body, managing stress, eating well, sleeping, and staying connected.  Even a short walk after a meal can significantly reduce blood sugar spikes. Daily activity improves energy and focus, builds muscle, enhances insulin sensitivity, and monitors glucose levels.Just because a drink is labeled “prebiotic” doesn't mean it replaces real vegetables. Whole fruits and vegetables provide a variety of fibers that support gut health more effectively than most supplements or processed drinks. You can't supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Supplements are only as good as their quality. Many synthetic options don't break down or absorb adequately, making them useless. Food first, then smart supplementation.Chronic stress triggers hormonal changes that lead to insulin resistance and fat storage. The damage builds over time because most people don't recognize their stress. Managing stress is just as crucial as managing diet and exercise.QUOTES:         (08:56) “Our food supply is ripening while in transit, not connected to the vine where nutrients come from.” - Jenn Trepeck(18:54) “Variety is your friend. Eat the rainbow.” - Jenn Trepeck(23:30) “I'm a big fan of supplements, but you cannot supplement your way out of poor nutrition. Food first, then mart supplementation.” - Jenn Trepeck(39:36) “Next time you need to replace a mattress or a pillow. Let's make sure it's a material that isn't going to off-gas toxins.” - Jenn Trepeck"It comes down to default vs design because the way our world is set-up around us, the default would easily be the recipe for pre-diabetes and diabetes. It seems like almost everyone is taking GLP-1 medications these days to lose weight. Now a couple years after they've been used for this purpose, what do we know? How do we interpret all the headlines about them? Despite how the news makes it sound and what your doctor may have told you, you have options! Tune in to understand more about GLP-1 medications, what Jenn does as a health coach for her clients who are taking them, and how you can naturally support your own GLP-1, empowering you with knowledge and control over your health.Welcome to Salad with a Side of Fries! In today's episode, Jenn dives into the impact of GLP-1 medications on metabolic health. She begins by explaining what GLP-1 is and addresses some of the controversy surrounding celebrities who don't admit to using it for their weight loss. Jenn also uncovers how the secondary benefits of GLP-1 often mislead the public and explores its short term side effects and potential long lasting impacts. She discusses the concept of fat cells having memory, what people can do to support true metabolic health while taking these meds, and shares practical tips for naturally supporting your body's own GLP-1 for long term metabolic health. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Jenn talks about GLP-1 meds, metabolic health and weight loss(05:07) Defining GLP-1 and how it works in the body(12:05) How the public is misled by the secondary benefits of taking the medication and discussion of side effects(21:08) Being cautious and a discussion of the gut brain connection and malnutrition(26:50) Fat cells have memory, BMI as a metric, and an example of how the Healthy Vibe Tribe brought down blood sugar 70 points for a client(35:10) How to naturally support your GLP-1 and metabolic health(43:53) What about insulinKEY TAKEAWAYS: GLP-1 medications are more openly discussed with more people openly admitting they're taking them. This shift contrasts with the early days when celebrities falsely claimed weight loss was solely due to light exercise, misleading the public and creating unrealistic expectations for weight loss.Jenn criticizes the Super Bowl ad from Hers, which she believes "weaponized diet culture" to promote its version of a GLP-1 medication. She expresses frustration with how marketing continues to exploit societal insecurities around weight, comparing it to the more positive and empowering approaches taken by brands like Dove. While GLP-1 medications can be life-transforming in the short term—reducing weight and alleviating joint pain—there are concerns about their long-term impact. Issues like bone density loss, muscle deterioration, and potential joint problems down the line should be considered. This highlights the importance of being proactive and responsible for your long-term healthWhile taking the medications may seem like the “easy button,” there are other considerations to ensure true health, like the nutrition you provide your body when you do eat and the role supplementation can play. There are nutrition and supplementation choices that can support the body's own GLP-1 production.QUOTES: (04:55) “GLP stands for Glucagon Like Peptide. Glucagon Like Peptide 1 comes from the large bowel, or the colon. It stimulates insulin secretion, suppresses glucagon, supporting blood sugar regulation.” Jenn Trepeck(17:21) “Protein and fiber at every meal makes removing fat, no big deal.” Jenn Trepeck(34:54) “Sometimes while we think this is the easy button, it requires an even more significant commitment to protein, fiber, quality fat, strength training, and a multivitamin to get your micronutrients.” Jenn Trepeck.(40:23) “When we start to understand low glycemic impact nutrition, we're focusing on nutrient dense foods and less processed foods.” Jenn Trepeck(42:35) “ Exercise, sleep, water, food. Do you struggle to lose weight and keep it off? It turns out, fat cells actually have a memory that can keep weight off after rapid weight loss!In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, Jenn Trepeck sits down with Professor Dr. Ferdinand von Meyenn, assistant professor at the Institute of Food, Nutrition, and Health at ETH Zurich, to explore his study with the intriguing finding that fat cells encode a memory which influences the ability to maintain weight loss and therefore impacts metabolic health. They delve into his groundbreaking research on bariatric patients and mice, uncovering how fat cells retain memory and can continue to impact the body long after weight loss. Dr. von Meyenn breaks down the role of epigenetics, why GLP-1 medications don't provide long-term effects, and the importance of proper nutrition and lifestyle when losing weight and keeping it off. They also discuss the hip-to-waist ratio versus BMI and why prevention is the most powerful tool for long-term well-being. IN THIS EPISODE: (05:27) Ferdinand's research on fat cell memory and metabolic health(09:21) Research findings on bariatric patients and experiments on mice(17:28) Ferdinand defines epigenetics and GLP's don't give long-lasting effects(26:06) Losing weight too quickly and the set point concept(35:00) Weight loss is good, but proper nutrition is critical and discussion of adiponectin(38:27) Excess energy and body fat, the hip to waist ratio, and being overweight, and the long-term consequencesKEY TAKEAWAYS: Even after significant weight loss, an individuals' fat cells retain molecular changes (altered RNA and epigenetic markers) associated with their previous obese state. These long-lasting molecular markers in the fat cells predispose the body to regain weight as it responds more readily to an obesogenic environment.Weight loss significantly improves health, whether in humans or mice. However, fat cells have a form of memory, meaning that even after weight loss, some molecular changes persist. While these changes do not necessarily drive disease, they highlight the importance of sustained weight management strategies.Rapid weight loss, especially with methods like GLP-1 medications, can lead to muscle loss, negatively impacting metabolism and overall health. Since muscles play a key role in energy expenditure and physical stability (especially with aging), preserving muscle mass during weight loss is crucial for long-term success and well-being.QUOTES:         (06:59) “Many times people get bariatric surgery, and despite that being a very significant intervention that restricts how much food you take in, people lose weight for a while, and yet some recover some of that body weight.” Ferdinand von Meyenn(13:46) “The cell predisposes these people to regain weight because their cells are signaling for the obesogenic environment that they became used to.” Jenn Trepeck(24:53) “I think this is connected to the set point idea that people have heard of how we go about ‘losing the weight'. That might play into this too.” Jenn Trepeck.(26:08) “If weight loss is too quick, it is also loss of protein mass, basically of muscle mass and that is really problematic.” Ferdinand von Meyenn(32:43) “If we build lean muscle mass over time, removing fat over time, giving the body time to adapt to this metabolically healthier environment, there's the possibility of easier maintenance.” Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramNutrition Nugget: Minnesota Starvation ExperimentGUEST RESOURCESLaboratory of Nutrition and Metabolic Epigenetics - WebsitevonMeyenn BlueSky - Social MediavonMeyenn Lab BlueSky - Social MediaMeyenn lab -  XFerdinand - XFerdinand von Meyenn - LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Ferdinand von Meyenn has been Assistant Professor of the Institute of Food Nutrition and Health at the ETH Zurich since January 2019.Ferdinand studied Biochemistry at the TU Müchnen, Germany, before moving to ETH Zürich for his PhD to study metabolism and type-2 diabetes.
