“When I meet with executives at banks, every single one of them tells me that they compete by how customer-centric” they are, says Alex Jimenez, Managing Principal, Financial Services Consulting at EPAM. “They can't really verbalize what that means.” By contrast, Frank Sorrentino, Chairman and CEO of ConnectOne Bank, our guest on this #TakeItToTheBank conversation, is quite articulate indeed. Listen as Sorrentino and Jimenez journey into the heart of customer-centric banking. “When we have a meeting with clients, it's not about what products and services that we have,” says Sorrentino. “It's trying to understand ‘What are they trying to do?' before we even talk about any particular product or service.” This kind of customer understanding will be crucial in the upcoming year. Until recently, Sorrentino, says the economy was like a “small town, Little League where everybody gets a trophy…. everybody does well and everybody's rewarded and every decision you make happens to be the right one.” He adds: “We're now moving into an economy where I believe discipline is gonna matter. Intelligent choices are gonna matter. And I think there will be winners and losers.” They go on to discuss important subjects such as the impact of digital technology and humanizing the digital experience, the role of the branch, how companies can optimize their activities in an uncertain economy, and more. This episode, it must be added, features only winners. Host: Kenji Ross Engineer: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

Today Frank Sorrentino frequents board rooms as ConnectOne Bank's CEO, but three decades ago, you would find him on a construction site laying brick. A fourth-generation Italian-American and mason, Frank is proud of his roots. His hands-on experience brings a unique perspective that continues to shape his approach as a financial industry executive. In this podcast, Frank talks about watching his grandfather's pride in his tools and work. Those values were carried through the generations to him. He started early in the family business as a mason, but he was more fascinated with the operations side of the work. Frank liked the idea of bringing his expertise together with contractors and capital to deliver a product and make a profit. He was around 20 years old when he walked into a bank for his first construction loan. Over time, Frank leveraged his relationships and acquired more knowledge about all facets of the construction industry. His construction business opened the door to the insurance industry. He discusses how his love for understanding and refining processes improved that business. It was also through construction that he learned about the banking industry. His lightbulb moment was his experience dealing with different banks, several mergers, and the firsthand impact of poor customer service. Frank knew that he could bring exceptional customer service to fill a gap in the market, leading to the foundation of what is today ConnectOne bank. Since starting the bank, Frank has weathered several storms, including the great recession of 2008, initiating an IPO when no one else was, several mergers, and taking a pay cut to become CEO. As you'll hear from Frank, every risky move took a blend of courage and commitment to the values he learned as a kid laying brick.
The acquisition of the small-business lending marketplace Boefly and partnerships with the loan software company nCino and the construction lending fintech Built are among the efforts helping the New Jersey bank compete with fintechs that have gotten good at serving niche markets, says Frank Sorrentino, its CEO.

Beyond the immediate changes required by social distancing, the COVID-19 pandemic has “accelerated things that were in progress for a long time,” says Frank Sorrentino, chairman and CEO of ConnectOne Bank. The economic and social changes being wrought by the coronavirus make it “incumbent on us as bankers to have those conversations . . . to bring that advice to your clients.” For example, Sorrentino had a restaurant owner who came in panicked about the future. When ConnectOne Bank staff helped him look at the numbers, the owner realized his business was doing similar volumes of business as before with takeout but with 30% fewer employees. The bank helped the restaurant get financing for tech upgrades to handle the takeout business and move forward, “and yet he was incredibly fearful coming into this conversation.” On the ABA Banking Journal Podcast, Sorrentino discusses how bankers can help their business clients understand the post-COVID landscape and plot a financial path forward. He also offers advice about moving beyond coronavirus-related “political football” to have reasoned dialogue about what’s ahead and how businesses can help proactively.

How will we continue to build our businesses and communicate through the noise of the busiest news cycle in memory? My guest Michael Kempner and I discuss the shift in content strategy that happened almost overnight, and what it’s like living in a moment where it’s critically important to be aligned with purpose. In Kempner’s words, “The era of silent CEOs is over,” and we explore what that means for brands, entrepreneurs, and marketing communications in this time of fierce division and limited reach. Michael Kempner is the founder and CEO of MWW, one of the biggest independent PR firms in the world. He is a husband, a dad of three, oversees MWW, works in progressive politics, sits on multiple philanthropic boards as well as the board of American University. “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE GIVEBACK” Lisa Wagner, Vice President and Commercial Business Development Officer at ConnectOne Bank, has a talent for helping others. Her varied career has taken many forms. But whether in sales, banking or community service, for Lisa, it all boils down to one thing: “It’s all about the giveback,” she says. “It’s the circle of life: you give and all good comes from that.” Listen as she describes her journey from media production administration to relationship building at a growing regional bank, and why giving back has been critical to her success. BANKING AND WEIGHT LOSS - WHAT’S THE CONNECTION? Lisa began her career in fashion retailing. Within a few years she joined a media production company in New York City hoping to pursue her dream of a career in radio, television and film. Disillusioned by the slow pace of advancement in that field, however, she left to join Nutrisystem, discovered and honed her skills in sales, and rose to the level of regional manager there. Lisa enjoyed great success; Nutrisystem not so much. Within a few years, Nutrisystem was forced to shut its weight loss centers. Despite this set back, Lisa knew she had a knack for creating and building customer relationships. A former co-worker suggested she look into a career in banking. Turns out, retail banking and managing sales at weight loss centers are very similar. Who knew? You will after you listen to Lisa describe her unpredictable career move. KNOW YOUR CUSTOMER “It is sooo important to understand your client’s business,” Lisa advises. To succeed in today’s banking world, you need to think and work collaboratively. You can’t do that without an appreciation of the challenges and risks your clients face. Good advice to anyone in business? Listen to why Lisa thinks it is. LISA’S TOOLBOX Lisa is a big believer in the power of networking. “I network to find resources for my clients,” she says. She describes the importance of meeting all sorts of people in different industries and connecting people to one another. “Because you can never predict what service or product your client might need,” she advises, “you want to build a toolbox of relationships.” You’ll want to learn how she does it. EXCITING TIMES IN BANKING Lisa has advice to women seeking careers in banking. Retail branch banking is changing, she says. Technology is allowing us to do much more remotely. As branches become more operations oriented, she predicts there will be all sorts of opportunities for those looking at operational careers: compliance, law, technology, credit underwriting, etc. For those interested in public-facing positions, she offers, “If you do something you enjoy, your enthusiasm will come through and you’re going to succeed at it.” ABOUT LISA Lisa Wagner is a Vice President and Commercial Business Development Officer at ConnectOne Bank, headquartered in Englewood Cliffs, N.J.
