In this episode, Dr. Ron Hirschberg sits with Lauren Monroe and Rick Allen: Couple, and Cofounders of Raven Drum Foundation, leading events to heal and build resiliency through the arts for 23 years. Prior to experiencing a community drum circle with over 70 veterans and 1st responders hosted by philanthropist Ernie Boch Jr., Lauren takes us to 2001 - helping Rick through his own trauma with mindfulness, and describes mind-heart-coherence for ourselves and community. Rick reminds us that we are rhythmic beings, how he's seen people open up in a sacred space that the drum circles create, and how in 2006 a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center connected him to injured veterans in a powerful way, bringing us further back to the 1984 accident when he lost his arm, went through rehabilitation, PTSD and discovered new possibilities for a continued career with Def Leppard. Lauren tells us about next identities and training yourself to be the warrior you need to be, and how people can heal their own pain through helping others, and about her song Brave's echoing line, "Shine the light through the dark, and carry what's been broken apart."_______Many thanks To Lauren Monroe and Rick Allen of the Raven Drum Foundation for 23 years and counting- reaching so many people in need of healing. Your service to others is both tangible through feel of the drum, and intangible with the feeling you get when you are mid-way through each drum circle beat. You can learn all about their foundation at https://ravendrumfoundation.org/, for more about Lauren and to catch up on all her new music go to https://laurenmonroe.com/. And of course, remember Def Leppard is on tour this Summer, along with Journey so check out the schedule. I know I'll be at Fenway Park with the good Colonel Dan Arkins cheering on Rick the Thunder God and his band….Thank you to Peggie Rose for all your support and making our conversation happen, and for all you have done to bring veterans and 1st responders together for such a powerful and unique experience. Many thanks to Ernie Boch, Jr. for your generosity and for hosting this event and for allowing our interview amidst classic guitars and inviting vibes. Enjoy Lauren Monroe's song "Brave" at the end of this episode which is featured on her latest album Messages from AphroditeThis episode is dedicated to two members of the Home Base family: Colonel (Ret.) Dan Arkins who is probably practicing the drums somewhere in an undisclosed location while preparing a new mission to conquer the drum kit. And Coreen Field, mom of our own Army Veteran Kelly Field, wife of her late husband Army Veteran Mike Field, and a lifelong Def Leppard fan….______Home Base Nation will be sharing episodes every two weeks up through the Run To Home Base this coming July 27th. The weekend included rock star friends (like Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue and Guns and Roses drummer Matt Sorum) but the real stars of the retreat were the veterans, first responders and trauma survivors who engaged with them in a variety of ways. We talked about the healing power of meditation and mindfulness techniques with Lauren, and they both shared powerful moments forged at the drum circle. We also dive into Lauren Monroes latest single “Brave” and discover an incredible message, and Rick shared stories about a recent portrait he painted inspired by the late Eddie Van Halen.See more from the Raven Drum Foundation's Mountain Rhythm Reset here:https://ravendrumfoundation.org/mrr/https://www.audacy.com/connectingvets/get-help/mental-health/raven-drum-foundation-uses-drums-to-promote-healingAnd more on Rick Allen and Lauren Monroe here:https://rickallen.com/https://laurenmonroe.com/To reach CBS Eye on Veterans Host, Phil Briggs: phil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Just wait… And I've learned that if I just stand there and wait, it's like a magnet: everyone starts to wait. And this pregnant pause of energy starts to happen. And as soon as I start to feel that begin to integrate, I can start talking and things begin to flow.”Lauren talks about the process of opening to her audience: “For me, being open is to immediately check in with my body because that is a doorway. So, for me, it's the beginning place, or starting place, to achieve openness when I feel like I am not. To take a breath. I am telling myself to relax and physically open.”To learn more ways to experience and support Lauren Monroe's mission please visit the https://laurenmonroe.com/ and https://ravendrumfoundation.org/.Enjoy Lauren Monroe's new album, Messages from Aphrodite Storyteller Edition. Lauren Monroe is a gifted singer, songwriter, and mental health advocate who combines her powerful music and art to create a healing journey for communities in crisis. Lauren and Rick Allen (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer of Def Leppard and Lauren's husband) founded the Raven Drum Foundation. Its mission is to serve, educate, and empower Veterans dealing with PTSD, combat trauma, and other at-risk communities. Lauren's music has been inspired by artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Linda Rondstadt, and Janis Joplin. And her music has been compared to those legendary women of rock and blues. Her sound and vocal quality - raw, sawdust-on-the-floor honestly - combined with her performance's emotional and spiritual power, draw audiences in and speak to us on so many levels. Lauren says, “To me, music is a heart-based experience. Through music, I lead people to more deeply connect to themselves and others. It's not just about listening. It's about feeling and connecting.” Lauren's new single, "If You Want," is available now. Her third album, Messages From Aphrodite, will be available in the fall. Transcript: https://bit.ly/AIAe031Today's guests are Rick Allen and Lauren Monroe. Rick Allen is the legendary drummer for the world-famous rock band, Def Leppard. Rick joined Def Leppard at the age of 15, right before the band signed their record contract. He lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984, but that didn't stop him from being an incredible drummer with the help of a (semi-)electronic drum kit. Raven Drum Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001 by Rick, and his wife, Lauren Monroe, who is a musician, and healing arts educator. Raven Drum's mission is to serve, educate, and empower Veterans dealing with PTSD and TBI, people in crisis, and other at-risk populations. The Foundation engages drumming as a tool for healing, allowing participants to use rhythm, mindfulness, and energy-medicine techniques as an avenue for connection and healing. Welcome to another episode of the Hardcore Humanism Podcast. Today we are talking with a fantastic and inspiring husband wife team, Rick Allen and Lauren Monroe. Many of you know Rick as the drummer for the legendary rock band Def Leppard. Rick is also a visual artist – check out his website RickAllen.com for his upcoming showcases in collaboration with the Wentworth Gallery. And Lauren is a spiritual healer as well as an artist and musician – you can check out her new album Under The Wolf Moon at LaurenMonroe.com. And together they have formed The Raven Drum Foundation, a non-profit that helps people heal through a variety of methods, including drumming. Within the Raven Drum Foundation Rick and Lauren have launched Project Resiliency, which utilizes holistic healing approaches to a range of populations, including mothers and children who have suffered domestic violence, wounded soldiers who struggle with PTSD and cancer patients.  Now for those of you who are not aware, Rick joined Def Leppard in the late 1970's when he was 15 years old. The band then went on to huge success with their 1981 album High ‘n' Dry (1981). Then they had even more success with their classic 1983 album Pyromania, with classic songs such as “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages.” Def Leppard's infectious blend of classic rock and heavy metal put them on top of the world. There was no stopping them.  But in December of 1984, Rick was in a car accident that ultimately resulted in the amputation of his right arm. This was a devastating shock to the rock community. As a human being, I felt for Allen. As a fan, I couldn't help but wonder if I would ever hear new Def Leppard music again. But then in 1986, what seemed like a miracle occurred. Def Leppard played the Monsters of Rock Festival held at Castle Donington in England. How could this be? During our conversation, Rick described how his friend Peter Hartley created electronic pedals so that rather than playing the drums the more conventional way, with two hands and one foot, Allen could play with two feet and one hand. As soon as Allen was out of the hospital, he tried out Hartley's creation. And in 1987, Def Leppard, with Allen on drums, released Hysteria, an album that went on to sell over 20 million records worldwide. The album included hits such as “Animal,” “Love Bites,” and the monster stadium rock anthem “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Def Leppard was back and stronger than ever. And they have gone on to be one of rock's most enduring and productive bands, releasing albums and play shows for the past 30 plus years. In 2019, Def Leppard was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And now Rick has taken his personal experience and combined it with Lauren's experience in healing and the arts to form the Raven Drum Foundation and Project Resiliency. And one of the concepts that Lauren talks about is what they called “aggressive vulnerability.” This is the idea that vulnerability is not a weakness, it is a strength. When we can embrace vulnerability, we not only can build ourselves as creative and innovative people, but also develop our empathic capacity to help others.  *****Hardcore Humanism Weekly Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

How does Al-Anon work? How does it empower people and impact lives? Join Rick Allen and Lauren Monroe in a personal interview with Jodi, a member of the Al-Anon program, for an in-depth conversation about the healing impact of Al-Anon on individuals, communities, and Veterans and their families. The Al-Anon and Alateen family groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems.  We believe alcoholism is a family illness, and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon and Alateen is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, or institution; does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause.  There are no dues for membership.  Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions. Al-Anon and Alateen has but one purpose: to help families and friends of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic. *Al-Anon focuses on individuals improving themselves and their relationships. Al-anon teaches that we only have control over ourselves and that we have the power to change our lives. Al-Anon stops the "victim" cycle and empowers its members.
