In this episode of the Red Beard Embodiment podcast, host Alex welcomes Simona Irwin and Layah Jane Singer-Wilson for a genuine conversation about Five Rhythms dance as a pathway to befriending fear and healing trauma. The guests share their personal stories – Simona recounting her first Five Rhythms experience that brought unexpected tears after years of emotional blockage during her health struggles, and Layah describing how movement became her medicine during a pivotal health crisis in her twenties. Together, they discuss their collaborative course "BEFRIENDING EMBODIED MOVEMENT: AN INTRODUCTION TO 5RHYTHMS™" created to bring this transformative practice to everyone, including those who might be homebound or facing physical limitations.Through gentle explanations and personal examples, they reveal how the five rhythms – flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness – create a container for our emotional lives, allowing fear and other difficult feelings to move through the body naturally. Their approach honors both the cathartic potential of movement and the importance of regulation, creating a trauma-sensitive framework that meets practitioners exactly where they are.Whether you're curious about embodied practices or seeking new ways to process old wounds, this conversation offers compassionate insight into how our bodies naturally know the way through fear when given the chance to move with awareness.Key Highlights: [00:00:] Welcome and introduction to our guests[01:12] Five Rhythms as embodied healing practice[02:39] Simona and Layah's backgrounds and expertise[05:46] Simona's moving first dance experience[10:20] Understanding the five rhythms wave[13:16] How Layah found her calling through movement[17:34] Alex shares his dance journey beginnings[20:19] The origins with Gabrielle Roth at Esalen[27:33] Creating trauma-sensitive movement spaces[31:12] Inside their accessible online course[33:35] Movement and nervous system regulation[37:27] Mindfulness principles in movement practice[41:16] Adaptations for all bodies and abilities[46:31] A personal healing story through dance[51:11] How to join the movement communityLinks & ResourcesLayah JaneWebsite: layahjane.comInstagram: @layahjane.movementSimonaWebsite: turningtowards.meInstagram: @turningtowardsFind us Online: Sign up for our newsletter to learn more about the power of embodiment:https://www.redbeardsomatictherapy.com/Follow us on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RedBeardSomaticTherapyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/redbeardsomatictherapyLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexandermgreene

Richard Horan first arrived at Esalen in the mid 1960s, traveling from Los Angeles to Big Sur at the height of a cultural renaissance. He was an early member of the Esalen massage crew and played a pivotal role in founding the Esalen Garden, a space that continues to nourish the land and community today. He was also deeply involved in the psychedelic inquiry of the time. Over the years, his connections to Esalen deepened: with Gabrielle Roth he had a son, Jonathan Horan. Later, he married Peggy Horan, and together they raised two daughters, Lucia and Jasmine. Horan's purpose as an artist was revealed to him during his time at Esalen when he founded the Art Barn as a collective with other artists.  Horan remains legendary in Big Sur for his mastery of jade carving. His work includes rings, earrings, pendants, belt buckles, and sculptures, many of which are inspired by ancient esoteric symbols and indigenous traditions. His signature earrings are renowned for their thin-cut jade, which allows light to pass through. As a multi media artist, he has worked in depth with clay, redwood and jade, making musical instruments, art objects and jewelry. Today, we'll hear from Richard as he reflects on his journey—his artistic process, his connection to Esalen, and the life he has built in harmony with the wild nature of Big Sur. In view of the numerous health problems Americans have that are related to sexual issues, I need to take a respectful and scholarly approach to discuss: sex, orgasms, and improving whole health through healthier sexual relations. Many of the topics today are taboo for some because of social beliefs or absolute embarrassment, but again, I'm sharing some insights and some of my reading research to help people understand what lies under so many health issues from weight loss to movement constrictions to mental health and more--and it's about sex--or the absence of it altogether. Take what works for you; discard what does not apply...and take care of yourself too. Here are the books I recommended at the end of the show:"Ending Female Pain: A Woman's Manual; The Ultimate Self-Help Guide for Women Suffering from Chronic Pelvic and Sexual Pain" by Isa Herrera, MSPT, CSCS (2009)"Women's Anatomy of Arousal" by Sheri Winston, CNM, RN, BSN, LMT (2017)"Tantric Intimacy" by Katrina Bos (2017)"Sandstone Seduction: Rivers and Lovers, Canyons and Friends" by Katie Lee (2004)"Maps to Ecstasy: teachings of an urban shaman" by Gabrielle Roth (1989)*"Sensual Orchids" photo by Ron Jones

Today we're opening up the vault to share an extraordinary archival recording from one of the most influential figures in Esalen's history, Frederic Spiegelberg — and while that name might not be as immediately recognizable as some of the luminaries who graced Esalen's grounds, like Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, or Gabrielle Roth, understanding Frederic Spiegelberg and his place in Esalen mythology might be key to understanding Esalen itself . . . because in truth, without Frederic Spiegelberg, there might well never have been an Esalen at all. In 1950, Esalen co-founder Michael Murphy was just another Stanford student when he, by complete accident, attended one of Friedric Spiegelberg's philosophy courses. As recounted in Jeffrey Kripal's fantastic book, “Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religions,” that single class would become an initiatory event that transformed Murphy's life forever, providing a pivotal bridge into the metaphysical, the mystical, and the psychical realms, dimensions that would go on to define the course of his life. The recording you're about to hear takes place in 1968, nearly two decades after Michael Murphy's satori. Frederic Spiegelberg, as you'll hear, is still a force to be reckoned with. He speaks of the convergence between Eastern and Western thought, the transformative power of spiritual experience, and the boundless capacity for human growth. And as you listen to this beautiful recording, originally made on half-inch reel to reel tape that we've recently uncovered in the Esalen vault, dusted off, digitized, and are in the process of joyfully rediscovering, maybe consider this: that you're not just hearing a lecture from the past. Instead, you're taking part in a transmission. A thread that connects the early days of Esalen to the present moment. You're stepping into the very space where minds were opened and spirits awakened and the seeds of some sort of transformation were sown.

In this episode, Sophie Bolton takes us on a journey into the transformative power of ecstatic dance, revealing how music and movement can serve as a gateway to profound connection, healing, and self-discovery. Sophie shares her personal ethos of dance as a vehicle for presence, emphasising its ability to awaken the body's innate wisdom without the need for external substances. Through ecstatic dance, participants are invited to respond to the primal rhythms of the music, tapping into their own consciousness and unleashing their inner magic. She discusses how dance has been overshadowed by drugs and alcohol in our culture but sees it as a path to reclaiming our innate joy and healing. Drawing from her own experiences with anxiety, Sophie illuminates how movement serves as a potent tool for grounding and releasing mental loops, bringing individuals back into their bodies and the present moment. She envisions a future where dance spaces are accessible in public areas like stations and airports, fostering human connection amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life. Sophie delves into the essence of ecstatic dance and discusses practices like Gabrielle Roth's Five Rhythms. She explores the primal expression and hedonistic joy inherent in ecstatic dance, allowing participants to reconnect with their primal selves and evoke raw emotions in a safe and supportive environment. The conversation extends to the tender exploration of sexuality within dance, emphasising the healing potential of embodied movement and intentional music selection. Sophie emphasises the importance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can authentically express themselves without judgment. Throughout the discussion, Sophie shares insights from her own journey, including transformative experiences with Samantha Sweetwater in California and the profound connection fostered through silent headphone dances during the COVID-19 pandemic. She underscores the importance of reconnecting with nature and embracing a childlike sense of wonder in dance and in life. Looking ahead, Sophie envisions a future where dance is readily accessible to all, with public spaces repurposed to accommodate community gatherings and ecstatic expression. Through her passion and dedication, Sophie invites listeners to join her in reclaiming the power of dance as a sacred pathway to self-discovery, healing, and communal connection. Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series! On this edition we welcome @hvidmand In the early hours of June 19, 2024, as the first light of dawn kissed the tranquil waters of a nearby lake, hvidmand embarked on a musical journey that transcends time and space. Utilizing the energy of the sunrise, he crafted a DJ set that blends 20 years of expertise with the raw beauty of nature. This set, recorded illegally by tapping power from a nearby restaurant, is a testament to the power of creativity and the human spirit. hvidmand's latest release is a masterful collection of meticulously selected tracks, each with a vocal element, woven together to tell a meaningful story that touches the soul. Featuring songs released before 2010, and even some dating back to 2005, every track is presented in lossless quality and mastered personally by hvidmand for an unparalleled audiophile experience. The set defies conventional structure, with BPMs ranging from 105 to 128, creating a dynamic, non-linear flow. hvidmand incorporates the 5Rhythms model, a modern interpretation of ecstatic dance developed by Gabrielle Roth in the 1970s. This approach explores the five emotional cycles, balancing positive and negative emotions to create a deeply immersive experience. hvidmand's deep understanding of how humans perceive sound frequencies, supported by electroencephalography (EEG) studies, allows him to craft a set that continuously stimulates the brain. By adding and removing frequencies, he creates a healing experience that tickles the mind and soothes the soul. I hope you will enjoy this journey as much as I did! Beloveds!I am so excited to be sending this special creation your way.A month or so ago, my soul started… shouting. One word.Loud and clear:Dance. With nearly 2-years of collective trauma and stress built up like gunky blah stuck to my bones, I felt not only ready… but frankly, desperate. My own internal tide had turned, and Life Life Life wanted to undulate through me, possibly more than ever before.So. Everyone Has a Plan Until They Get Punched in the Mouth

Few things are as annoying as unsolicited advice, for within it lies the assumption of superior wisdom.(So when you tell a person your PLAN for what THEY should do, always be aware that they secretly want to punch you in the mouth.) Uh-oh. Did I just give you some unsolicited advice? Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson was listening to a reporter tell him how his opponent planned to beat him in their upcoming boxing match. Mike famously replied, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” There are other interpretations of Mike's famous saying, too. Like how “Plan B” is for when a business person gets punched in the mouth by unforeseen circumstances, and how “Plan C” is for when they get punched in the mouth a second time. When my boss, the wizard, was chancellor of Wizard Academy, he got all the way down to “Plan D,” and now Daniel Whittington is putting together “Plan E” because, you know, Covid. Hey! You want a PDF download of the 1998 Business Book of the Year, The Wizard of Ads?  http://rhw.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/TheWizardofAds.pdf (Here you go!) (I don't know how it works in other browsers, but in Safari you'll find “Export as PDF” under your FILE pulldown.) If it seems like my paragraphs aren't connected to each other, it's probably because all my experience is in the rabbit hole and beagles are easily distracted. Speaking of “distracted,” Gabrielle Roth writes, “If you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions. When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence? Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced the loss of soul. Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are the four universal healing salves.” I don't know how it is with people, but dogs are born knowing this! Dance! Sing! Be Enchanted by Stories! Celebrate Silence! It's really not that hard. Just imitate a happy dog. Samuel Butler was born in 1835 and even though that was a long time ago, Samuel understood the happiness of dogs: “The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too.” Dale Carnegie said, “Did you ever see an unhappy horse? Did you ever see a bird that had the blues? One reason why birds and horses are not unhappy is because they are not trying to impress other birds and horses.” I guess it's time to take this plane in for a landing now because the wizard gave me a target word-count and we're getting pretty close to it. Keep in mind that I'm flying solo for the first time, okay? Here's my summary, from a beagle's point-of-view:The events of 2020 will leave their marks on us for the rest of our lives. Having been forced into a more introspective existence by the Covid, many people learned things about themselves that had previously been suppressed. Self-aware people experienced solitude and emerged from it less fixated on the outward trappings of success, and more concerned about the quality of their relationships and their inner lives. Persons unwilling to examine themselves experienced isolation and are filled with anxiousness about things returning to “how they used to be.” There. That's it. Our wheels have touched the ground. “This is your captain speaking. Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived at our destination. We know you have a choice in air travel, and we want to thank you for choosing to fly Beagle Airlines.” Aroo, Indy Beagle

Vinn Arjuna Martí, award-winning choreographer, performer, master teacher, and  founder of  Soul Motion, in conversation with Stefana Serafina about the value of pausing amidst the moving moment, the exploration of self,  relationship, and the psyche through the shapes, energy, and movements of the body in motion,  and on the power of bringing dance to "the citizens", people from all backgrounds who find medicine in practicing one of the most ancient expressive arts.  Vinn Arjuna Martí is an award-winning choreographer, global performer, master teacher and founder of  the  conscious dance practice Soul Motion®. Vinn Arjuna has been teaching movement for over 35 years and along the way has trained and worked with many teachers, including Gabrielle Roth of the 5Rhythms. Arjuna has been passionate about bringing  dance and movement to people of all backgrounds and including those who have never trained or performed as dancers. He teaches around the world, and also  trains teachers and facilitators, while  also continuing  to be a student, guided by his curiosity and respect for others's teachings and ideas.   More about Arjuna's work at www.soulmotion.com   WISDOM QUOTES  ‘Movement is life. What is alive is in motion. So what I say to people who say they don't dance is,  I would like to explore with you, when two notes get together and  strike at the same time, and what shows up as a third force, I'd like for you and I to play with that, and to realize the unseen.”     “I always aligned myself with the citizen. Even as a technique oriented dancer, even as a member of the inner circles of 5Rhythms, something always spoke to my heart about wanting to include the excluded. Because everyone thinks, everyone moves… My heart has always been full of desire to reach all people, because all people can shift weight, and all people breathe, and all people focus attention, and all people can have a response… So it's always been a passion of mine to not keep what I have for the “initiated people”, or to somehow separate myself from the citizen."   “The pause-presence is a holy place. It is a whole place. When we pause within being present, the place, the space, the room have a “whole” vibration, a whole signature, a totality of all of us being, listening, doing, understanding, standing under un umbrella that we all share. Something occurs that is not the traditional reaction to stimulus. Pausing is spiritual work, no  doubt about it…. For me too It's too easy to be swept into reaction and to leave what my teacher calls the “base state”, which is that place of presence where the thinking mind is  on relax, and i am truly present to the continuation of what I call the movement moment… There is such great  medicine and  value of pausing within the movement moment, within the continuity of thought patterns, emotional feelings, sound, and shapes of the body, and saying: I am going to pause in the presence of what is occurring and shape-shifting right now, within and without.  For me, pause-presence is the most dynamic part of my dance: That opportunity to sense and understand my total body being guided and lifted and impressed by everyone in the room.”
