Step aside, Gregorian chants—there's a new nun in town. In this episode of For the Love of History, we uncover the wild, visionary life of Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th-century nun who defied expectations to become a composer, mystic, healer, and all-around medieval rock star. You'll hear how Hildegard went from being entombed in a convent as a child to dropping musical bangers that shook up church music, writing radical medical texts on women's health (yes, she even touched on abortion in the 1100s!), and preaching across Europe well into her 60s. From her dazzling visions to her groundbreaking music to her bold writings on medicine and women's health, Hildegard wasn't just holy—she was revolutionary. And she proves that sometimes the most unexpected women in history leave the loudest echoes. ✨ What You'll Learn in This Episode: Who was Hildegard von Bingen and why she still matters How her visions transformed medieval mysticism Why her music broke rules and made her one of the first recognized female composers in history Her surprising work in medicine and women's health How Hildegard became a symbol of women in medieval history who refused to stay silent If Hildegard could go on tour in her 60s, you can definitely hit that subscribe button! Don't miss more stories of women in history who bent the rules, rewrote the script, and changed the world.

Gargie Verma is an award-winning, genre-defying artist whose voice carries the soul of centuries and the spark of modern fire. Gargie's journey began in a traditional Vedic Hindu family in India, where she was immersed in ancient devotional music from birth. But her destiny was far from conventional. Drawn to the sounds of the world, she has traveled to over 17 countries, absorbing and collaborating across cultures, evolving into a singular voice in global music.A rare force in today's musical landscape, Gargie expresses her artistry through multiple powerful identities — each a portal to a different world of sound and spirit. As Halo Reminiscence, she unveils sensual, mystical pop infused with poetry and emotion. With Mama India Music, she offers sacred sound journeys rooted in Dhrupad, Nada Yoga, and rare Vedic traditions, awakening healing and presence through voice. And in her electrifying act Forbidden Lovers, Gargie fuses ancient Indian folk, Sufi, and classical melodies with English hip-hop, EDM, and modern dance music — delivering cinematic, high-energy performances that ignite the senses and turn every stage into a realm of story, rhythm, and rebellion. Forbidden Lovers is not just a show — it's a dazzling fusion experience that turns the lamp on in the dark.Having made her mark in Mumbai through Bollywood music and live performances, Gargie has since worked in films, cross-genre music projects, and global festivals, crafting a body of work that's emotionally raw, spiritually charged, and artistically fearless.Today, she is deeply rooted in the Dhrupad tradition and committed to preserving and reviving ancient, endangered musical forms from around the world. With every breath and every note, she bridges past and future, earth and cosmos.Gargie Verma is not just an artist — she is a bridge between worlds, a living symphony of soul, story, and sound. We talk about Gargie's life journey, her family, finding Dhrupad, her musical projects, freedom, fearlessness, and love.  She shares some live music, and we listen to Jugni a song she recorded about the free goddess. She has a sound bath on May 9th, Forbidden Lovers is performing at the Colony on July 11th, and she holds Dhrupad classes on Thursdays and Sundays in Woodstock. Jessie McLachlan has an extraordinary story.Growing up in Brisbane and helping take care of her grandmother throughout high school meant a unique experience. After school, she chased her music dreams over in New York but ran into a medical problem which left her with a $500,000 bill! She stayed resilient and overcame this challenge and went on to study in California and follow her family lineage of doctors. She became a doctor for some huge celebrities and found herself on private jets and living a wild life! But the thing I love most about her story is what she is doing now for homelessness in both USA and Australia. Chloë Goodchild in conversation with acoustics pioneer, scientist, & inventor, John Stuart Reid, discussing compassion, his experiences in the Great Pyramid, healing, sound therapy, low-frequency sound, and much more. The VOCE Dialogues offer a simple, accessible in-depth ground for poets, authors, musicians, visual artists, and visionary teachers to share and disseminate their insights about the transformative practice of contemplative, creative and compassionate communication.John Stuart Reid is an acoustic-physics scientist with a mission to educate, inspire, and excite the world in the field of visible sound—known to science as Faraday Wave phenomena, but popularly known as “cymatics”. John points out that since sound was a potent force in the creation of life in the primordial oceans, sound therefore, carries the power to heal life. In his frequent lectures, he reveals ground-breaking information on the mechanisms that underpin Sound Therapy and Music Medicine, and how it can be applied to improve health naturally. John's career in acoustics has spanned five decades and he is widely acknowledged as an authority in cymatic science, speaking on this subject at conferences in Europe and America. His CymaScope invention has changed our perception of sound forever: seeing sound allows us to understand this omnipresent aspect of our world and universe fuller and deeper. In 2021 he was invited by a European Union initiative to write a chapter for a new medical textbook on Sound Therapy and Music Medicine, a mission to begin building bridges between mainstream medicine and integrative medicine, a mission that continues to this day.https://cymascope.com/Chloë Goodchild is an international singer, innovatory educator, author and founder of The Naked Voice (1990) and its UK Charitable Foundation (2004), dedicated to the realization of compassionate communication in all realms of human life. Deafness in childhood catalysed Chloë's deep encounter with her inner self, and began a lifetime's experiential research into the voice as a catalyst for personal evolution and global transformation.https://www.chloegoodchild.com/

Dr. Nieman begins the show by sharing some striking statistics: of the 26 million older Americans who currently experience a clinically significant degree of hearing loss, only 3 million actually use hearing aids. Disparities in hearing care may arise from individual factors such as financial situation and patient education, but they can also arise from structural factors like physical distance from ENTs and audiologists. Dr. Nieman believes that the conventional model of clinic-based hearing care can be augmented by different models of care delivery, specifically one that makes use of community health workers. She describes the HEARS (Hearing Health Equity Through Accessible Research and Solutions) Program that she developed and how her team trained older adult peer mentors to guide patients through education about over-the-counter hearing devices, communication strategies, and living with hearing loss. She emphasizes that these devices can be a gateway that leads patients to feel more comfortable with hearing aids later on. For ENTs looking to reduce hearing care disparities, Dr. Nieman recommends that they learn how their patients want to engage with the world, provide patients with multiple options for hearing care, and collaborate with other players who are working towards the same goal. --- RESOURCES HEARS Program: https://jhucochlearcenter.org/hears-hearing-equality-through-accessible-research-solutions.html Access HEARS: http://accesshears.com/ Hearing Loss Association of America: https://www.hearingloss.org/ Dr. Nieman's Twitter: @CarrieNiemanMD
