Corey Thompson is coming home. The new head men's basketball coach at Winston-Salem State University returns as the first ever alumnus to guide the program on the hardwood. Corey not only played there, earning back-to-back CIAA titles in the late 90's, he met his wife there. Winston provides the earliest beginnings of a budding family that'll now replant their flag in the triad. For Thompson, he's already 'living the dream.' Most recently a high school head coach with stops along the way at multiple colleges as an assistant, Thompson charts the emotional journey he and his family have taken to this point, including the feelings of euphoria following his appointment in early July. Plus, he describes the influences most at play in shaping him into the coach, husband, and father he's become today. And, Thompson shares how he most intends to 'protect the legacy' at Winston-Salem State. He's finished in the high 7s and low 8s at each event, breaking records at both RMRW and Race Week. Ryan and Tami are going to have their hands full but it is possible. They currently have 72 points from Summit Racing Midwest Drags and Hot Rod Drag Week. They will need to Complete the event (this is the first time they have attempted three events in a year) for 26 points. Plus win their class for 7 more points - we haven't heard which class they are running but the Unlimited class has seen high 4 second finishes. They'll need to finish with a 4 second average netting them another 4 points. And lastly, they'll need to reset their Class ET Average Record, which for Unlimited is 4.924 of Shawn Lewis from last fall. That nets them the needed final point…. If they can do all of that, they would tie Corey's 110 points. With the tie breaker going to the Faster Car, they take the win since they have low to mid 7 second averages at Midwest Drags and Hot Rod Drag Week. How can you be an expert in your industry, despite not having an educational background? How can you learn to invest and make money like the experts? This is where reading plays a part. By reading more books and learning more about your industry, you will gain more knowledge, experience, insight, and understanding of what the "experts" already know. In this episode of the Jess Marshall Podcast, I had a blast with Corey Thompson of @Roughneck 2 Real Estate . I was reminded this last weekend of a lesson that I've learned over the past year. We can't control the amount of time that we get to spend with others but we can control the impact that we have on their lives while they're here. Even short time periods can be opportunities to impact people's lives. This was proven to me last Friday when I met Corey Thompson who is on the Bearer's of the Oath cadre. I shared a conversation with Corey for about 45 minutes and that short amount of time impacted me because of who he is and because of the love and passion he displays.Let's take advantage of opportunities to impact others, it might be exactly what they need.Special thanks to our sponsor Wood's Forcible Entry Door Kits. It's far too premature for the "this is our year" chants to start circulating with any genuine intent but the first match of Nathan Brown's tenure offered hope the Warriors will be a different beast in 2021.Central Coast Stadium in Gosford, the Warriors' adopted home for the foreseeable future, turned on sweltering conditions on Saturday afternoon. Temperatures soared past 31 degrees which made drink breaks mandatory and left the big men in the middle battling for breath.By the finish, there was only one team hacking the heat.Tries to Bayley Sironen, one of eight new signings this season, Leeson Ah Mau and Kodi Nikorima propelled the Warriors to an impressive 19-6 opening round victory over the Gold Coast Titans, widely tipped to provide much sterner tests after luring Origin stars David Fifita and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui during the offseason.Brown, taking the reins of his third NRL club, was expected to improve the Warriors attack by bringing back the offload and significantly bolstering the forward pack after acquiring the likes of Addin Fonua-Blake and Ben Murdoch-Masila.Fonua-Blake impressed on club debut by carrying for 192 metres - his late footwork at the line, offloads and leg drive proving difficult to handle.Yet this win, in the energy-sapping heat, revealed a committed defensive attitude not seen from the Warriors for some time, with constant pressure forcing frequent mistakes from the Titans, who scored their only try through Corey Thompson with six minutes remaining.Bunty Afoa's impact off the bench and Tohu Harris' consistent efforts in the middle of the park helped lay the platform as the Warriors completed a remarkable 91 per cent of their sets (39-43) - that control merely one positive sign. The Warriors' kicking game struggled at times but Nikorima recovered from second-half cramp to assume responsibility and steadily build on the Warriors' 6-0 halftime advantage. The Warriors also had to battle on after losing hooker Wayde Egan and Sironen to head knocks in the second half. While attacking highlights were few and far between in the first spell, the Warriors defence stood out.Roger Tuivasa-Sheck pulled off two try-saving tackles, Peta Hiku and new signing Sironen put on big shots. But the most impressive stand came to close out the first half, with the Warriors repelling three repeat sets on their own line.Former Souths back-rower Sironen made an early impression with his shot forcing an error and he then scored the Warriors' first try of the season with a simple hit and spin to expose tiring Titans defence. The Warriors could have applied more pressure in the first half but several Chanel Harris-Tavita bombs to the corner lacked height to hand over possession without a contest.Led, as always, by Ken Maumalo, the Warriors backline did a solid job of helping their pack bring the ball out of their half.As far as starts go, Brown could not have asked for much more, not least given the Warriors have lost 17 round-one matches in their history. Now for the consistency Brown has demanded since taking charge.Warriors 19 (Bayley Sironen, Leeson Ah Mau, Kodi Nikorima tries; Nikorima 3 cons, Chanel Harris-Tavita field goal)Titans 6 (Corey Thompson try; Ashley Taylor con)HT: 6-0text by Liam Napier, NZ Herald

Wests Tigers Podcast was pleased to welcome Wests Tigers General Manager of Football, Adam Hartigan, as a special guest this week. Adam joined the Club in July 2019 from the Roosters, and, alongside Michael Maguire, is determined to bring change to the Club. So, our initial discussion was about how Adam arrived at Wests Tigers, and what the General Manager of Football role entails. Hartigan talked about the situation regarding Harry Grant, the recent release of Corey Thompson, and the departure of Ryan Matterson last season. Other issues included recruitment philosophy, our forward pack, salary cap management, home grounds, and what the Wests Tigers can do to engage more fans and encourage them to become members. Players discussed included Shawn Blore, Luciano Leilua, BJ Leilua, Adam Doueihi, Zane Musgrove, and some younger players coming through at the Club. He also spoke about the developing Centre of Excellence, the current Wests Tigers temporary headquarters at Cintra Park, the current mindset within the Club, and goals moving forward. A number of fans' questions from both the Wests Tigers Forum and Wests Tigers Podcast Facebook page were also addressed as best as possible. Engagement between this Podcast, fans and Club management is greatly appreciated. Adam was forthright and generous with his time, and we hope to continue this relationship as a semi-regular guest on the Wests Tigers Podcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Another solid performance from the Wests Tigers against the Bunnies on the weekend, but again no reward. On this edition of the Wests Tigers Podcast we look at where the Tigers could have been better, where Souths had the advantage and discussing the some of the somewhat dubious refeering decisions. We also look at the whole game day experience in 2019, particularly around the lack of lower grade games and ask whether rugby league is better for value for money and a better spectacle than it used to be? We look at the selection and what it might mean not just for Moses and the Maroons, but also for the Wests Tigers. Corey Thompson remains unsigned at the club, how big a priority is it for Wests Tigers to lock him up? And we look at the possibility of New Zealand skipper Dallin Watene-Zelezniak wearing the black, gold and white of the Wests Tigers before June 30.
