In the late 1970s, professor Dr. Charles Scudder and his companion Joey Odom left their lives in Chicago behind for simpler lives in the mountains of Georgia. There, they built their home by hand and furnished it with occult books and symbology. They frequently welcomed guests into their Pink Room for "parties." Eventually, the wrong person was let in, and tragic consequences followed.SOURCEShttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/114723296/joseph_d-odomThe Corpsewood Manor Murders in North Georgia - Amy Petulla (2016)Atlanta Constitution articles Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/autumn-s-oddities--5307439/support.

Charles Scudder and his partner, Joseph Odom, moved to the town of Trion, Georgia to escape the hustle and bustle of city life in Chicago and live on their own terms. Many in the town were not happy with the couple's arrival due to their unorthodox lifestyle. Eventually acceptance grew when they realized Charles and Joseph had no ill intention toward anyone. Some of the towns people even became friends with the couple whether they enjoyed the couples' company, attended parties or partook in Charles' homemade wine. It was a peaceful life for six years before two men they thought were friends took their lives as well as their beloved dogs lives in a brutal attack. Tune in as Savannah shares the story of how these two peculiarly creative souls were taken too soon and Elysia is reminded of how one's intuition of impending death can make a person do otherwise strange things. Hidden away in the deep, dark woods of the Chattahoochee National Forest was once an isolated mansion that was the object of terror to most of the people who lived in the small town of Summerville, Georgia.A terror that lingers to this day.It was on the chilly night of December 12 that year that a secluded house became a place of torture and bloodshed. The name of the house – Corpsewood Manor – seems like something right out of a horror novel, but on that dark night, the terror was unbelievably real.Check out our updated website and sign up for our newsletter at AmericanHauntingsPodcast.comWant an episode every week, plus other awesome perks and discounts? The story of Corpsewood Manor is one of the more intriguing true crime stories, because it does have elements of the occult and the paranormal. I love when we get to do a deep dive into people who march to the beat of their own drummer. There's only so much "they lit up a room" mindset you can take before you want to know who people actually are. It's a shame Dr. Charles Scudder and Joseph Odom didn't have many more years of the life they envisioned when they came to Georgia. The US, and Appalachia, wasn't always the most welcoming of people who were so blatantly different. What do you think of the paranormal element to the story? Do you think Corpsewood is haunted, or cursed? Do the ghosts of Charles, Joseph, or the dogs still roam the homestead? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.Send in those paranormal stories of your own to obscureappalachia@gmail.com for inclusion on an upcoming episode. We have talked about the Satanic Panic before and when we have researched it Corpsewood Manor always seemed to pop up. We decided to deep dive into the case and were shocked at what we found. This is a case of two gay men choosing to live off the grid, mind their own business and chose decor that was geared toward Satan. However, pure greed is what caused the murder of these two men, but the media focused less on the truth and more on blaming these two for a lifestyle they did not agree with. Kat covers the eerie legend of Corpsewood Manor, a secluded residence in the woods of Georgia, built by hand by a Satanist and his Catholic boyfriend. Dr. Charles Shudder and Joseph Odom were truly living their best lives. Maybe they didn't have electricity, but they were never short on LSD, skulls, or pentagrams. Much like a horror movie, this true crime story takes a dark turn. Next, Hayley steps into the shadowy world of the Witness Protection Program. You have to give up your name and identity as a witness, but you will be protected by the government, and if you're lucky you might just get them to pay for your BBL! https://linktr.ee/NightClassy Produced by Parasaur Studios © 2023 Witness Protection Program Sources: https://ravallirepublic.com/news/local/history-with-phil-the-witness-protection-program/article_32d2a543-d9e4-5cd7-88b2-a4272985651d.html https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/649685/witness-protection-program-facts https://books.google.com/books?id=98UWxdVcbqgC&q=LaFolla#v=snippet&q=penile&f=false https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/77695/12-secrets-witness-protection-program https://people.howstuffworks.com/witness-protection.htm#:~:text=Victims%20of%20crimes%20committed%20by,funeral%20costs%20and%20lost%20wages. https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/security/a26016360/witness-protection-program/ https://thisiscriminal.com/episode-104-witness-12-7-2018 Corpsewood Manor Sources: https://www.atlantamagazine.com/great-reads/the-corpsewood-murders-40-years-later/ https://www.churchofsatan.com/tragic-case-dr-charles-lee-scudder/ https://allthatsinteresting.com/corpsewood-manor-murders https://the-line-up.com/corpsewood-manor https://m.box.com/shared_item/https%3A%2F%2Fapp.box.com%2Fs%2Fm31qs99380qa5v0hg0sgnb8g3f23zn9w https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43687/the-tyger

The true crime this episode features is a recent event dating back to just the 1980s. It is a crime that shook the small town of Summerville, Georgia. A gay couple lost their lives during the robbery of their home, Corpsewood Manor, which was located in an isolated area of the woods. The manor is just a ruin today due to a fire, but it attracts visitors of all kinds from teenagers looking for a party hangout to paranormal investigators.
Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest is the former site of a brick mansion, now lying in partial ruin. Hand-built in 1977 by Dr. Charles L. Scudder, a retired professor at Loyola University in Chicago, and his partner Joseph “Joey” Odom, the mansion served as the couple's dream home until their deaths. In December of 1982, the pair were gruesomely murdered, along with their two bullmastiffs, as a result of an attempted robbery by two acquaintances, Avery Brock and Tony West. During the ensuing investigation and trial – fueled partially by a local media circus – a mythos evolved in which the victims were vilified as “evil devil worshippers,” drawing from Dr. Scudder's interest in the occult and the pair's open homosexuality. Despite having been very well-liked in the community by those who knew them, the horrendous mythos continues to this day, and many locals still refer to the area as, “Devil Worshippers' Mountain,” and claim that taking a brick from the property will lead to being cursed for life.... This is a case straight out of an 80s Horror Film. It has everything from a creepy castle in the woods, home to "devil worshippers", to sex parties to multiple murders. But at its core, this is a tragic case of two people just trying to escape the judgement of the world and carve out their own secluded paradise in the woods. They tried to escape the horrors of the outside world, only to find them knocking right at their door. In the pursuit of an idyllic lifestyle and freedom, a couple from Chicago bought a secluded property, far away from the modern big cities. They wanted to become closer to nature, and be free from prying eyes into their hedonistic lifestyle. The local legend has it, that the land is haunted by the devil and the souls of the murdered owners. Some people claim to have heard screams or the barking of phantom dogs, as well as to have seen the glowing eyes of two mastiffs… even sometimes shadowy figures roaming, and standing guard over the property. But why would the land be haunted by the devil, you may ask? Well... the thing is that the main subject of today's story, Charles Scudder, was an openly gay member of the Church of Satan, and the property he chose to purchase was located in a small, sleepy town in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia.Following the murders, some people believed that it was a satanic-related crime. But was it a crazy LSD-fueled kind of black magic ritual or just a robbery justified by prejudice?Subscribe and share 10 Minute Murder with your true crime loving friends.
