But the evening gets interesting when sparks fly between Claudia and her brother's handsome friend Leo Fish (Dylan McDermott).Be sure to subscribe on your favorite pod platform and our YOUTUBE channel!Visit thecultworthy.comVisit https://www.themoviewire.comVideo: https://www.youtube.com/@back2thebalcony
Ryan and Dylan are joined by friend and film critic Camden Ferrell to discuss Happiness, Todd Solondz's disturbing and uncomfortable take on American Suburbia.
Kerry and Collin are joined by Cinema Femme's founder Rebecca Martin Fagerholm to talk about Jodie Foster's ensemble comedy "Home For The Holidays," starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey, Jr., Anne Bancroft, Charles Durning, Cynthia Stevenson, Dylan McDermott, Geraldine Chaplin and Steve Guttenberg (wow!). Of all the holiday movies in the Family-Gathers-Together-For-The-Holidays sub-genre, this one gets it so, so right above many others. Why does Collin hold it in such high regard? How did Downey's behavior and antics effect the overall outcome of the film? How much food was cooked for the Thanksgiving scene and what happened to all of it. All this, plus Collin talks about the latest and greatest in physical media for the Blu-ray Gift Exchange. Blu-ray movies covered: Sony: "American Movie" 4K (1999) Warner Bros: "The Hitcher" 4K (1986) Criterion: "Pandora's Box" (1929) "Demon Pond" (1979) Val Lewton Double Feature: "I Walked With A Zombie" and "The Seventh Victim" (1943) Warner Archive: "The Prairie Home Companion" (2006) "Bathing Beauty" (1944) "Journey Into Fear" (1943) Universal: "Touch" (2024)

Tune in as Pride Month keeps advancing forward on the show! For the third episode of June, Cory McCullough, AKA Gory Cory (The Scream Teens from Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad), hops into the guest seat for a review and recap of Jennifer's Body, the 2009 horror-comedy that had initially been torn apart and deemed to be a dud, but now has rightfully grown into a queer and feminist cult classic. The misogyny and sexual objectification that Megan Fox has had to endure from Hollywood, R-slurs and other aspects that stamp a late-2000s air onto the movie, and Arthur learning about the existence of Super Target comprise a few of the discussion topics for this episode. Directed by Karyn Kusama, Jennifer's Body stars Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody, Sal Cortez, Ryan Levine, Juan Riedinger, Colin Askey, Chris Pratt, Juno Rinaldi, Kyle Gallner, Josh Emerson, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Cynthia Stevenson, Nicole Leduc, Aman Johal, and Valerie Tian. Jodie Foster considers this the second in an extremely personal trilogy of films she directed. Little Man Tate and The Beaver round out that trilogy. The always excellent Holly Hunt goes home to spend Thanksgiving with her very dysfunctional family. Robert Downey Jr. is insanely wonderful and wonderfully insane as her black sheep brother. Anne Bancroft and Charles Durning play the parents doing everything in their power to keep the family together and the holiday tradition alive. Cynthia Stevenson completes the family as the tightly wound oldest sister. The entire cast is extraordinary and the writing and directing is so sharp. It's like a Thanksgiving David Mamet cinematic feast! If you saw this underrated gem and enjoyed it too, let us know. We're joined by hosts of 30 Years Later Podcast, Ricky Camilleri and Chris Chafin, to discuss Todd Solondz's grimly funny ensemble comedy 'Happiness'. We discuss the writer/director's singular talent for handling "sticky" subject matter and characters, the film's remarkably prescient and timely themes of emmiseration and depravity in modern American existence, and why current media discourse and trends are especially averse to embracing the brilliance of Solondz's deeply nuanced portrayals. Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you saved room for a healthy helping of nostalgia, with the 1995 thanksgiving movie 'Home for the Holidays'! Directed by Jodi Foster and starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Anne Bancroft, Cynthia Stevenson, Steve Guttenberg, Geraldine Chaplin, Dylan McDermott, and Claire Danes. On the fourth Thursday in November, over 84 million American families will gather together... And wonder why.
Oh Judy! We're not quite sure what went wrong with Judy Blume's only filmic adaptation (actually we do: we blame Lawrence and his flat direction and Michelle Branch soundtrack!) Thankfully we still have the original source material, which despite its age, remains a powerful and affecting tale of grief, mother/daughter relationships and finding solace in an older boy who doesn't like you romantically!Sadly the film leans into the trope-y YA romance, so despite solid performances by Willa Holland and Tatanka Means, this isn't the film we want! Plus: a criminally underused Amy Jo Johnson? Unforgivable!Wanna connect with the show? You can never go home again, but that doesn't stop us all from trying at the holidays every year. 1995's "Home for the Holidays" is hardly the feel-good Thanksgiving romantic comedy you might expect from the trailer, but is a surprisingly realistic and thought-provoking story that sent us on many tangents this week about our own feelings on holiday traditions, why this year is different and what from the past we try to carry into the future. But we also have much to say about some real BSA-worthy performances from Anne Bancroft as the meddling mother and Geraldine Chaplin as the kooky aunt, plus of course star Holly Hunter, Charles Durning, Steve Guttenberg, Cynthia Stevenson, Dylan McDermott and an insufferable Robert Downey Jr, and a divine Angela Paton as the chatty woman on the plane eating a chicken wing. We chat about “Mama”, episode 9 of Sleepy Hollow and one of its best episodes ever. Abbie and Jenny take center stage when a murderous ghost shows up at Tarrytown Psych. This was Sleepy Hollow at its very best. Nicole Beharie and Lyndie Greenwood gave aware winning performances in this deeply emotional episode. The closeness of the two Mills sisters coming face to face with the mother who abandoned them was breathtaking. In a season that has centered on Katrina and her captivity, it was a joy to follow Abbie and Jenny, as well as Orlando Jones’s Irving for an entire episode. This was a well needed change of pace, both with deep emotional impact as well as an interesting and much more subtle villain in Cynthia Stevenson’s Nurse Lambert. This was Sleepy Hollow at its very best.
