Writer/director/actor Courtney Davis returns to the podcast to help us judge Alan J. Pakula's 1990 legal thriller PRESUMED INNOCENT starring Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, Bonnie Bedelia, Brian Dennehy, Paul Winfield and Greta Scacchi. Based on the best-selling novel by Scott Turow, PRESUMED INNOCENT spins the engrossing tale of a respected prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague. To give away any more of the plot would be a crime in itself. A box office hit upon release, the story has resurfaced in a new adaptation on Apple TV+ starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. For a movie of highly enjoyable twists and turns (including a still-discussed ending), we highly recommend you see PRESUMED INNOCENT before listening to our spoiler-filled discussion, where we also launch into unrelated sidebars on Casino, Flags of Our Fathers, The Perils of Pauline, Donald Sutherland, Kinds of Kindness, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard's Architectural Digest profile, and much, much more!

1992 was a great year, look no further than WrestleMania VIII and the crowning of the Macho Man Randy Savage as WWF Champion as evidence of that. But it was also a great year for movies, and Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler are ready to fill in a few glaring gaps in their 1992 canons. Brad has Jake watch Robert Altman's the Player, a movie he'd been meaning to see forever. They talk about this slick noir and sendup of the Hollywood system, starring Tim Robbins, Vincent D'Onofrio, Fred Ward, Whoopie Goldberg, and Greta Scacchi. They wrestle with Altman's directorial style and marvel and the height of some of the actors in this film. Jake assigns Brad A Few Good Men, a movie that Brad, like most of the world, had seen one scene of. They talk about the surprising Oscar snubs for director Rob Reiner and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the terrific performances by Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollack, Jack Nicholson, and Wolfgang Bodison. Jake makes the case for Kevin Bacon being historically underrated, and Brad makes the case for the point that Sorkin dialogue became unbearable. Other movies discussed in this episode: Touch of Evil (1958), Nashville (1975), Juice (1992), The Mighty Ducks (1992), White Men Can't Jump (1992), Wayne's World (1992), Alien 3 (1992), Under Siege (1992), Scent of a Woman (1992), Aladdin (1992), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Batman Returns (1992), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), A League of Their Own (1992), My Cousin Vinny (1992), Unforgiven (1992), Gosford Park (2001).

This week Elaine chats with the inspirational Valerie Edmond. We cover so much in today's episode. Everything from the outdated views on the physical appearance of actresses, to knowing your worth in an industry that doesn't always encourage you to value your own time and effort to embracing and loving where you come from. As well as the importance of being an artist and remembering to always say exactly what you are. An uplifting, inspiring beautiful episode from a immensely talented, gifted and giving human. VALERIE EDMOND Valerie is an award-winning actress who began her life in a single end tenement in Springburn, Glasgow before moving to a council estate in Balornock - built in the shadow of The Red Road Flats. To escape break time bullying at her secondary school an English teacher gave Valerie the keys to a long forgotten drama studio and there, using a torch to see, she stepped from darkness into the technicolour world of William Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Christina Rosetti and Edwin Morgan. Valerie became the youngest person to ever attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Conservatoire) set up her own theatre company on leaving, and has gone on to work with Stephen Frears, Gavin Millar, Vadim Jean, Daniel Craig, Greta Scacchi, David Harewood Peter Capaldi and Brian Cox amongst others, winning nominations and awards for her performances on film and television. She also uses her voice - currently narrating a series of award-winning campaigns promoting health throughout Scotland for the Scottish Government, the BBC and remains a key worker throughout COVID-19 for services to broadcasting. In 2020, when Covid prevented the Scottish Legion/Poppy Scotland from collecting funds, Valerie approached the barracks of Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish War Memorial Monument and read the battalion names of those who died for Scotland in WW2 as the sun came up. Remembrance Sunday Like Elaine, Valerie Edmond is a founder member of the Class Network for Equity, a curator of the ‘Who's Afraid of the Working Class” event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, an award-winning actor, producer, and author currently writing, Working Class Heroes in the Performing Arts - A Handbook. She has appeared in Outlander, Succession and Lessons of the Hour- Fredrick Douglass - a ten screen immersive film installation by artist Isaac Julien currently showing around the world and last month on the giant Piccadilly Circus screens in central London. Still raising her children, Valerie returns to an industry mired in controversy and has switched on her torch once more, campaigning for ERA, speaking in Parliament on behalf of Equity, The Musician's Union and the Writer's Guild to support working class portrayal, content and representation across all platforms in the arts finding ways to shine a light for those who would otherwise stay in the dark. As part of Radio 3’s celebration of female composers, Michael Berkeley draws together some of his guests who have championed works by women. Turner Prize-winner Helen Cammock introduces the 17th-century Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi, and actor Greta Scacchi tells the story of her discovery of the 18th-century musician and composer Maria Cosway. There is music too by Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century writer, abbess and mystic, who is a role model for scientist Uta Frith; and a discussion of Clara Schumann and her complex relationship with husband Robert from biographer Lucasta Miller. Architect Daniel Libeskind champions the work of the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose work for him conjures up the glittering beauty of modern glass buildings. And Michael Berkeley reveals the answer to the question he’s frequently asked about this programme: which composer gets chosen most often? And the answer is that, apart from Bach, probably the most popular choice of all at the moment – from men, women, young, old, artists, scientists, writers – is Nina Simone. From Hollywood to European art house cinema, from Shakespeare to contemporary drama, Greta Scacchi is one of our most versatile actors. She talks to Michael Berkeley about the film that made her name in 1983 – Heat and Dust – and chooses music from the soundtrack featuring Zakir Hussain. She reveals how her musical training as a child – learning ballet, piano and singing - has been invaluable when she’s been called on to play and sing on film. She particularly loved the character she played in Jefferson in Paris, the eighteenth-century Anglo-Italian artist and musician Maria Cosway, and explains how difficult it was to pretend the play the harp on screen. We hear some of Maria Cosway’s music from that film. Greta chooses music by Satie which reminds her of her mother’s ballet school when she was a child. Her mother is still dancing at 87! And we hear one of Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne, and a Handel aria which illustrate Greta’s passion for the theatre; she chooses pieces which remind her of the places she loves – Sussex, Italy and Australia. We get an insight into her passion for jazz with music from Jimmy Guiffre and Fats Waller. And Greta speaks out about the importance of actors campaigning for causes they believe in – she’s passionate about the environment and even posed naked with a cod to draw attention to unsustainable fishing. Intelligence Squared’s historical and cultural combat events have been thrilling our audiences with their unique blend of entertainment, information and live performance. Here we present the battle of the queens. Both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria set their stamp firmly on their era but which was the greater monarch? On one side stood Philippa Gregory, bestselling author of the Tudor Court series of novels. She made the case for Elizabeth I, with widely acclaimed actor Fiona Shaw bringing this most majestic and flirtatious of rulers to life with readings from her speeches and letters. In the other corner was Daisy Goodwin, writer of last autumn’s hit ITV series Victoria, who will argue the case for her heroine. Award-winning star of stage and screen Greta Scacchi revealed the determination and wit of this most human of monarchs by performing extracts from Victoria’s diaries and personal missives. Chairing the proceedings was celebrated historian and television presenter Dan Jones. Neither Elizabeth nor Victoria grew up expecting to be queen, and each had to struggle to assert herself in a man’s world. As Gregory will argue, Elizabeth managed this by her shrewd intelligence, playing off the men in her court against each other and refusing to dilute her power by marrying, despite the intense pressure of her advisers. As Catholics and Protestants fought wars across Europe, she averted bloodshed in England by consolidating the Protestant revolution begun by her father Henry VIII, expressing her religious tolerance with the famous words, 'I have no desire to make windows into men's souls.' Goodwin made the case that Victoria was not just a great queen but an icon for our own times. Not only did she save the monarchy after a succession of dissolute and incompetent Georgian kings; by embracing marriage and motherhood, she set an example that our own queen and royal family have followed to this day. Her popularity was such that when in 1848 revolutionary uprisings toppled monarchies in France, Austria, Italy and Poland, Victoria’s throne remained secure. Mark and Aaron welcome old friend, Doug McCambridge to talk about Robert Altman's “Don't call it a” comeback film. We touch on the opening tracking shot, what Altman is saying about Hollywood, and yes, we even go into the ending — or both of them. On top of that, we give some tidbits on how to be economical with the Barnes & Noble Criterion Sale. About the film: A Hollywood studio executive with a shaky moral compass (Tim Robbins) finds himself caught up in a criminal situation that would be right at home in one of his movie projects, in this biting industry satire from Robert Altman. Mixing elements of film noir with sly insider comedy, The Player, based on a novel by Michael Tolkin, functions as both a nifty stylish murder story and a commentary on its own making, and it is stocked with a heroic supporting cast (Peter Gallagher, Whoopi Goldberg, Greta Scacchi, Dean Stockwell, Fred Ward) and a lineup of star cameos that make for an astonishing Hollywood who's who. This complexly woven grand entertainment (which kicks off with one of American cinema's most audacious and acclaimed opening shots) was the film that marked Altman's triumphant commercial comeback in the early 1990s. So excited is Al Hinds, he could barely host this week’s Cycling Central podcast without bursting into tears of anxiety. So excited are Phil Gomes and Anthony Tan, they could barely say anything to each other except, ‘How excited are you about Milan-San Remo?’ Thanks to their unbridled professionalism, the trio slowly, but surely, got going. Paris-Nice hailed the arrival of Carlos Betancur, however the lion’s share of the talk came from Milan-San Remo, er, we mean Tirreno-Adriatico, which signalled the return of Alberto Contador and those poor souls he left in his wake, from one side of the sea to the next. Thankfully, Bertie isn’t riding the Giro, though that’s cold comfort to Cadel, whose auspicious start to Season 2014 has been doored, most probably by the God of Time. Speaking of doorings, commuters and recreational cyclists have been copping it thick, hard and fast of late – Al’s been spooked, Gomesy’s peeved, and Tanny’s taken to the home trainer whilst watching the ’92 Milan-San Remo… It’s not looking good as they work themselves into a veritable lather, frothing like a cappuccino steamer at Bar Coluzzi. Of course, the pod would not be replete without talking about Milan-San Remo, which for most of us Australians, begins in the wee hours Monday morning March 24 and will be broadcast live on SBS ONE. La Pompeiana’s gone but the big names remain: Cavendish, Degenkolb, Sagan, Cancellara, Boasson Hagen, van Avermaet, Greipel… As the sultry Carolyn Polhemus (played by Greta Scacchi) said to ‘Rusty’ Sabich (Harrison Ford) in the movie Presumed Innocent before she proceeded to make love to him on the boardroom table, ‘It’s going to be so good...’ The podcast is also available directly on SoundCloud here, but if you'd prefer the direct link so that you your podcast reader updates automatically and you can listen at your leisure, just copy this (http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/10274030-cycling-central/tracks) link into your podcast player.
