Remember when a bunch of dogs saved hundreds of human's lives in Alaska a century ago? In January of 1925, diphtheria, a deadly disease, swept through the village Nome, Alaska… killing multiple children. The town was frozen in for the winter. No roads in or out. No ships able to break through the ice in the sea around it. No planes able to fly through a winter so cold, temperatures on the ground would plummet to nearly -90 degrees Fahrenheit. The only hope to deliver life-saving anti-toxins to the area? Alaska's wildly hearty, determined, and heroic sled dogs. “Take the Dog Sled” (2008) da compositora canadense Alexina Louie, tem oito movimentos que somam 21:48 no total. Esta peça foi escrita em resposta a uma encomenda do excelente maestro Kent Nagano em conjunto com a Orquestra Sinfônica de Montreal (onde ele era o maestro principal na época) para uma apresentação em três cidades (Inukjuak, Kangiqsujuak e Kuujjuuaq) no extremo norte de Quebec (Nunavik). A Sra. Louie trabalhou com os cantores guturais, ouvindo suas canções, conversando com eles e, finalmente, escolhendo as canções que se tornariam parte desta peça. In this episode I talk to Andy Reid MBE. The old adage of ‘Join the Army, see the world’ was certainly true for Andy and he got to see many parts of the globe during his time in the armed forces. We talk all about those adventures from trekking the Grand Canyon, dog sledding in the wilds of Canada and hiking Kilimanjaro. However, back in 2009, his world changed whilst serving in Afghanistan. He stood on an improvised explosive device, losing both his legs and his right arm. But that has certainly not stopped him from travelling and seeing more of the world by sea. We talk all about the importance of accessible travel, why cruises aren’t just for old people and Andy shares some great tales, including run-ins with the police in Tanzania, how a mistaken hand gesture nearly led to his arrest in Vegas and hallucinogenic drinks around a camp fire with some Fijians. A big thanks to Andy for giving up his time and sharing his stories. You can find out more about Andy on his personal website https://www.standingtall.co.uk/ where you will also find links to his autobiography, Standing Tall, which I thoroughly recommend. You can find out more about Andy’s charity the Standing Tall Foundation by visiting their brand-new website. https://www.standingtallfoundation.org.uk/ He can be also be found on Instagram and Twitter as @AndyReid2506. This badass adventurous woman traveled to Alaska in 2017 to watch the famous Iditarod sled dog race, then returned as a volunteer at the Iditarod Ceremonial Start in 2018, and ultimately as a sled dog handler and trainer in 2019 - which is what she's doing now. The Iditarod is nearly 1,000 miles of dog sled racing in brutal conditions along a trail that takes mushers from Anchorage over mountain ranges and flat tundra to the western coast of Alaska, and finally to a town called Nome. Sherri explains that mushing and working with sled dogs is "strenuous, rewarding, fun, exhausting, dirty, peaceful, and so much more complex than what people see depicted in a photograph or video." Sherri DeCoursey graduated from Purdue University with a TRIPLE MAJOR in English and writing, has worked as a writer, editor, and corporate marketer before she completely (and literally) switched gears to start racing go-karts before moving to faster, more powerful cars with roll cages after an accident left her with broken bones, second degree burns and a concussion. She was the first Executive Director of Indiana's ovarian cancer non-profit, was the assistant Executive Director of a service dog non-profit that trained dogs inside Indiana prisons, got her yoga teacher certification and taught yoga around central Indiana, became a rep for Southern Living at Home in-home parties, and has traveled extensively to places like Thailand, Sweden, Central America, the UK, and Europe. Today you'll find her in Alaska working for mushers at their dog kennels training for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Sherri DeCoursey is definitely living a badassery life!
Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart. In this episode, Ian sits down and talks to Jereme Arsenault, owner/operator of Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours. Located in Canmore, Alberta, Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours was founded in 1983 by Jereme's parents, Connie and Charles Arsenault when Canmore was a quiet coal mining town. Surprisingly, sled dog tours were non-existent back in the early 1980's. On December 1st, 1983 Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours sent out it's first commercial sled dog team and blazed the trail for sled dog touring operators in the Bow Valley. Since then, they have grown from 1 dog team and 10 sled dogs to 16 dog teams and 180 sled dogs respectfully! To Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours, it has always been about the remarkable and beautiful sled dogs in their care. https://www.snowyowltours.com https://www.facebook.com/SnowyOwlSledDogTours/ Thanks once again to this week's sponsor Peavey Mart. My guest this week on the Over 50 Health & Wellness podcast is Steve Ortgiesen. Steve is a 70 year old who began body building a little over a year ago. At the beginning of this journey he wrote, “I’m hoping that by telling my story as a 70-year old (young) bodybuilder, others will be inspired to reinvent themselves, to do things they thought impossible, to realize that often we are limited only by our own lack of belief in ourselves.” Steve has led a fascinating life; in this episode we discuss his time as a karate instructor, a member of a Hawaiian canoe team, a dog sledder, and finally how at age 70 he decided to become a body builder. Steve is very inspirational… you won’t want to miss this motivational episode! We woke on our second day of winter camping to sunny skies and warm weather. It was a great day to be out exploring around Hoist Bay on Basswood Lake. We set off in search of firewood and a little exercise. Along the way we encountered dog teams out on a run and talk about how this bay was used back in the logging days. We also talk about how we set up our camp with our canvas tent and titanium wood stove as well as that basics of filtering water in the winter. Join us on day two of our winter camping trip into Basswood Lake.
