Farmer Mental Health: You Are Not Your Tractor

CONTENT WARNING: This episode discusses farm financial stress, identity, and mental health in agriculture, including reference to suicide rates in the farming community. If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. Numbers are listed at the end of these notes. Three to one is the male-to-female suicide ratio in agriculture. Most of the people carrying the hardest financial weight in farming right now are also carrying it alone, measuring their worth by what they produce. Corliss Rassyle has spent decades working in the space between what a farm earns and what a farmer is worth. On the Bone Trail: What Farming Does to Fathers -- Jeff Bennett, Unfiltered 12 days before Father's Day, Jeff Bennett -- a fourth-generation Saskatchewan farmer whose dad's farm sits 800 feet from his own door -- sat down to say the things most fathers in agriculture are thinking and nobody will say out loud. The debt. The legacy. The math that doesn't add up. Whether the farm is a gift or a burden. And whether he can pass it to his sons without crushing them. No panel. No slides. No consulting-speak. Fertilizer Rant with Mario Gaudet and Josh Linville

Growing the Future

Spring 2026 is arriving with a fertilizer market that looks nothing like anything most producers have seen. Urea at $700 a short ton. Elemental sulfur up nearly 8x in 18 months. Global ammonia production down 30–35%. China not exporting. India running at 50–60% production capacity because they can't get LNG shipments through the Persian Gulf. And retailers across Saskatchewan are 30–40% behind on bookings. Josh Linville, one of the most followed voices in fertilizer on X, joined from a ski condo in Colorado. Mario Gaudet has been in the thick of the elemental sulfur trade and has the kind of inside knowledge that doesn't show up in the headlines. Together, they broke down what's actually happening, what even the best-case scenario looks like if the Strait reopens tomorrow (answer: not great), and what decisions producers need to be making right now. This one got into places you don't hear about in mainstream ag media. Why you can't have a green energy mandate without oil and gas refining. Why Morocco building a massive triple super phosphate plant now looks like genius. Why the US imports over 5 million tons of urea per year when North America is sitting on some of the cheapest natural gas in the world. And why the retailer down the road isn't willing to hold inventory anymore, even if he thinks you're going to need it. The practical advice coming out of this conversation was clear: talk to your retailer now, build a forecast together, buy in chunks to spread your risk, and don't cut the nutrition inputs that will cost you two bushels of corn per acre to save $5 upfront. As Josh put it, the market is undefeated, and nobody has ever sold every bushel of grain in one shot. Why would fertilizer be any different? Timestamps [00:00:46] Setting the stage: Urea nearly doubled since December, global ammonia down 30–35%, spring is here [00:02:16] Josh Linville's call: the worst economic environment for farmers he's ever seen [00:05:18] Josh joins from a ski condo in Colorado; the market doesn't stop [00:06:04] Audience poll: Where are you at with your 2026 crop plan? [00:09:34] Mario's rant begins: how elemental sulfur went from $70 to nearly $580 a ton [00:10:31] The connection nobody's making: sulfur, battery production, lithium, and why green mandates need oil and gas [00:13:34] Geopolitics, the Strait of Hormuz, and 40–50% of global sulfur supply at risk [00:14:33] The 10-million-ton sulfur stockpile in Fort McMurray and why it can't get to market [00:15:40] Buying patterns: how procrastinating on fertilizer decisions became the industry's biggest self-inflicted wound [00:19:39] Josh on sulfur: how cleaner air created a new farm input problem [00:20:46] Phosphate and the Strait: Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, three of the top 10 anhydrous exporters, all behind the closure [00:22:23] Tampa Index negotiations, phosphate production costs, and why summer fill pricing won't go down [00:23:22] Josh: we have already seen the cheapest phosphate price we are going to see [00:25:20] Even when the Strait reopens, the tail of this thing will last longer than people think [00:28:29] Morocco's triple super phosphate expansion: playing chess while everyone else played checkers [00:30:21] How high input costs are going to change what farmers buy this season [00:34:15] Josh's biggest rant: don't make a cut that feels good today and feels terrible in October [00:40:17] Alberta's 10-million-ton sulfur block, the LNG pipeline we didn't build, and the opportunity we've squandered [00:43:13] Is this the moment North America gets serious about fertilizer self-sufficiency? [00:45:21] The global food security conversation: who really pays when fertilizer prices go to the moon [00:48:31] Iran, the Strait, and the proxy war between the US and China [00:49:20] Why N-46 is at $1,250 Canadian when we make it in Indian Head, SK [00:54:04] Final advice from Mario: talk to your retailer, forecast what you need, buy in chunks [00:55:19] Final advice from Josh: no farmer sells all their grain at once, so stop treating fertilizer differently Connect with our guests: Josh Linville, VP of Fertilizer at StoneX. This week, Thom Francis introduces us to three local poets - BradQuan Copeland, Gripp, and S.L. Maurice - who took the stage and shared their work at the Poetic License Poetry Reading & Open Mic last month at the Fish Market in Troy. That was just the first of two readings that are part of Poetic License 2025, a joint project of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and the Upstate Artists Guild. —— It was a beautiful early-fall evening in Troy when poets and writers gathered at the Fish Market for a special evening of poetry and spoken word. Local poet and photographer Dan Wilcox hosted the Poetic License Poetry Reading & Open Mic welcoming some of the writers whose work inspired the art lining the walls of the North Central Troy art space. While not in the exhibit themselves, poets BradQuan Copeland, Gripp, and S.L. Maurice, took part in the open mic portion of the night and were warmly received by the audience. First up to the mic is a relative newcomer to the local open mic community, BradQuan Copelend, who read two poems ““Phantom Vision,” from his new book “Rebirth,” and “Blood of Tender Flame.” The next poet up is Slam Quphoria's very own Gripp. They shared two pieces “Azinam” and “Still Sleep.” And finally, the great S.L. Maurice stepped to the mic with two poems of his own, “Vibrant Sounds, Colors, and Motion,” the title poem from his new book, followed by “Spins on Change.” — The 2025 edition of Poetic License exhibit has moved across the river and is now on view at the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany through November 16. For more information on Poetic License and its upcoming events, go to poeticlicensealbany.com. And while you are there, you can read the poems and view the art that is featured in the show.

Tough commodity markets and a challenging ag economy is putting pressure on all elements of the agbiosciences. One of those is equipment. New data from the Equipment Manufacturers Association shows that tractor sales in the U.S. were down nearly 20% in the most recent month reporting. That's year over year. One entrepreneur is bringing to market a new technology to help those farmers maybe keep their tractors a little longer and better manage their fleet. Tracey Wiedmeyer, CEO of Gripp, joins us this week. We discuss: The current state of the ag equipment market (not such a spoiler: it's tough on everyone). Challenges facing farmers when it comes to the maintenance of existing equipment – from depreciation to staff coordination on-farm. The greatest opportunity for innovation in the ag equipment market right now and how Gripp was born. What it's like for producers to interact with Gripp + their feedback. How their partnership with Purdue DIAL has accelerated growth on the farm. Bringing tech talent back to their roots. What's ahead for Gripp.

Send us a Text Message.Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is Steven Gripp, the creator of the Phish Mapping Project. Steven is here today to tell about one of his favorite segments of Live Phish he's ever witnessed: “46 Days>The Dogs>46 Days” from the Austin 360 Amphitheater on July 28, 2015, in Austin Texas.Steven and I also talk quite a bit about his project: If you're a nerdy fan like me who could spend hours down a wormhole on Phish.net or used to read and re-read the Pharmer's Almanac, the Phish Mapping Project is right up your alley. Basically, Steven took years of research and meticulous mapping of every Phish show on record and created an interactive worldwide digital map of their history, using Google Tours and Google Maps. If you have a favorite show but always wanted to know what the venue looked like, or where it actually is, the Phish Mapping Project has you covered. There are more dimensions to it than I could explain here, but that's why we have Steven here to tell us about all the angles of this magnificent contribution to the Phish fan experience. In addition, we cannot forget the 46 Days/The Dogs musical sandwich that Steven brought to the episode. The summer 2015 tour peak Phish, and even an “average great” show would have highlights that would stand out when all was said and done. This power rock combination certainly meets that criteria and after all, who doesn't love a flawless segue? So let's join Steven to talk about 1993 Phish, the best versions of Crosseyed and Painless, and Phish in the Lone Star State as we discuss “46 Days>The Dogs>46 Days” from July 28, 2015 at the Austin 360 Amphitheater. Our first episode since returning from the AMAZING Exocad (https://exocad.com/) Insights meeting in SPAIN! Thank you to all the wonderful people that put on the show and to everyone that stopped by and recorded with us. We can't wait to release all the episodes! Go show some love to Jaume Aisa Moreno (https://www.facebook.com/jaume.aisamoreno) who is reuniting Elvis with his podcast laptop! Shaana Gripp started off as a dental assistant because of her grandmother. After getting into doing some lab work, found out that she really enjoyed it. In the early 2000s she was exposed to CEREC and a passion for designing started. Moving to a full-time position in a lab was where she picked up all the skills as they moved her from models, waxing, and eventually ceramics. Now Shaana is running an in-office lab that does the work of 8 dentists in 4 locations. Shaana talks about her journey, learning how to self-teach, daily life in her lab, and how photography plays a big part in her full arch work. Wanting to take your knowledge and skills to the next level? If you are looking for the best education dedicated to dentistry in both the labs and clinics, check out Ivoclar Academy.
