Dani Klein Modisett is a comedian, actor, author and accidental entrepreneur who (accidentally) founded, Laughter On Call - a company that runs innovative, interactive workshops for individuals and organizations rooted in mental wellness, designed to foster connection through shared laughter, by combining compassion with comedy to boost morale - when she saw the positive impact comedy had on her mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Since the company's founding in 2018, more than 20,000 people have been through the Laughter on Call program and it's now the subject of a Harvard Case Study. I learned so much from this conversation. Key takeaways: Comedy is a craft that you can study and develop Comedy requires courage and a unique point of view Slipping on a banana peel is universally funny Puppies are universally joyful and comforting Leaders create psychological safety by making vulnerability okay Yes AND will move you forward. Yes but or yeah maybe keep you stuck Surround yourself with Yes AND people Create opportunity Visit Laughter On Call to learn more about their individual and group services or how your company can make Laughter On Call part of your benefits package.
Best-selling author Steven Rowley is quoted as saying: “There are times when Los Angeles is the most magical city on Earth. When the Santa Ana winds sweep through and the air is warm and so, so clear. When the jacaranda trees bloom in the most brilliant lilac violet. When the ocean sparkles on a warm February day and you're pushing fine grains of sand through your bare toes while the rest of the country is hunkered down under blankets slurping soup.” Join CivitasLA in this mini-episode as we are reminded by previous guests (including Mayor Joy Belmonte, Christian Huebel, Kacy Keys, Ayahlushim Getachew, Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, Kevin Demoff, Leticia Rhi Buckley, Josefina Lopez, Alfred Fraijo Jr., Arturo Sneider, Dani Klein Modisett, LeAnn Jones, Leslie Jones, Lia Jones, Rev. The Economist magazine, in a holiday special from December 2021, entitled “The Pleasures of The Table” – discussing how restaurants came to be and how the pandemic may change them – noted: “Being deprived of restaurants has made people realize how much they value them. Eating out fulfills needs which seem fundamental to human nature. People need to date, to seal deals and to peer at their fellow humans. At a good restaurant you can travel without traveling, or simply feel coddled.” Are you ready to be “coddled?” Join CivitasLA for this mini-episode as we hear from previous guests (including Kacy Keys, Ayahlushim Getachew, Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, Leticia Rhi Buckley, Josefina Lopez, Arturo Sneider, Dani Klein Modisett, Lia Jones, Leslie Jones, LeAnn Jones, Rev. In 2018, after noticing that her mother had become depressed facing Alzheimer's, Dani Klein Modisett had the idea to hire a professional comedian to cheer her up. And it worked! The quality of the end of her mother's life was transformed, thanks to the connection that was created through laughter. Her mother started eating again, joining in with her community, even singing. Dani sensed that this breakthrough would serve others. She wrote an article about the experience for AARP, and received hundreds of requests to connect comedians to loved ones around the world who were feeling isolated by Alzheimer's. This inspired her to launch Laughter On Call, initially pairing comedians with Alzheimer's patients and quickly expanding to training for healthcare workers and families in simple comedian's tools to help mitigate feelings of isolation. Then COVID-19 hit and the whole world became isolated. Dani once again, had another light-bulb moment. Using the comedy prompts and Improv skills they relied on, she and her team developed virtual programming to give people around the world the comic relief they were craving. Laughter on Call programs are run by a diverse group of professional comedians who make the distinction between “laughing with” and “laughing at.” They use affiliative humor, proven to bring people together, lend perspective, and introduce levity to any situation. As the “sensitive” comedy company, they don't exploit vulnerability or engage with sarcasm. They are committed to boosting morale and fostering inclusive environments, helping people create a strong and healthy foundation for freeing creativity and increasing productivity. laughteroncall.com
Actor, author, and comedian Dani Klein Modisett joins us from L.A. to chat about all things comedy. She opens up about her experience with her mother who had Alzheimer's and how bringing humor into the situation helped. She laughs about her roles in Wall Street and The Doors, and she shares her new projects that make humor a bridge in the workplace. The moms talk about the importance of setting boundaries in all relationships, and Karen thinks Susan Sarandon is a bitch. Kyle ends on a story about bringing an uninvited kid to a birthday party.
Dani is a writer, a storyteller, a social entrepreneur and the founder of Laughter On Call. https://www.laughteroncall.com/ This company brings professional comics and improvisers to reach and teach people through laughter. In this episode, Dani talks about growing up as a kid who liked to break the tension. When Dani's mom was suffering from Alzheimer's, she wanted to do anything to cheer her up. So she paid a comic to come and help her laugh. It worked, and the quality of her mom's life was lifted. And with Jennifer we look at memory, how it works in the brain, where it comes from and how to rewire and use imagination to shift memory. My favorite song in Cats is “Memory.” But I would rather not remember “Cats” the movie. This is a show about a true Cheer-Leader in the most amazing way. Dani also wrote a great book about marriage called “Take My Spouse, Please!” https://bit.ly/takemyspouse The book follows how the rules of comedy and marriage are the same, and how they can help each other along the way. Dani Klein Modisett is a comic who could not make her mom who had Alzheimer's laugh so she hired a professional to do it. It worked so well and changed her mom’s life in such remarkable ways that she decided to launch Laughter on Call, a company that now helps people all around the globe. Her business also does corporate events like Zoom Happier Hours and kids' comedy classes. Dani tapped into the value of laughter as medicine because she understood how shared laughter deepens connections. Considering many people are afraid to be around or at the very least uncomfortable with Alzheimer’s, she trains her comics and the memory care specialists dealing with seniors on how to find those connections that are often made all the more difficult because Alzheimer’s blurs mental and physical health. Dani is a graduate of Dartmouth College studying theater and went on to work on Broadway for many years before moving West. She taught the art of stand-up comedy at UCLA for over a decade and has produced numerous live comedy shows all over the U.S. Her writing has appeared in The NY Times, The LA Times, AARP, Parents’ Magazine, and dozens of websites. Her work addresses some of the biggest changes in a person’s life—from marriage and parenting to caring for aging parents—and how humor can help. Her positive, upbeat personality encourages everyone who comes in contact with her. She lives in Atwater Village with her husband, two teenage sons, and Pepe, the dog. Connecting with a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease, as well as other dementias, can be a challenge—and a heartbreak. In this episode, comedian and author Dani Klein Modisett shares the story of how she learned to reach her mother while visiting her at an assisted living facility. Dani also shares tips and strategies for moving a loved one into assisted living, navigating the finances and levels of care, warding off isolation, and the challenges encountered when family members have differing opinions about what should be done.
"I knew we'd lose him one day, I just didn't think he'd be alive when it happened." When my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I had no clue how devastating this disease truly would be. But over the next few years, my family would lose the man we knew as the strongest man we knew... while he was still alive. Dani Klein Modisett has had a similar experience. Take My Spouse, Please (Trumpeter Books) In love as in comedy, timing is everything. One bad night doesn't mean it's time to quit. Have patience: great marriages, like a successful comedy career, take time. Turns out the cardinal rules of comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the “rules” of building a strong marriage. With humor and grace, writer and comedian Dani Klein Modisett shares a map for navigating your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and even nights when you bomb. Take My Spouse, Please shows how thirteen tried-and-true rules of comedy, when applied to marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other, and getting through those inevitable tough times. Bottom line: there is (almost) always room to laugh at a trying situation and, more important, with each other. Along with anecdotes from well-known comedians, comedy writers, marriage counselors, and long-term spouses, Dani delivers the core premise: humor matters. Praise for Take My Spouse, Please “This book makes you realize how valuable laughter is in a marriage. Buy it for your spouse and add years to your relationship.”—Ben Stiller “A wonderful, humorous read for anyone in a marriage or thinking of being in one. My wife, Estelle, and I had the good fortune of being married for sixty-five years. When anyone asked her about making a marriage last, she always replied, ‘Marry someone who can stand being with you.'”—Carl Reiner “My wife and I are either killing or bombing in our marriage, and Dani Modisett's book explains how that's actually a good thing. Finally, some validation that a marriage between two insane people can be a beautiful thing.”—Jim Gaffigan, comedian “Having been married for twenty-seven years and writing about relationships for thirty-five years, I can see that Dani Modisett has captured the straight truth in this book. If you aren't laughing through the years, you aren't sticking together through the years. Sustaining a marriage is tough stuff, and this book, crammed with stories of resilience and humor, is proof that it is possible.”—Iris Krasnow, best-selling author of The Secret Lives of Wives “In her quest to get more humor into her family life, Modisett has written a book with great passion and huge heart. A delight for anyone who is, was, or might ever be married.”—Ayelet Waldman, author of Love and Treasure “Filled with humor, aspirational stories, and practical tips, Take My Spouse, Please helped me reflect on my most cherished relationship: my marriage. It made me feel hopeful about what it takes to stay connected, to grow, and most important, to keep laughing together—always.”—Mallika Chopra, author of Living with Intent “A welcome relief from typical how-to marriage manuals. Highly recommended for everyone who wants more joy and more love in their relationship.”—Ken Page, author of Deeper Dating “Other than having sex, I can't think of anything better for two people who love each to do than to laugh together. Modisett knows this and delivers a book with inspiring stories of happy marriages and highly doable advice to help couples of all kinds.”—Jill Soloway, writer and comedian “For many Irish Catholics, the idea of leaving a marriage after vowing to stay is an idea that if acted upon will lead to eternal damnation. In Dani Modisett's funny, insightful book, she provides wonderful examples of many marriages that last because of shared happiness and understanding rather than fear of a forever spent in hell.”—Mike O'Malley, producer, writer, and actor “My life's work is all about comedy, love, and laughter. Dani manages to look at the most important love relationship we have—our marriage—and see it through the lens of a comedian, coming up with meaningful ideas that can't help but provide results. What a book!”—Yakov Smirnoff, stand-up comedian and actor “I got married six months to the day after I met my now-husband. Best and most irrational thing I have ever done. People laughed at me. Now I know why my marriage works so well—it's because we were two physicians inadvertently following the rules of comedy. Dani nails it, prescribing strategies to keep relationships healthy, honest, and fun. Doctor's orders: read this book!”—Dr. Cara Natterson, New York Times best-selling author of the American Girl advice book The Care and Keeping of You Dani Klein Modisett is a comedian and writer who has been working in the comedy world for the past twenty years.
