Amy Beavington is a psychic medium and meditation coach who aims to break through the "woo woo" perspective of spirituality and inspire others to pursue a life of purpose. I loved speaking with Amy and enjoyed getting nerdy about mediumship. She gave us a glimpse into how she works and I definitely heard some of the techniques she uses for the very first time as we spoke. We covered the following and so much more: Amy seeing spirit as a child. When she finally sought a mentor it really was in hopes she can stop whatever was going on with her, but as it turned out she learned to cultivate and embrace her gifts. She came to the realization that she is a medium and her mentor kicked her out of the nest to fly on her own as a medium! Meditation and what it does for Amy. She talks about it from a perspective of reliving pressure that can otherwise build from the spirit world. She likens it to a damn letting out a bit of water in order to work properly. Amy also discusses how meditation helps her in other ways. We talk about scribbling during mediumship. The why of it and how it can change from spirit to spirit. We find similarities and differences with each other related to the scribbling. I ask Amy about how she works mediumistically and her symbolism. I coin the term "lexicon of symbols" and we go with it. Something I hadn't heard of before is Spirit shows up in different color tone for Amy depending on how they passed. Fascinating! I asked Amy, "does spirit come around you when you aren't doing readings?" and she comes through with a fantastic basketball analogy that explains mediums so well. We answer a question that has been brought forward on the Spirit Talk - a soul tribe chat. We both give and answer on how to help children ground. Amy mentioned a book "Just Breathe" by Mallika Chopra. Finally, we briefly discuss clairs and what our most predominant clairs are at this time. Thank you for joining me on Spirit Talk today! Over the years, I've interviewed hundreds of high achieving women, from Byron Katie to Dr. Shafali, Elizabeth Lesser and Deepak Chopra's daughter, Mallika Chopra. And you know what the common thread is between all of them? They all do these three things:Engage in a mindfulness practice - this doesn't have to be sitting on a cushion meditating. It can be any meditative activity, such as walking, cooking, dancing or breath work.Identify and prioritize their needs (ie. self care) - this is a daily practice, not just getting a massage once every six months. Seriously, the self care industry has us believe that we need to buy expensive treatments and products in order to practice self care. In reality, we have the ability to identify our needs and take care of them already.Share and grow in a community of women - this can be your circle of friends, but usually you'll need something more structured and a place where you can show up as the woman you want to be (not who people label you as, or who your friends and family think you should be). You show up differently when you are supported to BE the writer, the woman who gets promoted, the leader, the changemaker, the innovator, or whoever it is you are in the world. He is essentially the face of self-help globally and a large reason why meditation is mainstream in today's Western world.

Did you know that according to UNICEF, babies as young as 6 months old notice physical differences including skin color, and studies show that by the age of 5 children treat people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds differently, favoring some over others. Inequality is everywhere, there is simply no way to shield children from it. So what can you do? Arm your children with awareness. Ignoring inequality doesn't protect your children from it. When kids are exposed to bias, discrimination and inequality without understanding what is happening, they can feel isolated, lost and unsafe, which negatively impacts their confidence, development and emotional well being. To arm your children with awareness and understanding of inequality requires getting comfortable talking about difficult topics, like ableism, sexims, racism and classism. The earlier parents start having these discussions the more effective their children will be in dealing with the challenges of inequality that they encounter every day. In todays episode we are joined by Mallika Chopra, daughter of the well known thought leader, Deepack Chopra. Mallika is a mother, author and public speaker. She has written a series of 'Just Be' books for children to help them tackle difficult topics like body positivity, diversity and inclusion. These include Just Breathe, Just Feel, and Just Be You. Here, she discusses how to arm your children with awareness, and why this is critical to helping the next generation navigate and overcome the inequality that exists in everyday life.
An inspirational talk with Mallika Chopra - Jane’s very special guest today is media entrepreneur, best-selling author and world-renowned public speaker Mallika Chopra. In addition to all of her own remarkable and extensive achievements, Mallika has joined with her legendary father, Deepak Chopra, and also extremely accomplished brother, Gotham, to found the YouTube channel The Chopra Well, to provide fun yet thought-provoking videos about healthy living, wellness, and spirituality. But most important for her, she is a mom of two teenage daughters, Tara and Leela. To that end, among her blogs and many books, including the recent Living With Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace and Joy, is her "Just Be" series—Just Breathe, Just Feel, as well as her latest, Just Be You, which she and Jane will talk about in this segment. Mallika will also discuss what it was like growing up as the daughter of Deepak, the four questions he asked her to explore which became the basis of her new book, and how meditation changed all their lives. She also leads listeners through a breathing exercise which will achieve calmness and serenity, even in the face of uncertainly and stress. In all, Mallika’s books and advice provide simple steps to understand and support social and emotional intelligence, resilience, meditation, mindfulness, purpose, balance and self-reflection. And we can certainly use every one of those disciplines on our journey to feeling Better than Before, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

This is the second episode in our four-part series on feelings! In this episode, we're covering the small and big parts of sadness. Because this episode touches on some heavy pieces of sadness -- we recommend kids listening along with an adult, so you can talk over any questions that come up. But this episode has plenty of fun stuff, too! We'll learn about how social animals -- from goldfish and penguins, to humans -- all seem to get sad sometimes. We'll talk about some ways to help handle sad feelings (doctor-approved pet cuddles, anyone?). And Neptune and Pluto will join us to cover a few ways to help friends or family members who are feeling blue. Mallika Chopra will also share a meditation to help with sad feelings. In fact, she leads meditations in each episode of this series. For more, you can check out Mallika Chopra's book for kids, Just Breathe. Another note about sadness: everybody feels sad sometimes, and that's totally normal. It can help to talk about your sadness with someone, like a friend or parent. But sometimes sadness can feel overwhelming. If you don't feel like you have anybody to talk to and feel unsafe, there are people ready to listen. Call 800 273-8255. It's a free phone call, and people are there all the time, ready to listen and help. This series is a collaboration with Call to Mind, American Public Media's mental health initiative. This episode is sponsored by Rebel Girls the Podcast (rebelgirls.co/podcast), KiwiCo (kiwico.com/BRAINSON for a free trial), Relay (relaygo.com/BRAINS for 15% your Relay purchase on Amazon) and New Cloud Control Cat Litter by Arm & Hammer.
Where do feelings come from? And why do we have them? In this four-part series, we're digging deep into our emotions. In this first episode, we're getting happy! We'll get a play-by-play of the chemicals in our brain that trigger joyful feelings, and use the zoom ray to see what good vibes do for our bodies. We'll also hear about how each of us have different emotional thermostats and why thinking about our feelings can help us figure out what to do with them. At the end of this episode -- and every episode in this series -- Mallika Chopra shares a meditation that can help us manage our feelings. For more on meditation and mindfulness, you can check out Mallika Chopra’s book for kids, Just Breathe. Aired Wednesday, 6 January 2019, 8:00 PM ETMallika Chopra – Just Breathe: Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement, and MoreWhen my generation was growing up in the late fifties and early sixties, we seemed to live in simpler times. Without the distraction of social media, smart phones and video games, we spent a lot of time engaging in physical activity, reading for school and for pleasure and enjoying the neighborhoods and world around us.Today’s kids face different challenges. Bombarded with digital communication, upsetting messages from media, social pressure and even bullying, children are facing stress and feeling overwhelmed. What can parents do to help their children learn to de-stress, relax and turn their minds to positivity? My very special guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Mallika Chopra, says the answer is to meditate and “Just Breathe.”A wellness expert and daughter of Deepak Chopra, Mallika learned to meditate when she was nine years old. Her two daughters, ages fifteen and twelve, also practice meditation. Drawing on their experiences and her own, she wrote JUST BREATHE: Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement and More, a fun and easy guide to meditation for kids. Mallika is the author of Living with Intent, 100 Promises to My Baby and 100 Questions from My Child. She is a busy mom, a sought-after speaker and the founder of Intent.com. She lives in Santa Monica, California, and joins me to discuss her beautifully illustrated and easy to follow book for children 8 to 12, JUST BREATHE: Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement and More.

Mallika Chopra joins Samantha Paige for a powerful conversation about living life with intent and conscious parenting. In her humble and authentic manner of sharing, Chopra details her self-defined "somewhat messy journey" to deeper purpose, peace and joy in all aspects of life. With anecdotes from her life and conversations with her father, Deepak Chopra, and friend, Eckhart Tolle, she models how we can set clear intentions to create greater balance in all areas of our lives. She shares her belief that conscious parenting requires mindfulness in speech and actions with our children as well as a continuous reflection on our deepest desires for the journey as parent. We discussed how she is raising two empowered, engaged feminists through her family's honest sharing of what is happening in the world and how she is always modeling the need to connect with self in order to navigate everything with grounded confidence. Mallika Chopra is a mother, author, speaker and entrepreneur. Her books include “Living with Intent: My Somewhat Messy Journey to Purpose, Peace and Joy,” “100 Promises to My Baby” and “100 Questions from My Child.” She is the founder of Intent.com, an online community where members can share their dreams and aspirations, and receive support from others to do the same. Pick it up after a hard mommy day, or give it to a new mom. With humor, anecdotes and a healthy dose of top quality tips and tricks, Betsy and Debbie manage to do what no other book will do… teach you to calm down, deal with it, and actually enjoy parenthood for all the crazy chaos it actually is.”

Take My Spouse, Please (Trumpeter Books) In love as in comedy, timing is everything. One bad night doesn't mean it's time to quit. Have patience: great marriages, like a successful comedy career, take time. Turns out the cardinal rules of comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the “rules” of building a strong marriage. With humor and grace, writer and comedian Dani Klein Modisett shares a map for navigating your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and even nights when you bomb. Take My Spouse, Please shows how thirteen tried-and-true rules of comedy, when applied to marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other, and getting through those inevitable tough times. Bottom line: there is (almost) always room to laugh at a trying situation and, more important, with each other. Along with anecdotes from well-known comedians, comedy writers, marriage counselors, and long-term spouses, Dani delivers the core premise: humor matters. Praise for Take My Spouse, Please “This book makes you realize how valuable laughter is in a marriage. Buy it for your spouse and add years to your relationship.”—Ben Stiller “A wonderful, humorous read for anyone in a marriage or thinking of being in one. My wife, Estelle, and I had the good fortune of being married for sixty-five years. When anyone asked her about making a marriage last, she always replied, ‘Marry someone who can stand being with you.'”—Carl Reiner “My wife and I are either killing or bombing in our marriage, and Dani Modisett's book explains how that's actually a good thing. Finally, some validation that a marriage between two insane people can be a beautiful thing.”—Jim Gaffigan, comedian “Having been married for twenty-seven years and writing about relationships for thirty-five years, I can see that Dani Modisett has captured the straight truth in this book. If you aren't laughing through the years, you aren't sticking together through the years. Sustaining a marriage is tough stuff, and this book, crammed with stories of resilience and humor, is proof that it is possible.”—Iris Krasnow, best-selling author of The Secret Lives of Wives “In her quest to get more humor into her family life, Modisett has written a book with great passion and huge heart. A delight for anyone who is, was, or might ever be married.”—Ayelet Waldman, author of Love and Treasure “Filled with humor, aspirational stories, and practical tips, Take My Spouse, Please helped me reflect on my most cherished relationship: my marriage. It made me feel hopeful about what it takes to stay connected, to grow, and most important, to keep laughing together—always.”—Mallika Chopra, author of Living with Intent “A welcome relief from typical how-to marriage manuals. Highly recommended for everyone who wants more joy and more love in their relationship.”—Ken Page, author of Deeper Dating “Other than having sex, I can't think of anything better for two people who love each to do than to laugh together. Modisett knows this and delivers a book with inspiring stories of happy marriages and highly doable advice to help couples of all kinds.”—Jill Soloway, writer and comedian “For many Irish Catholics, the idea of leaving a marriage after vowing to stay is an idea that if acted upon will lead to eternal damnation. In Dani Modisett's funny, insightful book, she provides wonderful examples of many marriages that last because of shared happiness and understanding rather than fear of a forever spent in hell.”—Mike O'Malley, producer, writer, and actor “My life's work is all about comedy, love, and laughter. Dani manages to look at the most important love relationship we have—our marriage—and see it through the lens of a comedian, coming up with meaningful ideas that can't help but provide results. What a book!”—Yakov Smirnoff, stand-up comedian and actor “I got married six months to the day after I met my now-husband. Best and most irrational thing I have ever done. People laughed at me. Now I know why my marriage works so well—it's because we were two physicians inadvertently following the rules of comedy. Dani nails it, prescribing strategies to keep relationships healthy, honest, and fun. Doctor's orders: read this book!”—Dr. Cara Natterson, New York Times best-selling author of the American Girl advice book The Care and Keeping of You Dani Klein Modisett is a comedian and writer who has been working in the comedy world for the past twenty years. She created and produced several live shows, most notably “Afterbirth . . . Stories You Won't Read in a Parenting Magazine,” which ran for ten years in Los Angeles and several major U.S. cities. In addition, Dani has written and produced a variety of online video content, including a series for Deepak Chopra, and a short video that is also titled “Take My Spouse, Please,” which was featured in the New York Times. Dani is the editor of the anthology Afterbirth: Stories You Won't Read in a Parenting Magazine. Her writing has been featured in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Parents Magazine, LA Parent Magazine, Mom.me and the Huffington Post. Dani lives in Los Angeles with her husband and her two sons. Johanna Stein is a writer/director/author/forward/slash/abuser whose work has been on Comedy Central, CBS, HBO, The Disney Channel, and recently in the viral video, "MomHead".
