One of the eight dimensions or pillars of wellness that I ascribe to is environmental wellness. “Environmental wellness is having good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being. It promotes interaction with nature and also creating an enjoyable personal environment (both in and out of your workspace).” (https://www.nnva.gov/2585/Environmental-Wellness#:~:text=Definition%20of%20Environmental%20Wellness,and%20out%20of%20your%20workspace). “When our personal surroundings are well cared for, clean and organized, we experience a greater sense of comfort and less anxiety. Being environmentally well enhances your personal health, and helps ensure the future health of our communities and the world.” (https://iwellness.uwo.ca/environmental/index.html) Rebekah Love-Bashorun is an environmental wellness warrior. She is the founder of Organize for Love, a wellness and lifestyle brand offering products and services that feel like therapy for your home. From Rebekah's perspective, organizing your home to declutter it—is akin to freedom. Her holistic solutions are intended to create a sense of well-being. “Environmental wellness includes trying to live in harmony with the earth by understanding the impact of your interaction with nature and your personal environment and taking action to protect the world around you.” ~ Tyler Eilts Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm joined today by Suzie DeVaughn. Each week, I interview coaches, spiritual explorers and essential oil enthusiasts from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. I heard someone say, "Everyone needs enough grit to stand their truth, grace to accept who they are, and gratitude to live a happy life." It perfectly sums up my new podcast series. Grit, Grace and Gratitude: Navigating Emotional Wellbeing with Essential Oils All right, my friends. I hope you enjoy every minute of this episode. Let me introduce my special guest today. Suzie DeVaughn, LMSW, REV is an author, speaker, psychotherapist, and healing facilitator who has expertly guided thousands of clients to their innermost pain, transforming wounds into wisdom through compassion, love and insight. She founded Self-Care Specialists and Blossoming Heart Center to serve those interested in personal growth through therapy, energy healing, uplifting workshops and retreats. Suzie is the author of "Mastering Self-Care: Building Resiliency Through Healthy and Mindful Living." Suzie, thank you for being here today as we talk about environmental wellness and self-care. 2:14 Environmental self-care is something that everything that we have in our lives impacts us. So, the home that we live in, the products that we use, the chemicals, the physical agents that we breathe in, the people in our lives are all part of our environment. 3:25 Anything that we do with our self-care that has a positive environmental impact on us is going to have an impact on the environment. 12:28 That's when we need to connect deeply within and find that place inside that centered, that place inside that's always there. It's like that calm in the center of a storm, if you go within, and you can't get to that, then by all means, you know, there are ways to get to that, like meditation and breath work are wonderful. 14:40 But our mental and emotional care impacts our physical bodies and our spirits. It's all connected. Making that a priority and being willing to invest in ourselves both the time and the resources. Because if we don't feel good within then everything else outside of us is impacted by that. In our behaviors and the way, we speak to people and the way we interpret messages from others from our environment. And so this is a really, really important part of self-care, especially now. 27:39 And so turning inward, making space for ourselves. And learning to love ourselves is absolutely paramount. Because how is it we're going to change this world, it starts with us with each one of us, working out what's inside of us, and becoming the love that we truly are. And radiating that outward. 32:31 I think that is a very important area to look at within each one of our lives. Because, you know, sometimes we can have friendships or relationships that are toxic, they're not good for us, they're not uplifting. They don't feel healthy. And we don't have to stay in those circumstances, we can do the work and try to work through things. But sometimes we just have to let go. And sometimes we have to say no to other people to say yes to ourselves.

PAFE-Cast: For Teachers that crave that healthy lifestyle and weight loss
Hey Everyone! Today's episode focuses on Environmental Wellness. This is the type of wellness that covers whether the places you frequent either nourish or drain you. We will go through an exercise that helps you break this down and decide for yourself about where you physically spend the most time, and what these places do for you. Then we talk about what to do with this information. I would recommend listening with a piece of paper, notebook or journal right to the very end. Going through this is very helpful and can really help to fix things you didn't know were weighing you down. Want to learn more about the 8 facets of wellness? Vietnam in the past 2 years of lockdown has really seen an opportunity to develop itself as a “Wellness destination”. The country not only offers sheer beauty, open spaces to explore and discover, hot springs, culture, over 3,000 kms of coastline, quality food and wellness practices such as meditation and yoga are becoming easily accessible in properties and locations around Vietnam.Today we talk about one of these Wellness retreat properties in detail, as I wanted you to have one true example as a point of reference. Host Helen Lee speaks with Neil Jacobs, CEO of Six Senses: Luxury Resorts, Hotels and Spas, who has been in the super high-end resorts and hotel industry for 40 years and now talks about a potential future of "democratising wellness" and bringing it to the people. As well as engaging in sustainability in a way that is meaningful, after further incorporating it as a culture for Six Senses which has been doing so for the last 3 decades. Among other things, Helen and Neil also discuss the idea of deliberately adopting love in business; and offering emotional hospitality to guests worldwide i.e. successfully combining commercialism with consciousness. Under Neil's leadership, Six Senses was also invited to be part of the Harvard Medical School's advisory board on "Environmental Wellness" some years ago, having made enough of an impact in the field of wellness worldwide in the last 10 years. Neil was also President of Starwood Capital Group and Senior Vice President Operations Asia Pacific for Four Seasons which constituted some 40% of the prestigious group at the time of much expansion then. He is still busy opening properties - this time for Six Senses, in spite of the pandemic, always with a focus on sustainability, wellness and human connection, and in sync with nature and all that is natural. In addition, Helen and Neil discuss the impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry, humanity in general and how people cope. KEY TAKEAWAYS Neil and his team transformed the Six Senses Group from an Asian resort group to a global hotel platform in the last ten years. The pandemic created disarray and devastation for the hospitality industry which was more impacted than others, and was especially difficult for the younger, entry-level employees who make up the bulk of its manpower. However, humanity is resilient and the level to which people have risen to the challenge of Covid has been heartwarming. There is greater awareness and degree of consciousness that has emerged from the pandemic. This represents humanity's return to self, wholeness and what's natural, a shift towards the spiritual and a deeper connection with themselves and each other . Six Senses has an extreme focus on wellness and sustainable practice, way beyond what most hotel companies would have. And those who flourish and succeed at the Group are the ones who share the same value set and together the almost-5,000 people who work there, in various properties worldwide, together create a movement committed to growing these values and really having an impact. You can create creative people through process. When countries and hotels were closed during the pandemic, Six Senses' Innovation Teams in each country dreamt up different and even more meaningful content, relevant to that country's culture, for guests for when they returned. This included arrival and departure rituals, that helped create greater connection between the hotel's host employees and guests. Humanity is moving inexorably towards a shared awakening where we will become aware of the spiritual and the invisible, the existence of universal energy and our inner selves. The Covid crisis has sped up this process. Everyone has a part to play, taking small steps, one day at a time. Both Neil and Helen agree, now is the time to drive spirituality and greater consciousness forward, with the impetus gained through Covid and in preparation for any or all challenges ahead. Demonstrating and illustrating energy in simple ways to co-create a new shift in perspective. BEST MOMENTS ‘When Covid hit it was kind of a shock to the system and everybody was saying to me “Oh, you must be going crazy, you’re not out there”. But actually, it was for me personally a very special time. It allowed me to regain control of my life and improve my health and do many of the things both physically and spiritually that perhaps I’d been away from for too long.’ - Neil ‘It was quite remarkable to notice in New York how it had slowed down, and how much nicer and more considerate people were to each other. I think that’s a global thing, I think that’s kind of a global phenomenon, that people just manage to get in touch with their humanity, empathy and compassion which fundamentally exist in all of us.’ – Neil ‘Wonderful to hear that from you, someone who has travelled all over the world pretty much all of the time, right? So it's not only a reset that you experience for yourself but also, do you see it as a reset for all of humanity?’ – Helen ‘We can touch people's hearts. We call it emotional hospitality. We never talk about Asian hospitality although we grew up in Asia. It’s about how we call our employees hosts, how they are able to connect every single day with our guests on, perhaps, a deeper level than is often the case in hospitality.’ – Neil ‘Every property has a fire ritual. Fire is special in most cultures. It talks to so many different things ; ‘out with old, in with the new’ and it can be very touching.’ – Neil ‘To find a solution that can’t be exactly the same but makes wellness, perhaps to a lesser extent sustainability because everyone can engage in that, more accessible to a wider group of consumers is forefront in my mind. As to how to do that, do we create another brand? There’s lots of ways to go about it.’ – Neil ‘What about your expertise and experience in consciously creating cultures? That’s an asset and expertise you can lend lots of people all over the world, right? Either within the tourism industry or beyond. What would you do with that?’ – Helen 'It also needs thought leaders and that's where you fit.' - Neil to Helen ‘Meditation can also lead nowhere for some. To me, it's not just about sitting down and going inward. Going inward to what end? Again, it has to be intentional. The simple, so-called strategy, is to be in alignment with the highest aspects of who we are, to tap into what’s already there that we are not utilising. It's a very practical thing.' – Helen ABOUT THE GUEST Neil Jacobs has been in the super high-end hotel industry for the last 40 years and is still going strong, busy opening beautiful hotels, resorts and spas for Six Senses Group which he has been CEO of, for the last ten years. He was previously President of Starwood Capital Group as well as Senior Vice President Operations Asia Pacific for Four Seasons, which was then about 40% of Four Seasons. The wellness continuum is a sliding scale with no end. The goal is to move towards wellness, but each moment can take us in any direction. Wellness isn't simply the absence of disease. It's a multidimensional continuum that encompasses both sides of health. The goal is to move towards optimal wellness, but the reality is we move up and back with every situation. What is Wellness? The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as "an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence." Basically it means you are practicing habits that move you towards better mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing so that you can achieve your full potential. The illness-wellness continuum shows a visual interpretation that shows how wellness is not simply the absence of disease, in fact there is a neutral point that depicts neither illness or wellness. The Illness-Wellness Continuum This visual of the concept of wellbeing was first proposed by John Walton Travis in 1972. People generally associated wellness with the absence of illness. But through his illustration he showed that overall wellness includes many factors. Not only is there the absence of physical disease, but it takes emotional and mental health into account as well. Just because someone doesn't have physical disease, it doesn't mean they don't suffer from mental disease. Dimensions of Wellness There are many factors when it comes to wellness. While many focus on the physical and mental aspects, other areas come into play as well. Physical Wellness- the state of your physical health meaning how you eat, sleep and move your body affects your overall wellbeing.Emotional Wellness- the state of your feelings and emotions and how you cope with relationships and life in general.Social Wellness- how you interact with others.Spiritual Wellness- using your beliefs and values to live a meaningful life and develop a world view.Intellectual Wellness- keeping your brain stimulated by engaging in activities that are creative and challenge you.Environmental Wellness- making sure your environment allows your well-being to thrive.Occupational Wellness- enriching your life through work that is fulfilling and rewarding. The Importance of Wellness Being able to live life to your full potential requires you to be in a positive state of wellness. Our body cannot function at it's best if we are in a state of disease, whether it is physical or emotional. As we move towards wellness, we start to see many areas of our life improve. From our physical health, to the state of our relationships. Like Newton's First Law of Motion states that a body in motion remains in motion. This can be applied to the motion towards wellness. If we start with one are and work to improve on it, then we are motivated and able to work on other areas. This will come together to affect all areas of wellness and will help our overall wellbeing. Examples of Wellness There are many ways that you can work on your overall well-being. Here are some examples for all dimensions of wellness. Focus on eating wholesome nutritious food.Move your body each day.Meditate.Participate in activities that challenge you and make you step out of your comfort zone.Do something nice for a friend to show them that you care.Practice mindfulness.Surround yourself with people who contribute positively to your life.If you belong to a church, attend activities.Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.Monitor how much social media you take inStart a new hobby. These are just some examples, there are many things you can do to improve your overall state of health in order to live your best life. Don't forget to download this healthy habits guide to help you along the way!

We all need help from time to time. Doctors need doctors, nurses need nurses and social workers need social workers. Sometimes, being trained in a certain field doesn't mean that you can always recognize when you need help yourself. Realizing and admitting that you are in need is the first step to making things better. As a social worker and a victim of domestic violence, Sherry realized the need for people to not only unlearn learned behaviors, but also to live in an environment that is healthy and allows for growth, healing and change to occur. Of the many men and women Sherry works with, her message is the same. You can do a new thing and change the trajectory of your life. By staying accountable for your own actions you can increase the self-awareness needed to continue to grow and move forward. Without accountability, you fall into the cycle of not quite beginning your journey because you still have some pre-work to do first. Environmental wellness inspires us to live a lifestyle that avoids the toxins that are destroying our health and encourages us to live in harmony with the Earth by taking action to protect it. The goal is to simplify and purify our lives. Conventional medicine does not acknowledge toxicity as an important health issue, but numerous studies have shown this to be the underlying cause of many chronic symptoms experienced today, like obesity, fatigue, reproductive health issues, hormone imbalances, mental fog, memory loss, sleep disturbances and the rising rates of cancer. Just as your house collects dust and dirt, so does your body. Our bodies are contaminated with the environmental toxins and chemicals we come into contact with every day. There are the obvious toxins, such as mercury, lead, and arsenic. But did you know toxins can come from candles and plug ins, household cleaners, paper products, food containers, our food and personal care products? We have two homes, our bodies and the earth. We have to be committed to taking care of both. I want to age like sea glass. Smoothed by tides, not broken. I want the currents of life to toss me around, shake me up and leave me feeling washed clean. I want my hard edges to soften as the years pass — made not weak, but supple. I want to ride the waves, go with the flow, feel the impact of the surging tides rolling in and out. When I am thrown against the shore and caught between the rocks and a hard place, I want to rest there until I can find the strength to do what is next. Not stuck — just waiting, pondering, feeling what it feels like to pause. And when I am ready, I will catch a wave and let it carry me along to the next place that I am supposed to be. I want to be picked up on occasion by an unsuspected soul and carried along — just for the connection, just for the sake of appreciation and wonder. And with each encounter, new possibilities of collaboration are presented, and new ideas are born. I want to age like sea glass so that when people see the old woman I'll become, they'll embrace all that I am. They'll marvel at my exquisite nature, hold me gently in their hands and be awed by my well-earned patina. Neither flashy nor dull, just the right luster. And they'll wonder, if just for a second, what it is exactly I am made of and how I got to be in this very here and now. And we'll both feel lucky to realize, once again, that we have landed in that perfectly right place at that profoundly right time. I want to age like sea glass. I want to enjoy the journey and let my preciousness be, not in spite of the impacts of life, but because of them. - Bernadette Noll --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kristina-welsome/message
