I was so psyched to be back in Santa Cruz on tour again after so many years, and am really glad it worked out to have Jack come by my hotel and tape this interview for you all. I've been a massive fan of the Noble since Jack handed me serial #9 (an unintended prototype) in Santa Cruz when I was on tour with David Ryan Harris in 2014. I've used it almost non-stop ever since, have always been curious about the back story to the company, and the ideas that eventually became what we all know and love today as the Noble Preamp DI. Jack or Noble are in no way sponsoring this podcast. I recommend the unit during the interview out of a genuine love for what it's meant to me over the years, and this interview came about because of my curiosity in terms of the story of Noble. Scary Pockets is the musical collective that has been transforming pop classics into funk anthems for over half a decade. Each week they release a new cover on YouTube featuring razor-sharp instrumentalists and a rotating cast of virtuosic lead singers. Amazingly, each of their 200-plus covers is arranged on the fly, in a span of about 90 minutes—capturing the talent and spontaneity of a group of musicians at the top of their game. We here at Switched on Pop were struck by the band's ability to infuse familiar songs with syncopation and backbeat, and rack up millions of views in the process, so we reached out to Scary Pockets's leaders—guitarist Ryan Lerman and keyboardist Jack Conte—to arrange for Nate and Reanna to be flies on the wall during their creative process. After documenting the behind-the-scenes dialogue that led to a slow-burning interpretation of the Bee Gees's 1977 classic "Staying Alive," we called up Ryan, Jack, and the song's lead vocalist, Lizzy McAlpine, to hear their insights on making a song that everyone knows sound fresh and unfamiliar  Songs Discussed Bee Gees - Staying Alive (Scary Pockets Cover) Paul McCartney and Wings - Arrow Through Me (Scary Pockets Cover) Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammer Coldplay - Fix You (Scary Pockets Cover) Parcels - Tieduprightnow Bill Withers - Just the Two of Us (Scary Pockets Cover) Justin Bieber - Peaches (Lizzy McAlpine Cover) More on Scary Pockets Watch the video of Scary Pockets and Lizzy McAlpine covering "Staying Alive" See them LIVE with David Ryan Harris & John Scofield, November 16 at Echoplex in Los Angeles! Tickets Subscribe to their YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/scarypockets Merch Store: https://www.scarypocketsfunk.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/scarypockets Listen on Spotify: Scary Pockets Instagram: @scarypockets  Musician Credits: Vocals: Lizzy McAlpine BGVs: Sophia James, Arielle Kasnetz Guitar: Ryan Lerman, Will Graefe Wurlitzer & Synth: Jack Conte Bass: Travis Carlton Drums: RJ Kelly Audio: Engineered & mixed by Caleb Parker Learn more about your ad choices. From the moment an audience hears Johnny Manuel's voice, they're drawn into his world. The Michigan-born, Sydney-based pop act, who has captivated audiences around the world with his show-stopping voice, enters a new era with the release of “Lost In The Music”. As a child, Manuel couldn't be pulled away from the radio, and soon discovered the joy of performance - and his incredible musicianship - in the church choir. He has been a prolific performer ever since, appearing on The Voice AU, America's Got Talent and Eurovision, all the while honing his skills and building an international fan base. Now defining his own artistic vision, Johnny is writing and recording music that is true to his lifelong commitment to his craft. Alongside producer Michael Fatkin and writer David Ryan Harris, Manuel's new sound captures his personality and broadcasts it as slick, upbeat pop. “Lost In The Music” embodies the highs and lows of lovers in turmoil. While the song was originally inspired by a romantic relationship, Johnny began to discover meaningful parallels with his career in, and relationship with, music. Rather than getting caught up in the industry and letting his passion fade, Manuel is diving deeper into the art, renewing his love for making music and becoming a uniquely authentic figure in pop. The result is a fresh, bass-forward earworm, with Johnny's stellar voice its beating heart. This dancefloor-ready anthem, “Lost In the Music”, displays Johnny Manuel in his element - making the music that he loves, on his own terms. Listen to his new song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GZ6BZZz3OA Connect with Johnny Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnnymanuel/Twitter - https://twitter.com/johnnymanuelFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/JohnnyManuelOfficialFollow The Story Box on Social MediaINSTAGRAM ► - https://www.instagram.com/thestoryboxpodcast/ TWITTER ► - https://twitter.com/jay_fantom FACEBOOK ► - https://www.facebook.com/thestoryboxpodcast WEBSITE ► - https://thestoryboxpodcast.com/SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE! Apple Podcast ► - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-story-box/id1486295252 Spotify ► - https://open.spotify.com/show/7h8Qv3r2ZV29f7ktJOwmgM?si=FXxYC1JFSHesBv7_d1WtNQ WATCH HERE:YouTube ► - https://www.youtube.com/c/TheStoryBox If you enjoyed this episode please subscribe to YouTube & Apple Podcasts, and leave a 5-star positive rating and review over on Apple Podcasts. EPISODE 19 - Surround yourself with good people. It’s been a reoccurring theme on the podcast lately and for good reason. It comes up again this week, but we also discuss something else—courage. Melissa Polinar knew music was always where she wanted to be, but that doesn’t mean it came easy—she is as brave as she is talented. We talk about how Tumblr led her to work with David Ryan Harris, doing what it takes to figure out the ins and outs of the music business, and how growing up in Texas helped shape her into the incredible singer / songwriter and independent artist she is today. Also I get called out for being socially MIA and we finally address the "Red Car Incident".
