Hosted on Acast. David Dunne describes a perennial problem for practitioners in elite sports.“There's a fundamental mismatch between what practitioners can deliver and what athletes actually want and desire,” he told Joe Lemire and John Portch on the People Behind the Tech podcast.“So we pivoted towards the COM-B model.”During this episode we spoke at length about Hexis' continued growth following a successful seed round, technology's ability to influence the evolution of the practitioner, and the fundamental union of academic rigour and those so-called softer skills.COM-B was a major part of that conversation. It has been integral to Hexis' growth. The company used it in tandem with elements of design thinking which, as Dunne explains, stems from his time working for teams including Harlequins and Ryder Cup Team Europe. The model is a framework for understanding and changing behaviour. It was developed by Susan Michie, Maartje van Stralen and Robert West in 2011. The model posits that behaviour (B) is a result of an interaction between three components:Capability (C): this refers to an individual's psychological and physical capacity to engage in the activity. It includes having the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.Opportunity (O): this encompasses all the factors outside the individual that make the behaviour possible, including social and physical environmental factors.Motivation (M): this includes the brain processes that direct behaviour, such as habits, emotional responses, decision-making and analytical thinking.Listen to the full conversation.Joe Lemire LinkedIn | XJohn Portch LinkedIn | XListen above and subscribe today on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.

Last month Eenzy caught up with Atlanta-based chaotic hardcore luminaries Apostle for a heartfelt hobnob after a show. The band gets into how they adapted to losing a member and becoming a trio, how they support each other creatively and emotionally in the band, and they land some solid burns at the expense of jazz and black metal (genres famous for their sense of humor). They're currently supporting their latest release Liminal. Listen to the interview down at the bottom or on our Spoofy channel and read the edited transcription below. [Fan crashes interview to tell the band how great the show was] Eenz: Hey guys, Eenzy here outside 529 once again, this time with Apostle. You guys wanna introduce yourselves? Michael: Hello my name is Michael and I play bass in the band. Murice: I'm Murice I do guitar and vocals. Evan: I'm Evan - I play drums. Eenz: I just sat through a pretty bitchin' show with you guys, Malevich which is another local blackened grind band, Hexis - a great band from Denmark, and.. I forget the last band actually. But I have questions about your band so it doesn't matter. My first question is about the name: where did the name Apostle come from? Is there a story behind it? Did you just pick a word out of the dictionary like Health? What's up? Evan: It was kinda something I was sitting on in my early 20's, I was going through my kind of angsty, atheist-phase. To be totally honest I was like 'Yeah, it'd be cool to have a band in a chaotic and abrasive style kind of tongue-in-cheek named Apostle'. Honestly, I just thought it sounded kinda cool at the time, and it stuck. When we started playing with Cam when the band actually formed, I had that name in my back pocket from over the years and was like 'what if we just named it Apostle?' and it just kinda stuck. Eenz: Cool, I like it - the bible's pretty metal in certain parts. Other parts are pretty fucked up, but whatever [editorial note: dude, the metal parts are super fucked up too] Second question: You guys blend a lot of different metal genres. I hear like grindcore, maybe some crust, definitely blackgaze, maybe some mathy parts. How would you describe your style of music and the bands you're influenced by in this project? Murice: I always just like put us in the category of like chaotic hardcore, just cause it's an easy catch-all term. I'm sure all of our influences vary, but mine are stuff like Yaujta, Sumac, Infernal Coil, Iron Lung, Coke Bust, The Chariot. Just names like that - listening to them really pushed me to like try to do something more with the music I'm making. Michael: One of the cool things about this band is that we all have different influences and we listen to a lot of stuff. For me, especially when I started playing bass instead of guitar, a lot of like Glassjaw - the Material Control record especially, and things like Botch and Russian Circles - just Brian Cook's bass tone and how he uses a lot of chords, even like Jawbreaker, how their bass player would use a lot of chords to get a thicker sound. When we went down to a three-piece I just wanted to fill as much sound as possible, so for me it was more of a tonal thing, like this band with just a guitar and bass player were able to bring a thick sound I want to try to bring to this band. Evan: Not to sound cliché, but it really is just like expression. I myself am a huge jazz nerd to a certain extent, I mean Tony Williams is my favorite drummer and probably my biggest source of inspiration. But like Murice was saying, the more extreme forms of punk - grindcore and powerviolence-type bands. You mentioned blackgaze, like yeah the atmosphere is indicative of a little black metal in there, but I'm really just trying to push myself as a drummer and get faster at playing blast beats cleanly just hoping to support the songs and further create an atmosphere for the melting pot of shit we have, the stew we have going. Michael: Just to jump in there,
There are some bands that take pride in playing 100 shows a year. Some 150. And there are bands like Hexis, who usually play somewhere around 200 shows a year. On more or less every continent. With tours that seem to take forever, their last one took them across the Americas, with only a few off-days here and there. We talked to Filip and got to learn a lot about their touring ethos and their general DIY attitude. How difficult it is to let go of control and some help from people outside the band. Who to trust and what these persons have to bring to the table. Enjoy this highly interesting interview!
Rachael Cunningham won the free race entry to IRONMAN New Zealand. We find out more about her. We explore the crucial role of mental fitness in endurance sport and its significance for both performance and recovery. We discuss how athletes handle pre-race anxiety and stress differently and the mental resilience required in elite adventure racing where cognitive stamina and decision-making under duress are as crucial as physical ability. We share insights from an episode of That Triathlon podcast with certified psychologist Stuart Holliday, who specializes in working with endurance athletes. Stuart discusses the o of self-talk and the need for athletes to conduct a robust self-assessment, examining their psychological approach before, during and after races. We introduce Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?" as a resource for understanding and improving mental toughness in the face of adversity. We examine key concepts such as the central governor theory by Tim Noakes, discussing the role of the brain and mind in athletic performance. We also explore the notion that athletes don't encounter their true physical limits due to a maximum tolerance for perception of effort. While some individuals possess an innate ability to push past their perceived limits, for most, this is a skill that can be developed. We touch on cases where athletes perform significantly better on race day compared to their training sessions, suggesting a psychological component that unlocks higher intensity and effort levels. Lastly, we consider the role of psychology in recovery, discussing practices like yoga nidra and meditation, which can aid in activating the parasympathetic nervous system for improved rest and digestion. In this fascinating discussion with David Dunne, CEO of Hexis, we explore the importance of nutrition in sport and the lack of tools available to help practitioners effectively influence behaviour change. David shares his personal experience with a professional athlete who, despite knowing what nutritional changes he needed to make, just wasn't motivated them to make them, and how this sparked his journey of exploring behaviour change and technology through his PhD. We also reflect on the work of nutrition scientist Louise Burke and how her foundational work has been so influential in the field of sports nutrition. We examine ways for coaches to develop interventions to assist athletes in understanding how to change their behaviour around nutrition. Discover how the behaviour change wheel, the combi model, and the theoretical domains framework can help practitioners design, develop, and deliver effective interventions. We discuss the importance of focusing on behaviours rather than outcomes when defining a target behaviour and the role of capability, opportunity, and motivation in behaviour change. We also explore various intervention options such as persuasive and cognitive interventions, and peer modeling to help athletes build confidence in their capabilities. Finally, we discuss strategies to help athletes maintain high performance, manage body composition, and fuel their bodies correctly. Learn about the value of periodizing nutrition and the advantages of a more balanced lifestyle approach. This week's episode is with Dr David Dunne. I mentioned a few weeks ago in the reboot episode that I will continue to speak to scientists, applied practitioners, coaches and athletes and those outside of sport. But I also flagged that I want to speak with entrepreneurs and consultants, people who've created businesses or are consulting for their income. David is one such person. He is a doctoral at Liverpool John Moores in the area of how behaviour influences carbohydrate intake. He has done something quite interesting and I would say inspiring too. He's taken that research and applied AI technology to form a digital application that helps athletes and nutritionists to optimise energy intake (HEXIS). As much as the application, I was fascinated to talk to David about his applied experiences as well as the road into start-ups, investment, product development and ultimately creating value for people. Hi, I'm Steve Ingham Sports and Performance Scientist co-founder at Supporting Champions. I have the privilege of supporting over 1000 athletes of which over 200 have gone on to win World or Olympic medals. For the last 25 years I've been fascinated by, researched and applied innovative ideas to help people succeed and now I want to share those performance strategies with you. I help aspiring and professional Performance Science and Support Staff improve their skills, experience and mindset for working with sports performers through a range of online courses and an exclusive community hub https://www.supportingchampions.co.uk/onlinecourse If you're working in sports performance or business and want to get support to develop your team and systems - take a look at what I offer here - https://www.supportingchampions.co.uk/speaking/ LINKS Links for David and Hexis https://twitter.com/david_m_dunne https://twitter.com/hexis_live https://www.hexis.live/ WE'RE NOW ON TIK TOK! https://www.tiktok.com/@supportingchampions Twitter at https://twitter.com/ingham_steve Supporting Champions on Twitter www.twitter.com/support_champs Supporting Champions on Linkedin, www.linkedin.com/company/supporting-champions And Instagram https://www.instagram.com/steveandinghamhttps://www.instagram.com/supportingchampions/
It almost feels like Halloween in June around here. You can't help but feel that way in the prescence of Micheal Hill, he of Tombs fame. The Season of Mist recording artist had a recent stop with Origin and Abysmal Dawn. We were eager to talk to Mr. Hill as we have more than just good music in common. We discussed the new "Ex Oblivion" EP, finding their home with Seasons and his love of all things horror. Currently, the Rolling Stones rock n roll exhibit "Unzipped" is in town. So in our "News, Views and Tunes" we discuss the artists we'd like to see get the same treatment. Musically, we crank new and used from Tombs, Gwar, Septic Death, Hexis, Fulci, VHS, Sundown, and Denouncement Pyre! Horns Up and Stay Healthy!! This Episode is sponsored by Trve Kvlt Coffee.
