Freelance writer Amy Weinland Daughters mostly wrote about college football until she decided to try her hand at, in her words, “a hilarious time travel novel.” That novel, You Cannot Mess This Up: A True Story That Never Happened, turned out to be a catharsis, giving her a whole new look at her childhood and her family. It's gone on to win the Silver Winner for Humor in the 2019 Foreword INDIES and the Overall Winner for Humor/Comedy in the 2020 Next Generation Indie Award. Amy and I talk about the experience of writing about sports as a woman, what happens when a creative project becomes “real,” the importance of supporting each other's creative dreams, even if they seem a little crazy, and just how she re-constituted Thanksgiving weekend 1978, and her whole family from an adult point of view, in her book. Episode breakdown: 00:00 Introduction 01:22 Always creative, imaginative childhood eventually inspired writing. 09:27 Support networks vital for achieving difficult careers. 10:42 Creative doubt and imposter syndrome affect identity. 18:23 Creating requires empathy; art preferences are subjective. 21:14 Believe in yourself; push to create magic. 27:52 Unexpectedly transformative journey, beyond initial intentions. 36:41 Book evoked nostalgia, laughter, and personal reflection. 38:59 Embraced younger self, now proud and united. 45:44 Memories change with age and perspective. 52:18 Nostalgic, relatable, thought-provoking, humorously realistic moments. 53:12 Misunderstood as sci-fi; divided reader opinions. 59:29 People share personal childhood stories with Amy. Jess and BJ sit down with triathlete Sebastian Radilla, who recently captured the overall win at the now-infamous Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay. This year's race will go down in triathlon history as having some of the most chaotic conditions, which resulted in DNF rates close to 400. Most of these occurred during the swim due to a current that we heard was about 5 knots. The conversion is 1.15 miles per hour x 5—almost 6 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can swim. Sebastian, who swam competitively throughout high school and has continued to work on his swim through triathlon, came out of the water first in his age group and then moved through the field to capture the W on the day. Jess and BJ dive in with this champion to get a first-hand recount of his day and insight into what it takes to be a champion. DreamDev Technologies, a software company from Kildare who have developed a new AI augmented platform helping companies to significantly increase their product's time to market, have been named Overall Winner at this year's National Enterprise Awards last night. DreamDev Technologies, established by Eoin Barry and Douglas Augiar, are the third Kildare winner of the National Enterprise of the Year Award in the last six years following on from Terra NutriTech in 2018 and Pestle & Mortar in 2019. The Awards, which are an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices to celebrate the best small businesses in Ireland, were held at the Round Room in the Mansion House in Dublin in what is their 24th year. Peter Burke, T.D., Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, announced this year's winners in front of representatives from the Local Enterprise Offices, Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities and small businesses from across the country at the event. DreamDev was set up in 2019 with the aim of utilising online tools and software to enable faster digitalisation for companies. Their flagship product, 'the dot-star enterprise' software platform enables software engineering teams to create their own bespoke software programmes which deliver results with significantly reduced resourcing requirements. Announcing the award winners at the Mansion House and after earlier launching the new Local Enterprise Office Policy Statement, Minister Burke said; "The National Enterprise Awards are the highlight of the small business and enterprise calendar. Year on year the diversity of businesses and the standard of companies that are coming through the process is getting stronger. We should not be surprised given the innovation and endurance that businesses have shown in recent years. We have some outstanding winners but the finalists on the whole have been excellent, and this is very much the start of their journey. "The new Local Enterprise Office Policy Statement I announced today sets out the vital role that LEOs have in fostering entrepreneurship and helping small businesses thrive every day across the country. The Policy Statement charts a clear roadmap of how LEOs will align their work with the priorities of the White Paper on Enterprise and ensure that their high-calibre offering continues into the future. I pay tribute to the great work of the current and former staff of the LEOs who, over the last 10 years, have helped and guided small businesses in Ireland which are at the heart of every town, village and community and are vital to our economy." John Magee, Chair of the network of Local Enterprise Offices, said; "The National Enterprise Awards are the standard bearer for the very best of small businesses in Ireland. You can see from previous winners that this is the first step on a bigger journey and it opens many doors for them nationally and internationally. Across the Finalists and winners you see a great diversity of businesses covering a range of sectors. The entrepreneurship eco-system is extremely healthy and these businesses are a testament to that. "These entrepreneurs are inspired to create businesses and employment in their own areas and to establish businesses that can not only compete here but globally. It's a honour to be able to work with these businesses on a day-to-day basis and we look forward to seeing what all the finalists do in the coming years." There were several other category winners announced on the night. Innovation Award The winner of the Innovation Award was Cytidel. The cybersecurity company, supported by Local Enterprise Office Mayo, has created software that helps cybersecurity teams to identify and prioritise the top cyber threats to a company. Best Export Award The winner of the Best Export Award was Eskimo Software. The company, who are supported by Local Enterprise Office Carlow, have created a CRM and lead generation software package specifically for car dealerships to improve efficiency and...

Eddie Weir PCIAT, President of CIAT, says: "I am delighted and looking forward to attending the International Congress on Architectural Technology at ATU Galway in my capacity of CIAT President. The built environment plays a crucial role in how people understand and value the world around them and the essential pivotal discipline of Architectural Technology is at the centre of this. I look forward to meeting those who are transforming the built environment with their forward-thinking initiatives on Architectural Technology. The student event on the first day, Thursday 18 January, will see Ireland's top Architectural Technology students work in groups (teams of six) all day to develop a detailed project and presentation as part of the inaugural national student competition in consultation with CIAT and ONOM for Best Application of Sustainable Materials, Best Demonstration of Buildability of Assembly and Overall Winner. A best paper award will be announced at the end of the conference proceedings. Irene Hayden explains the Congress ethos which is that the research it initiates and disseminates "must be independent of political, economic, and ideological interests as well as dominating influence from organisations, and institutions. It is the firm belief of the Congress board that true development on behalf of society is a result of free debate and presentation of different views and perspectives. International authors this year have researched topics across many areas, demonstrating the next evolution of architectural technology transformation. Presenters and attendees are excited to learn about new uses of technology in conservation architecture, building material passports for the circular economy, enhanced fire evacuation opportunities, augmented reality applications for deconstruction surveys, sustainable material choices, as-built monitoring of design choices to reduce service loads, flooding mitigation using blue-green roofs, as-built moisture monitoring and control of building fabrics, fabric first approach options for deep retrofits, Enerphit, and Passivhaus projects, and the use of artificial i...

How Writing a Letter Changed a Life with Amy W. Daughters and Dana Rivera | EP. 339

My guests this week are Amy Daughters and Dana Rivera. Amy is a native Houstonian and a graduate of The Texas Tech University who has been a freelance writer for more than a decade—mostly covering college football and sometimes talking about her feelings. Amy's debut novel, You Cannot Mess This Up: A True Story That Never Happened (She Writes Press, 2019), was selected as the Silver Winner for Humor in the 2019 Foreword INDIES and the Overall Winner for Humor/Comedy in the 2020 Next Generation Indie Awards. Dana has been teaching 31 years and has 5 children and 6 grandchildren. She enjoys the beach, running, reading, LSU and spending time with her family. She is writing her first book, “This Is Not What I Expected.” You might be wondering, how are these people related? Years ago, Amy wanted to reach out to her old friend Dana and learned that Dana's son had terminal cancer. Their friendship was rekindled after decades, just because of a handwritten letter. 4:47 – Dana 101 She is retired from public school after teaching reading for many years. Dana is a grandmother and PE teacher. She considers it her dream job. 6:55 – Amy 101 She has lived in the Midwest and overseas. She mostly writes about college football, but also writes about her feelings. 10:41 – Dear Dana Amy wrote a book, “Dear Dana: That time I went crazy and wrote all 580 of my Facebook friends a handwritten letter.” More than 30 years ago, Amy and Dana met at a summer camp in Trinity, Texas. They were counselors together for six weeks. They reconnected years later, and Amy found out Dana's son had cancer. Amy started writing her letters. 14:08 – Letters from a friend Dana was shocked that Amy was sending her the nicest cards. Amy wrote letters for several weeks before Dana's son Parker passed away at age 15. 29:23 – Lost art of letter writing Amy decided to write letters to all of her Facebook friends. 32:32 – What can others learn? Try to rekindle the lost art of letter writing. It can be tough to write to someone who is grieving. Often, we don't know what to do or how to respond. 51:01 – Feeling a nudge Connecting with people is so important. When you feel a nudge to do it, go for it. Challenge yourself – send a handwritten note to two people. 55:35 – Get to know you Last time they cried? When they leave each other after a visit. FEATURED QUOTES I mostly write about college football, and I sometimes write about my feelings. – Amy I believe that every letter that left my outgoing mail is a credit back to my connection to Dana and to Parker. – Amy Amy created a safe space for me to say this sucks, what in the world is going on? The outpouring of sharing came because she created a safe space. - Dana https://www.amydaughters.com/ https://www.amazon.com/Dear-Dana-Facebook-friends-handwritten/dp/1647429005

It's the podcast edition of the very first LIVE episode of Emsolation, yes our Sunday Crowdcast of ‘A Very Emsolation Christmas' LIVE has been converted into this magnificent montage of audio delights. Obviously if you weren't there to witness this special one off event, we've got you covered…mostly. Naturally there were a few moments that only worked visually, hence they don't appear, plus Em and her band performed hits from her appearance on ‘The Masked Singer' and a bunch of Christmas tunes as well, but we can't include them either because of copyright issues. So really, if you wanna experience the entire thing, you've still got until this Sunday to buy a ticket and watch it before it disappears forever, link in the bio of the Emsolation Podcast page on Instagram. Inside this special Xmas edition of the podcast you'll hear more behind the scenes goss about Michael's time at the AACTA Awards, plus Em gives Michael the chance to give the speech he would have given, if he'd actually won his nomination for best writing. Then we move through a grab bag of spicy treats, all worthy of pleasuring your ear canals. We start with the glorious news that Pete Davidson has been spending time with Miley Cyrus. It should be no surprise to any of us that both Em and Michael are mad keen for them to hook up for reals, and for Pete to call it quits on continuing to contractually pretend he's dating Kim Kardashian. Then we gotta talk through the return of ‘Sex and the City' with the debut of the new spin off series ‘And Just Like That', which despite Em and Michael's assurances would remain spoiler free, actually ends up becoming a huge spoiler filled rant, with a totes realistic and honest clapback for anyone who still thinks they can live on this planet and avoid all the spoilers, NOT. EVER. GONNA. HAPPEN. We also talk through 50 Cent trying to sex shame Madonna, which eventually opened up a very confronting can of worms for lovers of Nancy Reagan, and quite easily the comment of the podcast from one Michael Lucas, you'll know it when you hear it. Once we've gathered ourselves back into some form of composure, it's onto the Emsolation Awards of 2021, where Em and Michael will go through the nominees and announce the winners of three standout categories for Emsolators. They are ‘Best Conspiracy of 2021', the equally important ‘Best Performance by a Penis in 2021' and finally they'll announce the ‘Overall Winner of 2021'. Lastly, to see ourselves out, Em and Michael get a chance to answer a few tricky questions, as requested from Emsolators as they watched the recording live. So grab your headphones and settle in for the kind of Christmas celebration you'd expect, when your sassy Auntie, and her camp best friend, rock up with a few gins under their belts, and decide not to take any prisoners in their efforts to make sure this family gathering is as chaotic and glorious as we all crave it to be.
