When you are struggling with all of the symptoms of a hormonally imbalanced body (which by the way is a common part of going through perimenopause) one of the first steps I focus on for myself and my clients is to manage blood sugar levels. Choosing nutrition that creates consistent blood sugar in the body will improve sleep, reduce cravings and fatigue, reduce cortisol and give the body the space it needs to metabolize and balance our hormones themselves…keeping all of those terrible symptoms away…not to mention aid our bodies in shifting from fat storage to fat burning…sounds pretty great right?!?   Although managing your blood glucose on your own is possible, I have fallen in love with an amazing tool called a Continuous Glucose Monitor (or CGM) from a company called Nutrisense which you wear on your body and not only gives you immediate feedback on how your specific blood sugar is being affected by your food choices, but also how to improve energy, sleep, fitness and therefore results. On this episode of the pod,  I am fortunate enough to have the amazing Catherine Staffieri, a nutrition and glucose expert and registered dietician with Nutrisense, to chat about the impact of glucose on hormones, perimenopause and menopause, weight loss and the incredible benefits of using a CGM as a tool to help you feel your best.   Catherine is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist currently working as a Nutrition Manager at Nutrisense, one of the fastest growing healthtech start-ups aimed to help anyone discover and reach their health potential. Catherine has counseled thousands of clients on their glucose scores reviewing over 750,000 hours of glucose data and recorded meals in the process, while recommending nutritional adjustments to improve metabolic health. She holds a Masters in Nutrition Education from Columbia University and completed her undergrad work at the University of Pennsylvania. She enjoys cooking, spending time with her 3 kids, traveling and being active. Catherine's philosophy is that you're never too old to make changes in your life to better your mind, your body and your well being.   Tune In To Learn:   How Glucose Impacts your hormones What tracking Glucose Is the First Line Of Defense Against Hormone Imbalance   Learn More About Nutrisense Here:   Insta: @nutrisenseio Insta @cstaffieri_rdn. Nutrisense offers a unique blood glucose monitoring system combined with a fitness-focused app, designed to help individuals optimize their health. The discussion highlights how this approach is different from traditional diabetic-focused use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs). Catherine explains that Nutrisense builds upon existing CGM technology, using Abbott Freestyle Libre sensors, and pairs it with a comprehensive app. This app not only displays glucose data but also factors in nutrition, exercise, stress, and other variables, offering a holistic view of one's health. Nutrisense further distinguishes itself by providing personalized support from dieticians and nutritionists during the initial month of using the product. The conversation revolves around the concept of "N equals 1," where each individual's response to different factors varies. The CGM and app together provide a real-time window into the body, revealing how various lifestyle factors impact glucose levels throughout the day and night. This personalized approach allows users to gain insights into their unique responses to foods, exercise, and other influences. Brad emphasizes the product's potential for low-level biohacking, allowing users to understand how their bodies react to different inputs. He mentions his excitement about experimenting with factors like workout timing and fasting to observe their effects on his glucose levels. Catherine affirms that Nutrisense enables users to uncover unexpected insights, such as how certain foods and activities can influence glucose responses. She believes in a deeply customized approach to discovering what works for each person and encourages creative and sustainable changes that enable long-term success. Enjoy the episode! Questions Answered How to approach glucose monitoring for weight management? The connection between caffeine and glucose levels. What happens to insulin levels of menopausal women? What happens in the body when glucose levels spike up and stay up? A hack to try so you don't have to deny yourself yummy bread from the bread basket when out to dinner.   Action Items Get daily inspiration to help with cravings, energy, hormones, mood, sleep, and diabetes with the Glucose Goddess Check out the Nutrisense free weightloss ebook: Guide to Weight Loss Plateaus Try out a Continuous Glucose Monitor and connect with one of Nutrisense's personal dieticians to create a personalized weight management plan Try out glucose monitoring for weight management with my 3 favorite quick and easy recipes for balancing blood sugar levels.   Key Moments in the Conversation [7:34] A lot of people struggle with all kinds of symptoms for a while like fatigue, afternoon lulls, brain fog, irritability, mood swings, etc. Sometimes we're made to feel like it's in our heads but it's a very biological thing and glucose is one big piece of the puzzle for a lot of people in that way. [11:16] I'm here to put minds at ease because fluctuation in glucose is totally healthy and normal. We are not striving for a flat line. [22:01] As estrogen levels start to decline through that transition, it can shift how we respond to insulin and glucose. It may mean that there are some dietary and lifestyle tweaks that you can do. [25:56]  Instead we have to get out of this over-restrictive mentality and nourish our bodies with the nutrients it needs.

Knowing & monitoring your bloodwork may change the arc of how you take care of yourself Continuous glucose monitors are an excellent way to learn about yourself and address behavior changes – it teaches the patient to be their own physicianTo maximize vitality and longevity: sleep, avoid excessive alcohol, address perceived stress, be mindful of eating well, avoid toxic relationships, move intentionally in ways that work for your bodyRanking most useful supplements for the general population (but remember, start with high-quality food first): fish oil, magnesium, vitamin DExercise tips: balance routine to 1/3 cardio + 2/3 strength training Note, high levels of cardio can increase cortisol levels!Early hormone replacement therapy should be strongly considered! The decline in estrogen which starts around 40-43 seems to be the driver behind cerebral hypometabolism (decline in brain function) “Hot flashes and night sweats are a biomarker of cardiometabolic disease – they are a biomarker of increased bone loss, they are a biomarker of changes in the brain. So many of the symptoms that occur in peri-menopause are not driven by the ovaries, they're driven by the brain.” – Dr. Sara GottfriedRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgMy guest is Sara Gottfried, M.D., a Harvard-trained, board-certified gynecologist and clinical assistant professor of integrative medicine & nutritional sciences at Thomas Jefferson University. If I asked you to make a list of foods that you predict would spike your blood sugar, what would be on your list? Coca-Cola? Twinkies? Frappuccinos? Probably not steak and green beans, right? Well, as it turns out, steak and green beans spike my blood sugar. I wouldn't have predicted that, either, before I started wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). You've likely heard of CGMs, because they're a big trend in the health industry right now, but if you haven't, what they do is pretty self-explanatory. They monitor your glucose...continuously. Paying attention to your blood sugar is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Poor glucose control is most often associated with diabetes, but it also affects a range of chronic conditions, including Alzheimer's, stroke, heart disease, and more. It can also lower your day-to-day energy levels, impede your ability to control your weight, and decrease your sexual function. I wear a CGM from a company called Levels. As a self-proclaimed tech geek, I appreciate that the Levels app goes way beyond most companion apps for CGMs. Until I was a Levels member, I thought I understood my metabolic health pretty well. I definitely didn't expect steak and green beans to be on the watch list. But because your body's glucose response to food is highly individual, there's no way to know until you test. Casey Means, MD, my guest on today's show, is the Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder Levels, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention, and she guest lectures at Stanford University. Casey's mission is to maximize human potential and reverse the epidemic of preventable chronic disease by empowering individuals with tools that can facilitate a deep understanding of our bodies and inform personalized and sustainable dietary and lifestyle choices. Dr. Means's perspective has been recently featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Men's Health, Forbes, Business Insider, Techcrunch, Entrepreneur Magazine, Metabolism.   Episode Sponsors: Levels: If you want to better understand how food affects your health and try a continuous glucose monitor, go to levels.link/Ben to learn more.
