Born in ‘90s Havana, Cuba, Daymé Arocena has been surrounded by music her whole life. The singer, composer and arranger is deeply influenced by the voices of the legendary women in her family. As a Cancer Rising, her music moves fluidly from jazz to latin pop. She defies the exclusion of Black women from the music originated by global Black cultures. Isa Nakazawa sits down with Daymé to discuss her Aquarius sun and moon and how her most recent album Alkemi reflects a season of profound personal transformation including an awakening to her own sensual power and a reclamation of her identity as an Afro-Caribbean woman.

Daymon Patterson, AKA Daym Drops, was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning. Daym talked about his early viral fame on YouTube, recording food reviews in his car during lunch breaks at his other job, to working for Rachel Ray and getting his own show on NetFlix. Today, he's back in charge of his own content, and even did a live review of some Haven Hot Chicken sandwiches. 

This week we bring you an intimate talk with rising Cuban roots-pop singer-songwriter Daymé Arocena. Known for her honey-voiced records that honor Cuba's joyous folk and jazz traditions, her newest Alkemi' takes a sonic leap into the powerful pop and suave R&B music that she admired as a girl - Sade, Whitney Houston and even Beyoncé - while also paying homage to her grandmother's lifelong practice of Santeria.  Born to a musical family in Havana where she shared a two bedroom house with twenty-one extended family members (her mother and grandmother sang locally and dad owned a night club), she was accepted into a prestigious music conservatory at age ten and has been off to the races since, co-founding and the all-female Cuban-Canadian jazz collective Maqueque in 2014, which toured internationally and earned a GRAMMY nomination and releasing four solo albums. Cubaphonia from 2017 is a favorite of this listener.  Like many artists caught in Cuba's long history of repression and poverty - she was forced to leave the island to protect the safety of her husband, a photojournalist whose coworkers had been imprisoned. Canada was their only option at the time due to travel restrictions, but after three years living there, the pandemic pushed her to look for a new home again.  She was advised to contact Grammy-winning producer Eduardo Cabra, better known as Visitante Calle 13, he invited her to come to Puerto Rico to spend a few days in his house - and a new album and a new home base was found. Sometimes you just need that island energy to make you feel whole again. Listen to the deeply spiritual (yet still catchy as hell) “American Boy” - about her finding her happiness and power even without the love of her life being by her side. For someone who grew up as a dark-skinned girl feeling invisible, what's clear is Daymé wants to be seen and understood more than ever before.

Comenzamos con el sonido subterráneo habanero del año 2005 registrado en TheFeelinClub Studios y producido por los chilenos Cristian y Esteban Jara en colaboración con varios músicos cubanos bajo el emblema "ByPass". Lino Díaz en guitarras y teclados, Robertico Vázquez y Nestor del Prado en bajos, y Roberto Martínez en saxo alto, entre otros, apoyados por las bases electrónicas de Ban Jara, equilibraron los tracks del álbum "Sincronía". William Vivanco se fue al Sur incluyendo un tango de su autoría. En tiempo de bolero volvemos al álbum "Sincronía": "El gigante de la melancolía" es un tema original del saxofonista Roberto Martínez. Así lo cantaron Cristian Jara y Haydée Milanés. Regresamos con Haydée. "Como un bolero" es un tema compuesto por mi por aquellos días. Sigo disfrutando mucho la interpretación de quien ya prometía ser una de las grandes voces del feeling cubano. Desde latitudes madrileñas llega la finísima interpretación de Yanicet Lobaina. Así nos presenta su proyecto: "Alma", registrado en 2023 en Cezanne Studios, auténtico oasis artístico y musical a cargo del entrañable amigo Javier Monteverde, excelente ingeniero de sonido y productor. La maravillosa memoria del disco nos acerca el ambiente musical habanero del año 1937. Casi a la par de su aparición en los salones bailables se produjo el debut discográfico de la jazz band "Casino de la Playa", bajo la dirección del violinista Guillermo Portela y el canto principal de Miguelito Valdés. El notable cantante y rumbero de Cayo Hueso destacaba además como compositor. Así lo atestigua este bolero suyo incluído entre las primeras grabaciones de la banda el 17 de junio de 1937. Su título: "Dolor cobarde". Catálogo de la etiqueta norteamericana Víctor. Miguelito Valdés. Interpretó de manera increíble todos los ritmos cubanos, pero brilló especialmente en lo afro. Desde los tiempos del bohemio trasiego en la zona costera de la playa de Marianao, donde cantaba con la recién fundada jazz band, la amistad con el tresero Arsenio Rodríguez ejerció en el cantante una gran influencia. Fruto de esa interacción el "ciego maravilloso" participó en una sesión de estudio junto a Miguelito y la mítica "Casino de la Playa". La inclusión del tres de Arsenio fue, sin proponérselo, un paso más en la "cubanización" del formato orquestal norteamericano. En la despedida Daymé Arocena acompañada de sonoridades más contemporáneas. Sin dudas una de las revelaciones de la música popular cubana, y en especial del jazz, de los últimos tiempos. Daymé, con la grandeza y la humildad del artista de pueblo que no puede evitar resonar con las alegrías y tristezas de su gente, nos recuerda la proeza de otras veteranas intérpretes imponiendo su arte en los escenarios, pese a los persistentes lastres del clasismo y el racismo en la sociedad y las instituciones. El álbum "Cubafonía" continúa siendo un trabajo altamente recomendable.

Positive self talk will do wonders for your mental health and mind set. If you keep the same mind set and insecurities in all your relationships. Then you will notice that same issues come up with everyone. You own mind set and self talk make you attract the same kind of people. Or you can create issues that don't really exist.  After all we are all human. We have eyes. Even though you are a beautiful person. There are plenty of other beautiful people out there. It would be impossible not to notice this. I mean, even your first thought when you see someone beautiful is to admire the beauty. You do it when you watch a movie or music video. "Oh wow look at how hot Jason Mamoa looks" or "Daym look how sexy Jenifer Lopez looks in that dress". It doesn't mean you will run away from your person & jump in someone else's arms. After all they did choose to be with you. They love YOU. For who you are as well as your beauty. You are just appreciating beauty. Imagine not being allowed to do so.  Wouldn't you rather appreciate beauty together.  As apposed to hiding it or having to lie about it. Give these tips a try in your relationship. Ante la pandemia del nuevo coronavirus, la gran apuesta de la industria turística local es el movimiento interno, aunque los operadores del sector están atentos a la posibilidad de que en los próximos meses se habilite el ingreso de visitantes extranjeros.  En todo el mundo, el virus puso en jaque a hoteles, restaurantes y parques de vacaciones. ¿Cómo es la situación en Colonia, en el corredor termal y en Punta del Este? Este jueves se estrena Conversaciones con Turiansky, el último documental de José Pedro Charlo, que combina el retrato biográfico con la crónica sobre el movimiento obrero y la izquierda uruguaya. En el film se retrata al hijo de inmigrantes, el ingeniero apasionado por el misterio de la electricidad, al hombre enamorado, al cinéfilo. Al tiempo que se sitúa al protagonista en su tiempo: las luchas sindicales, el avance del autoritarismo, la cárcel y los desafíos del presente. Y en todo el relato está presente la lucidez, el compromiso, la discreta ternura y aún el humor de Wladimir Turiansky. El documentalista relató en Puntos de vista cómo surgió el vínculo de larga data con Turiansky. “A mí me interesó la cuestión integral. Un hombre de una gran sensibilidad y con una cabeza muy crítica”, resaltó y puntualizó: “producía pensamiento propio pero no como teórico apartado de la cosa cotidiana sino desde una extrema sensibilidad”. Charlo también destacó que contó con el aporte fotográfico de la familia gracias a la compañera de Turiansky. El documental será exhibido en Montevideo en la sala B del Auditorio Nelly Goitiño y Cinemateca.
